The incident was confirmed to SaharaReporters by Lt.Col. Sagir Musa, who said the weapons were recovered following a gun battle which left some suspected Islamist extremists dead in Daban Masara border town. According to him, “The vehicle was intercepted on Monday at about 9pm local time by a combined team of Secret Security Services, the multi-national Joint Task Force, JTF and other security forces.” Other arms in the consignment included 10 rocket chargers, two AK 47 rifles, and 13 magazines with six rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition, he said. This incident confirms that Nigerian and Chadian troops are now working together at the border. Highbros: I don't understand girls these days o. I've been dating this girl for a year plus now and all has been going well with the relationship. I've been responsible for all her financial needs but the problem is; now she wants to go to the university, not that I have a problem with that but I proposed to her and she said yes but that'll be after her first-degree. that's where the problem is. This girl is 18 and very beautiful. The university is like freedom, anything can happen. Should I sponsor her to school first or?? Please, I need your advice. The decision for the girl to enter university is okay, but the problem you may have is that, what if after you train her and she doesn't want to marry you reason being that she has find someone better and educated than you? There is a probability that is will happen. I have cross my mind that any girl I will train in school if I will, that I MUST first pay her bride price, then followed by Court marriage, then she can go ahead and study. Finally don't pay only the bribe price because when the time comes her people will refund you your money but Court marriage isn't so easy like that. Make a wise decision. |
https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/news-page-images-480-wide/page_images/news/2012/gabriel_akinadewo.jpg Armed robbers dressed in police uniform at about 10 p.m.on Sunday at gunpoint snatched a car from the Editor, Nigerian Compass newspaper, Mr. Gabriel Akinadewo. The editor, who was in his Toyota Avensis car, 2008 model marked Ogun CP 11 AKM, was returning from his office on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when he ran into the road block mounted by the robbers in front of a new generation bank at Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the bandits, Akinadewo said, “I give glory to God Almighty for saving my life. I left church yesterday afternoon for my office in my white garment. I am a member of Cheribum and Seraphim Church. “Immediately I was through with my schedule in the office, I took my leave. On my way home, I drove through the Business Club Road, near Femi Anikulapo’s Shrine and suddenly, four men blocked my way with their car. so I decided to go through Amaraolu Street linking the bank. As I approached the bank, I saw the four men again in police uniform in front of the bank. They flagged me with a torch light that I should stop. I did and greeted them thinking they were policemen. “They asked me, ‘can we see your boot?’ As I got down to open the boot, one of them suddenly whispered to me, ‘we are not policemen. It is better for you not to shout. So, cooperate.’ Another one grabbed my car key and ordered me to sit at the back seat sandwiched by two of them. One drove my car and the last one sat in the front with the driver. “Because of the white garment I wore, one of them asked me if I was a pastor. I said no. The same man saw my identity card and asked if I was a journalist. I said ‘yes’. Their leader reprimanded him saying, ‘keep quiet, why do you ask him questions?’ They took me in my car through Wempco Road to Oba Ogunji Road. “As they were going, one of the robbers called somebody on phone and he said, ‘super, we got two, a SUV and a car. They are okay, they are neat.’ In the SUV, there were four other robbers also dressed in police uniform with the owner of the SUV at the back. The owner was wearing a lace material. “They moved to Mobil, Stadium Road, Railway line in Agege and Abattoir. There, they told me to get down, that I must not make any noise. I quickly called the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko who immediately ordered police in Abattoir and others to organise search parties for the car. I later reported the matter at Pen Cinema Police Division. I finally got home at about 2 a.m. today.” Akinadewo commended Manko for responding swiftly to his distress call. He also thanked policemen who commenced the search for the car as early as they were called on phone by the police boss. Items lost in the car include an unspecified amount of money, ipad 3, London train oyster card, FCMB mastercard, Nigerian Compass identity card, his driver’s licence, newspapers, purse and complimentary cards. https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/news-page-images-480-wide/page_images/news/2012/davidmark_0.jpg Nigeria, with a population of nearly 160 million, is one of Africa’s giants when it comes to the use of social media. Nearly 4.6 million Nigerians are on Facebook. Twitter is the 6th most popular website in Nigeria. So it comes as no surprise that Nigerians were angered when the President of the Nigerian Senate David Mark suggested that social media in the country should be censored. On a Senate Press Corps retreat last week, David Mark said that Nigerians use social media to demean their leaders and that there is no avenue for retraction of criticism. Mark also added that Nigerian reporters should emulate foreign media “who never report negative things about their countries.” It may be recalled that Mark, a former communications minister, stated a few years ago that Nigeria’s poor were not ready for telephones. SaharaReporters created a Storify of responses to David Mark’s comments about censoring social media. Most Nigerians rejected the notion that social media should be censored and that social media