Chapter 21 We arrived at Randolph Hotel just as the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple. From the moment the car pulled into the driveway, I knew this wasn’t the kind of place I was used to. The entrance alone screamed money—big glass doors, shiny floors, and a uniformed doorman. Classy. I smiled at what I saw. glancing at Richard, who, as usual, wore his usual smug expression. Not a single word to me throughout the drive. A peaceful ride I must say. The driver parked, and before I could step out, Richard was already slamming his door shut. "Hurry up, Ruby. Don’t waste my time,” he called over his shoulder without even looking back. Oh, excuse me, Your Royal Highness, I thought sarcastically, rolling my eyes. Dragging my small suitcase out of the car, I followed him inside while taking a mental note of my surroundings. As soon as we stepped into the lobby, I had to pause for a second. It was stunning. The marble floors gleamed, chandeliers sparkled above, and the faint scent of vanilla filled the air. Behind the reception desk, a smiling woman greeted us. “Good evening, sir. Welcome to Randolph Hotel. How may I assist you?” Richard didn’t even give her a proper reply, just handed over his card and muttered something about a reservation. Why does he feel like a mini god?. “Excuse me, madam,” the receptionist said, looking at me. “Would you like a drink while we process your check-in?” “Uh… no, thank you,” I replied politely. Richard turned to glare at me. “Can you stop standing there like a statue? We don’t have all day.” I bit my tongue, resisting the urge to snap back. It’s not like I wanted to be here. If I’d known this job came with a free dose of humiliation, I might have thought twice before accepting it. Moments later, the receptionist handed over two keycards. “Your suite is ready, sir. Enjoy your stay.” Suite? Of course, it had to be a suite. Richard shoved one of the keycards into my hand. “This is yours. Don’t get too comfortable. We’ll be discussing the presentation first thing tomorrow morning.” “Sure,” I muttered under my breath, though he was already walking off toward the elevators. The ride to the suite was silent. The elevator was spacious, but with Richard standing there like some untouchable king, it felt small. Once we reached the room, he opened the door and stepped in without waiting for me. “Yours is the one next door,” he said flatly, tossing his suitcase on the couch. “And don’t wander around unnecessarily. I don’t want to hear about any drama.” “I am not a kid Sir, I understand you are my boss but the way you spoke to me at the reception wasn't right. You don't always have to be outrightly condescending,” I muttered, grabbing my things and leaving before he could say anything else. He makes me sick. Finally alone in my room, I let out a deep sigh and flopped onto the bed. The room was nice, way nicer than anything I could imagine, but I couldn’t even enjoy it. Not with the thought of dealing with Richard for the next three days hanging over my head. I stared at the ceiling, feeling drained already. This trip better be worth it. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ The calibers of people in the conference room were exactly as I had thought; Business men, government officials, investors name it. I even got to see a classmate of mine back in the University days, he's now a big boy. While I got myself comfortable at a seat as I watched them exchange pleasantries. Of course, the rich will always be acquainted with people of the same class, capitalism and class domination will never end. “Ruby…. Come, I want to introduce you to someone” did I hear him right?. Introduce me to someone ni. I mentally scoffed. I'm sure it's to humiliate me. Well, I followed him all the same. He seems to know almost everyone here, interestingly. “He's someone I respect so much and he recently won a Senatorial seat” I've never heard him speak about anyone like this, maybe not to me. He must really like this Senator because he looks all excited like a child who's given a lollipop. “Ah, Senator, who have you been?” I hear Richard say heartily as we approached an elderly man dressed in a white Agbada. I could barely see what he looks like, that's because I intentionally hide behind Richard. “Richy, Richy. I'm good. How have you been, son?” Why does his deep voice sound so familiar?. “I've been good. Sorry I didn't reach out when you won the Senatorial seat. I apologize on behalf of my brother and I”. “Ah, son, no issues. Your beautiful mother did. I'm glad to see you”. “Same here….. Ruby” he called, I made myself more visible. “This is Senator Sunday…..” Just then the image of the person became more visible. I couldn't hear the remaining things he said because I froze on the spot, as my eyes came in direct contact with those sharp brown pairs of eyes I've known for the longest time. I didn't even realize I had mistakenly dropped everything I was holding. Not until, I felt a large hand on mine. Quickly, I pulled my hands away from his “don't you touch me!” I warned fiercely then bent to pick up the fallen items. Laughing heartily “Still as stubborn and fierce as ever. How have you been my dear?” Senator Sunday asked, a look of triumph evident on his face. “I've been very good as you can see” I immediately braced myself. I can't show him any form of intimidation or fear. “I can see…. So, you finally became what?, he asked mockingly. “A secretary?” his loud laugh filled the air. I folded my fist in anger, I could feel my blood boiling. “A secretary…” he repeated and laughed even more. “I thought you could do better. Like me, I'm now a Senator, no longer a chief”. He boasted. Who cares what he is? Rolling my eyes, “Good for you” I was determined not to give him the satisfaction of knowing he's words and actions got to me. He looked down at me in total scrutiny. “Still single? Ouch!....” Placing his hands on his chest, he fumed feeling hurt. “.... My bad, I won't say I'm disappointed though, I expected this anyways” I scoffed, daring him to say more. “Any other thing?, nothing. You have absolutely nothing else to say, you old hag!”. “Ruby!!” I totally forgot about the presence of my boss. Turning to the Senator, “I am so sorry about her behavior, please-” “It's okay son. You have nothing to be sorry about. I think she needs the sorry….”he replied, smiling sweetly at Richard. “I'll take my leave now, you are free to come see me at my hotel so we could talk more”. “Sure I will”. “Take care dear, my regards to your miserable wandering other half” he said as he walked away. Some hefty men on black following him behind. I pressed onto my pen so hard that my fingers became to hurt. That old fool!! “Are you going to keep standing there?” I heard Richard ask. He looks pissed too. 3 Likes |

Chapter 20 Here I am, seated comfortably typing away with nothing much on my mind except the weird calls I get mostly at night. I should make use of the block button right?, yeah, that's what a sane person should do but I can't seem to do that, I don't even know why….. “Ruby….. could you please give this to the HRM for me?” I looked up to see Helene One looking down at me. Getting up slowly, I went to the water dispenser and got myself a glass of water, emptying it into my throat. The oppressive heat in the office got me feeling dehydrated. “Mmmh?” “Give this to Dave” she repeated, rolling her eyes. I should give it to Dave as what?, his assistant or secretary…. I gave her a dry look as I went back to my seat, grabbing the computer mouse, I continued with my work. Still ignoring her presence, I reached for the document on the black mini printer. “Madam I'm talking to you!” She barked, slamming her hand on my desk. “Come, did you smoke weed this morning?” I asked, obviously provoked. “Can't you see I am working?” Laughing hysterically, she clapped her hands while she shook her head dramatically. “Oh….. my bad, I forgot…..” she paused, a smirk on her face. “Oh he dumped you, didn't he?” She laughed again. “Shut the door after you leave”. I was not ready to engage in any conversation, certainly not one that has to do with Dave. “So sorry about that my love, I've been working so hard to get his attention for years now and you think you could walk into this place and capture him in a twinkle of an eye….” She scoffed mockingly. Clicking her tongue, she moved closer to me “You tried though, for a while I would swear he was into you too… not until…” she blinked triumphantly and blew me a kiss, walking out majestically. I stared at her retreating figure unsure of what to think. Yeah, I admit I have a huge crush on him, but never did I make an effort to get him to like me or something or did I?. Before now, I used to think it's just jealousy but now, I think both Helen One and Helen Two are threatened by my presence because I don't understand the animosity towards me. Anyways none of that matters to me now. I understand why I'm here and have decided to stick to it. Infact, ever since that day, I haven't even given off a friendly vibe to anyone here in the company. I just do my job and mind my business. Dave on the other hand does the same. I mean, he no longer comes to say “hi” to me like before even if he does that to everyone. Recently there's a project he's been working on and she is among the four persons he chose to work with him on that project. I've been seeing her clinging to him and being overly sweet and nice, good for her. Why does she have to make it seem like we are competing to get him or something. Well, that's her cup of tea. I redirected my focus back to my work, I'd just pretend none of that happened. Very dramatic people I have around me. In a little while, my almighty boss walked out of his office, dressed in a blue suit and a black shining shoes, a pen in his hands. Even though I knew, I pretended not to have noticed his appearance. “Go get your things, we're living”. “Excuse me Sir?” “Are you okay?, excuse you as what now?. You better respect yourself” he warned. I said nothing, seeing he had nothing more to say, I nodded. “Be fast, my driver will take you home to get your stuff and bring you back here. Don't waste my time”. “I don't understand Sir, where are we going?” “A stakeholders meeting” he replied sharply. I abruptly got up from my seat. “A stakeholders meeting?” I repeated “Are you deaf?” When I didn't reply to that, he turned around and began leaving. I rushed after him. “Why do I need to go home?” He picked up his pace. “We’re leaving for Delta State in an hour.” I froze. Another state? This slowpoke of a boss couldn’t even notify me earlier?! Who does that?" “Sir, you should have informed me before-” “You don't get to question me, miss!!” he cut me off rudely. “Keep those pretty lips of yours shut and quit