BusinessRe: Mailafia: Banks Can’t Be Trusted, Will Hoard Dollars by Yazmin: 10:03am On Jul 29, 2021
owagbeba:
This is always what I have thought to be a good solution to this dollar issue.

Let the DMBs sell e-dollars for FCY remittance. and for BTA they can issue a travelers cheque or visa/master card with higher daily withdrawal limit. This way nobody needs cash dollars.

For those wanting dollar to pay school fee in Nigerian school, same e-dollar bought at counter and transferred to the schools dormicilliary account.

Why can’t we just find a simple easy way for those dollar issue. This cbn’s back and forth with BDC is just creating problems for the economy. Dollar is now 525... expect another uptick in the price of goods, and eventually price of service; meanwhile salary for the employed remains the same, creating need for the employed to find a “short-cut” means to make up for the deficiencies in their personal finance. Of course, expect more corruption! More agbero harassing truckers and commercial buses, more cases of police extortion, more bureaucracy at government office, and many more.
Your idea has always been postulated as a way out of the FX quagmire we have had to live with in the entire life of our Nationhood.

In practice however the fact remains that either with the use of e currency (FX) or Travellers' Cheque (or a combination of both), the issuing bank would still need to settle it's forex positions with the honouring institutions (counterparty) and would need the CBN to sell it the scarce FX at a competitive rate ,due to the plethora of needs.

There is a huge and insatiable demand for FX from Nigerians and Nigeria for various reasons, the most prevalent being:

- Our status as a non capital and consumer manufacturing/producing Nation, which puts pressure on importation(and thus FX).

- Our likes for foreign products and services (against available local alternatives)

- Our over dependence on oil as a main source of FX (with dwindling fortunes of this and almost zero FDI's).

- Also, Diaspora remittances are also not adequately deployed and channeled to economic activities.

The underlying issues causing the scarcity in the first place must be addressed, then the channels for effectively making them available can be deployed.

Warm regards.

blazesam:
The Only Christian Monarch In The whole Northeast ‘Mai Tangale’ Dies At 72

Mai Tangale, Buba Maisharu, is dead
Brief history and cause of death.

The 15th Mai Tangale, a First Class traditional ruler in Gombe state, Dr Abdu Buba Mausharu, is dead.

Reports monitored in the social media have it that the traditional ruler died in the early hours of Monday in his Palace in Billiri after a brief illness.

Dr Abdu Buba Maisharu was an administrator and traditional ruler, he was born on May 15, 1948, in Poshiya, Billiri LGA of Gombe state.

He attended, Billiri Primary School, 1962-68; Commercial Institute, 1971; Kaduna Polytechnic, 1974-78, he was Clerical asst while in Government of the then North-Eastern State, Maiduguri between 1971-74; Catering asst in Training, Yankari Games Reserve, Bauchi, 1975-76; ag. Hotel Manager Grad II, Bauchi State Wild Life and Hotel Boards.

In the private sector he was with Ashaka Cement PIc, Gombe State between 1979-2001 serving in various capacities including Depot Mgr, Area Office Kaduna; Dispatch Controller, Factory Depot Sale Controller; Depot mgr. Zaria, Dutse, Azare, Yola; Transparent Planner, Head Office.

Sir nobody can be compared to all you have done in your regime as the Mai Tangale and as the only first class chief to be a Christian in the whole northeast of Nigeria, your time on earth will be remembered for ages. Last time I saw you was when you were caped as the patron boys brigades of Nigeria in your town and in your palace at Biliri. Rest in peace Sir. Peace maker.

He is very right.
It’s easier for Dogara to become even the President than becoming the governor of Bauchi state.

Dogara, is a Christian from a minority tribe and religion in his state where religious sentiments (even within the overwhelming Muslim population amongst denominations) is rife.

His election as a NASS member showed how polarized even his constituency, which is the only slightly majority Christian one out of about 10 federal constituencies in his state is.

It’s a dream worth pursuing though, but just think of having an Ijaw Governor in Ondo state....

This is very wrong.

Yes, its to fight NPL, but all loans should be collateralized at the same amount borrowed.
Hence, when there's a default, the collateral can be foreclosed. This is why we have legal mortgage
Dear sir/ma,

1. Loans are collateralized not only on the amount borrowed, but inclusive of a factor of interest to be paid over time and at a consideration where a forced sale on the collateral obtained can adequately ensure the lender recovers the full amount lent plus a reasonable margin for time value.

2. Not all loans are backed by Legal Mortgage. Several other forms are available with varying level of foreclosure preference.
- BG’s
- PG’s
- CG’s
- Deposit placements (within or outside the lending bank)

And a lot more....

Kudos to the CBN!
If you want to borrow, the be ready to pay as an when due. Let the Banks co-operate on this and ensure we operate a banking system as is obtainable in more sane environments which we crave to live in.

InvestmentRe: Leave My N10m In My Savings Account Or Invest It In Treasury Bill? by Yazmin: 2:59pm On Mar 09, 2019
ChineduObinna:
The form you fill from CBN for a bid , cannot, accept <₦50m.
But you can invest less than ₦50m in TB by using banks that have pools(all banks have one) the down side is that if say CBN offers 16% at the end of the tenure, the pool may get 10% from their bank, or broker
.

To some extent, you are right. However, What you have stated is what occurs between the banks and the regulator (CBN) , which is another ball game altogether.

The OP asked of either leaving it in his savings account or investing in Tbills. which shows he is an individual , not a bank and thus, my response was tailored in similar direction.

Again, for clarity, individual bank account holders can request for personalised rates and hence , the CBN minimum threshold of N50million naira for such type of request. The interest rate would be that as given by CBN directly with no 'DMB' rate pool effect.

Shallom.
InvestmentRe: Leave My N10m In My Savings Account Or Invest It In Treasury Bill? by Yazmin: 7:46am On Mar 09, 2019
Hello,

There is no doubting the fact that T Bills are be eternal investment securities with higher returns than most other money market instruments available in the Nigerian Financial system.

However, your calculations and assumptions are quite innacurate and may not potray the exact analysis for practical purposes.

As a guide, T Bills can be done from as low as N500,000 & not N50mm as quoted by a commenter. However certain investment buckets in the T bills market have a minimum of such (where you wish to determine or bid your own rate as aginst that to be set by the CBN during sales).

For savings accounts, interest is compounded monthly and not in simple interest format. You invest N10mm principal, in month one. By month 2 your Total amount becomes N10mm plus N30k interest.
Therefore when calculating the interest for month 2, you no longer use N10mm but N10,030,000 as principal and incrementally so on till month 12.

You should be receiving some few thousand above your straight line calculation of N30k monthly time 12 months.

Also , T bills rate are guided by the MPR (Monetary Policy rate , which Is at 14% today). The are always lower than this rate, once they are issued by the CBN. T Bills are priced based on Tenors rather than amounts. So the interest rate for a 91 days differs from that of a 182 and 364 days (The lower the tenors, the lower the rates).

Also, unlike T Bills, Savings deposits could be negotiated (on a fixed term) & these rate could sometimes rival T bills in some banks, depending on the liquidity appetite for such banks at the time of your proposed investment.

T Bills have an advantage of having no WHT (Witholding Tax) payments, so you get your full interest, tax free, except for some few fees of less than N1,000 charged for transfer and monitoring.

In all, I'd go for a T Bill for higher returns, longer tem investment purpose and funds security. But a fixed deposit for shorter periods and if the funds needs to show on my account statements for related purposes.

Pradon my spelling/grammatical error. was typing in a rush in order to catch a space on the queue to go and vote Ganduje (Gandollars)in Kano this morning.