platforms are a mechanism for ordinary citizens to assess the performance of their leaders. Interestingly, several posts circulating on Facebook called for an “Occupy David Mark” movement: “ATTENTION: Occupy David Mark. The senate president must be stopped from his moves to restrict the use of social media in Nigeria, as it has been done in militarised countries of the world. He has been quoted as saying the social media is being used to insult leaders. We are not in North Korea, this is a democracy. “Occupy his telephone line and help save our only freedom of expression. Call, text and even flash 080350088**. Please rebroadcast.” No word on if the mobile telephone number broadcast is the Senate President’s actual number. But the message is clear: David Mark, do not try to come between Nigerians and their social media. https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/news-page-images-480-wide/page_images/news/2012/Ikuforiji-360x225.jpg The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to remove the mote in its own eyes by prevailing on the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, to resign from office. The demand, made today in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, is in direct response to that of the ACN for Dr. Bamanga Tukur, the National Chairman of the PDP whose son is currently being prosecuted for his involvement in the fuel subsidy mess, to resign his office. The PDP wondered why the ACN, which it said has been on record as casting doubts over the Federal Government's commitment to prosecuting those involved in fuel subsidy matters is suddenly enmeshed in a juvenile frenzy, dishing out judgments even before trials are concluded. “The call by ACN for Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to resign is therefore not only an assault on his fundamental rights but also a wild misadventure by a clueless group that is ignorant on the workings of due process,” the statement said. “We wish to remind them that the PDP is not operated on the basis of the opinions of the ACN.” Accusing ACN of “hypocritical, laughable and a desperate” measures, the PDP said it was surprised that ACN chieftains, in their days in the Alliance for Democracy, looked the other way when questions were being raised about the qualifications of former Governor Bola Tinubu. “The ACN has also turned the other way in the case of a N500 million fraud allegation against the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. There has been no call for the Speaker to resign.” It also pointed out that despite the barrage of cases of misconduct in ACN-controlled States, there is no record of any ACN official or chieftain standing trial there. [Full text of the statement]: Press Statement: Our attention has been drawn to outlandish and sheepish pronouncements by Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) calling for the resignation of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the ongoing trial of one of his sons in the petroleum subsidy saga. While we are not surprised at the propensity of the ACN to make political capital out of every passing event in Nigeria, we find this posturing hypocritical, laughable and a desperate measure to smear the image of an individual who stands very tall in his contributions to the development of our country. Our initial disposition is to ignore comments like this. However, in order to set the records straight especially in the minds of those who may be swayed by the ACN's warped logic, we wish to state categorically that the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Dr Bamanga Tukur, CON is not on trial, neither has he been linked to any of the allegations on the current petroleum subsidy trials. We have stated severally that the son of the Chairman currently facing trial is an adult and is fully responsible for all his actions in the eyes of the law. We shall therefore not allow the name and dignity of our revered Chairman to be dragged into an issue he knows nothing about. Secondly, it is interesting that the ACN, which has been on record as casting doubts over the Federal Government's commitment to prosecuting those involved in fuel subsidy matters is suddenly enmeshed in a juvenile frenzy, dishing out judgments even before trials are concluded. What is expected from a responsible opposition like it is done all over the world is to give credit where it is due, and criticize where necessary. The decision by the Goodluck Jonathan administration to bring to trial those who have allegations standing against them is a clear signal that the government has nothing to hide and there are no sacred cows. We thought that the ACN will for once rise above petty partisan considerations and acknowledge this fact. Unfortunately, they have once more missed another opportunity to earn the status of a decent organization. Contrary to insinuations by the opposition, it is on record that the PDP is the only Party in Nigeria that does not unduly interfere in judicial processes involving its members. The same cannot be said of the ACN. For instance, when the educational qualifications of Senator Bola Tinubu, the ACN’s National Leader were questioned, the entire Party machinery, operating under its earlier metamorphosis as Alliance for Democracy(AD) rose up and vilified anyone that called for a mere investigation. Every effort was deployed to frustrate the investigation. The ACN has also turned the other way in the case of a N500 million fraud allegation against the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. There has been no call for the Speaker to resign. Till date, there is no record of any ACN official or chieftain standing trial in any ACN controlled State despite the barrage of cases of misconduct in these states. We wish to state here that nothing can distract the synergy that currently exists between the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party and the Federal Government of Nigeria especially in the determination to reform