I took an assembly programming course a while ago and the teacher began the lecture with: "No one really need to know this stuff, and you will never use it, but its required by this program so we've got to struggle through the next several weeks studying the material.

My opinion

To write great code requires one to write efficient code. Writing efficient code requires good algorithm choices and a good implementation of those algorithms. Learning/knowing assembly language, will help a programmer understand how the underlying hardware works thereby forcing em to think in assembly language (For example, data representation, memory organization, elements of computer architecture, how input/output operates, etc, ). This knowledge will make the programmer aware of the problems with certain inefficient sequences so they can avoid them in their high-level code.

Not really. I don't have that kind of time on my hands. Got to pay bills you know. I have been messing around with it since 2003, trying to design a thatched building as seen in some villages in Nigeria. Kind of local family meeting gathering with background of real ancient scenerio. I really don't have a picture of one and my memory is falling me.

The Internet Raytracing competition for still image is every two months; for animations, every three months.

Have any of you graphics nuts (no pon intended) used Persistence of Vision Raytracer (POV Ray)?. With POV, you don't need to know how to draw though that will help the final result. You can creat picture-like image with codes. They have competitions for the best image every year. Behold the hall of fame .

No. Infact i will say hell NO!!! Know why? One nut head with access will use it on another ethnic group in Nigeria.

I think its more like the number of downloads per given time period. But even at that, downloading doesn't necessarily mean installing/using it.

Visit distrowatch. They've got links to different flavors/distros. I don't know your type of connection, but normally it will take you give or take an hour to download on a broadband network.

There is no definite reason for kernel panic messages. Its usually generated on a random hardware problem. You can try recompiling the kernel if you can but, just as the previous guy said, get rid of RH 9. Its too old now and i don't think Red Hat supports it anymore unless you have one of their enterprise server license.

I will recommend Ubuntu Linux. Its stable and now the most popular distro out there and the update method is excellent.

Sin no more my foot. Don't be surprise when he force himself into power by rigging the next election with the money he stoled. The purpose of sending a criminal to jail is to punish as well as a deterrent for others. He refused to talk _{wherever that means in nigeria these days}, simply because that has been the strategy of exposed government officials. "Keep your mouth shut". The judge should've sent him to 50 years in jail with hard labour instead of the slap on the wrist he got. Remember, this is an IGP we're talking about here for crying out loud!!! The nigerian judicial system need to start setting examples or all the crap they are saying about eradicating corruption will be a waste of time.

I've been using Secure Shell server, SSH. Mostly because i manage *.nix systems. Like Seun said, Windows XP remote assistance is ok except for the platform dependency and, again i think it only works with the XP series/version.

Philip Emeagwali, just because he said so on his website, has absolutely no input to the development of the Internet as we know it today. If we must make a claim, please make sure you have your facts straight. I must tell you, i used to be one of those who look up to him as a role model. But the fact is, no one can subtantiate his claims. Are we so cheap to make false claims? just so that we can be recognized?

Today has been a really bad day for me. One of my friend's sister lost her eight months baby boy. Since he was born, he had been always sick; had two heart surgery when he was just two months old. And to make the matter worse, the mom's boyfriend bolted once he found out his girlfriend was pregnant. We've been praying for a miracle or for God to just take him to ease his pain. He passed away today as he went for another surgery.

Have you ever prayed for the death of a loved one when you know there is nothing that could be done to save their live and you know they are suffering?

I think i understand your concern. There is this saying from my part of Nigeria: "Our own is our own". I work with *nix on professional level and i've tried most of the flavors out there; both live Cds and installation distribution. Though they have the same kernel, each differs in interface, modules, specific application etc...

Believe it or not, people unconsciously or otherwise process information in their native language. I guess the inclusion of the major Nigerian language is another way to entice people to do their computer works in their mother tongue. It may not be a big issue for those currently living Nigeria, but it is for me.

I can't wait to spook my co-workers on Monday when i boot my systems with ndeewo on the welcome screen.

This is great. I've been wondering when someone will take the intiative to do something like this. Asian countries(South Korea and Japan inclusive) have OSs, even windows in their native languages. It helps in technological developement.  One suggestion though; i think they should try and upload the image/iso file. The bandwidth excuse will not prevent people from downloading and using their product. They should take a leave from the UBUNTU Project. I will try to pass the word around here too.
