PoliticsAluu 4: Trial Judge Hands Off Case by zizman(op): 9:55am On Apr 27, 2013
The ongoing trial of the alleged killers of
four students of University of Port
Harcourt, Choba, on October 5, 2012,
which happened in Aluu community near the
institution, suffered a setback yesterday
after the High Court Judge, Justice T. S.
Oji, withdrew from the case.
Her decision to return the case file to the
chief judge was sequel to the observation she
made that the third accused person, Ikechukwu
Louis Amadi, out of the 11 accused persons, did
not have a lawyer to defend him.
The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr. I.
Otorubio, who led the state's team for
prosecution announced their appearance in the
matter but no legal representation for the
accused. The judge who was not happy with the
development said she would rather return the
case to the chief judge than try it because she
would not take side in the matter.
"It is safer to send the matter back to the
chief judge for re-assignment than favour any
party in this matter," she said. The trial judge
said her hands were tied in the case because
she had close relationship with the two parties
(accused persons and victims) in the matter.
The victims are Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku
Mike, Tekenah Elkanah and Chiadika Biringa.
The accused were Lawal Segun, Ex-Sergeant
Lucky Orji, Ikechukwu Louis Amadi, David
Chinasa Ogbada, Abiodun Yusuf, Joshua Ekpe,
Abang Cyril, Alhaji Hassan Welewa, Okoghiroh
Endurance, Ozioma Abajuo and Chigozie Evans
Samuel. "The accused persons, I know them.
The victims I know. My hands are tied in this
matter. I am sitting between the devil and deep
sea," she stated, saying her decision to return
the case to the chief judge was not because she
lacked the competence to handle it but because
of the sensitive nature of the case.
Justice Oji pointed out that the case had
received widespread publicity and had
attracted much attention, adding that the
image of the judiciary should be protected. "It
is a matter of widespread publication.
The judiciary wants to maintain its image. It is
not a matter of incompetence but because of
its sensitive nature." She expressed confidence
in the Rivers State judiciary to try every case,
stressing that the vital point in the Aluu case
was not that justice was done but it must be
seen.
"I will not satisfy anybody. Justice must not
only be done, it must be seen to have been done.
The Rivers State judiciary has very capable
hands to try all matters." However, the case
had been at the Port Harcourt Magistrate
Court but due to the fact that it lacked
jurisdiction to try the matter, the case was
transferred to the High Court, which
commenced yesterday.

Kill 1 American. The whole police, FBI, Military,
Marines, Dogs, Security Camera + Robots will
track u...
Kill 1 Million Nigerians. You will be granted
amnesty.
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
"We refused to be terrorized. We will find you
and bring you to justice" ~ President Barack
Obama of the United States of America.
"Terrorism is a global phenomenon, we must
learn to live with it. Who is Boko Haram please
show yourselves". ~ President Goodluck
Jonathan of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Buh we can't compare d two countries...here are 7 scenario why. Scenario 1.
US: Days after Pres. Obama said they don't
know who did it but will find them and ask them
why, 2 suspects identified, 1 captured and 1 in
custody.
Nig: Years after Pres. Jonathan said "we know
the culprits and we will bring some of them to
justice" only 1 culprit was brought to justice -
by the SA government, and it turns out he isn't
one of the known culprits GEJ was talking about.
Scenario 2.
USA: The town was locked - people told to stay
at home, offices, shops and schools closed -
because 1 man (the terrorist) had come to town.
Nig: Maiduguri was locked down because 1 man
(the president) had come to town.
Scenario 3.
USA: The "Joint task force" (of the FBI,
SWAT, and Boston Police) conducted a house-
to-house search without destroying a single
property or hurting an innocent man.
Nig: The JTF conduct house-to-house search
and destroy homes, and kill occupants in the
house.
Scenario 4.
USA: A bomb goes off, residents go to the
rescue and security forces arrive to secure the
area and ensure there is no other imminent
threat.
