@shy-one thanks for the compliments

@all4naija I have been struggling with where to put that FB icon. Maybe I should move it to directly below the church logo, on the left?

@all Please stop diluting this thread. Let it focus on the nigeria.gov.ng redesign project until it is launched. Moderators, wey una dey?
WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(op): 7:03pm On Oct 19, 2011
Granted the oyo site doesn't even come up on page 3 of Google's SERPs, if you are still developing a site, tis best to put it in a "staging" folder on your folder and exclude that folder via the robots.txt file. Then once everything is dandy, you transfer to the root.

An example site I might be working on:
www.christourhopeatl.org vs www.christourhopeatl.org/staging/index.php

Kai! Person don take this site clean mouth well well. Am I the only one who has noticed that though the graphics and layout are good, that the entire site is ONE BIG BLOODY IMAGE?

Wonders shall never end cry
WebmastersRe: Directory Submission by yawatide(f): 4:03pm On Oct 19, 2011
From an SEO perspective, it depends:

1) If your site is about cars but the directory is about fish, you dilute your site's content as the search engine's don't know what your site is about. End result? You lose your ranking

2) If the site is a spam site and you submit there, their link equity transfers to you. In other words, if they are banned, you could suffer from it.

dotobo/web prof:
Send me an email with your full name, email address and role you would like to play: back end coder, tester, seo, security. These are the remaining roles.

frisahost:
I have replied to you in the closed facebook group. Act accordingly

dotobo:
We are fully aware of how the other sites look. This project is, as you have stated, our way of telling those concerned that there are a group of people who not only see what is wrong but who can and will offer a viable solution. If they see and appreciate what we are doing, they will have us work on the others or worse case, tell their people to at least match what we are doing. At the end of the day, regardless of outcome, we will all leave this project knowing that we have learned something from working with peoples we don't even know and who we may never even meet in our lives.

I personally am very pleased with the level of professionalism and dedication of the people I have worked with so far. If there is anyone you know who says our web designers/developers are nothing to write home about, send them my way and I will convince them otherwise.

all:
Closed Facebook group where you register, if you are volunteering for this project: http://www./172013582877604/

A lot of progress has been made. We are finishing up the html for the 3 page templates

dhtml,

If you have the opportunity to work outside the shores of Nigeria, you will note one thing: there is no such thing as over-communication. Communication is key to the success of a large project that involves a large number of people.

The more you know, the better smiley
WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(op): 9:21pm On Oct 17, 2011
I had copied you on the back end guys some time ago so you have their email addresses.

The idea will be the same: I will split you guys up into 3: Home page and the 2 inner pages.

Remember, we are not coding every single page. Just the home page, a landing page (with links to all the other inner pages) and 1 inner page. This is a proof of concept and not a rival. If and when the powers that be want us to go further, then we can use the already established foundation to develop to specs.
WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(op): 11:11am On Oct 17, 2011
UPDATE:
Per the FB page, there are 2 teams of front end coders working on the 3 template pages. They have till october 19th, 2011 to be done. Actually the home page team is going first and after inspection of their code and upon approval of that code, team B will continue with the 2 inner pages. The reasoning is that the home page is unique while the other 2 pages rely on the global features (nav, header, footer, etc) from the home page.

After all code is approved, it will be handed over to the back end guys to continue.

Sorry for the delay in giving this update folks.

26 others were able to register without difficulties so I think your situation is a one-off. Click the link again and look for the button that asks you to join.

pie1ct:
Longest time. How body? Yeah the guidelines you are referring to is what I would call a style guide. My ultimate goal would be that if this is accepted, we can apply the same to other sites, but with different colors/layout of course.

Remaining roles are front end coder, back end coder, seo, testing, security.

Once again, welcome back!

@afam:
Heed dual's advice

@dual:
No yawa. Hopefully you are available to at least test

@frisa:
the remaining positions are: front end coders, back end coders, seo, security, testers. If any of these roles suits your fancy, head on over to http://www./172013582877604/ to get registered. Once you are, announce to the world what your role will be and I will add it to the project document.

WebmastersRe: What Is Pagerank? by yawatide(f): 2:24pm On Oct 13, 2011
Please bear in mind that the PR that you see, like in your toolbar, is merely for entertainment purposes: It is weeks behind the latest PR algorithm.

Also:
1) It is weighted more towards link equity (*relevant* links going in and out of your site and equally, *relevant* links in and out of others sites that are linked to your site).

2) The PR is not to be taken literally as it is much akin to the richter scale where an earthquake of 2.0 intensity is actually (and I stand corrected, though you hopefully get my point) 32 times more powerful than that of intensity 1.

http://www.worldlinkit.net/nigeria/
http://www.worldlinkit.net/nigeria/inner.htm

To the others, your entries and efforts are still appreciated.  You were called upon to serve, and you did.  That's what's important.

