you sabi look for trouble o tongue

sixbon:
I have never used your "tool" but based on those that I have used (and I have used many), such "tools" tend to throw in a lot of bloated code, code that seldom meets web standards and code that, if you wrote from scratch, would have looked a lot better. for the most part, I would always go back to delete such code.

To answer your question, yes I have done *a lot* of site without the use of "tools" and many apps as well. I am not advocating the total ban of "tools" but that one have the basic understanding of what goes under the hood. Why? Consider this example:

On at least 3 separate occassions, I have received yahoo chats form individuals who wanted to make corrections to code in dreamweaver. In one case, they didn't have their computer and so had no access to dreamweaver while in another, they usually coded in design view. My answer for the former was to open the file in notepad. for the latter, my answer was to switch to code view. In both cases, the persons in questions balked. The former claimed he didn't want to "mess up the file" while the latter said he didn't understand the code that he saw. I argue here that if either person understood the underlying code, the "tool" would serve as a complement as opposed to a supplement.

I hope I am making sense.

as "smart" as you might think you are, it doesn't end there.  What happens if you get to work and the very tools you are used to don't exist?  What happens if, and this has happened to me, you have a "tool" but it is down and you have a deadline to meet?  Could you, like I had to do, and painstakingly so, know to use notepad?
WebmastersRe: Are Nigerian Webmasters Really Lazy? by yawatide(f): 5:20pm On Nov 24, 2009
in my locale, even having the idea of using a "tool" during an interview is enough for the interviewer to stand up and say, "thanks for coming. we'll be in touch".

I beg to differ. There is demand. The problem, at least as i see it, is that clients have been blinded at the onset by the bad apples. So now, a precedent has been set and clients expect nothing less.

What we need is a re-orientation of sorts. We need not to be code monkeys and order takers but professionals. In other words, if something doesn't make sense, we should stand up and say so, even if it means losing the business.

Believe me, they may not appreciate it then but they will, later
WebmastersRe: Are Nigerian Webmasters Really Lazy? by yawatide(f): 4:56pm On Nov 24, 2009
I have met some, but they are not going to write one line of code (since they have become big ogas) they will only tell you what they have in mind and why it works. How you go about getting it to work is in the hands of the omo-ishes
That is bad.  I am of the opinion that a good leader is first and foremost a good follower.  Being promoted is no excuse to stop writing code.  In fact, that is probably when you should write more code so as to stay current.  What happens if you lose your job tomorrow and the only ones available are coding jobs?  What you don't use you lose.

Again, if that is their attitude, that's bad.  Oga mentality, na im go kill us.

You need to write a book, seriously cool

Also, do we have the job title of web architect, as you have so defined, in Nigeria? If so, it would be nice to meet such people.
WebmastersRe: Nigeria's First Web Conference Hold January 2010: And It Depends On You! by yawatide(f): 3:18pm On Nov 24, 2009
Topic has been made sticky. Hopefully, Seun can move it to the front page of nairaland to get more feedback.

1) Excellent idea though unfortunately I might not be able to attend sad
2) No need copying/cloning google.  Be original.  Just call it what it is - Nigeria Web Conference 2010
3) What does "Nigeria/Lagos" mean? Is it to be held all over the country or just in Lagos?
4) I would suggest that *all* meeting require a physical attendance.
5) Since it is free, I suggest all members agree, during the meeting, to fork out some cash to cater for future meetings.
6) Meetings should be about exchanging ideas, latest technologies, short lessons and may Q and A sessions.
7) Meetings should last (as in, no nigerian time) no more than 2 hours
cool see if you can get a corporate sponsor to alleviate cost of self-taxation.  This should include the media if possible
9) You will need a website

10) As for subject matter:
a) This should not be a chest-thumping affair.  No need to build any apps.  Come up with a purpose.
b) First meeting should just be a "get to know you" meeting.  You then sit down and address #a above
c) Do introductions, ask for topics to be covered at the next meeting.

**NOTE**
The purpose, which should be set on day 1, will go a long way in determining the success or failure of the conference.  Is this a political organization? Is this a union? Is membership restricted? Can "bad" members be kicked out and ostracized nationally?  If the purpose is to set forth standards, how will they be enforced? How will you convince clients to deal with you and not "outsiders"?  How will you deal with "fake" webmasters? Will meetings be held only in Lagos, all over the country, a few select cities, etc?