Nig: A bomb goes off, everyone scatter scatter,
JTF arrive to shoot sporadically and kill
everyone in sight.
Scenario 5.
USA: Footage from surveillance cameras is used
to identify the terrorists and to track them
down by security and intelligence networks
Nig: Footage from the terrorists is used to
confirm the identity of the terrorist with
prayer by government and security forces for
God to track them down.
Scenario 6.
USA: Security forces asks residents for
support to help them in doing their job.
Nig: Security forces tell residents that it is
their (the residents) duty to track down the
terrorists.
Scenario 7.
USA: Armed terrorists wounded in an exchange
of fire are sent to hospital for treatment so
they can be fit enough to face a trial.
Nig: Unarmed suspects are killed.
PoliticsHell Fire Survivor by zizman(op): 2:11pm On Apr 21, 2013
Two weeks ago, many families mourned,
following the death of no fewer than 80
people, including 57 passengers of a
commercial luxury bus, which collided with a
fuel tanker in Ugbogui, on the Benin-Lagos
expressway and burst into flames
The victims were burnt beyond
recognition and were given mass burial
last week. However, today the family of
Kenneth Chinedu Nwaokoro, a 24-year-old final
year student of Information Technology of
Caritas University, Enugu, who survived the
accident, is rejoicing.
This lucky young man, from Imo State, was
returning to Enugu to complete his final year
project, after visiting his brother in Lagos. He
is currently on admission at the Orthopaedic
Hospital, Enugu. Narrating what happened and
how he survived, Nwaokoro told Saturday Sun:
"When we left the park to embark on the
journey, our bus was half filled; so the driver
picked passengers along the road until the bus
was filled, except for the seat beside me, which
I did not allow anybody to occupy.
The excuse I gave was that somebody was
sitting there beside because I didn't want
disturbance and more so it was illegal for them
to pick passengers along the road. The journey
was smooth, so I slept off. "I was sleeping when
the accident happened. It was the sound of the
collision that woke me up. I woke up to see the
driver struggling with the steering to
manoeuvre the bus, but everywhere was already
on fire immediately the bus collided with the
tanker and there was commotion."
The struggle to escape On how the passengers
struggled to escape from impending death,
Nwaokoro said: "People where shouting and
running towards the entrance, but the door was
locked. The bus was one of The Young's new
buses. There was fire everywhere and people
were getting burnt. At first, I was confused,
but I convinced myself that I would survive. I
opened the window and jumped out.
The fire burnt my back and face. On landing, I
ran straight to a local hospital close to the
scene of the accident, where I had to part with
N2, 000 before they gave me first aid. I then
contacted my younger brother, who came and
took me to Enugu." Asked if there were other
passengers who escaped through the window
with him, he said: "I noticed that a guy jumped
after me, but he was seriously burnt.
I couldn't wait to check him because I was
burnt too and my hands were fractured." How
he bought the bus ticket Nwaokoro revealed
that his name was not on the manifest of the
bus because his younger sister bought the
ticket for him. According to him, the sister's
name was written on the manifest (seat 23)
because when it was her turn to pay for the
ticket, the official of the transport company
asked for her name and quickly wrote it on the
ticket before verifying if she was the one
travelling.
He revealed that when the ticket officer
realised the mistake, she said that since she
had written the name on the ticket, there was
nothing she could do. The only remedy offered
was to enter Nwaokoro's phone number against
his sister's name, while his sister's phone
number was entered as next of kin.
Sister corroborates his story The lucky
passenger's younger sister, Catherine
Onyinyechi Nwaokoro, said: "I went to the bus
centre with him and I bought the ticket. The
cashier presumed I was the one travelling and
issued the ticket in my name. When I saw the
mistake, I called her attention to it and she
said it was late as she could not alter the
ticket. She said that since the passenger was
my brother he could make use of the ticket.