following me around like a lost puppy. Go home, get your belongings, we'll be staying there for three days. Gosh!” He barked. If looks could kill, I'm sure I'd be dead by now with the way he's glaring dangerously at me. “My driver is waiting outside, go do the needful”. Just that and the door was slammed to my face. God knows, God knows how much I really want to throw a punch at his face right now. Such a pompous, rude, irritating bastard!!. I folded my fingers in a fist, wishing I could give him a hard punch. Just one punch. I don't blame him Sha, I blame that stubborn brother of his who has refused to get me transferred. At the same time I don't blame that brother of his too, I blame brokenness. If I wasn't broke and desperate for a job, I wouldn't have accepted this job in the first place. A job I was given because I have a small ass and small boobs, puff!!, that alone should have turned me off. All the same, I'm grateful, how would I have survived all this while in this hard economy with no help from anywhere?. I don't have a choice, the financial security this job offers is enough to keep me going. ~~~~ I got to the house and quickly changed into my towel. The driver was waiting in the car. Carrying my bucket, I went to the tap to see it was locked. I was surprised because I had checked for the key at its usual spot but couldn't find it so I concluded the tap was unlocked. “Who dey with tap key?” I asked no one in particular. My landlady and Agnes are seated in the varenda, I'm hoping to get a response from them. “Ah, I no know. I never baff since morning where I dey find the key sef” Agnes said. “Landlady you kwanu?” “Come Ribbon, no worry me oh. Na me and una dey use the key?” She asked back, hissing afterwards. Ignoring her, “Mama Ekene, you see the key?” I asked, loud enough for Mama Ekene who was washing at the backyard to hear me. “No oh” Ah ah. Keeping my bucket, I rushed back to check for the key again. “E no dey here now. Who hold key now?”. “Na so I dey find am since morning oh” Mama Ekene said. I thought Agnes was joking when she said she hadn't seen the key. “So how did you get the water you're using to wash?” I was baffled. “Ah, I go that woman way, they sell kai-kai, their compound go fetch oh”. Carrying the big black bowl, she rushed off to dispose of the dirty water in it. “Na only you dey, any other person dey around?” I asked around. “John dey but em-” I didn't wait for her to finish her sentence “Oooooooo!!! Which kin play be this now?..... John! John!” I called as I went to knock on his wooden door. The cluster of John's area is always responsible for the vibrant chaos of the compound. It's always dirty and disorganized. His bathing buckets are kept carelessly, broom sticks loitered all around. Dirty clothes soaked in a washing bowl, I'm sure he has kept it there for four days now. Trust me, I'm not exaggerating. The voices of people moaning stopped me from knocking the second time. “Na wetin I been dey try tell you be that oh. John and who I no know wan kill their self for knacking, since I come outside na em dey start to dey knack. I just dey imagine wetin dey happen for inside there. Ah, John too like bad thing” Mama Ekene said as she beamed with a bright smile. “John?” From the intense moaning, I could tell John and whoever is in there have gotten to Mars already. I just knew that the longer I spend on searching for the key, the more time I'd be wasting, and that'll give Richard another reason to display his lunatic behavior. I just went back into my room, got something else to wear and headed for the other compound. ~~~~ “Come Ribbon, where you dey drag box dey go?”. I wish the landlady would just leave me alone and mind her business. I'm already super upset and this may just add to my anger. “Ribbon no be you I dey talk?!” She half yelled, marching towards me. “Landlady I dey travel” I said, trying as much as I can not to lash out on her. “You dey travel ba, Ribbon you dey travel. No be tomorrow we say we go do the compound prayer?” She asked, voices raised so high that I'm sure the others at the backyard could hear her. “Oh, prayer…… chai I totally forgot” I replied, fuming innocence. I didn't forget, in fact I really wanted to be a part of the prayer, one of the reasons I'm mad at Richard. This impromptu trip would make me miss it. “Person way hear as you been dey run mouth that day go think say you sef get sense”. She said, an unimpressed expression on her face. “Landlady it's not like that. I didn't plan for this tripl” I said, hoping she'd believe me. “Make I hear jor, better pray make you no get accident for road oh, because my spirit dey tell me something…. And that dream I get no be-” “Landlady, it's okay. It's enough. Which one is an accident again now?” I asked, obviously pissed. “I'm here explaining to you something, you're busy saying something else na wa oh”. “If you like vex I nedey look your face, I dun tell you my own helocrip” “It's not a helocrip, it's a hypocrite “ I corrected, slightly amused at her pronunciation of the word. “Ehh, helocrip, hypocrite, as far as you know wetin I dey talk” she said as she walked away, consciously shaking her big ass. I couldn't help but chuckle, this woman has a way of making me angry and amused at the same time. Shaking my head slightly, I continued my journey, hoping Ekene would not see me leave. The boy is gradually becoming attached to me. If he should see me leaving now, he’d begin throwing tantrums and asking to follow me. I can't deal with that right now. I don't blame him though, in fact I'm beginning to grow fond of him. Ever since his birthday, and the fire incident we've been close. He brings his assignments to me whenever I'm back from work and would stay at my place until he falls asleep. His parents don't even mind. It's not like they have time for him in the first place. As I got into the car, my mind was fixed on the trip and what these three days will be like. I shouldn't even think of it as a blissful three days, especially with Dave is involved. Gosh, I have a dreadful feeling about this trip, I stared at my skin which is already covered with goosebumps, it's not going to be an exciting three days, I can feel it in my guts!. 5 Likes |

The loud sound of thunderstorms jerked Uduak up from her uncomfortable sleep, rubbing her eyes, she realized she was still seated on the dirty floor, at the garden. “Was…… was all that a dream?” she muttered shakily, looking all over herself. “All that was a dream?!” She panicked with trembling voice. She couldn't believe that it was just a dream, it felt so real. So she really didn't stab her husband?, she didn't have her hands stained with blood?. How? How possible is that? She swore it was so real and it felt satisfying. Why would taking the life of someone feel so good and satisfying? “Maybe because he deserves it” a tiny voice whispered to her. She stared at her trembling hands, the hands she had used to push the knife further into his body. She thought of how powerful and strong she felt doing that. “That's exactly the way he feels when he tortured you with his words and actions” that tiny voice said again. A drop of water fell on her skin, making her shiver. Goosebumps taking over of every part of her body. She hung on the thought of what to do while her body trembled at the terrifying memory from her dream. Should she make that dream a reality, it won't be a bad idea, would it? After all, he has caused her so much pains and agony. Like one who's been possessed, she abruptly got up from the floor and rushed into the building, racing so fast into her room. This sudden movement got Grace's attention, as she followed suit. “Ma, are you alright?” The baffled girl asked, watching her every move. Uduak opened her mouths to speak, but her trembling lips couldn't let her say a word. She was damn too terrified to speak. Rather than forcing herself, she continued packing her bag. “Ma, are you leaving?” “Ma, what is it?” Fear and anxiety enveloping the troubled maid. What could have happened to make her madam act this way?. No minding what's happening around her, Uduak continued packing up. When she was finally done, she dragged her big box to the door. “I…. I…. cannot be a murderer. Yeah, I'm weak, but….. I… I can never be a murderer…” Did her madam drink again?, Grace wondered. “..... Emeka cannot be the reason I'd go to jail….. no, no, he can't push me to that extent” “What is going on?!” Uduak placed her hands on her cheeks and wiped off the rolling tears. “I won't be a murderer…… I…. I can't go to jail…. No!” Grace stood for minutes, trying to comprehend what is going on. Has her madam develop some mental illness?. First was she sitting in the garden and holding onto the scent leaves like there were roses, then rushing into the house like one who just had an encounter with Lucifer. “Could she be depressed?” She muttered to herself. Maybe, just maybe her madam's depression has lead her insane. Who knows?. “Should I call for-” “Don't you dare!!” She barked. “I'm out of here…… I … I can't be a murderer. Never!” With that, she marched out of the room leaving Grace puzzled. ~~~~ Ruby's POV Every occupant of my highly recommended compound was seated in the varanda. Landlady had called for a meeting, this time, not verbally but with a typewritten letter. We all sat, not knowing the reason for the meeting. “I call all of una today for two important things” she paused and began looking at our faces, one after the other. Inhaling deeply, she continued “ first, na because of Papa and Mama Ekene. All of us here na one big happy family, and I dey see all of una as my children. I no go lie, this rubbish these two mumu Dem dey display for this compound dun tire me. I dun tire…….” I'm tired too, and from the looks on the others faces, I could say they are tired also. “Why people from other compound go dey gather everytime because of these two?. E nedey shame una as everytime Dem dey gossip about both of una?” She asked, directing a disappointing looking at the couple. “If na say una dey fight outsiders sef, I for like am. I for dey ginger una sef, but no. Everyday na you and your husband, wetin be the problem?. Marriage no be do or die, if e no work for una make una separate!!. Wetin?!. I know how much I spend to replace all the wires way burn, and to pay electrician. I ask una for one kobo?...” She asked stretching her head like a zebra. “No landlady” “This na una last warning. All of una dey hear am, I know why I dey calm oh, I know”. Pausing for a while, she adjusted herself on the wooden bench. “Last night, as I dey talk with my heavenly Father, the God of the widows, the only mama and Papa I get. Jehovah Nisi, na em cat cry. I hear that cry three times. And anytime I experience that kin thing tragedy, better