Dont loss sight of the fact that these coments are not meant to destroy but constructively criticize the site for its betterment
GBAM! You couldn't have said it any better. Generally speaking, Nigerians see anything said against them negatively, not as something to learn from but an affront on their "do you know who I am" personality.

gdi:

I did say IE6 not IE as a whole. It would be impossible to dump IE as a whole as it is ingrained in our psyche wink

IE7 and IE8 are actually more web starndards/css compliant from my experience and haven't had to lose sleep trying to get something to work. Even when I do, I just use the CSS condiational statement as opposed to !important, etc.

I once saw at the footer of a website "best viewed with firefox, please stop using IE", I and a friend laughed to tears. lets see how IE handles html5, am sure we would have more laughs Smiley
LWKMD! Can I have the url. I will share with others tongue

WebmastersBye Bye Ie6 by yawatide(op): 6:36pm On Oct 30, 2009
So, I had been toying with dumping IE6 at the beginning of 2009 but I was waiting for the perfect excuse - low use among web visitors being paramount. At the time, the %age was above 20%, 20% being my threshold. I also thought of all the cyber cafes that still have IE6 and wanted to serve them as well. I am the long suffering type and so though I bit my lip, I didn't mind spending the extra 2 or so hours testing my code in IE6+ and FF+. That changed after a project I finished 2 months ago.

It was a joomla! project, my first at that. It went well. I did everything right the first time then the client wanted something extra. I made the mistake of assuming that since IE6 displayed it well the first time that it would do so with the new changes. I confidently called the client who then calls me back 5 minutes later. I didn't figure him the type to check beyond IE7 but I was wrong. "Did you check this site in IE6? If not, you might want to". To my disbelief, the entire page was blank shocked shocked

I spent an hour or so trying to tinker with the CSS to no avail. Then I would get it to work in IE6 but not FF and vice-versa. I then decided to go the reverse engineering route - I took down everything and added things back module by module. After about 3 hours total, I got it to work but, to me, that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

From that point on, I decided, no more IE6. I now tell my clients up front that I no longer do that. Don't get me wrong, I love challenges and it was a thing of beauty to hack for it but, at some point you have to weigh time vs cost. Besides, the client isn't paying me for that extra time and chances are, wouldn't if I presented him a resounding argument. Consequently, my life has been much happier since I made that decision, as tough as the decision-making was.

Okay, I am off my soapbox now. Are you all on the same page? It would be nice to hear from you smiley

ProgrammingRe: Pls I Need Help With This Assignment by yawatide(f): 10:56am On Oct 30, 2009
I once asked someone who tried to do something similar with me this questions:

1) On graduation day when you go up to get your diploma, how will you feel knowing that you don't deserve your degree?

2) When you get a perfect score because of the help you will receive and your employers use that perfect score to judge you by offering you the best pay and giving you the hardest assignments at work of all, how will you perform? Will you always ask for help?

These 2 questions, made my friend see the light and today, he is the happier for it. Beware: Nothing is hidden under the sun. Your coding "sins" will surely find you out. Trust me, tis best to do what you can and get 50%, get an understanding for what it is about and a lower CGPA than to have someone help you on it, you get 100% and you have no idea what was done.

Of course, you can have someone help explain the English part and maybe even go further by walking you through the initial steps like a parent would help a baby with their first steps. After that, you should be on your own. I say this cos the way your request is worded, it's like you want help from A to Z. I guess you need to be more specific.

A word is enough for the wise.
WebmastersRe: Css Question Here. by yawatide(f): 10:45am On Oct 30, 2009
You can't - that code isn't cross-browser, with respect to all browsers not being CSS compliant. I have used the very same code on a few sites myself, wondered why it didn't work and did some research on it.

When you say IE though, you have to be specific - it works in IE7+ but not IE8 wink

Toodles cool

Sorry but I have learned to steer clear of what I deem controversial topics. For example, I could decide to start a war here by stating emphatically, based on my experience, that DW sucks, even in code view and that I prefer the closest thing to notepad which is homesite (which is what I have been using for 10+ years and which is the text editor du jour in my locale, again based on my own experience), but I won't tongue

Assuming these email addresses are collected via a form, so the poster should then maintain 2 databases/tables, copying from one to the other? Isn't this double work?

K, I have implemented for someone in before. Off the top of my head, there should be an option to modify html (or insert html or whatever). That is where your analytics code should go.

good luck!
WebmastersRe: Wordpress Vs Joomla,drupal Etc by yawatide(f): 6:21pm On Oct 29, 2009
Does it matter? Why not, based on requirements, see if what you would like to use has the necessary plugins? What if the client insists you use something and you aren't familiar with it?

Don't limit yourself. Learn tid bits from everywhere and learn to use what works best in a particular situation.

good luck!

Jokes aside, I am happy that I now have a better understanding of what you are looking for and that my suggestions have helped.