That was why she wrote his phone number on
the passenger's list and my own as the next of
kin." No visit from the transport company When
asked if anybody from the transport company
The Young, had visited him, Nwaokoro said
nobody had. His elder brother, Emmanuel
Nwaokoro, told Saturday Sun that he visited
the company's branch office at Jibowu, Lagos,
where his brother boarded the bus and he was
referred to Maza Maza, in Lagos, where the
company's head office is located.
At the head office, the elder Nwaokoro said
when he told the manager that his younger
brother survived the accident, he expressed
surprise, saying they did not know anybody
survived. "When I told the manager about my
brother's survival, he said they didn't know
that somebody survived it. He told us to come
back in a week or two weeks' time to fill
insurance form and other relevant documents
for compensation."

PoliticsBoston Explosion: 8-yr-old Victim Diedwaiting To Watch Dad Cross Finish Line by zizman(op): 3:16pm On Apr 17, 2013
Eight-year-old Martin Richard was killed by
the first of the explosions that rocked the
finish line of the Boston Marathon.
He had been there waiting to watch his father
Bill cross the line: a rite of passage for scores
of Boston youngsters living in the city that
hosts one of the world's oldest races.
According to the Boston Globe, Martin was
very nearly saved from the blast after running
out to hug his father, but his father kept on
going and Martin returned to his mother. As Mr
Richard carried on, his son, six-year-old
daughter and wife were hit by the first of the
blasts that came just 10 seconds and 90m
apart. Martin was one of three killed by the
twin blasts.
His sister Jane has reportedly lost a leg and his
mother Denise is understood to have undergone
surgery for a serious head injury. They were
among the 170 who were injured in the attack.
His older brother, 12-year-old Henry, is not
thought to have been hurt in the explosion.
According to neighbours, Mr Richard, who runs
an environmental testing company, returned to
his home in the Dorchester suburb of Boston
this morning still in hospital scrubs.

Monguno Local Government Area of Borno
State is about putting behind it the recent
killing of six secondary school teachers,
including a principal, the local government
was again plunged into mourning as many
students were, on Saturday, murdered in
cold blood by some gunmen suspected to be
members of the Jama'atul Ahlis Sunnah Lid'
Awati, also known as Boko Haram.
Sunday Tribune learnt that the
gunmen killed many students of
Monguno Secondary School by slitting
their throats, after laying an ambush for them
as they returned home from centres where they
wrote the West African Examination Council
(WAEC) Senior Secondary Certificate
Examination (SSCE).
Monguno is 135 kilometres North of Maiduguri,
the state capital; and it is considered to be an
epicentre of activities of the Islamist sect.
The gunmen, according to a villager, Mallam
Aisami, ambushed the candidates on their way
home on foot and bicycles. He added that the
assailants tied the students' hands together at
their backs and slit their throats on the foot
paths leading to the school premises in the
afternoon.
He said when the dastardly deed had been
done, the gunmen fled on three motorcycles
towards Marte Local Government Area of
Northern Borno before men of the Joint Task
Force (JTF) rushed to the scene three hours
after the students were already slewn.
Spokesman of JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir
Musa, and the Borno State Commissioner for
Education, Alhaji Musa Inuwa Kubo, confirmed
the incident on Saturday.
They stated that it was a very "unfortunate
and frightening incident," decrying all that had
been happening in the state.
Sagir and Kubo could, however, not ascertain
the exact number of students allegedly killed
by the suspects at Monguno.
Kubo, in a telephone interview, told journalists
that; "I am calling on the people of Borno State
to continue to pray and fast so that the
incessant attacks and killings in the state
cease peace and unity are restored.
HealthHilary Koprowski Polio Vaccine Inventor, Diesat 96 by zizman(op): 2:26pm On Apr 14, 2013
Dr. Hilary Koprowski, a pioneering virologist
who developed the first successful oral
vaccination for polio, died this week at his
suburban Philadelphia home. He was 96.
