The Rumuolumeni Police Division in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has arrested and detained the General Overseer of Agape Baptist Church, Pastor Oprite Amakiri. Amakiri was accused of raping an 18-year-old. The 50-year-old pastor was said to have told about 200 members of his church that he had been battling waste pain for the past two years and stressed that God told him that a girl between the age of 12 and 18 years old would be needed to massage his waste for him to be healed. Sadly, members of the church did not see anything wrong in the randy pastor’s ‘prophecy’ and one of them, the elder sister to the victim (names withheld) decided to make available her 18-year-old sister for the massage job. The pastor (Amakiri) decided to visit the home of his victim’s sister to get massaged while the owner of the house (victim’s sister), who is a roadside trader, had gone to do her business. It was learnt that the pastor raped the girl on three occasions and threatened to deal with her if she dared expose his deeds to anyone, including her elder sister. The young girl who was no longer comfortable with the man’s sexual demand fled the room. Angered by the girl’s effrontery, the randy pastor put a call across to the elder sister of the victim and told her that the 18-year-old girl was trying to stop ‘God’s prophecy’, an action that forced the naive victim’s sister to abandon her wares and rushed home with dissatisfaction. On getting to her house, the rape victim told her sister how she had been defiled on four occasions by the pastor. It was at that point that the trader raised the alarm and Pastor Amakiri was arrested. Speaking with newsmen, the randy pastor confessed to the crime and said nobody should blame it on the devil and that he (Amakiri) should take the blame because he actually planned and executed the rape of the teenager. “The elder sister to the girl I raped is a choir member of my church. It was after choir practice one Thursday that I informed the sister that I would like to visit her house for a serious discussion and she obliged me. “The following day, I paid her the visit and requested that she allow her younger sister (his victim), to massage my waist, that I had been having ache on it in the past two years and every treatment, drugs and injection had failed. “She then went and discussed with the younger sister, who accepted to help me. So, we had the first massage treatment that day while the elder sister was around and nothing happened between me and the little girl. “On Saturday, I called her to inform her that I was coming back for the treatment, I got there while she was about to leave for choir practice in the church. While the massage was going on, I had the (sexual) urge. So, I had carnal knowledge of the girl. I have successfully raped her three times,” Amakiri, whose church is located in Rumuolumeni, added. “It was the fourth time that she (victim) locked the gates against me. So, I had to call her sister on her cell phone and she rushed to the house from her shop and began to interrogate the girl on why she did not want to massage my waist again and she disclosed what has been happening between us. “I sincerely regret my actions. It is like the ground should open up and swallow me. Don’t blame the devil for what has happened, blame me because I was tempted and I did it,” he added. The victim, who simply gave her name as Goodness, told newsmen that she never knew the pastor that was respected so much by members of his church could think of having sexual intercourse with her. “I was in the house when the pastor came and asked me to massage his waist. On the first day, I massaged him, nothing happened between us. But on the second day, while I was massaging him, he began to touch my breast and raped me. “I tried to escape, but he held me and warned me never to tell anybody what he did to me. He has raped me three times,” the victim said, adding that she used vegetable oil to massage the pastor’s waist. Speaking on the matter, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said the randy pastor had confessed to raping the girl on several occasions, adding that Amakiri would be charged to court at the end of an ongoing investigation into the matter. lalasticlala dailypost.ng/2016/02/13/randy-general-overseer-rapes-18-year-girl-in-rivers-says-he-needed-holy-massage/