No, I don't work in a software development firm per se (I mean, let's face it, don't let anyone tell you that as a web developer you aren't developing software cos u r, albeit for the web wink). I work on a corporate website and we use JSP. So rather than wear many hats at the same time, I would rather wear the hat that fits the occasion if you know what I mean.
WebmastersRe: Php Class For Beginners. Question Will Be Treated With High Priority. by yawatide(f): 3:04pm On Oct 29, 2009
Ruddie:

Sooo, I have decided to take a flight and view it from a 30,000-foot perspective and I think (I stand corrected) I have a better understanding of what you are looking for. If you will, please hold my hand while we take a walk along the beach wink

Based on your original question, I assume a situation where I click "browse", search for my image and then the path gets displayed in the appropriate textbox. However, when it comes time for insertion, nothing is stored. If this is the case, then you need to do the following:

1) You need to create, via php (with necessary checking like: does directory exist? If yes, insert image else create it, setting the necessary permissions, etc), the directory where the file will go. Then you need to add the file to that directory.

2) You will then need to do something like so:
$filePath = "directory/file.jpg";
and then insert this path, via mySQL INSERT, along with other values, into the appropriate columns of your table. Then to display the image, you will need to do a SELECT, retrieve/print out the file path and the image should show. Make sense?

So how do you go about doing this? I would google (sorry but I am at work and we don't use PHP so I don't have my code with me) for the necessary scripts. I did a few googles and found some stuff so you shouldn't have any problems.

Let us know how it goes. As always, good luck!

WebmastersRe: How To Create E-mail Subscription List On A Website by yawatide(f): 8:38pm On Oct 28, 2009
hmmm, now I am confused to. Not good cool

You mentioned a website at first, not any configuring with outlook. Outlook can't unsubscribe you at all. At best, you can create rules for redirecting certain emails to certain folders. To actually get your name off of a list involves purging your record from a database, hence my response.

hmmm, i am still confused, then again, it takes very little to get me confused tongue
WebmastersRe: Php Class For Beginners. Question Will Be Treated With High Priority. by yawatide(f): 6:59pm On Oct 28, 2009
1) Have you apportioned enough space for the column?
2) Have you escaped the slashes that are part of the file name?
3) When you view source, what do you see for the path?
4) In your table, what is actually stored, per path?

5) You see how debugging goes? cool

Answer at least 3 of the 5 above and maybe I can help you. Unlike others, I am a little slow so I need more information to be able to (possiblyy) help.

Thanks and good luck!
WebmastersRe: Applying Google Analytics To My Blog by yawatide(f): 6:29pm On Oct 28, 2009
I don't use blogs but I believe you will have to add it to the "html (or whatever it is called) view". In other words, simply pasting in any html in the textarea may not give you the desired effect(s). I could be wrong though.

Any other takers?
WebmastersRe: How To Create E-mail Subscription List On A Website by yawatide(f): 5:42pm On Oct 28, 2009
Here's a quick and dirty way, assuming you hv the emails stored in a database:

1) Your unsubscribe link cd look like so: www.mbeki.com/emails.php?id=(id column of email in database)&unsubscribe=y

2) When the person clicks the link, of course taking care of sanitizing the input (for example, ensure that id is a number, etc), you store the id and unsubscribe values.

3) You then run an update on the email table, setting unsubscribe to Y where id = the id of the user

That should do it. good luck!

novaman,

No one is saying that anything is 100%. Having said that, there are things that should be caught earlier on in the web development process. And by the way, what would you say about those who complain about websites/companies on youtube? "Complaining" on social networks is the most effective way to bring about change wink

WebmastersRe: Review Of Basket Mouth's Website by yawatide(op): 8:11pm On Oct 27, 2009
2 wrongs don't make a right. This is yet another flaw in some of us as Nigerians. Just cos oyibo site is bad, it doesn't mean ours has to be bad as well. Just cos facebook looks the way it is, therefore we have to use it as an excuse to develop "skinny" websites.

This isn't a philosophy and logic class where we have to prove me wrong by contradiction. I never said that basket mouth's site is all bad. I said it is actually nice-looking but could use some improvements.

Again, no need to google the world of websites to "make yawa look bad" or whatever words you choose to use. Step back and evaluate my comments on the merit. The site could use some improvements and I stand by that statement.
WebmastersRe: Review Of Basket Mouth's Website by yawatide(op): 7:36pm On Oct 27, 2009
I think what is happening here is some posters are used to "how we go do?" syndrome and accept things as is. It is like going to a cafe with slow connection and most of the ppl there are patiently sitting for things to download (I have seen this) and when you complain, you are looked at as if you have leprosy.

The site is aesthetically sound. In fact, to me, it has pushed the boundaries. Having said that, it is lacking in many areas of usability:

1) It takes a while to load
2) There is no point having 2 landing pages. Just show me the home page
3) When checking videos for example, I have to "chase" the thumbnails. This shouldn't be. Just show me the videos
4) There is no obvious way to click "back"

I will just stop at these 4. Again, this site is for his fans. If you choose to suffer, fine. I want a site that is straightforward and easy to navigate. Web development is both an art and a science. You don't just do things because you can. we live in a world where ppl need instant gratification. On websites, the name of the game is reducing the number of clicks as much as possible.

There is a popular web dev book, for those in the know. It is called, "Don't make me think". Perhaps some of us on this thread should go get it and read it.
