The Legal Representative of Imam Ahmad Bn Hambal Islamiyya School, which was recently raided by the police, Barrister Mohammed Sani Katu of Mamman Nasir and Co, on Saturday, explained why some of the children were chained. The Barrister, while addressing newsmen in Kaduna, explained that those children chained were on drugs and always wanted to escape from the facility. He added that they were only chained to stabilised them. Katu also said that the school had a medical team that often visit the inmates to check on them. He described the sexual allegations against the school as false. According to him, some of the children of the school were from home of prominent and influential Nigerians. He argued that the school was registered with Bureau for religious affairs as expected of every Islamic school in the state. He however, assured that the school management will not interfere with the police investigation. “If at all the allegations were true, why should parents and very influential politicians bring their wards in same school? I don’t want to mention names but a governor took his child there, local government chairmen, and other influential politicians also have their children there. “There are few people out there saying nasty things but these are mere allegations. We will allow the police to continue with their investigation and we awaits their findings because we know nobody is above the law and we cannot interfere,” he said. Governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) under the aegis of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) yesterday said an alleged crack in the presidency over Vice President Yemi Osinbajo “only exists in the realm of gossips”. The Co-Chairman of PGF Media and Communication Steering Committee and Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said Osinbajo had continued to discharge his official duties despite the ongoing controversy. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Babafemi Hamzat, spoke at the inauguration of the committee yesterday in Abuja. The chairman of the committee and Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, at the meeting which was attended by APC National Publicity Secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, as member. “There is no crack. It is in the realm of gossips. By the time they said that, the vice president went to Zimbabwe to represent this country. It was the prerogative of the president but he nominated him. “Like I said earlier, it is in the realm of gossips because only on Wednesday, the vice president presided over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the highest decision making body in the country. “So, we don’t listen to rumour. We deal with facts and the fact is that they are working together. So, it is all rumour and don’t take it that serious,” said Hamzat. On the role of the committee, the Lagos State deputy governor said it was constituted to support the governors to achieve the vision of rolling out progressive public/media engagement initiatives in all APC states. He said it was a testimony of the governors’ commitment to issues of citizens’ participation as the necessary credential for the expansion of democratic space. We have more Yoruba people in Brazil than even in Nigeria. We have close to 80 million Yoruba people in Brazil,” the Ooni of Ife, His Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, recently claimed. Oba Ogunwusi made the claim in an interview with Daily Trust on Sunday of September 22, 2019, on the sideline of an exhibition of over 60 Ife artifacts held at the Brazilian Consulate in Lagos. The monarch, who is the spiritual head of the Yoruba people, said Ife Kingdom had remained in touch with Yoruba people in Brazil to preserve its heritage. He said, “I don’t want them to be a lost tribe; that’s why we have been doing a lot of programmes with them. That’s why we have the Ifa Heritage Mobile Museum set up in Rio de Janeiro in Valongo Wharf. That’s the biggest port through which human beings were moved and transitioned.” The Yoruba in the Diaspora, including those based in Brazil, believe Ile Ife, in South West Nigeria, is their ancestral homeland. The Yoruba make up a huge diaspora population largely due to the slave trade, and lately, the emigration from Nigeria linked to socio-economic issues. The New World Encyclopedia states that during the decline of the Oyo Empire, Yorubaland degenerated into series of civil war in which military captives were sold as slaves. Some of the slaves who were exported as a result of the civil wars were sent to Brazil and some other countries outside Nigeria and Africa, hence Yoruba-speaking people can be found in Togo, Benin Republic, Sierra Leone, Liberia and some other African countries. Verification Due to the sensitivity of ethnicity in Nigeria, the National Population Commission (NPC) did not collect data analysed based on ethnicity in the last census held in 2006 to avoid the political row the outcome would have created. This posed a challenge in determining the population of Yoruba people in