and recreate the moral fabric of the nation. We are committed to creating a level playing field for all Nigerians in every aspect of our national life. We wish to create a Nigeria where no one will suffer for the perceived wrong doings of another person. We must also uphold the principle of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The call by ACN for Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to resign is therefore not only an assault on his fundamental rights but also a wild misadventure by a clueless group that is ignorant on the workings of due process. We wish to remind them that the PDP is not operated on the basis of the opinions of the ACN. As the Party holding the mandate and trust of the people of Nigeria, we shall continue to show example on all matters of morality and good governance. We shall however not allow the integrity of our leaders to be wantonly violated, neither shall we succumb to blackmail from a very vocal but politically impotent opposition. Chief Olisa Metuh National Publicity Secretary Sources: http://saharareporters.com/news-page/%E2%80%9Cask-lagos-speaker-resign%E2%80%9D-pdp-challenges-acn |

https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/page_images/press_releases/2012/efcc_logo.jpg?1343662525 The trial of persons and organisations indicted in the mindless abuse of the Petroleum Support Fund in the guise of subsidy for imported fuel continued today, July 30, 2012, in Lagos with the arraignment three more suspects - Oluwaseun Ogunbambo, Habila Thrck and Fargo Petroleum and Gas Limited- by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The trio were docked before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja on a 6 counts charge for conspiring to obtain the sum of N976, 653,110.28 (nine hundred and seventy six million, six hundred and fifty three thousand, one hundred and ten naira, twenty eight kobo only) from the federal government of Nigeria by falsely representing that the said sum was accrued subsidy for the importation of 13,627,084 litres of petroleum motor spirit. They were also accused of forgery and use of false document contrary to section 364 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them. Babajide Koku (SAN) counsel to the accused persons informed the court that he had filed a bail application dated 25 of July, 2012 and served on the prosecution. However, he said he needed time to respond to the counter affidavit and requested for a short adjournment. Prosecution counsel, Usani Francis did not oppose the application. Justice Onigbanjo, consequently adjourned proceedings to Wednesday August 1, 2012 for hearing of the bail application while ordering that the accused be remanded in EFCC custody. KANO (AFP) – A gun battle near a mosque in the northern city of Kano and two other shootings left at least eight people dead on Sunday in the latest violence to hit the area, authorities said. It was not clear who was behind the attacks in the city of Kano, the largest in the mainly Muslim north, but they resembled similar incidents in the past blamed on Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The deadliest occurred on Sunday night when gunmen opened fire in an area around a mosque while Muslims were observing Ramadan prayers and where a police team was already deployed to protect worshippers, a senior police official said. Police and the attackers exchanged fire and one of the assailants was killed when his own explosive device went off. Three other gunmen were shot dead by police, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The rest fled, abandoning their car and three motorcycles they came with,” the official said, adding that it was not clear whether police or the mosque was the target of the initial attack. Earlier in the day, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car of a Nigerian air force officer, killing the driver and an aide, while two other people were killed in a nearby neighbourhood, authorities said. “A car of one of our officers came under attack this morning,” Air Commodore Sani Ahmed said. “The officer’s driver and his orderly were traveling out of town, but as they reached an area called Yan-Lemo, two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car, killing the two personnel.” The officer was not in the car at the time, he said. In a similar incident earlier in the day, two gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead two people outside their house in a nearby neighourhood, said police spokesman Rilwanu Dutse. A police source said the victims were from the mainly Christian Igbo ethnic group. Boko Haram has carried out scores of bombings and shootings in their insurgency in the north of Africa’s most populous nation that has left hundreds dead. |

The lethal Ebola virus has left at least 14 people dead in western Uganda this month, according to Health Ministry officials, after local reports of a "strange disease" swept through the region. A total of 20 cases of the virus have been recorded, officials said Saturday. The cases have emerged in Kibaale, a district in midwestern Uganda, where a national task force had been mobilized in an effort to combat the outbreak. Officials from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control are also supporting that effort, ministry officials say. The Ebola virus is considered a highly infectious disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, with symptoms that include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, measles-like rash, red eyes and at times bleeding from body openings. Health officials urged the public to report suspected cases and avoid contact with anyone who has contracted the virus and to disinfect the bedding and clothing of an infected person by using protective gloves and masks. Officials also advised against eating dead animals, especially monkeys, and to avoid public gatherings in the affected district. |