Once again, excellent idea.  I look forward to updates.  Hopefully I can make it.  If not, I wish you luck all the same.

WebmastersRe: What Is The Easiest Way To Learn Dreamweaver by yawatide(f): 11:28am On Nov 24, 2009
he he, hostmot, your post reminds me of when I would go play table tennis with my paco bat on a paco table back in secondary school. Once you managed to do open eye to get a spot, the person you played with will knock the ball a few times with me before yelling, "chickito, abeg make you leave before you spoil my hand" tongue

With respect to what you said, "spoil hand" would be using dreamweaver grin

Although I will always advocate coding from scratch, I just wanted to answer the question as-is, since one never knows his levels. Maybe he already knows how to code from scratch and like me, just took up dreamweaver recently because he had to. I don't like making assumptions.

WebmastersRe: Quick Javascript Pop Quiz by yawatide(op): 8:55pm On Nov 23, 2009
that was too quick. why did you have to spoil the fun? I was thinking I would have to change the subject header to "site review" before I get a response cool

Anyways, though both your solutions do the trick, #1 is preferred - some say that void(0) is invalid javascript and that if you check your console (FF. I haven't done this but take their word for it), void(s) generates an error as it returns "undefined" and it is possible that what you are clicking isn't undefined.

Let me see if I can come up with something else cool

I could be wrong but I think your table will need a 3rd column - a reference, as a secondary key, to the user table so that the system knows which level each user is.

The way you have it now, the levels are but to whom are they assigned?

Again, I could be wrong but I think that is what you will need for your table wink
WebmastersRe: Are Nigerian Webmasters Really Lazy? by yawatide(f): 3:44pm On Nov 23, 2009
he he, generalized (please don't ask me to define "generalized" tongue) statements that usually emanate from talking before thinking and usually have no facts to back them up.
WebmastersRe: Cant Place Things Where I Want Them To Be On Dreamweaver by yawatide(f): 3:42pm On Nov 23, 2009
1) Get "dirty" by viewing your code in "code mode" and making changes that way OR

2) Visit a site with the nav that you like, view source and css, copy what you need, add it to your site as-is, then in between jobs, tinker with the code to see how it will behave under various (code) conditions.

good luck!

If you read the thread carefully, and apparently you didn't, you will see that my post wasn't referring to you.

I think you should modify your original post to include, "Nigerians generally speaking, in addition to answering a question with a question also like to make blanket statements" wink

WebmastersRe: Are Nigerian Webmasters Really Lazy? by yawatide(f): 11:23am On Nov 23, 2009
ah ha! I knew that at some point the "can I see your works?" question would come out. I could see it coming cool

Granted it seems the original poster isn't practicing what he is preaching, as someone has pointed out, I see this as a thread for self-improvement and not for site reviews. If that is needed, let another thread be created.

And oh, by the way, don't bother asking me to "see your works" because I don't share those publicly. I am not competing with anyone here for website of the year. I am here to teach and be taught, with respect to web development in general. For that, you will have to email me privately, if you so wish wink
WebmastersQuick Javascript Pop Quiz by yawatide(op): 11:14am On Nov 23, 2009
So, I see this a lot on various websites and it is quite annoying. Some Nigerian websites are no exception. Here is the scenario:

A developer wants to have a popup on a page, upon onclick. Popup comes up fine but in FF (not too sure about IE since I rarely use it grin), each time you click, even if the link/image/whatever is at the bottom of the page, the page always scrolls to the top. If you have encountered such and are like me, this can be quite annoying. The page should remain where it is and not scroll to the top.

The code more often than not looks like so:
<a href="#" onclick="somePopUpFunction()">click here</a> (Feel free to copy this code and paste at the bottom of any of your sites then click the link to verify the issue as stated).
Technically, there is nothing wrong with the code above, except of course of the issue of scrolling to the top.

Question?
How would you modify the code above to prevent the page from always scrolling to the top?

As always, I will wait for a few answers before answering, assuming no one has it right by then.

Good luck!

Shhhh. The more you convert your competition, the less of the pie is left for you.  Let the "webmasters" do what they think they know.  In the end, you will be vindicated, if indeed you practice what you preach  cool
WebmastersRe: Object Oriented CSS [Bad Practice Or Not]? by yawatide(f): 1:46am On Nov 22, 2009
Just cos one article says it's bad doesn't mean you should take its word for it. I would do a google for pros and cons and draw my own conclusions.