Although not as well-known as
fellow researchers Jonas
Salk and Albert Sabin, Koprowski's 1950
clinical trial was the first to show it was
possible to vaccinate against polio, the crippling
and sometimes fatal disease that's now all but
eradicated.
Koprowski's son, Christopher, said Saturday his
father liked the scientific recognition his work
received without the celebrity of Salk and
Sabin.
"He enjoyed not having his scientific work
disrupted," said Christopher Koprowski, chief
of radiation oncology at Christiana Care Health
System in Wilmington, Del. "Not that he was a
modest individual, mind you."
Christopher Koprowski said his father had been
sick for several months before dying Thursday
in the same Wynnewood home he'd lived in since
1957.
Hilary Koprowski self-administered the live-
virus oral vaccine he developed before the 1950
trial - about two years before Salk's injectable
version using a dead form of the virus began
testing with the backing of the National
Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now the
March of Dimes.
Sabin, who Koprowski's son said sometimes
collaborated with his father, was the first to
get the more-effective oral version, which
didn't require boosters, licensed for use in the
U.S.
Koprowski went on to be the director of The
Wistar Institute in Philadelphia from 1957 to
1991. Under his leadership, the independent
research institution developed a rubella vaccine
that helped eradicate the disease in much of
the world, Wistar officials said. It was during
that time the institute also developed a more
effective rabies vaccine.
A talented musician, the Polish-born Koprowski
was a penniless immigrant in Rio de Janeiro
making money teaching piano before hooking up
with a lab there and eventually moving to the
United States, his son said.

The Muslim umbrella body in Nigeria,
Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has expressed
dissatisfaction with Boko Haram's rejection
of the proposed amnesty by the federal
government.
In a statement by its scribe, Dr. Khalid Ahmed
Aliyu, JNI criticized the Christian Association
of Nigeria (CAN) for its resistance of the
policy, asserting that Boko Haram sect has
killed more Muslims that Christians.
JNI said it was perplexed that while the call by
the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of
JNI to grant amnesty to Boko Haram has
received the strong support of some prominent
Christians, the President of CAN, Pastor Ayo
Oritsejfor and others were confusing the
country's leadership on the way out of
Nigeria's security challenges.
"Our concern is what is the motive behind the
total rejection of amnesty by them?" the
statement asked. "Do they benefit from the
quagmire of the Boko Haram? When where they
appointed Special Advisers to the President on
the Perpeturation of Insecurity? However, if
leaders' utterances cannot ventilate the
atmosphere for peace at a time when peace is
most needed what else will guarantee peace?
The unfortunate menace of Boko Haram
insurgency in Nigeria is indeed an accident
beyond religion which affects every Nigerian
directly or indirectly and upon which no passing
of bulk can be logical."
Arguing that the menace of Boko Haram has
affected more Muslims than non-Muslims, JNI
described Islam as a glass house from which no
true Muslim should throw stones, and that it
stands by the teachings of Islam which cautions
against making provoking statements in times
of anger because it only leads to regret.
It therefore appealed to the Federal
Government to proceed with its plans for
amnesty as "a potent way of restoring peace to
Nigeria without minding any distractive
tendencies of some conservative elements" who
may have a selfish agenda.
"Consequently, as always JNI uses this medium
to call on the Federal Government to do away
with all the vituperations of the CAN President
and his cohorts by swinging into action
undeterred over the issue of granting amnesty,
with all stakeholders involved carried along
such that peace and prosperity will return to
Nigeria. In the same vein, Muslims must not be
oblivious of the significance of prayers,
therefore Muslims are called upon to fervently
pray to Allah, the Most High for the
harmonious existence of Nigeria. Meanwhile, we
seize this opportunity to remind all Nigerian
Muslims of resisting any provoking temptation."