tragedy go happen. So we go pray, all of us go fast today. From this morning till 6 for evening. We go pray now, then go our rooms. By 12 we go gather here again pray……” “Landlady you eh, na just cat now” Amaka said, casually crossing her leg. “Kon comot that leg way you cross now make ogun no kee you!” Landlady fired angrily. “Which one be say na just cat, catarrh dey your ear?” "Ah…. Landlady this one no go work oh, person dey wait for me for workshop now” Emeka complained, shaking his head in disagreement. “This thing I dey talk una nedey hear am?, abi I carry water for mouth? Wetin dey worry una sef?” She scolded, picking up the wood by her side, probably to hit someone. “Please calm down Landlady….. please don't be upset” I pleaded, others joined me in pleading with her. “No vex abeg” Mama Ekene said, playfully pulling Landlady's wrapper in an attempt to cheer her up. “There's absolutely nothing wrong with what you said. It's not wrong if we have a family prayer together but Landlady, today is Monday, we all have somewhere to be at. What if we have this prayer on a weekend when everyone will be less busy and present?” I suggested, hoping it suits well with the others. “Ehhh, I like as Ruby talk. Almost all of us dun chop sef. Me since 6:00 I swallow correct fufu with egusi soup, the fasting no go make sense now” John said. “Landlady e no go bad if we do am like that oh. Besides, I no even sure say you know wetin you hear. Na so you do one time like that, say you hear cat cry, while na John phone been dey ring. Anytime you dun dey do that your prayer, you go just dey see anyhow vision “ Amaka said, laughing at the end of her statement. Before we could say a word to her, Landlady had already used the wood to give Amaka two wipes on her arm. “Which rubbish you dey talk?. You see me dey laff here?. Other people dey talk how the prayer go work, you dey talk rubbish?” Hmmm, just when we thought we've progressed, Amaka has succeeded in drawing us backwards. I understand Landlady prayers can be hilarious and baffling at times, but that doesn't give Amaka the right to joke about it, especially when everyone is being serious. “Infact make all of una get out!. Make una dey go. I dun ever hear una pray? Ehh. Make Una comot for my varanda abeg” Yeah, that was how we all left her sight, quarreling amongst ourself. With some supporting Amaka, and the rest like myself, against her. 3 Likes |

Chapter 18 I felt so uneasy all through the thick night and barely got some sleep. My mind was all over the place. First, I thought hard about the incident in the office. What did Dave really mean by “I understand you are the CEO and I respect that. But don't let me flip the script. Don't dare me Richy”. Don't let me flip the script….. This makes me even wonder why Richard, who is the younger son, gets to succeed the father. Could it be that Dave sold his birthright to his brother, just like Cain and Abel?. Nah, I don't think that's the case, else why would he say “don't let me flip the script”. And…… They also talked about Dave staying in Korea. Could it be that Dave lived there, and Richard was over here working with their father and he finally got to inherit the company since he has made contributions to the growth of the company?. Or could it be that, while Dave was over there in Korea, and it was time to take over, he consented to his brother taking over probably because he wasn't interested? thus the statement “don't let me flip the script”. Why am I even bothering about that family, when I have my own life to think of?. I would like to go get my PHD and I need so much money for that. So far I haven't saved much because my salaries are never paid in full. Richard always has a reason to deduct my pay at the end of every month. Besides that, I already promised to loan Mama Ekene one hundred naira to add up her business. I don't think I may be able to fulfil that promise. I need to take my savings seriously, else my dream of having a PHD would die just like that. I also thought about the fire incident the previous day. Thank God it didn't lead to any serious misfortune. Landlady on the other hand has been ranting about increasing my rent. Yeah, I can move out if it doesn't suit me but I've come to love it here. Despite all our differences, we always got each other's back. I saw how Agnes coordinated everyone to help raise some money to pay off Amaka's hospital bills when she was admitted of acute typhoid and malaria, a few weeks ago. I saw how Emeka defended me the day I was harassed by some thugs on my way back from work. He made sure to warn them sternly never to come close to me again, that's after retrieving all the items they took from me. I saw how mad my landlady was the day a woman from the other compound, flogged Ekene mercilessly simply because he got into a fight with her child, leaving her own child untouched, even though he was the one who looked for Ekene's trouble. Landlady almost dislocated her face with thunderous slaps. I can't begin to mention all the incidents but I've seen the love that exists amongst us despite the fact that it's shown in an unusual way. This is one big happy family and I love it here. I'll just ginger landlady a little, so she doesn't execute her threats. At some point my phone rang. A certain number has been calling me lately. It's 4am in the morning. This number keeps calling me and when I answer it, I usually don't hear anyone say a word. Most times I don't bother about it, but now I am. Ibiso as well, has complained about a similar experience. I answered but got no reply as usual. I didn't have a choice but to hang up. “Make una help me oh, make una help me. Ekene dun loss, my pikin dun loss!!” It wasn't long when Mama Ekene began to wail outside. What is even wrong with this woman? So she's just realizing the absence of her child now?. Na wa oh. I understand it's not easy for her seeing her husband fooling around with little girls, young enough to be his daughter but that doesn't mean you should lose yourself in the process. But Mama Ekene has made it a priority to always chase after her husband and his small pin charger girls. She barely takes care of herself; always looking unkempt. Not even to talk about how she starves her son of care and attention. “Ruby! Ruby! Abeg open door” I heard her plead as she banged on the door. I'll not be happy with her if Ekene wakes up. “Ruby abeg now, Ekene dey here?. John tell me say em see you carry am for night. Ruby abeg my pikin dey here?” She asked in a trembling voice. I stayed mute for a while, hoping she wouldn't wake up the sleeping child. “Ruby abeg nw. I know say you been dun tell me make I leave papa Ekene make em do how em want, focus on Myself and Ekene. Ruby e no easy oh. That man dey try me well well….” I still did not utter a word. “Ruby abeg now “. “Come Mama Ekene make we hear word oh. Na by this time you go find your pikin? Leave Ribbon make she sleep. I no need that your noise there oh, I wan pray” Landlady said from the varanda. She could be described as the compound vigilante. She's always awake. “Landlady help me ask her if Eke boy dey here now” she pleaded. “Wetin concern Ribbon and Ekene?. When you dey blow blow your husband you no remember say you get pikin. Just pray say that boy never lose oh”. “Haba! Landlady, you nedey help matters oh. Help me beg….” Just while Mama Ekene was about to plead with her again, the woman began to clap and sing out loud. It's obviously her time for morning prayer. “Ruby abeg now, just tell me say em dat here make my mind come down”. She pleaded. It sounds like she's gonna break into tears soon. Getting up slowly, I unlocked my door. Standing with Akimbo's hands, I faced her even though I couldn't see her quite clearly, despite the dim torchlight in her hands. “Wetin happen?”. I asked “Ruby Eke boy dey here?.... Abeg now. No worry, after today I no go send that man again. I go focus on myself and my pikin. I no go dey fight am and all em small pin charger girls dem again……." She continued talking like one who's taking an oath before an Oracle. I didn't utter a word, I just let the feeling of uncertainty eat her up. “...... Talk kwanu now” “I no see Ekene” I replied with a straight face. Unexpectedly she bursted into tears. I wish I could clearly see her face, and what it looks like to see tears rolled down her cheeks. “I dun dey here my pikin loss….. ah God, ah…..” I let her sob for a while. “Eke boy dey sleep inside” She sniffed, “you say?” She asked, quickly rushing to grab me. “He's sleeping inside”. “Ah Ruby, thank you!!. Thank you well well!”. I couldn't help but chuckle at her sense of gratitude… this woman hugged me so tight that I could barely breathe. “E dun do nw” I pleaded before she suffocated me with her extra large breasts and big body size. “When daybreak I go carry am come”. I said. “Ah, thank you Ruby. Make I go join landlady for prayer today. Na God way safe me”. And she meant it, she quickly went to the varanda and joined the landlady in prayers. These people are something else. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Writer's POV Somewhere in Delta State Managing to drag her traumatized self out of the scene. Uduak went to the garden and made herself comfortable on the floor. The tears weren't flowing anymore, she just felt numb. The image of her husband eating and devouring another woman in her matrimonial bed kept displaying over and over again before her. She should have listened to Ini, she thought to herself. She shouldn't have let the approval of her uncaring parents cloud her sense of reasoning and judgment. See where it had landed her. Her eyes wandered to the scent leaves….. She began to wonder why she had to be human?, what happened to being a scent leaf or better still a water leaf?, what happened to being an animal or an object?. “Ma, what happened?” Grace asked, rushing out from the back door. She must have seen her from the kitchen window. Dragging her eyes off from the unbothered scent leaves, she looked at Grace, and made a small smile. “It's nothing” “Ma, your-” “Grace!!” Emeka's voice cut in frk inside the house Acting like she didn't hear her name being called from inside, Grace continued. “Ma, come inside” she said, trying to pull her up. “Go and attend to him”, Uduak whispered. “Ma, come inside” Grace replied stubbornly, wondering what must have happened this time, to make her madam sit on the floor like this. “Please go and attend-” “Come this stupid girl, didn't you hear me call you?!” Emeka barked, appearing before them only in his underwear. “Sir, I'm helping my mad-” Taking long strides towards them, he grabbed Grace’s arms and pushed her. “Will you get out of this place and go serve my woman some chilled juice!” He barked again. “Stupid girl!” Standing for a while to see if the maid had gone in, he then turned to Uduak. “You, what are you sitting here like a beggar for?. Will you go in and get me something to eat…. I'm famished”. If Uduak had heard a word, he couldn't tell, because she remained seated, unfazed. “Didn’t you hear me?!” He barked, supporting it with a mighty slap, after which he pulled her up forcefully. “Get into that house and get me something to eat!”