Governor Rochas Okorocha quickly reached a truce with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday as workers shut down Imo State. The Governor in a swift action, recalled all suspended workers. The governor directed the workers sacked from the 19 parastatals to immediately return back to work. His action ended the strike embarked upon by the civil servants. NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, read the resolutions reached between the two parties, where the over 3,000 workers suspended last month without pay, were reinstated. He said that the Committee on Joint Government/Labour Negotiation in Imo State resolved thus: “The immediate recall of all suspended workers of Imo State, notwithstanding that the parastatals in the opinion of government should be more productive. “That the gross revenue of government from all sources will henceforth be verified every month by the joint committee. “That government will retain and run all its affairs with not more than 30 percent of the verified revenue for the month, while the committee will apply the balance of 70 percent in the settlement of salaries of public servants and pensioners.” The agreements further reads: “Negotiations will continue with a view to fully accessing the wage bill of every ministry, department, and agency, and to determine the funding modalities of parastatals within the agreed percentage sharing framework. “Quarterly, the critical areas shall be reviewed, and ensure compliance and all revenue subheads for the month shall be fully disclosed by the office of the Accountant-General to the select committee of labour. “And that no public servant will be victimised in any way as a result of the actions leading up to the dispute and resolutions.” Before the deal was reached, members of the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had brought Owerri to a standstill to press home their demands. They locked the Owerri Airport, forced banks to close, and poured invectives on Governor Okorocha for suspending the workers. Wabba and the State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Austin Chilakpu and hundreds of workers clad in red and black attires, with their NLC flags, grounded Owerri for hours with no vehicular movement. All economic and social activities were also brought to a halt. Others in attendance were labour chairmen and leaders from the other 35 states of the federation. In their position paper distributed to newsmen tagged “Our Grouse With Okorocha” by the NLC and TUC, the workers said inflation in Nigeria is currently at double digits, making cost of living expensive, resulting in basic amenities going beyond the reach of the poor, saying employment is threatening the peace and development of the country, while those currently employed are barely managing to make ends meet. The agreement was signed by Emeh Ikenna, Special Adviser (Technical) to the Governor, Princess Alma Eluwa, Solicitor-General of Imo State, Eze Samuel Ohiri, Chairman Imo Council of Traditional Rulers, Bishop Stanford Nwaogu, Chairman, Imo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Austin Chilakpu, Imo NLC Chairman and Imo NLC Secretary, Ken Onwuemodo. lalasticlala www.thebreakingtimes.com/okorocha-bows-to-nlc-pressure-recalls-all-suspended-workers/ |

Doctors in Imo State have declared a three-day closure of all public and private hospitals in the state to protest their ill-treatment by the police and the Rochas Okorocha administration. Last week, the doctors and the police clashed in Owerri, the state capital, during a protest against the management of public hospitals and poor treatment of health workers by the state government. During the incident, some doctors were reported shot by the police. The directive to shut down all the hospitals in Imo was given on Tuesday by the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). The association said that the closure of the hospitals was to express their grievances against the action of the police and the concessioning of public hospitals by Okorocha. In a press statement issued by NMA Chairman, Dr Hyacinth Emele and Secretary, Kyrian Duruewuru, the association condemned the action of the police, insisting that the police acted the script of some government officials by shooting its members on a peaceful protest. Emele said that contrary to the police claim that NMA never obtained permission for the protest, it was monitored by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bisong and Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of New Owerri, Eric Uchegbu, who came with six vans loaded with armed policemen, escorting the protesters. He noted that the police vans which have been escorting them, at the Ware House roundabout, turned against the doctors, diverting them to end their protest at the Freedom Square and not the Government House as contained in their permit. At that point, Emele said the police, who were hitherto friendly, threw teargas at them and shot some of his members with live bullets. The NMA said it was shocked by the utterances of the Commissioner for Health, Ngozi Njoku, who it said was rejected by the association because she was not a member of the profession. www.thebreakingtimes.com/police-brutality-doctors-shut-down-all-hospitals-in-imo-state/ |

