ENUGU—A Catholic priest was, yesterday, remanded in prison custody over alleged attack on policemen investigating issues arising from the crisis in his parish in EnuguState.

The priest, who was arraigned alongside three other parishioners, was charged with assault and unlawful attempt to kill one Inspector Cosmos Nzeribe and a team of police officers attached to police headquarters, Enugu.

The Enugu Magistrate’s Court, which remanded the priest was, however, besieged by hundreds of his supporters, who wore long faces as the priest was being taken to the prison.

He was said to be having a running battle with the Bishop of Awgu Catholic Diocese.

Presiding Magistrate, E.M. Egumgbe, remanded the suspects in prison custody, saying that they can apply for bail in a high court.

Counsel to the priest, Ray Nnaji, who spoke with newsmen after the court session, said that his client was sent to prison on trumped up charges.

Nnaji said the policemen beat up the priest after stripping him naked and detained him.

He said: “I have been following this matter for some time.

“We know quite well that beating up the police is condemnable, though the priest has said he has no business with beating the police and did not tell anyone to beat the police.”

The Lagos judiciary has commenced electronic filing (e-filing) of all civil and criminal cases meant for its court.

At a stakeholders summit on Judiciary Information System (JIS) Introduction of e-filing and an appraisal of the Lagos High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2012, organised by the state judiciary, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ade Ipaye said the system will no doubt ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
The Attorney General, who was represented by the state’s Solicitor-General Lawal Pedro, said he was looking forward to a time when all civil actions will be dispensed within the shortest possible time.

“Lagos is brazing the trail as an ICT compliance state by introducing e-filing as done in other jurisdiction notwithstanding the issue of power bedevilling the country. The appraisal of the 2012 rules shows that Lagos is ahead because while its rules are being copied by others, the state is moving ahead without waiting for others to catch up with it,” Ipaye said.
Also speaking, chairman of the occasion and a former judge of the Supreme Court George Oguntade congratulated the state judiciary for the development. Earlier, the head judge of the Lagos judiciary, Justice Funmilayo Atilade said the e-filing system being introduced in Lagos was an indication that the state judiciary which has the highest number of IT serving judges in the federation is ahead.

Hundreds of indigenes of Okija have staged a peaceful protest to the Anambra State Government House in Awka over the arrest of the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Barnabas Okeke by the police on Saturday.

One of the chiefs, Mmadueke Mwimnobi during the protest condemned the arrest of Okeke over allegations of harboring criminals at his palace.

Special Adviser to the state governor on Chieftaincy Affairs, Godfrey Muotolu said the state government would intervene in the matter.

Spokesman of the State Police Command Emeka Chukwuemba confirmed the arrest of the traditional.

Lagos — Nollywood actor and TV host, Chidi Mokeme, has been announced again as the host of this year’s edition of Gulder Ultimate Search reality TV show which flagged off yesterday in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.

Mokeme who anchored the reality TV show, in its first and second seasons made a stunning comeback as the anchor man last year after taking over from erstwhile presenter, Bob Manuel Udokwu.

He was announced as the host of the reality TV show, at the selection party of the Gulder Ultimate Search 10 finalists which held inside the New Expo Hall of Eko Hotel and Suites, weekend, in Lagos.


Also at the event, the last 12 finalists that will scavenge the Usaka Forest of Akwa-Ibom State were unveiled.

Speaking at the event, Mokeme disclosed that he was looking forward to a thrilling time in the jungle. He also advised the contestants “to gear up for the rigorous challenges that make up the upcoming adventure, for the jungle is no place for the weak hearted.”

ENUGU — A four-bedroom bungalow, built on the hilly Ologo settlement in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State, collapsed Sunday night, killing a pregnant woman and injuring her husband and another tenant.

The woman, Mrs. Chinasa Chukwuka, and her husband were in their room, when part of the hill behind their house collapsed during a downpour and pulled the house down.


An eyewitness said that the woman died before she could be rescued from the rubble, while her husband, Emeka, was successfully pulled out, but fainted thereafter. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Their neighbours, Mr. Cyril Jaja, who occupy two rooms in the same house with his son, however, sustained a minor injury, but all their belongings were destroyed.

Premonition

The owner of the building, Mr. Joseph Nwoye, from Ishielu in Ebonyi State, who resides in one of the three houses he built in the same area, said that the house collapsed around 10pm Sunday, shortly after he held a meeting with his tenants and told them to relocate to another apartment he secured for them after sensing that the building was in danger.

He said that during a downpour in Enugu last Thursday, a heavy stone rolled from the hill and hit the building, giving an indication that the hill could collapse.

He said: “When I noticed this, I called the tenants in the building, including the Chukwukas, and told them to relocate to another building within the area, which I secured for them but his wife (Chinasa now late) refused.

“She said that they should remain in the building. I insisted that they should move out of the building and called them to a meeting last night to tell them my decision.

“Shortly after I went into my house to pick something at 10a.m., I heard a loud noise like something heavy falling on the ground and I rushed out only to discover that the said building had collapsed.”

One of the residents also said that the deceased pregnant woman was completely buried in the rubble and it took almost an hour to pull her lifeless body out.

Arrest, looting

However, Mr. Nwoye (the landlord), who was arrested by policemen from Ikilike Police Station, yesterday and was being taken away when Vanguard arrived the scene, said amidst sobs that the woman’s death would have been averted if the family had heeded his advice to vacate the house.

Nwoye revealed that he bought the land, which is on the hill separating Enugu from Ngwo, from one Alhaji Sanafric, a native of Enugu Ngwo in 2011 and built three bungalows on it in 2012.

While he resides in one bungalow with his family members, the two other buildings were rented out to tenants, who had spent barely a year before the incident occurred, Sunday.

The landlord said that apart from the property destroyed in the incident, many residents of the area, who rushed to his house to help salvage the remaining property and those in his own apartment turned out to be looters.

According to him, most of his property, including electronic gadgets, were stolen. He added that when his first son discovered the looting, yesterday morning he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

Building on the hill

The three houses stood at the foot of the hill, because part of the hill was levelled before the buildings were erected as done by property owners in the hilly Ologo layout.

Experts said that residents of the area are living in danger as the houses could collapse with more downpours.

Efforts to speak with the state police spokesman on the issue were futile, but the senior police officer, who led the team that arrested the property owner, said he would be interrogated to ascertain if he had necessary government approval to build the houses at such a dangerous location.