. Trying to maintain her balance so she wouldn't hit against the wall, she unknowingly stepped on the sharp edge of the rake kept close the the kitchen window, blood immediately spiiled out, while she trued to numb the pain. Aggressively, he grabbed her other arm and dragged her into the kitchen, ignoring her bleeding feet. Leaning against the kitchen counter for support like a zombie, Uduak knew she couldn't do it anymore. All the painful experiences she's had right from childhood down to this very moment flooding her mind, building a kind of rage she's never felt before. At this point she was boiling in uncontrollable anger. Where this kind of effontry had come from she couldn't tell, but she knew at this moment she gonna fight back. “Here….” He stretched forth an apron to her. “Prepare something for me. I'm…..” He couldn't finish his statement when he felt a sharp pain. With widened eyes, he watched as Uduak pushed the kitchen knife further into his stomach; a mean and wicked smile on her face. “Udu….. Udu…. Plea, plea……” “Just die already. That's the only thing that suits someone like you” she whispered in a voice she could barely recognize. Slowly she pulled out the knife, while he was left to stumble on the floor, struggling for his life. 6 Likes |

I promised to make up for keeping you guys waiting. Another chapter for today🎉🎉 Chapter 17 Ekene burst out of the house wearing a bright red Christmas sweater, way too big for his small frame, paired with green shorts that barely reached his knees. His feet were stuffed into oversized pink sandals. “Ah Eke boy!!” I couldn't help but exclaim. To crown it all, he wore a Santa hat. His outfit looked like a wild combination of holiday cheer and a color explosion, yet he looked so confident. “Shey my Christmas clothes fine?” He asked, showing me his brownish teeths. I gave him a pitiful look, how do I tell him he looks hilarious without actually telling him. He looks so excited, it'll be so bad to crush his profound joy and happiness. “Well…. You fine oh. But….” How do I handle this situation now?, his hopeful eyes were peeping into mine, probably expecting a favorable reply. “You fine!” I repeated and kept it that way. From the hushes around, I got to know his parents had just gotten into a very violent fight today of all days. He seems happy now and I'd love to keep it that way. Taking his tiny hands that barely fit into mine, we walked out of the compound. With the way people on the street hailed him, I'm sure he's probably feeling like the best thing that's happened to planet Earth after sliced bread. “I dey go my buy day” he replied to another boy his age when asked where he was going. “Na my Aunty Ruby” he boasted to another. “Eke boy!!! You dey shine ohh” someone said. I didn't even bother to look out for who it was. I was busy thinking of a nice shop where I could get him a better outfit. We can't possibly go to Chicken Republic looking like this, else we'll both find ourselves on Tik Tok because content creators will use us to catch a cruise. Finally, I found one and immediately got him something nice to wear, then proceeded to our destination. After eating, we proceeded to an amusement park where we had some fun. 💚💚💚💚 I realized Ekene was asleep when it was time for us to get down from the taxi. I had to carry him at my back, with our shopping bags in my hand. I was baffled to see some people gathered at the entrance of my compound. There were too many of them, talking and keeping petrified faces. “Madam abeg wetin dey happen?” I asked one of them. “Mama Ekene and Papa Ekene been dey fight oh, I no know how breeze blow them go touch una light wire, na so light start to dey spark for two people room inside una compound, but dem dun stop am sha” the woman replied, laughing seriously. How is that even funny?. I Hope my room is not one of the affected rooms. Oh God. How much more drama do I have to face today? I managed to squeeze myself through the clustered people and walked in. Some youths were surrounded in a particular area with buckets and mop sticks. From the looks of things my room wasn't affected. Thank God!! “Una go pack comot for my house oh!! Una go pack… ah, everyday fight fight, everyday quarrel quarrel, make una pack oh” Landlady was busy screaming on top of her voice. I tried to see if her loud voice had woken the sleeping child, thankfully it hasn't. Carefully, I opened my door and walked in. Slowly, I laid him on my bed and took off his shoes. I still find it hard to believe that the innocent looking boy sleeping peacefully on my bed, is the sharp mouthed Ekene. I pity him though, having to deal with toxic parents is something I'd never wish for any child. “E dun dey spark again oh” someone screamed from outside, making my heart beat. The light in my room went off, making me scared as hell. In a rush, I switched on the torchlight from the phone in my hands. Grabbing my purse and pulling the sleeping child towards me, I made for the door. This time, the spark has generated a fire outbreak. Like one in a secret mission, I ran as fast as I could, just as everyone was. Only when I got to the main road did I realize I wasn't putting on slippers. Wow! Breathing heavily, I walked into a closed shop and sat down, carrying the sleeping child on my lap. I remained there, slapping myself from time to time in an attempt to kill some disturbing mosquitoes while I struggled greatly with my sleepy self. We remained outside until eleven pm when John called to tell me it's safe to return home. What a day! 3 Likes |

Chapter 16 Ruby's POV As the door creaked open, I expected to see someone walk out but none did, rather the door was shut again. Why can't she just come out so the lunch would be done and dusted. Just while I was still thinking about her, Dave appeared into sight, his expression unreadable, yet his presence still commanded the room. He didn't look over at me, but I could feel his awareness, like he knew I was watching. He only muttered a “Good day Ruby” as he walked past me without sparing me a glance. I'm not surprised anymore, indeed blood is thicker than water. Come to think of it, I wonder if they are going to have a family meeting in there, I mean, it's been a while since he visited his brother's office. What then happens to the unexpected lunch?. Slowly, the door opened again. I straightened in my seat, bracing myself. Mrs. Edwards head popped out of Richard's office “Care to join us?” she asked, her voice soft but firm, breaking the stillness in the air. I blinked. Was she being serious?. Join them for what….. First was the unexpected lunch, now….. its the unexplained meeting. I stood up slowly, trying to mask my nervousness. “Yes, ma,” I replied, smoothing my blouse. Walking into the chilled, large office, I settled into the plush leather seat, feeling even more out of place. My heart was racing, but I tried to play it cool. She sat beside me, legs crossed gracefully. I stole a few glances at Dave, wondering what could be going on in his mind. He was leaning against the window, watching us with an expression I couldn't quite read. Even when my mind told me not to look over at Richard, my silly brain wouldn't listen. In a slow motion, my eyes found its way to him, only to get locked in his furious looking eyes. I was shocked to find him glaring at me that I couldn't get myself to look away. For a moment, the silence was thick. Then, Mrs. Edwards turned to me, her honey-colored eyes piercing yet calm. “You must be wondering why I invited you,” she said, a slight smile playing on her lips. I nodded. “Yes, ma. I am.” Finally breaking off the staring contest. She chuckled softly, her laugh melodic. “I like you, Ruby. You have a certain grace about you. And I’ve heard good things.” Good things? From whom? Richard? Dave? Hope she's not trying to sweet talk me, because the atmosphere doesn't suggest so. “I wanted to meet you because I wanted to see what you look like, and I have a feeling you’re more important to them than you think,” she said, her words slow and deliberate. Them? She meant Richard and Dave. I doubt. This woman have not actually told me what her main aim is. “You see,” she continued, “I’ve watched my sons grow up, each in their own way. And I’ve seen how they handle… complications. I can tell when someone makes an impression on them, even when they don’t realize it themselves.” I blinked, trying to absorb what she was saying. “I don’t think I’ve made much of an impression, ma’am,” I said, my voice almost a whisper. This maybe a trap who knows. Her smile deepened. “Perhaps not yet, but I believe you will. And I think it’s time you start seeing yourself the way others might—especially them.” “Mom don't tell me this is why you called for me. I'm very busy and have no time for this little chit chat” Dave said with a bored expression on. “Well I did come to see the lady that has commanded so much attention from my sons, I must confess she's a gorgeous damsel. And also, to put an end to the fight among you brothers” Mrs. Edwards replied sweetly. “Mom, we are not fighting, we only had a disagreement” Richard replied. “One that's taking eternity to get resolved? What in particular is the problem?” She asked, all her sweetness slowly leaving her. “The disagreement ends when your son stops being petty and acts like an actual adult that he is. It ends when Richie starts treating Ruby fairly, like she's human and her feelings count, that's when this all ends” Dave replied. When did the anger suddenly set in?. I mean, a few minutes ago he looked bored. “No. The disagreement ends when your son terminate the rubbish contract he made between my boobless and flat assed secretary. That's when it ends” Richard fired in return. The deadly glares exchanged between them sent shivers all over my body. “You know if this was to be Korea, you'd probably get sued and maybe jailed”. “This is not Korea. You lived in Korea, I lived here. And here in Nigeria, anything goes. You care so much about her feelings than mine?” “What rubbish feelings of yours do I have to care about Richie?, your office sexual scandals?. Every two months this company is in search of a new secretary, what does that -” “That should be my cup of tea!. I only have you a little privilege to employe a secretary for me, just this once. And what did you do?, you took advantage of it!” “So, was having her