It is unclear if JNI, at the time of this
statement, actually knew that Boko Haram has
itself denounced the amnesty initiative, as JNI
did not criticize the violent group about its
rejection.
In a broadcast quoted by AFP on Thursday, the
group's leader, Abubakar Shekau said it was
the government, not Boko Haram, which needs a
pardon from his group, which he said has done
no wrong.
CelebritiesReason I’ve Refused To Support My Son —daddy Showkey by zizman(op): 10:24am On Apr 14, 2013
The Ajegunle music star, who will be having
his recent first major performance in Abuja
at the Tyme Out with Tee-A Live Edition
Concert, in an interview with MERCY
MICHAEL, opened up on sundry issues: His
disappearance from the music scene, career
and his son's, Ramond, music dream. The
Delta State-born act also speaks on the
Delta flood of October 2012.
You've been scarce on the music
scene lately. What brings you here
today?
As you can see, we artistes are gathered
together to deliberate on how we can help the
flood victims in Delta State. Like my place
Isoko in general is affected. I'm from Delta
State. And you see, sometimes we ignore things.
If when things become a problem that's when
we start coming together.
But why I'm happy that we are even coming
together is the fact that beyond talking we are
actually working out modalities on how we can
help these displaced people. We as artistes, we
need to learn how to use our star power to help
the society and that's what we are doing.
What has been happening to you?
I've been going through some things in recent
time but I thank God I've overcome them. Some
people were after my life to kill me. I could not
go on stage to perform because of the fear of
being shot. But I thank God that God has taken
control of that. Who are they and why are they
after your life? It's a long story.
Besides, I'm not a policeman. I can't pinpoint
that this is where it is coming from but
investigation is still ongoing. It all started in
2011 when two persons suspected to be hired
assassins shot at me twice at close range
before escaping on a motorcycle. I was on a
queue to buy fuel at the Mobil petrol station
along Agindigbi Road, Ikeja, when the incident
happened. A guy tapped on the window of my
Range Rover SUV. Thinking he was one of my
fans, I wound down the glass to attend to him.
He told me that I had a flat tyre.
And as soon as I alighted from the car, the
young' man pulled a gun and shot at me twice.
He muttered: "No be you be this Daddy
Showkey? Immediately his first shot missed
me, I quickly grabbed him. As I wrestled him to
the ground with the hope of retrieving the gun,
a second person who was already poised to
escape on his motorcycle released another
bullet, this time he aimed at my head.
Fortunately, he missed the mark; it was
Providence that saved me from the assassins'
bullets.
Sensing that the crowd that had dispersed at
the blast of the first gunshot would rally
support for me, the two guys quickly scampered
away on their motorcycle. Also twice last year,
suspected assassins stormed my Ojodu
residence. The first time they came, they
succeeded in killing a close associate of mine,
but their second attempt was repelled by the
combined efforts of the local vigilante and men
of the Nigeria Police. The matter has since been
reported to the police. So, really for a long
time now, you can see I've not been in
circulation but I had to come out for this
purpose because it touches me a lot to see
people being displaced, stranded and nowhere
to lay their heads.
They are poor people and now they are
homeless. Some of them that have farms, their
farms are gone. Their livelihood is gone. So
that's why we are coming together to see what
we can do and that's why I came out of my
shell.
So, all the while that you were missing on
the music scene, what were you doing?
Business, but it's not something I want to talk
about.
So, musically, what is the next thing for
you?
Just watch and see because right now I cannot
tell you that this is what is coming, but just
watch and see.
Are you working on any album at the
moment?
Yes, right now I'm working on a single, and
immediately I'm done with that an album will
follow.
Your son, Raymond, 15 years, I learnt, is
showing interest in music but that he does
not have your support. Why?
You see, first of all, he should concentrate on
his education because let me tell you even
though you want to became a musician,
education is the first thing.