Oga Clement, send me the 2 files as PSD so I can prepare it for the front end developers.  Endeavor to do so ASAP, please.

Moderators:
As part of the PR campaign, if you could get this particular thread on the home page of NL, so as to update folks on what is going on, it would be appreciated.

Thanks and once again, everyone join me in congratulating Clement for the winning entry.

Front End Developers and SEOers are the next people up. . .
WebmastersRe: How Can A Website Get Over 1 Billion Page Views In 24 Hours? by yawatide(f): 10:56am On Oct 13, 2011
It came up blank.

Again, I think you should not be overly ambitious.  1B ppl is equivalent to the population each of China and India.

As they say in the corporate world, "Under-promise and over-deliver"

A word is enough for the wise.

The following phases are yet to start work. Maybe you can fit in: Front end developers, back end developers, testers, seo, security.

Send your contact details to omnipotens, who in turn will send them to me.
WebmastersRe: How Can A Website Get Over 1 Billion Page Views In 24 Hours? by yawatide(f): 8:56pm On Oct 12, 2011
I can't say but considering they are with google, probably not. Again, note that I mentioned that google and are affiliated which means it is still part of google's 260 Megawatt hours wink
WebmastersRe: Interesting Message On Website Of Ministry Of Tourism by yawatide(op): 5:31pm On Oct 12, 2011
sly:
Chances are that this is an awoof contract that even the Minister knows nothing about. As long as it worked at least 2 weeks after they paid off the crony who did it, they could care less. If true, sad indeed.

If I had the ear of the powers that be in the govt website space, I would tell them to set up an office of the webmaster who would coordinate all the Nigerian MDA web efforts. This department would come complete with everyone I have recruited (with proper qualifications of course) on the nigeria.gov.ng redesign project. The aim would be to ensure uniformity across the board and issues like security wouldn't be left at the bottom of the barrel.
WebmastersRe: Africa's Top Young Tech Entrepreneur by yawatide(f): 5:25pm On Oct 12, 2011
Unfortunately, he had to travel to Cyprus in order to be in the mindset to do what he needed to do to get on top.

This has always been my crux with our country: Conditions at home won't let us reach our full potential yet once we "cross" and reach that potential, we are the very same people who will jump to say (and I am not referring to the OP), "Nigerian born" or "Nigerian based" student/businessman, etc.
WebmastersRe: How Can A Website Get Over 1 Billion Page Views In 24 Hours? by yawatide(f): 2:03pm On Oct 12, 2011
Let's face it, this isn't realistic: For starters, it is reported that google uses 260 Megawatt-Hours of Electricity. How many do you use?

fastchange, you have failed your NL handle tongue

On a serious note, send your email details to omnipotens and let him know if any of the following remaining roles suit you: front end coder, back end coder, tester, SEO, Security.

Thanks for your willingness to serve. It's for a good cause.

WebmastersRe: Your Thoughts On Pastor Tunde Bakare's Website by yawatide(f): 10:51am On Oct 11, 2011
Bakare's site, IMHO is much beter than TB Joshua's. The only things I have against bakare's:

1) The splash page: get rid of it
2) Contact form doesn't validate
3) I like the simplicity but I think he could have made it a bit more engaging by adding more photos on pages
WebmastersRe: Abia State Government Website Hacked # Defaced by yawatide(f): 5:38pm On Oct 10, 2011
In the Nigerian context, I think it is good so that we stop awarding contracts like this based on cronyism. Also, it will hopefully make the leaders more educated with respect to online ventures.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a co-worker of mine last year. After getting his shared account hacked such that it wiped out, according to him, over 100 websites, he had a friend write a worm such that each time his account was hacked, the worm would deploy and infect the hackers computer. He said after a while, the hacking stopped.

Maybe the above is something fellow web developers should take into account as they look to make their sites more secure.
WebmastersRe: Google And The End. by yawatide(f): 11:54am On Oct 09, 2011
it's called capitalism folks. Dog-eat-dog, shark-fest in action. Get used to it.

I am actually not concerned about google taking over everything. Microsoft tried it and guess what happened - antitrust lawsuits all over the place. Besides, someone will eventually come up. And this is where my concern kicks in: As Africans, we are more on borrow-borrow than come up with anything unique. If google does actually take over particularly in Africa, it would be our fault as we let them in.
WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by yawatide(op): 11:49am On Oct 09, 2011
Aiiite!! Let's get back on track please smiley

Weekly Update:
1) DB Schema being consolidated
2) Deadline for graphical mockup submission: October 10, 2011

On #2:
1) 3 of 5 people have submitted so far
2) The volunteers will vote on it shortly thereafter
3) We will provide a link to the winning design on this thread so that everyone knows where we are.