locked up the other night necessary?” Wait did I hear him right. I knew it!! I knew this wicked soul had something to do with my distress that night. How petty can he be. “What….. Richie what is Dave talking about?” Mrs. Edwards asked obviously confused. But the clown said nothing. “Was asking her to meet you up at a restaurant for three hours and not showing up necessary?. Was asking her to go to a non-existent company on your behalf necessary….” How did Dave come to know about all this?. I never told anyone about this incidents and it's pretty obvious Richard didn't too, because he looks like one who's seen a ghost. I remember vividly the day he sent me to that non-existent company. I spent close to two hours trying to locate the place to no avail. At some point I had to return to the company and was so surprised to see how calm and comfortable he was when I narrated my outdeal to him. This man is so mean, so terrible and wicked!!. Mrs. Edwards stared at him with mouths open, she too couldn't believe her ears. Never for once did I think all those incidents were planned, well except the day I was locked in. “That contract will not be terminated. Never!!” Dave said firmly, clinching his fits. “Sir, please. I plead I get transferred to-” “I'd suggest you shut your pretty mouth!” Dave directed at me, but that won't stop me. I can't do this shit anymore. I understand the contract won't be getting terminated but I can at least get transferred. It's so messy here, getting caught between two brothers is even more messier. I can't do this. “Son please, just terminate the contract or get her transferred. She doesn't want to -” “Mum please. I'm done having this conversation” he said to his mother then turned to his brother. With a tone of finality he said, “I understand you are the CEO and I respect that. But don't let me flip the script. Don't dare me Richy”. For a while no one said or did anything. Just the sound of heavy breath and the coldness from the air conditioner. After a while, he took a step, placing a soft kiss on his mother's forehead, he turned around and walked towards the door but hauled “Ruby is efficient, hardworking and resourceful. She's an indespensible asset. That's all that matters”, with this, he opened the door and walked out. Taking a quick glance at Richard, I turned around and ran after Dave. “Sir please, just get me transferred or better still terminate….” “I will never consent to the termination of that contract. So go back and do your job” he replied, eyes still focused on his way. “I thought you cared about my well-being and happiness!” I bursted, obviously frustrated at his sudden stiff headedness. He looked at me like I've grown two heads. “While creating a comfortable work space for every employee is important to me, the success of this company is of upmost priority to me”. He replied, looking me straight in the eye. So it's all about the company and not even about me, why does this hurt so much?. --- Meanwhile, in Delta State, Uduak was still lost in thought after Grace had left the room. The conversation they’d just had weighed heavily on her heart. Could she really make the decision to leave Emeka? Grace’s words echoed in her mind: “They never really loved you from the start. Why stay?” For years, Uduak had been conditioned to seek approval from her parents, to equate their pride in her with her own self-worth. But now, with a baby on the way, everything felt different. She had someone else to think about—someone who would rely on her to make the right choices. Uduak got up and walked to the small window in the kitchen, staring out at the dusty road that led to the town. She placed a hand on her stomach, feeling the faint flutter of life inside her. Grace was right. She had to make a decision, for her own sake and for the sake of her child. She turned back to the stew boiling on the stove and reached for her phone. She wasn’t sure who she was going to call yet—maybe her sister Ini, maybe a lawyer, maybe someone who could help her figure out the next step. All she knew was that staying in this marriage was no longer an option. Not when she deserved better. Just when she made to place a call, her attention was drawn to an erotic sound, making her pause for a while. The sound was so loud that she could swear it was that she was thinking it was. Without giving it much thought, her both legs found their way out of the kitchen. In a slow pace, she continued following the sound until it lead her to the masters room. Taking a peep into the slightly opened door, her eyes shine in shock as she witnesses the Nigerian version of “365 days”. Her throat immediately went dry and her eyes wet. Clasping her hands over her opened mouth to avoid distracting the busy couple from their wild sexual adventure, she continued to watch as her legs felt so heavy to take her out of there. What can be more agonizing than this?. 🤎🤎🤎🤎 Ruby's POV “Babe I'm so heartbroken” I expressed over the phone as today's event kept replaying in my mind. “Na you go dey date who nedey date you now” Ibiso replied as she bursted into laughter. “I didn't even feel this hurt when Tayo broke up with me” seems my words added to her amusement, because she was literally laughing so loudly. “Stop laughing now” “Why won't I laugh?” She asked amidst laughter. “The guy never professed feelings to you. He never made any romantic gesture towards you. He was only nice to you just like everyone else. Na you go dey catch feelings….. lover girl” she began to laugh again. At this point, I had to join her in laughter, because her laugh was making my laugh laugh- if there's anything like that. “Ode….. I told you to stop nurturing those feelings you didn't listen to. You no dey date but Dem dun break your heart” I mocked, making us laugh harder. This is so hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. Silly me. “From the onset, he told you he was employing you to put an end to his brothers office romance. So what do you expect?..... Or didn't he ask you if you had a small ass and boobs?” my werey of a friend asked. “Madam rest jor, you should be sympathetic towards me rather than taking his side” I cajoled, as I crossed over to my street, sweating profusely. “Ah some people too do oh. Ruby you too do. Rest ni. Leave the focused young man alone and face your work. He is sticking to the reason he employed you, you too stick to your job, love girl……” Do I have a choice?, except I want to be served another breakfast. My conversation with Ibiso continued until I got to the front of my compound where I had to bid her goodbye. “Aunty Ruby welcome”. Ekene greeted me, rushing to help me with my bag. “Eke boy, thank you. How are you now?” I asked, as I carefully crossed the large pavement. If one is not careful, you'll slip and hit your head somewhere. That's an experience I'd never wish for anyone, except you know….. Richard. “Today na my buy day oh” “Birthday or buy day?” I asked amused, despite knowing what he meant. The Ekene construct of English can be so funny. So confident, he repeated “My buy day”. Laughing softly and shaking my head, I brought out my keys from my purse. “So wetin I go buy for you? I asked. “Buy house for me. I wan comot for this house. Everytime my papa and my mama dey fight”. At this point I knew it's not funny anymore. His eyes could tell he meant it. Smiling softly, I bent a little. “I wish I could get you a house but…….. What about a plate of Ice cream?” I asked, hoping it'll help with his mood. “Yeaaaahhh!!!” “Oya go and get dressed, while I shower and -” “That cloth my mummy buy for me for Christmas na em I go wear” he shouted excitedly as he rushed off. Funny boy. 5 Likes |

Chapter 15 “So you are Ruby?” A sonorous voice asked. The moment she had walked in, I felt a shift in the air, like someone had turned up the elegance dial to a hundred. She was stunning—caramel skin that looked like it had been kissed by the sun, and jet-black hair that cascaded down her back in perfect waves. Her cheekbones were high and sharp, giving her an air of sophistication, while her honey-colored eyes seemed to take in everything around her, missing nothing. I couldn’t help but stare, mesmerized by the way she moved—tall and graceful, like she owned the very ground she walked on. I tried to focus, pretend I wasn’t completely in awe, but it was impossible. Her presence demanded attention, yet there was something soft about her too. Despite her striking beauty and the aura of authority she carried, there was warmth in her eyes. She didn’t seem like the kind of person who would make you feel small, even though she could have, with just one look. I was curious, trying to piece together who she might be. Someone this poised had to be important, but I couldn’t place her. All I knew was that she commanded the room without saying a word, and I found myself inexplicably drawn to her, as if there was something more to her than what meets the eye. But why did she seem so familiar? “Ruby right?” She asked again, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Yes I am…. You're welcome ma” I replied, loving the way her eyes stared warmly at me. “You look exactly as I have imagined” What exactly does she mean by that?. “It's your lunchtime. Why don't we have lunch together” She suggested while her perfectly manicured hands tapped graciously on my desk. I was flabbergasted at her confidence and effortless command of authority. With a smile on my face, “May I know who you are please?” I requested. “You just think about it while I say hello to my other baby” and that was it. She was majestically walking into my boss's office. Wait, did she just say her other baby?... I clenched my fists at the thought of that. Does that mean…… She's Richard and Dave's mother? --- I sat there, my mind racing. I still couldn’t believe it. This woman, the one who had swept into my office like a breath of fresh air mixed with an iron fist, was “their” mother. Richard and Dave. How could I not have known? I mean, I've heard so much about her from the other staff members. But something about the way she spoke to me, with that casual authority, had given her away. And yet, I felt a pang of uncertainty. What did she mean by, “You look exactly as I imagined”? Had Richard or Dave mentioned me to her? Clicking my tongue, No, that couldn’t be it. They barely acknowledged me beyond work. As I sat there, mulling over the conversation, the door to Richard’s office closed with a soft click. She was in there now, speaking to him. And then there was Helene one and Helene two, as nosy as ever, breathing down my neck like I had the inside scoop on a top-secret meeting. “So beautiful and elegant,” she had said, and I couldn’t disagree. But there was more to Mrs. Edwards than beauty; there was something about her that felt… intimidating. I focused back on my work, though my mind refused to settle. What would a lunch with Mrs. Edwards be like? Why did she invite me, of all people? Maybe she was just being polite, but something told me it was more than that. Wait, what if it has something to do with the other night?. I mean, after that day the two brothers, Dave rather have been avoidant towards Richard. Everything about them screams professional in all sense, unlike before where their relationship was intense and strong. But then no one knows what the whole beef that night was all about. Maybe it was about me that's why she's requesting to have lunch with me. Nah, I don't think so. Just as I had said, the brothers barely acknowledge me beyond work. As I typed, my thoughts spiraled. Was this woman going to make my life harder? Would Richard treat me differently now that his mother had acknowledged me? I heard the door creak open again. My heart skipped a beat. