WebmastersRe: 1st Time Job As Website Admininistrator : How Can I Succeed On The Job by yawatide(f): 5:14pm On Sep 28, 2011
Just graduating from school with a BSc. in Computer Science is not enough to prove you as an expert.
you're damn right!  If you don't have at least 10 years of experience under your belt, don't even dream of calling yourself a "guru" or "expert". By going to university, you are merely telling people that you have the ability to learn. In the case of computer science, you have basically spent 4 or 5 years learning how to reason logically. I can tell you from experience that I have used maybe 10% of what I actually learned in school, on the job.

To succeed at your job:
Always learn the latest trends/technologies.  This way, you stay on top of things, arm yourself with marketable skills, and remain a valuable asset to your employers.

Also, granted Nigeria is unique in terms of high unemployment, don't feel comfortable at one job.  If you find something better, go for it.  The more diverse environments you work in, the more diverse your skills are, the more you will learn and the more valuable you become.

Good luck!

1) I filled out the registration form and got this error:
Faild sending registration email, please report this to the webmaster (@admin.com) - Also, who the heck is @admin.com?

2) Endeavor to combine front end form validation with back end validation. You will save your users the frustration of waiting for server response and probably help make your site more secure to boot.

3) Remember me for 2 weeks - why 2 weeks? Even if it is, you don't have to tell them

4) I filled out forgot password form and got this error:
Connection to database has faild!
check mysql server/database name/username/password - do I smell security hole?
WebmastersRe: Challenging Nairaland by yawatide(f): 2:33pm On Sep 28, 2011
Sorry OP, but as I have stated on other threads, I don't do blogs or cms. Nothing against them (heck, I have done a few joomla sites). I just don't review them cos they aren't your original code.

Sorry about that.

Backend developers, where are you? No one is communicating.

Backend developers, visit this link:
http://www.acewebdevelopment.net/redesign/documentation/nigeria-website-redesign-draft-documentation-091911.pdf

and get your email addresses. Then get together amongst yourselves and set up no more than 3 teams. We NEED to get the issues laid forth below hammered out before designers can start.

You know who you are.

Then report back to the team, no later than September 29, 2011.

The rubber is about to hit the road. Wireframe feedback phase is over. We need to start thinking of the back end coding. Without this, graphics designers can't start their work.

1) CMS or no CMS?
2) If CMS, it must support all the features we want to have and SEO as well.
3) If no CMS, Framework or no Framework?
4) If Framework, which?
5) What back end language?
6) SEO strategy

I personally would like to go out on a limb and assume that even with updates to the site, it will be handled by technical individuals and so we should not go with a CMS. This will also have the added benefit of allowing us to be as creative as possible, design-wise.

Database or no database? Why I ask:
1) I think we should have a database for the following areas:
a) States (info about states, governors, etc)
b) Ministries, Departments & Parastatals (info on these)
c) LGAs? (might be overkill, but if you say we should have one, I'm down with it)
d) Other things I haven't thought of, yet.

Yep, you 3 have all been added.

So, back end developers (you know yourselves), how come you haven't chimed in on the latest phase? We have been ahead of schedule so far. Don't slow us down now.

WebmastersRe: Beginner In Seo Field by yawatide(f): 11:42am On Sep 27, 2011
It might appear troublesome because it isn't like coding where you learn something and that's pretty much it. SEO is ever changing. See that book I recommended for you? I learned of SEO way back in 2005 and have been doing SEO stuff for clients. Recently, I had a client who in addition to his site, wanted hardcore SEO stuff. He hired a company and after 1 month, ended up dumping them. In particular:

1) The company told him that the way I built the site, it had 80% of what SEO wants in a site
2) They put him at #2 of the SERPs but shortly after ending the contract, the rankings dropped to page 3

When he hired me to continue the SEO, I decided to refresh my memory and bought that book. Boy! Have things changed big time, in addition to the basics. Since I started reading it at the beginning of this month, and applying what I have read each time, the site has steadily risen to where it is on page 1, position 8 of 15, as of today.

So, stay the course and keep learning. You'll get there.

1) Man! Remoranger impress me big time. I was expecting it in 3 days but he did it basically that same very day, including my feedback. If ever I am to establish something in the future and am in need of a wireframer, he is the person I will hire first. This is one of the "side benefits" of this project - us knowing who we are not what we are good at. Hopefully, others see it as such. At the rate at which we are going, we might be able to finish this by no later than October 31st.

2) Yep, I had originally had news and events on that wireframe but after looking at it again, I figured, a "why Nigeria?" of sorts would be better there. Besides, it's not like Nigeria has a lot of official events. Another thing I thinking of is a short video explaining Nigeria on that home page. Still thinking about it though. What do you think?

@databoy
1) Sorry for the inconvenience. I have added your email ady to the master doc. You will be receiving emails beginning with the next round. Meanwhile,

2) Go to the closed group on facebook and request an invitation to join: http://www./172013582877604/

3) Wireframes have been submitted and are pending review. You will see that and other stuff on that FB page.

Thanks

A good book: SEO for dummies, by Bruce Clay and Susan Esparza.  It's 730 pages and worth every page.  I am currently on page 230 smiley

There is also a site I go to a lot. It has a lot of white papers: http://www.andreas.com/

The above 2 sources are regarded as very good in SEO circles.

Weekly Update:
We are about to get our hands dirty on this project. We are currently in the wireframing phase. Deadline for this is September 26, 2011. After that, we will have 1 day to review (amongst the volunteers) before we start talking about coding tactics.

I will be providing a weekly update here, every Sunday, till the project is done.

Thanks

If you see your name on this list, it means you've volunteered but haven't sent me your contact info (at least your email address.  Please send it to omnipotens asap as beginning September 26, 2011, communication will be only via email and/or the closed facebook group.  If you've submitted your info to omni already, now is the time to bug the crap out of him  cool

webguru:
I assume you meant your email address is segebee@yahoo.com?  Please clarify.

Welcome aboard.  I was actually thinking of SMS but then thought that, assuming there are 150m ppl in Nigeria of which say, 100m are adults who own phones, sending SMS to them would be an expensive venture.  All the same, it doesn't hurt to have it on the site.

instinctg:
Thanks. We are slowly getting there. We just need to get all our ducks in a row, as stated in an earlier post.
WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(op): 8:23pm On Sep 22, 2011
Update:

1) Please see attached for updated contact info.  If you have volunteered but don't find your info on there, but have submitted it, I will assume Omni has it and will be sending it to me eventually.

2) Number of volunteers: 38.  Number of those whose contact info I have: 14, or ~37%. Number of people subscribed to our subscribed group: 11, or ~29%.  Communication is key folks

Beginning September 26, I am hoping at least 80% of volunteers will be on the facebook page so we can start communicating from there.  5 pages of NL posts, though appreciated, is getting laborious.  I intend to use this thread to broadcast project progress only, from September 26.

One more thing:
As we start to wade into the "coding bush", it is time for those of you who have volunteered in this aspect to think of your core competencies and where you will fit in best.  We need to get all our ducks in a row before we shoot them.  In other words, we don't want to be in the process of mixing our cake materials, only to find out we forgot to buy eggs.  If you feel you are better off in another area, no worries.  No one will fault you.  Everyone is learning.  Worse case, you can shadow others while working on where you thrive best.

Thanks, and I look forward to your feedback, regarding the page specs.