University College London researchers have discovered the recipe for painlessness. According to a report on the UCL website, people born with a non-functioning Nav1.7 do not feel pain. Sodium channel Nav1.7 is particularly important for signalling in pain pathways. Interestingly, drugs that block Nav1.7 have since been developed but they had disappointingly weak effects. The new study, published in Nature Communications , reveals that mice and people who lack Nav1.7 also produce higher than normal levels of natural opioid peptides. To examine if opioids were important for painlessness, the researchers gave naloxone, an opioid blocker, to mice lacking Nav1.7 and found that they started to feel pain. They then gave naloxone to a 39-year-old woman with the rare mutation and she felt pain for the first time in her life, the report has said. A senior author, Professor John Wood of UCL Medicine, was pleased that after several years of trying to develop drugs that would combat pain, the secrete ingredient had finally been found. He said, “After a decade of rather disappointing drug trials, we now have confirmation that Nav1.7 really is a key element in human pain. “The secret ingredient turned out to be good old-fashioned opioid peptides, and we have now filed a patent for combining low dose opioids with Nav1.7 blockers. “This should replicate the painlessness experienced by people with rare mutations, and we have already successfully tested this approach in unmodified mice.” Broad-spectrum sodium channel blockers are used as local anaesthetics, but they are not suitable for long-term pain management as they cause complete numbness and can have serious side-effects over time. By contrast, people born without working Nav1.7 still feel non-painful touch normally and the only known side-effect is the inability to smell. The findings were made possible by the use of ‘transgenic’ mice, meaning they were modified to carry genetic material from another organism – in this case, the mutation that prevents humans from feeling pain. Precise physiological experiments showed that the nervous systems of the transgenic mice contained around twice the levels of naturally-produced opioids as unmodified mice from the same litter. One Essie Comfort, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly inflicting serious injuries on her 9-year-old niece, Phillips Queendaline, in the Ijesha area of the state. Comfort, a 32-year-old mother of one who hails from Ikot-Ekpene in Akwa Ibom State, allegedly inflicted injuries on the 9-year-old when she ate out of a plate of soup which the woman had reportedly kept in the house. Her arrest on Monday, came after the incident, which occurred on Thursday, January 14, 2016, was reported at the FESTAC Police Division. The class teacher of Queendaline, who is in Primary 1 in a community school, had noticed that the girl was quiet and complained of pains in the class. The teacher reportedly inquired from the girl, and she explained that her buttocks had peeled from the alleged torture from her aunt. Thereafter, the unnamed teacher reported the matter to the school authorities, which in turns informed the police, and Comfort was arrested. The victim, according to The Punch, is being given medical treatment by officials of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation who following the incident, provided a temporary shelter for her. The accused who worked as a nanny, said she asked Queendaline five times if she ate out of the Afam soup brought by her neighbour, and the girl insisted that she did not, which infuriated her. “Queendaline is the daughter of my elder brother. I brought her to help me because I have a small boy. On Wednesday, a neighbour in my estate in Ijesha gave me Afam soup. It is not everyone who gives me food that I collect and eat. “I moved into the house in September 2015 and I had been very careful. The woman made an Afam soup and she was a friend actually. But Queen, my boy and I just finished eating around 5pm and I was taking my son out when the woman brought the soup. “I was going to take him to the barber’s. So, I asked Queen to bring a plate so we could keep the soup. I did not want to collect it, but for the insistence of the woman. When I returned, the girl was asleep and everyone had gone to bed. “In the morning, I wanted to throw the soup away. That was when I found out the soup had been partly eaten. When I confronted Queen, she denied eating the soup. The girl lies a lot. If she had told me the truth, I would not beat her. I asked her the question five times. She denied. I knew my son’s hands could not reach the table where she put the soup. I did not beat her because I hated her. “Who asked her to eat the soup without permission? If that soup contained poison and she died after eating it, I would still go to jail for it. So I angrily took a club used for stirring amala, and I beat her bum bum. She was wearing a wrapper. When the wrapper fell off, I continued beating her bum bum. But I meant good for her. She will get married some day,” Comfort added. Meanwhile, the victim, on her part, said she did not eat from the soup, but she was battered because she failed to clean the room. She said, “When my aunty was going out, she gave me money to buy water and clean the house. But I did not see water to buy. When she came back, she started to beat me up.” The victim added that her aunt shunned residents who came to her rescue, saying, “She did not answer them. I did not eat from the soup. It was kept where she asked me to keep it,” the 9-year-old sobbed. lalasticlala dailypost.ng/2016/02/02/woman-inflicts-injuries-on-9-year-old-niece-for-eating-without-permission/ |