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Writer's POV Somewhere in Delta State “Madam, why don’t you want to leave this marriage?” Grace asked as she sliced the onions, tears streaming down her cheeks. Emeka and his 'Obim', as he affectionately called her, had stepped out, giving Uduak and Grace the space to talk as usual. “My dear, I really don’t know what to say,” Uduak replied, turning off the gas while the pot of stew bubbled furiously. “I just don’t have the courage to do it.” “But your father has money now.” Uduak glanced at the young girl, wishing she understood how complicated things were. “That’s what makes it even harder,” she said, settling onto a stool beside Grace. “If my father had money, I wouldn’t put up with this nonsense,” Grace replied. “I understand, dear.” Uduak paused, as if recalling a painful memory. “My father, Chief Sunday, is one of those men who values male children over females, despite being educated and wealthy. I was born six years after their marriage, and he was thrilled. But when my mother had my sister, Iniobong, he was disappointed. After that, my mother couldn't have any more children.” She took a sip of water, her expression distant. Grace listened intently, eager to understand why her madam remained in such a difficult situation. “After Ini, my father’s attitude changed completely. He became cold and indifferent, paying little attention to my sister and me. My mother, frustrated, suggested he take a second wife, and he did. My stepmother quickly gave him six sons...” “Ah, na wa oh,” Grace exclaimed, her mouth agape, prompting a soft chuckle from Uduak. “Yes. My father poured all his love and attention into my stepbrothers. But the worst part?” Uduak asked, hoping Grace would catch on. “Our mother couldn’t show us love either. She blamed us for being girls. I mean, who does that? Was it our fault? She paid us little attention, preferring shopping and vacations. When asked about her behavior, she would claim it was her way of coping with not giving my father what he wanted. She made us feel like we had ruined her happy marriage.” Uduak’s gaze drifted to the window, as if searching for answers. “Some people shouldn’t be parents, and it’s unfortunate that mine are among them. My sister and I were raised by a maid while our half-brothers basked in the love of our parents. I still don’t understand what makes a male child so special that they would treat us this way…” Her voice trailed off, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears. “The only things my parents provided were financial necessities; everything else was left to our maid. Whenever my brothers excelled at something, my father would use it to taunt my sister and me, constantly reminding us we weren’t good enough and could never measure up to a boy. I grew up with zero confidence and a low self-esteem. It was tough, Grace. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right. I was heartbroken, sad, and often moody. I had friends at school, but isolating myself felt safer; at least I wouldn’t be compared to anyone like I was at home.” She paused, her expression turning bittersweet. “Ini, on the other hand, was different. Her confidence was rock solid. While I sulked, she was determined to outshine our brothers. She consistently topped her exams and excelled in competitions, always striving to prove herself. But when she realized that no matter what she accomplished, we would always be seen as inferior, she eventually gave up.” “Ah… na wa oh,” Grace replied, still struggling to comprehend how such things could happen. “When Emeka came along, it felt like a breath of fresh air. For the first time, my parents praised me for doing something right. They adored him—he came from a good family, was educated, and most importantly, he was a man.” Uduak let out a bitter laugh at the irony. “They really do favor men,” Grace said, laughing along. “Yes, they do. It felt so good to see my parents smile at me and say they were proud of me, all because of a man. For the first time, I felt proud of myself. I allowed nothing to come between Emeka and me, even when the red flags were glaring. I ignored them, even when Ini warned me seriously. If this was what it took to gain my parents' approval, I was willing to do it. That’s how I ended up with this shameless dog.” “Ah, na wa oh… but you can still leave. Don’t you want to avoid your parents’ shame? You’re not a little girl anymore. Who do parents help, really? My dad got my mom pregnant, and after I was born, she handed me over to her sister. I don’t owe them anything. It’s my aunt who matters to me now,” Grace said, raising her hands in the air as if starting a praise session, which made Uduak smile faintly. “Are you afraid they won’t love you anymore? They didn’t really love you to begin with! Don’t worry about anyone else. If this man is going to hurt you, you need to stand up for yourself, or just grab your things and run far away,” Grace urged. “Grace!!” Uduak turned to the door, then back at Grace. “You should go see what he wants,” she said, reflecting on the young girl’s words. 4 Likes |

Chapter 14 Pacing around her room in total distress, Uduak’s mind kept giving out more than a hundred suggestions all at once. She walked up to the large mirror and stared at her own image. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her physical appearance. She was a beauty to behold, something everyone knows, Emeka included. What then is the problem? Scoffing at the ridiculous thoughts on her mind, she walked away from the mirror. She knew she should have left the marriage the very first time he showed an act of disrespect, or maybe the second time… but No, she didn't. Feeling so pathetic and ashamed of herself, she slumped on the bed as tears rolled down her eyes. It's funny how her friends envy her all because they feel she has a rich husband who takes care of all her bills. Only if they knew. A faint knock on her door, had her wiping off her tears in a haste and sitting upright. In a slow motion the door opened to reveal Grace, taking a peep into the room. “Oh Grace… it's you” she thought it was Emeka. “Yes ma” Grace replied as she took some steps in. “I came to-” “Go to the bar and get me four bottles of Desperado”. “Ma, you say?” Grace thought she didn't hear her right so she asked. “I said….. Get. Me. Four. Bottles. Of. Desperado!!” “Yes, yes ma” without any more hesitation, she hurried out of the room to get them. In no time, Grace returned with the drinks. Standing by the side of the bed, she watched as Uduak gulped in the contents like it was some freshly made orange juice. It was astonishing and saddening at the same time. “I failed. I failed woefully….” A loud hysterical laughter erupted from her lips, as she took in more content from the bottle. “Look at me Grace. Look at me…. I failed” she laughed again. “I failed to fight against my father, I failed to protect myself and Iniobong from him. I failed to find the right partner and to make matters worse…. I failed to stand up for myself and leave this shit hole of a marriage…” she paused and unexpectedly smiled brightly at Grace, who stood not knowing what to do. “But nah, I won't fail to protect this little angel growing in me. I won't”. Grabbing the third bottle like she’s having a beef with it, she cracked the cover open with her teeths and made to drink from it, when Grace rushed to take it away. “Madam e dun do now” she pleaded. Scoffing sadly Uduak asked, “you know I'm weak right?”..... “Answer me!!” She yelled when she didn't get a reply. “You no weak ma”. “Yes I am….. oh Ini. You need to see Ini, she's the opposite of me” a small smile appeared on her face. “She's bold and courageous. Funny how she fights father whenever he tries to bully us. I'm supposed to do the protecting, but stupid me. I'm always weak, but Ini?, Ini is never afraid to speak up for me and herself”.... Even though Grace didn't know who Ini was, she listened attentively. “You know Ini right?”.... Grace nodded, faking a smile. “Yeah, you should know her. Who wouldn't know her?.....” Uduak smiled broadly this time. “Her beauty, charms and charisma are never hidden. And her eyes?...... Very endearing and captivating. She took after mother's eyes…..” just like that, that was how Grace ended up spending more thirty minutes listening to her about Iniobong who she has never heard of. Well, her rescue came when Uduak finally feel asleep. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Ruby's POV “Shebi na beg I go beg una to pay Nepa bill eh?. John!!!! Way your money?”. Yeah, you guessed right. That's the Lioness of the best compound in Agadaga street. The weather is so hot, and it's pretty obvious the compound is about to get hotter. I just hope all this hotness dries my clothes. Minding my business, I continued to wash the few clothes remaining for me. “Landlady make I go workshop tomorrow, I go bring the money for you”. “Ogun kee you der!!. Everytime make you go workshop. No be the same thing you tell me yesterday and all those days way dun pass?! Linus!” “Eh nothing come out all those days now. I get faith say something go come out tomorrow” John replied, as he made himself comfortable on pavement in front of his room. “Faith…. You know wetin be faith?. Mtcheeew!! Na just mumu dey worry you. I no wan use my leg kun find you tomorrow oo, because you no go like wetin I go do you. You know me”. “Agnes, wetin be the problem?”. It's obviously turn by turn. “Landlady money no dey. Shebi I tell you say my mama no well?. I send money go give -” “Abeg abeg no sing that yeye song for me. Wetin concern me concern that one?. Na small three thousand five hundred na em you dey mention money you send give your mama. I dun tell you, leave that your kabukabu boyfriend, find man way get money, you say no” “Landlady which kin stupid talk be that one na?. Na small three five, na em make you dey insult me?”