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram operatives shot at an Air force staff car on Zaria Road in Kano early afternoon killing two airmen,- a driver and orderly of a senior airforce officer. An airforce commander in Kano confirmed to SaharaReporters that the two junior ranking airmen died in the attack. Two men riding on motorbike appear beside the airmen close to the flyover and shot severally at the service car. The airmen were on their way to Kaduna to pick up a senior officer. The attack, which took place on Zaria Road in Naibawa area of the metropolis, disrupted traffic and forced motorists heading to Kaduna and Abuja to cancel their trips. The gunmen reportedly fled through a farmland in the area. Sources: http://saharareporters.com/news-page/boko-haram-shoots-airforce-officers-kano |
https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/page_images/press_releases/2012/bamanga_tukur.jpg?1343560904 The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has called on the Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, to step down immediately, following his son's indictment in connection with the fuel subsidy scam, the biggest corruption case in Nigeria's history. In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said Alhaji Tukur's resignation is important so he can relief himself of the huge moral burden placed on him by his continued stay in office, ensure that the trial of suspects in the scam - including his son - go unimpeded and save the country's anti-corruption battle. It however said, just so that no one will misunderstand it, that the party (ACN) subscribes to the Constitutional provision that deems an accused person innocent until proven guilty, hence its intervention is not about the guilt or otherwise of the accused in the case. ''It is important to say here that the fuel subsidy scam trial will be held in two courts: the court of law and the court of public opinion. While Alhaji Bamanga Tukur is not facing any charges in the court of law over the scam, he is definitely a star suspect in the court of public opinion. That is why many Nigerians are already insinuating that nothing will come out of the trial, especially as far as his son is concerned. This is an allusion to the influence bestowed upon him by his high office. ''While we have nothing but absolute confidence in the ability of the judicial process to ensure justice, we believe that anything than can reinforce the impression of thwarted justice in the fuel subsidy scam trial should be removed. Alhaji Bamagar Tukur's continued stay in office is one of such. ''We also believe that since Alhaji Tukur, as the PDP chairman, has a say in who becomes the chair of the boards of the key agencies in the oil sector that are linked to fuel subsidy (e.g. NNPC, PPPRA and PEF), his continued stay in office is inimical to efforts to clean up the tainted sector,'' ACN said. The party described as cheer sophistry the attempt by an aide of the PDP chair to distance him and the party from the scam. ''Is it a coincidence that the 'stars' in the court trial of the subsidy scam include the sons of the past and present Chairmen of the PDP? Will it be wrong to say the sons of Dr. Ahmadu Ali and Alhaji Bamaga Tukur ''benefitted'' from the subsidy largesse because of their father's positions in the ruling party? Is it a coincidence that many of those named as suspects are big donors to the ruling party? The truth is that the PDP and its bigwigs are right at the centre of this scam, and it is too late for the party and the bigwigs to now seek to distance themselves from it,'' it said. ACN said while Alhaji Tukur's aide quoted copiously from the Holy Bible on why the sins of the son should not be visited on the father, he forgot some other important quotes from the same Holy Book: Galatians 6:7 (Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows) and Matthew 7:16 (You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?). The party recalled its consistent warning, while the controversy over fuel subsidy removal raged, that the government should not punish ordinary Nigerians by increasing fuel prices and making them to pay for the inefficiency and corruption in the downstream sector of the country's oil industry. ''The government did not heed this warning, and went ahead - in the most cruel manner - to raise fuel prices. Now, thanks to the determination of Nigerians to shake off the yoke imposed on them by the same government they voted into power, and thanks to the doggedness of the House of Representatives, it has now been revealed that Nigeria's largely poor citizens are being made to subsidize a few fat cats, most of them linked to the PDP! ''While some of these fat cats allegedly collected billions of naira for the fuel they did not import, the ordinary Nigerian is today paying 97 naira per litre because of the corruption in which he/she is not involved! What a cruel irony!!'' ACN said Alhaji Lai Mohammed National Publicity Secretary Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Lagos, Nigeria Sources: http://saharareporters.com/press-release/fuel-subsidy-scam-acn-asks-pdp-chair-step-down |

This is awesome, this is what the great Albert Einstein quotes "Use your brain, don't leave it idle" This is exactly the kind of development we need in our society rather than begging even though some of those beggers on the roads has everything that made up a human. Meanwhile there are some lazy ones out there looking for who to give them this or that who can't use their God gifted hands and legs to do some useful, if a young girl without hands can do this kind of a thing what of us that has hands and legs, lets us just ask ourselves this questions. Take for instance if those begger out there can make use of what they have for their own benefit and for the benefit of the country Nigeria would have been a better place by now. God is wonderful, He never sleep. |
Good job, but those that earn a living through there will be in a great mess, hope they shall be compensated or made provision for another place. |