When I was little, I knew what my mother went
through to get me to concentrate on my
education but I was stubborn; I allowed music
to take me away from education. Although I
succeeded, but education-wise I know how it
has affected me. That is why I made it as a
mandate, if you want to do music, first of all
concentrate on education because music is a
powerful spirit, it might take him away from his
education. Entertainment in general is a
powerful spirit. Like me, I started
entertainment when I was small but I will get
my son not to make my mistake.
That is the reason. Do you think your level
of education is affecting your career?
I can read and write but sometimes I feel that
I should have been in this position or that
position. But one thing that people don't know
also about education is that education is life;
what you experience every day. I'm more
educated than so many people that are
graduates. But what I want for my son to
understand is that there is time for everything.
When I was small, I used to play truancy. I
would run out of school and go and do music.
My mother would come there to beat me.
I don't want my son to go through all those
things. You see music is a gift. I put it to you
that I can decide not to release an album in 10
years, the day I will release one, dem no go tell
una now because it is a gift. I did not learn it.
Entertainment generally is not what you learn
per se; it is a gift. But education is what you
learn. So there is time for everything and
that's what I want my son to know. There is
time to be a child and there is time to grow up
and be a man. And there is time of music and
there's time for education. If I allow him right
now he will lose focus. Right now, he sings in
church; that, I am okay with but I make sure
education is his priority for now and I will
guide him to the maximum.
But your wife has been a great support to
him. Does she see it differently?
Ehnnnn, my wife has been a great support to me
too musically (laughs). She's the mother of the
house; she knows what's good for everyone but
I've told her too that she should give her
support with wisdom because I know what I
want for my son. When the time comes he will
do music. I'm not against his dream of
becoming a musician but for now education
comes first and so he should concentrate
hundred percent on education.
Your genre of music has not been growing.
What are you doing to sustain the brand?
You see music is about style. Sometimes style
changes, so you have to learn to adapt to the
way it's changing. I started music from
comedy, entertaining people in my
neighbourhood. And my song, when I started, I
was trying to differentiate the mainstream
reggae music from what I do. I can sing, I can
rap but I decided to build something my people
can identify with. So I came up with singing in
broken English. But to your question, there are
people that emulate you; if they cannot meet up
with what you are doing they are bound to
leave. But Ajegunle music cannot fade away
because it's music from the street.
As a pioneer of Ajegunle music, do you think
you have been encouraging artistes who do
that style of music enough?
Yes, people look up to me. But truth is I have
had my issues too for sometime but I thank
God those issues are being taken care of. A lot
will be coming out from Ajegunle soon. Don't
worry, just watch out. Are you going to ever cut
your dreadlock? Don't ask me that one. I no fit
tire for dis dreadlocks. The dreadlocks is my
image and I don't want to cut it.
You are so big now. What have you been
doing to yourself? Na so you be before?
First of all I used to be muscle, but now I have
a lot on my head. But before I drop my next
album I will work it out. Are you having any
collaboration on your forth-coming album?
Everything about my forth-coming album I have
decided to keep close to my heart. You were
among the artistes that campaigned for
President Jonathan.
At the last rally in Ojota you said you
regretted campaigning for him; how would
you balance that?
First of all a president is elected by the people.
Sometimes, your decisions might not favour the
people but I stand on the side of the people
when it comes to that subsidy removal.
Sometimes, the problem we have in our country
is that when we want to take decision we don't
consider people's plight. We go ahead and take
decision without debating it.
That time they did what was wrong. I have no
regret campaigning for Jonathan. I would be
honest with you but I have a right to my feeling.
If I feel the decision that they are taking is
wrong I have the right to come and say it. And
that is why I made that statement because if
people that elected you into office say they
don't want something, first of all, you consider
their feelings then come back and now let them
know the reason why it has to be the way you
have suggested it.
Trust me, Nigerians will tell you to go ahead,
then you will do it. So why would I not say I
regretted campaigning for him when the people
that elected you have pains in them and you
damned them.