. “Why I no go insult you?. Tell me” “This woman respect yourself oh, if not one day I go change am for you” Agnes warned sternly. It's about to go down!! “Agnes, so you dun grow. You dun dey open eye for me…. Okay, you dun dey learn from Ruby ba?....” How did I get into this? “Since Ruby enter here, you dun dey get mouth for where I dey” she said further. “Landlady please, I don't have strength for this drama. How did I get involved now eh?” I asked. This woman is always looking for trouble and I don't like it. “How you no go enter?. You go just dey use calm-calm way dey do your own badmouth. You think say I no know you?” Sometimes I used to think maybe, there's a remote that controls this woman's sense of reasoning. “Thank God I have paid my electricity bill. Avoid me please” I said, as I stood up to dispose of the dirty water in my bucket. “Eh…. Use mic tell everybody say you dun pay. Very soon I go increase your rent” she said after me. Ignoring her I continued doing my thing. She stopped picking on me and faced Mama Ekene. She took the bill collection in turns, after she was done, she marched out. “But true true oh, Ruby na you give Agnes mind to dey reply landlady oh”. I heard John say, a few minutes after the landlady marched out. “How?” I asked. I could see the others are eager to hear from him too. “Check am out now. All of us here dey sabi fight people oh, we dey even fight ourself but we nedey ever carry our craze reach where landlady dey. But you, you go just dey use English English dey tell her talk….” “Na true!!” Mama Ekene interjected. “Na so she go just dey calm oh, you fit swear say she no even talk anything. If she give you attitude eh”. These people have finished me. Me, attitude ke?. Funny. “Make una leave Ruby jor. The girl no get problem at all, she no just like when person-” “Agnes relax der!. Before, you dey open eye for landlady?” John attacked, shining his eyes like he's about to swallow her. “You dey open eye for everybody but no be landlady jor, wetin you dey buga?”. “You Ruby, you get bad character but you no know” Mama Ekene said. “But I like am Sha oh. You nedey find trouble na why I like you, but you nedey gree make person put hand for your eye too” she added with admiration. “Make una leave Ruby, the girl character gel. Which one be say she dey give attitude eh. Na landlady just dey fine unnecessary trouble. Ruby no get problem at all” Amaka defended. All this while she has been silent. I chuckled softly….. these people have not told me yet, the color of their problem. Dave and Richard are my problem. Speaking of which, do you know Richard actually deducted twenty percent from my salary?. Saying that my article was trash and wasn't realistic. I don't even want to think about that. 3 Likes |

Chapter 13 “What the hell Ruby?!” I didn’t mean to fall asleep at the office, but as soon as I sat down at my desk, the warmth of the room started to lull me. My eyelids grew heavy, and before I knew it, I was leaning back in my chair, the soft hum of the air conditioner blending with the gentle tap of keyboards around me. My head tilted slightly to the side, and my mind drifted into that comforting space between wakefulness and sleep. Just five minutes, I told myself, but I knew better. Now I'm here staring into the burning eyes of Richard. If looks could kill, I'm sure I'd be dead by now. I broke off the intense stare and rubbed my burning eyes. I still feel very sleepy. I didn't sleep a wink all through the night even though I was lodged at a very cozy hotel. I find it extremely difficult to sleep when I go somewhere I'm not familiar with. “Have those typed and sent to my mail!” He instructed sternly, throwing some papers at my desk “Any idea if Dave is in his office?” He asked and I shook my head, why does he feel like I'd know that?. He opened his mouth to say something again but shut them up and left. Inhaling deeply, I stared at the papers, then at his retreating figure. I haven't set my eyes on Dave since today. After he yelled at me last night, nothing much was said between us except when he informed me he'd be lodging me in the hotel. I don't know if I have the right to be, but I'm upset at him you know. He hurt my feelings by yelling at me. Besides, I was only concerned about him. He has never spoken to me that way and it hurts pretty much. He didn't even spare me a glance all through the ride. At some point I began to wish I never called him. I'm sure if I didn't, he'd probably not have fought with his brother, which I'm sure he did, because the tension I felt back there was real. They didn't even exchange pleasantries which is very unlikely to happen, and the fact that they both were there because of me just makes me believe they did have a fight. What if they did fight but it wasn't about me and the whole night palava?. I mean, even when they do argue because of how Richard treats me, Dave never gets this upset. Yeah, he gets angry but not to this extent. Rather, it's Richard whose anger would probably want to burn down the place. But last night, the reverse was the case. Oh God! My head hurts from thinking about these two brothers. “Thinkerbell” someone snapped his fingers at me, interrupting my thoughts. Speak of the devil. “Good day Sir” I greeted. “Yeah Ruby” he replied. I said nothing and began flipping the pages of the document before me, pretending to be truely focused, whereas I'm seriously fighting with the urge to look into those charming eyes of his. “Why is your face like that?. Are you planning to beat me up?” He asked, amusement written all over his face. Frowning my face further “no Sir, I'm just busy at the moment” He chuckled on hearing me say that. What's so funny?. Rolling my eyes internally, I continued flipping the pages. “No, you're not busy at the moment. You're just fuming to be busy at the moment and even when you are busy, you always make time to look up at me and smile ....” Jesus!! This is see-finish at the highest level. Is it really that obvious?. Ah Ruby see what you have done to yourself. Stopping my hands from flipping the next page, I looked up at him and made a small smile, one I had to force myself to do cause right now I feel so embarrassed. “Is there anything I could do for you Sir?” I asked, with an overly nice voice. I know I might be overreacting but my ego is hurt. The fact that he's standing here acting like nothing happened is so annoying. He paused for a while. “Are you upset about something?” Oh, see who lost some memories. “Why should I?. Everything is fine” I shrugged as I looked everywhere except at him. “Okay, I'll take your word for it, enjoy your day”. Just like that he walked away. On a normal day, he'd walk into his brother's office but he didn't do that today….. This only confirms my suspicion. On the other hand, can't he see I'm upset at him?. I know Dave is a very emotional intelligent person, I'm sure he knows. So he doesn't care?. He really doesn't care about how he yelled at me and hurt me?!. How I wish I could uncrush him right now, if there's anything like that. Or unlike….. no, what I feel for him is more than just a like….. yeah, unlove him right now. But isn't this stupidity?. Like, why the hell am I even upset?. It's not like he's my friend, boyfriend or whatsoever. This person is basically my superior. Oh, what has come over me?. Inhaling deeply, I walked up to the water dispenser and got myself a glass of chilled water. Gulping down all its content into my throat, I felt relaxed a little bit. That man saved my sorry ass the previous day irrespective of the late hour I called and how uncomfortable it might have been for him. What if he was with his girlfriend when I called that night?. Nah, I don't think so. I don't think he has a girlfriend. But, what if he does have. I got more water and gulped in. What if he had an accident on his way to come get me?...... Forget that. He's way out of my league and he didn't think twice to help me out, he even had me lodged, had food and drinks ordered for me and made sure I was comfortable before he left. What an ungrateful person I must be. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I went home crestfallen because I didn't get to see Dave and properly thank him. Well, tomorrow is another day. I walked into my compound and saw that my neighbors were all seated outside playing ludo. Nice. “Una good evening oh” my pidgin language is beginning to get better. “Ah Ruby, e be like say you no sleep for house yesterday oh”…… if that's just a comment or an indirect question, I don't know and don't even care to know. Right now, all I want is to take a warm bath and crash into bed. All my body aches and my eyelids feel so heavy. “I see when she comes back this early morning, come comot again”. Papa Ekene said. “Ruby where you sleep now?” Mama Ekene asked, increasing her tone for no just reason. “Make una leave me abeg, I no get strength” I managed to say as I struggled to unlock the stubborn padlock before me. “You no go tell us now, na your wellbeing and safety dey us important oh”. I stopped fighting with my padlock and looked at John, it felt nice hearing him say that. Smiling tiredly, I opened my mouth to reply but had to shut it up when the compound’s lioness came in from nowhere. “Ribbon say she sleep off for work oh” She said, clapping her hands in a ridiculous manner and laughing mockingly. The others looked at me amused. “True true you sleep for work?” Papa Ekene asked hopefully. Why does he look excited? “Na me even wake her from sleep sef. Her voice just dey like person way dun dey sleep tey tey. Wetin just fit her na make she dey house dey chop, make person dey send her money. Small strength like this, Ribbon no get” “I don't know the satisfaction you derive from ridiculing people. Shebi I begged you not to lock the passage? Didn't I?, now you've rushed to come tell them how I slept off at work. Please excuse me abeg” I said as I finally opened the door and went into my room, leaving her staring at my retreating figure. I know I shouldn't have spoken to her like that but this woman can be so annoying. It's just like she enjoys people's discomfort and feeds off their pain. Ten percent respect for herself and zero respect for others. Mtcheeew! 