Nigeria. Similarly, the Brazilian government has no official data for the population of the Yoruba living in Brazil. To get around this challenge, data published by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for both Nigeria and Brazil were considered a credible alternative to use. The World Factbook published by the CIA provides regularly updated information on the history, people, population demographics, society, government, economy, energy, geography, communication, transportation, military and transnational issues for 267 world entities. The World Factbook puts the population of Yoruba people in Nigeria at 28.28 million, being 13.9 per cent of Nigeria’s population of 203.5 million as at 2018. This translates to about three times the number of Yoruba people living in Brazil going by the claim being checked. CIA’s data show that as at 2018, the total population of Brazil was 208.9 million, out of which, by ethnicity, whites made up 47.7 per cent, mulatto (mixed white and black) constituted 43.1 per cent, blacks accounted for 7.6 per cent, Asians for 1.1 per cent while indigenous people for 0.4 per cent. The World Factbook, which details the demographics of the global population, estimates that the Yoruba constitute about 105 million people in total, majority of them from Nigeria, where the Yoruba make up 21 per cent of the country’s population. However, there is no mention of Yoruba people in the breakdown of the ethnicities in Brazil, and at best, the Yoruba were among the sub-ethnic groups captured under mulatto and black. Further checks from the New World Encyclopedia, which was last updated on September 10, 2019, put the global population of Yoruba at 19.33 million, primarily from Nigeria, Benin and Togo. Data sourced from the University of Florida’s resource on African Studies indicate that there are 25 million Yoruba globally from Nigeria, Benin, Togo and communities in Brazil, Sierra Leone, northern Ghana and Cuba. Despite different numbers of the population of the Yoruba globally, available data show the numbers are far less than the population of 80 million in the claim being investigated. Supposing all Yoruba people all over the world live in Brazil, numbers show they are far less than the population of 80 million. More insights A Brazilian lawyer, Ygor Coelho, wrote that “Yoruba is no longer spoken in Brazil as it is long extinct in the country,” but that it had influenced Brazilian Portuguese (less than Quimbundo and Umbundo – Bantu languages from Angola), and especially the musical lexicon of some regions (particularly Bahia, where Nigeria-Brazil slave trafficking was most prevalent) and the religion/spirituality-related vocabulary of the Afro-Brazilian religion, Candomble (words like axe, ogum, afoxe, xango, Iemanja, olodum, etc.) Coelho further said Yoruba or at least a Yoruba-based dialect was also used as a kind of “fossilised” liturgical language in traditional folksongs related to Candomble religious practices as “People don’t speak or even understand it, but they memorise and sing the lyrics by heart.” An expert who studied Cultural Anthropology and African Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Oloye Aikulola Gbanwoniyi, debunked popular views that Yoruba is spoken in Brazil. Gbanwoniyi said, “There are no Yoruba language speakers of any level of fluency in Brazil except by recent Yoruba immigrants from Nigeria and Benin Republic.” The expert said Yoruba language as a vernacular among enslaved Yoruba people in Brazil during the era of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and their descendants died early in the last century, leaving behind a lexicon/vocabulary of Yoruba words and words of Yoruba origin used in rituals of the Candomble religion. A Brazilian based in Chapeco, Brazil, Gustavo Pedroso, said majority of Brazilians did not know what Yoruba was. Pedroso said, “No Afro-Asiatic/Niger-Congo language is spoken in Brazil, maybe in immigrant communities, but only there. If 1,000 Brazilians know Yoruba, it is too much.” Conclusion The claim that more Yoruba people live in Brazil than in Nigeria is misleading as it is not supported by data-based evidence. At best, evidence suggests that most Yoruba people in the world live in Nigeria. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fact-check-no-evidence-80-million-yoruba-live-in-brazil.html |

