In DIY fora, the internationally acceptable convention is for members to list their gears/equipment in their signature so that others can read their posts in conjunction with their equipment list. This practice, if adopted in this forum will put members' posts in better perspectives and reduce misconceptions.

I let the matter die to preserve the peace grin But as it has been resurrected again......

It appeared to me that he was cleverly fudging his actual PV array size, making it seem as if a 1.6kw array 'very similar' to @Durodee's was generating circa 8.9kwh regularly on a daily basis here in Lagos. This would imply he had discovered some holy grail of PV yield optimization or owned a super performing kind of panel or other variable responsible for his superior results....

The reality I 'knew' was that he had an oversized PV array around 2.4kw and stating this fact would have helped any reader to understand and put his yield results in proper perspective. A 2.4kw array generating 8.9kwh daily on a regular basis is normal and expected.

To be clear I am a fan of oversizing PV arrays if the CC supports it - I just wanted him to clarify things so that no one was inadvertently misled.

Again it is not impossible that a 1.6kw PV array generates 8.9kwh daily under optimal weather and load and battery DoD conditions but I don't expect it as a daily occurence here in Lagos given the vagaries of our weather.

I am happy that you have put this matter in a whole new perspective and it makes perfect sense to me.
Jst one simple question that was asked(size of array), everyone is debating wit long post, I dnt undastand u ppl undecided and y wud it b difficult for sum1 to say he X number of panels. undecided

Just finally moved to my own modest house. Decided to finally take a chill pill on the race for the higher wattage and settle for efficiency on the consumption side. This allowed me to set aside some funds for putting a roof over my head all glory be to God. My 1.84kw panel is all the electricity I need for now. I will connect to the grid once am done with some finishing touches to the house.. I generate enough to provide me 24 hours electricity that meets every basic needs refrigeration, laundry, light, TV, kitchen stuff.

The house runs on LED spot lights the highest being the single 12w kitchen lights. Over night amps draw before sun rise is 75AH from a 24v 200ah battery. I had time regig my setup.. Power drill was a life saver.
congrats,nice setup too

Hello here.

Ideas are needed on the preference for battery set up for an inverter meant to power a 195litres thermocool deep freezer (I honestly can't figure out the wattage consumption). A 12volt setup or 24volt set up?

Personally and from a non-professional viewpoint and understanding, I will prefer a 12volt set up to avoid the problems of having to replace both batteries even when it is one of the batteries that go bad. A 12volt, higher amperage set up will definitely last longer but with lower financial implications when the battery bank needs to be replaced since you will only have to deal with one battery set in parallel rather than in series.

Also what is the minimum inverter capacity that you will recommend? I have spares of pure sine wave 1000va and 750va lying around. Will any of these suffice?

Professional opinions please.
Thank you.
Ur 1kva shud power it conveniently, for the battery, u need to calculate the number of hours you intend running the fridge, then size ur pv and battery with your calculation. U should be fine

What is he really inspecting. If his power ministry is working, the owner wouldn't have chosen to rely on solar. Soon he'd encourage Nigerians to go for solar or continue relying on power generating set.
Solar power have notin to do with any country's power supply being effective or nt. In advanced countries, they combine diff source of power such as nuclear power, hydro, gas, solar etc. To achieve that stable power supply we all have been yearning to get.

NiyiOmoIyunade:
If you use the standard solar mount or the much cheaper but very reliable 'aluminium roof rails' such as myself or Zeestone improvised, I can assure you that there would be no heat related losses generated - the aluminium roof rails clear about 2 inches off the roof and underneath them is pretty cool because the panels would be reflecting heat off their surface. They also mount very conveniently using the standard solar roof brackets, clamps e.t.c

This is not a marketing pitch mind as they can easily be sourced off the open market at a good price - just something to consider that may be of help.

I am not a fan of mixing different panel brands except you know for sure they are nearly identical in rating, behaviour and performance - I always feel one brand would adjust voltage and amps output under load differently than the other and the least performing panel would become the limiting factor for the entire system.

See pictures of the kind of roof rails I had in mind attached.
U can call dat zeeni Roof mount grin version 2.0 loading, by d way lemme patent version 1.0 1st grin

NiyiOmoIyunade:
Dear friends,

Please celebrate with me!!!

The good sunny days are coming back again grin I got home early today and checked out my system performance only to see 76Amps NET flowing into my batteries. I could not contain my joy and so I whipped out my camera and started taking pictures to show the house.

Glossary:

Pic 1 - Net amps flow into batteries after deducting house loads and inverter self consumption - 76Amps

Pic 2 - MorningStar CC1 connected to 3.6Kw of Flames Panels (300w x 12 Units) - 47.7Amps

Pic 3 - MorningStar CC2 connected to 2.97kw of Canadian Solar Panels (330w x 9 Units) - 45.9Amps

This for me is stellar performance for a 6.6Kw West-facing PV Array.

And more interesting even to be able to benchmark the performance of Tier 2 Flames 300w vs. Tier 1 Canadian Solar 330w using exactly the same 2units of MorningStar MPPT 60A connected to the same 48v 800Ah battery bank. I will leave the house to discuss this aspect of the price vs. performance (value for money) equation.

NB: The Flames are now about 2 years old while the Canadian Solar are just very recently installed.

Credits to MorningStar Corporation who make these wonderful CCs, Zeestone99 and crew for the installation and JUO who showed me without charge some undocumented performance tweaks that allowed me to squeeze max wattage out of this mid-sized PV array as well as Gennex Tech for supply of Canadian Solar Panels at a bargain price
Don't 4get to give review of ur balancer, i measured his ba3s dis morning and all Ba3s were of same voltage with diff of 0.01,wch is quite impressive.I tink the balancers works better than the desulphator, anyway we await anoda review from one of our forum member here.