💚💚💚💚 Writer's POV Somewhere in Delta State Uduak returned from the SIM registration center where she had gone to go get another SIM card for her new phone, as Emeka had smashed her previous phone against the wall and had the SIM cards flushed into the toilet. because he caught her talking on the phone with someone who he perceived to be a man. Rather than inquiring who it was she was speaking with, he took action against the phone and concluded his display with two hot slaps on her cheeks. She stayed awake that night crying her eyes out. She walked into the living room to see her husband and a lady seated in the dining room, while Grace served them. She looked at the unfamiliar face again and began to wonder who she was. Could it be a relation of Emeka?. So far, he has never brought in any of his women, so that woman there couldn't possibly be one. “Madam welcome” Grace greeted, bowing slightly despite being told many times to stop doing that. Uduak only smiled at her, greeted those in the dining room and walked into her room. She didn't even care if they replied to her or not. She was famished. After changing into something light and comfortable, she walked out and went straight into the kitchen. “Grace, any idea who that woman is?” Of course, she didn't have the courage to ask her husband who the visitor was. “Madam I no know oh, Oga carry her and her big bag come oh” “Really?”..... “She just dey call am baby, baby. Me I no know oh” Grace said as she continued arranging the washed dishes on the rack. “I see”. Dishing from the pot of Afang soup she had prepared before leaving the house, she settled on the wooden chair in the kitchen and began unwrapping the wrap of garri before her. Her love for Afang soup is way beyond human imagination. In no time, she was done eating. It always amazes Grace how quickly she finishes eating garri and Afang soup but when it comes to other kinds of food, she could probably spend the whole day eating it. “Ah, thank you Grace, please help me with the hand towel okay” she said, washing her hands in the sink. “Come Grace, wash that soup away. I don't like how it smells. It's so uncomfortable here”. Uduak turned to see where those instructions were coming from. “Excuse me?” She was confused. “Madam shift jor. Grace I don't want to perceive this rubbish smell when I walk into this kitchen again. Go take those dishes away, we're done eating” Just like that, the lady with a big backside instructed and turned around, swaying her hips as she walked away. Uduak couldn't believe what just happened, it felt like she was watching a movie. Without wasting any time, she followed suit, only to see both her husband and the lady as lovey-dovey in the living room. “Emeka, can I talk to you?” She asked, trying her best to sound calm and collected. “Madam don't even waste your time, just go to your room and sleep” “So it has gotten to the point where you now bring in your women?” “Madam you are disturbing my peace please”. Not knowing what to do next or say, she quietly walked away, even though her heart felt so heavy. 5 Likes |

Chapter 12 “Oh babe, did you see Dave today?” I overheard someone ask. Even if I wanted to mind my business and keep moving, I just knew it won't be possible after all, it's Dave they're talking about. I stood behind the slightly opened door, as I took a peek into the office. There sat two friends who bear the same name, and are colleagues. Yeah, we call them Helene one and Helene two. The fair one is Helene one and the dark one is Helene two. “Omo, I couldn't even utter a ‘good morning‘ when he walked past me this morning. Likeeeeee, ah” Helene one replied. Placing her hand on her cheek like someone who's daydreaming. “The fact that he is unaccessible is crazy….” It seemed like Helene one wanted to cut in “..... chill now let me explain. Yeah, he is jovial, friendly and all that. He is still unaccessible. He gives you his attention but it still feels like you don't have his attention. His interactions with you are friendly but only on the surface. It's never deep, I don't know if you get me?” Helene two asked, hoping her friend understood the aspect she's talking from. “Babe, I dunno oh but I feel that's how both of them are now. Both of them are unaccessible. You can't get Richard's attention except you are busty and have a big ass. Even at that, if you throw yourself at him, he'd decline. He loves to go for them himself” Helene one argued. “Correct. But it hurts more with Dave. No one knows his preferences in women and that makes it even more difficult to get him. Don't you get it. It's difficult with Dave” Helene two stressed, with a look of frustration on her face. I agree with Helene two. Dave can be by your side, talking to you and it still feels like his whole being isn't with you, leaving you wanting more of him. Drawing closer to her friend, Helene one pointed at her ass. “Yeah, you're right. Since I know Richard's preference, I've been working on my ass. Can't you see it's getting bigger?” She asked with a smirk. I see, this is getting interesting. “Then how do you get his attention, without making it obvious?” “That's not a problem. Once I get that killer shape his women has, I'd position myself where he can easily see me. Shoot!!!. And there we go. Since I can't have Dave, I can at least have Richard. I must have one of them”. Pride and satisfaction evident in her voice as she played with her artificial curly hair. “Well, I'll remain hopeful. One day Dave may pick interest in me” Helene two expressed with a shrug. “Babe, I was hopeful like you, oh. Until one day, I caught sight of Richard banging Funmi, his former secretary in his office. Ah babe…..” she pulls her legs together and hugs them. “That guy is sooooo good. Thank God no one caught me peeping into his office. That scene has never left my memory. I get wet and aroused whenever I think about it…… So, I'm working hard to get a taste of that”. “Give me the gist in details now “ Helene two pleaded, sitting up excitedly. Just when I anticipated the gist, my phone began to ring. I quickly rushed off before they could see me. Why didn't this phone wait for me to leave before ringing? I managed to rush into the lady's toilet. “Hello Sir”. “Where the hell are you?. To my office, now!!”. I rolled my eyes at his grumpy voice, he doesn't know how easy it is to hate him. “Where's the article?” He asked, immediately I walked into his office. “Oh, that. I'm not done with it Sir”. “You were quick to tell me how badly raised I am, but slow to write an article on how to raise someone. Aren't you a hypocrite?.” He scoffs. “You think you have a better judgment of people?.....”his brows raised at me as he stared maliciously. “How far have you gone?” “On the sixth page” Nodding his head “I want to see it on my table immediately I walk in tomorrow, else…. Twenty percent from your salary would be deducted” he said. ~~~~~ “Twenty percent?!! For just a yeye write up?” Ibiso asked over the phone. “What can I say?” “So, because he can't fire you, he wants to be cutting your salary small small for unnecessary rubbish eh?” “Obviously, look babe I have to go. Let me focus and do this stuff the day is half gone already “. I said as I typed away. I had to finish the paperwork I had already handed before I could go to that funny task. For hours I continued working, flipping files upon files and typing on my computer. Rushing to the photocopier, I did some photocopying and stapling. After that, I began to work on the warehouse report I had taken earlier. Then I proceeded to the ‘almighty task’. Omo, my back aches. God! I typed until I ran out of ideas. Then, I sought the help of Ibiso, who gave me her own opinion too. Deciding to rest my head a little, I drifted into an uncomfortable sleep. I was woken up by my phone ringing in a very dark room. Taking my phone, I looked at the screen. Landlady. “Ribbon!!. You nedey come back house?!” her voice was so loud that I had to shift the phone away from my ear “Come back house?” I asked, astonished. “See time, I wan lock this passage oh. Where you waka go, abi you dun go man house?”. What is she talking about?. Realization suddenly hit me. “ Oh my God! Ma please don't lock, I slept off at the office. I'd be back soon” I pleaded. Getting up immediately. “That one concern you. See time, 10:55…..” “Landlady abeg now…. I sleep off” “I dun dey lock. Go find where you go sleep” and that's it, she hung up on me. Quickly, I turned on my phone's torch, packed my things and walked to the door but it refused to open. I tried again but it wasn't opening. How possible is this?. I immediately dialed the head security's number. “Hello, sorry for calling at this time but I need-” “Ashawo!!. Una nedey rest, the day I go catch you eh. Go marry! Leave person husband. Ah!!” And that's it. The angry bird hung up. This is not good. Who do I call now?. I tried screaming for help but that won't help because of the loud music blasting from the next place…. I think there's a club there. Dave?!. But it's too late to call him now. I can't even call Richard, who knows if he's not the one responsible for this?. I decided to call Dave even though I was skeptical about it. It's better than calling Richard. I called twice but he didn't pick up. I had to send him a text. I waited for a long while and became afraid that he wasn't going to come. I mean, it's 11:20 already. Maybe he's asleep. I can't stay here all alone, I'm so scared. “What's that?” I muttered to myself and paid attention. I could hear some noise….. something like a bunch of keys. Slowly the door opened to reveal Richard. Like Richard?, I didn't call him. Wait, this just confirms my suspicion of him being the one who locked me in here, If not, why is he here?. “Will you quit staring at me like a frog and move?” He was so irritated. “I didn't ask you to come save me” I muttered “What did you say?” “Nothing Sir”. I walked out with him following behind, so many thoughts in my mind. What if he strangles me from behind? Or hit me with a big stick?. I continued walking despite my fears until I got outside to see the security guards all standing, looking at us or me rather. “Madam sorry, I think say person no dey the office as light no dey and we dun off the gen. I kuku no look inside” one of them explained. So it's not this jerk behind me?. “It's fine” I managed to smile. “Ruby” I looked ahead to see Dave walking towards us. “Are you feeling cold?” he asked, giving me a hoodie without hearing my response. I didn't bother to reply, I simply took it from him. “C’mon let's go,” he said, taking my hands. I saw him glance briefly at his brother before he pulled me towards his car which was parked outside the gate. Did something happen between them?. I kept wondering even as we settled in his car. I turned back to see Richard still staring in our direction. The energy seemed weird. “Seat belt” I nodded and fastened my seatbelt. “Are you okay Sir?. Did you argue with your brother?” I asked, he looked very pissed. I have never seen him this way before. “It's nothing”. He replied but we both know that's not true. His hold on the steering is getting tighter. “But you don't -” “Ruby!” I was startled by his tone. I immediately kept my mouth shut. 5 Likes |