A list containing the names and personnel number of the affected staff exclusively obtained by Daily Trust Thursday showed that the affected staff were from different faculties and departments of the institution. When contacted the Director of ABU’s Public Affairs, Dr. Sama’ila Shehu, confirmed the authenticity of the list saying that the “action is a testimony to the fact that ABU doesn’t hesitate in taking disciplinary action against any erring staff or student.” According to the document, the dismissal of the erring staff was approved by the university’s Governing Council during its two separate meetings. Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Adamawa Central) says the people of the state deserve a befitting teaching hospital and a medical college for their educational and critical health needs. She spoke when a special committee of the National Universities Commission led by Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu visited the Moddibo Adamawa University of Technology and the Federal Medical Centre, Yola . The senator, according to a statement yesterday from her media office, said the introduction of a medical college in the university and conversion of the FMC Yola to a teaching hospital would bring a great relief to the people of Adamawa, Taraba and beyond. Speaking when the committee visited the Lamido of Adamawa, Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, she said the visit followed a motion she sponsored on the matter on the floor of the Senate. “Your Royal Highness, this issue started in way back 2011 to 2015 where you people gave me the opportunity to represent Yola North/Yola South and Girei Federal Constituency in the Lower Chamber. I sponsored the same motion. At the lower chamber, the motion was unanimously approved even though it did not see the light of day,” she said. Also in her remarks when the committee visited the management of the MAUTECH, Senator Ahmed said the National Assembly would do all within its powers to support the realization of the project. The chairman of the committee, Ribadu, said the team was in Yola to determine the possibility of setting up a medical college and a teaching hospital in the state. The Lamido of Adamawa, thanked the committee and Senator Ahmed for their concern towards the welfare of the people of Adamawa and the northeast. …as Nigerian delegation heads for UK A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore may be arraigned before the Federal Capital Territory, High Court, over his alleged role in the $9.6bn debt judgment against Nigeria arising from the 20-year Gas Supply Processing Agreement entered into in 2010 with Process and Industrial Developments Ltd. (P&ID).T A source disclosed this to our correspondent yesterday. The former CJN is said to have provided legal consultancy service to the Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) during the case that got it the debt judgement. Meanwhile, the Nigerian delegation has left for the United Kingdom to discuss with its legal team on strategies to deal with the $9.6bn UK judgment against Nigeria A statement yesterday from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, disclosed this. The Federal High Court in Abuja had Thursday ordered the winding up of P&ID and its Nigerian affiliate, P&ID Nigeria Limited, for charges of fraud and tax evasion in respect of the contract leading to the recent controversial judgment of a British court empowering the firm to seize about $9.6bn worth of Nigerian assets. We will commence actual rehabilitation work in January. We will do everything possible between October and December to close out all necessary conditions for us to deliver on that project. “I believe that with the support that we have from the shareholders – government of this country, the entire staff of this company and the contractors, I believe it is doable and we will deliver the project”, the GMD said. Prof. Joseph Orkar ,Deputy Chairman of All Progressives Congress(APC) in Benue State says that President Muhammadu Buhari values the performance and impact of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo since the inception of the present administration in 2015. Orkar ,who was reacting to media reports of possible misunderstandings between the president and his vice told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Makurdi that the media reports were all lies. He said that those peddling lies in the media were idlers who should think of something else to do with their time. Orkar said that the president and indeed the party, deeply appreciated the sterling performance and standard set by Osinbajo as Vice-President. He said that there was no need comparing the Osinbajo with previous occupants of the office as he had performed well. “I know as a fact that Buhari himself is appreciative of the performance of Osinbajo. Osinbajo has been up and doing and that is to the benefit of all Nigerians. I don’t think there is anything wrong between them. “When 2023 elections come, we will be able to see who should contest for the presidency. ”It is too early now and those talking about the relationship between Buhari and Osinbajo on account of who becomes the candidate of APC in 2023 are just idlers.”, he said. Orkar also described the speculations of plans to impeach Osinbajo in the media as misleading, saying that Osinbajo had not committed any crime or infraction to warrant an impeachment process against him. The APC chieftain said that to impeach any elected official in Nigeria, there must be cogent reasons . He said Nigerians needed to grow above primordial sentiments of rotation to be able to improve on its current democracy and leadership quality.(NAN) Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/buhari-appreciates-osinbajos-performance-apc-chieftain.html |