Politics20 Women Raped, Police Van Burnt Ashoodlums Invade Town In Delta by zizman(op): 2:33pm On Apr 13, 2013
There is apprehension in Agbarha-Otor
kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government
Area of Delta State following a reign of
terror unleashed on the people by hoodlums
in the last few days.
The Area Commander, Ughelli, Assistant
Commissioner of Police, ACP, Awosola Awotinde
confirmed to Saturday Vanguard that 34
persons were in police net in connection with
the orgy of violence.
It was gathered that no fewer than 20 women
and girls, including an eight-year-old daughter
of the Vicar of an Anglican church in the
community were raped by the hooligans, who
also set ablaze a police patrol vehicle.
A number of police officers were, at the
outset, sent to the palace of the monarch of
Agbarha-Otor, His Royal Majesty Richard
Oghenevwogaga, Ebelle-Okorefe I, to secure
the king's abode following a breakdown of law
and order in the community, Wednesday night,
but rampaging hoodlums overpowered them.
At press time, last night, the monarch has
relocated from the palace for safety reason,
while the Area Commander, Ughelli, has
reinforced security in the town. Saturday
Vanguard also sighted soldiers in the troubled
community.
The hooligans, numbering about 100 were angry
that the monarch refused to participate in the
traditional "Ekene" festival on grounds that he
is a Christian.
According to our source, "they wanted the king
to make sacrifice to the deity, but he refused,
saying he is a Christian and they should go
ahead without him contributing money or
cooking for them during the feast, as some of
the priests and chiefs demanded.
"His refusal to take part in the feast
infuriated the hooligans, who vowed to foment
trouble and they executed their mission on
Wednesday, the last day of the feast. The
unfortunate thing is that some chiefs even
supported their rebellion," he added.
Saturday Vanguard learnt that hoodlums
allegedly expelled from the community because
of their criminal escapades, started with the
clergyman because it was in his church that the
king held a thanksgiving service recently.
Besides raping the clergyman's eight-year-old
daughter, hospitalized because of the incident
and other girls, they also hijacked the property
of people, claiming that the deity wanted them.
A community leader said, the miscreants
engaged in raping of women (married and
single) since the festival, which is held once
every 15 years started on 27th of March. It
took a worrisome dimension Wednesday night
as they invaded the Church's vicarage,
destroyed and looted properties worth
thousands of naira after making the vicar and
his households undergo some inhuman
treatments."
According to our source, "on their way from
the vicarage, they invaded the shop of the
Queen Mother of Agbarha-Otor and raided her
shop; they stole wines and practically every
other thing in the shop and also vandalized the
freezer."
PoliticsNorthern Leaders To Meet Boko Haramleader by zizman(op): 2:27pm On Apr 13, 2013
The Federal Government's committee on
amnesty for the militant Islamic sect, Boko
Haram, plans to reach out to the leader of
the group, Sheik Ibrahim Shekau.
Saturday PUNCH's investigation showed that
in spite of the sect's rejection of the amnesty
offer by the Federal Government, the
government is still leaving the option open.
It was gathered that as part of the moves to
pursue the dialogue option, the committee,
which would soon be constituted, would consist
of respected Islamic leaders.
It was also learnt that its membership would
include some indigenes of Yobe and Borno
states, which are the operating bases of the
sect.
Investigations showed that Islamic scholars
and other prominent indigenes of the two
states would assist in reaching out to Shekau.
A top government source, who pleaded
anonymity because of the sensitivity of the
issue, said, "The Federal Government is not
discouraged by the sect's rejection of
amnesty.
"We are going to use the stick and carrot
approach. While the Joint Task Force will
continue its operations, the committee will
reach out to the sect for dialogue.
"We have started a process and we will not
abandon it. We will, however, need the
cooperation of northern leaders to appeal to
those people."
The Northern Elders' Forum had a meeting with
President Goodluck Jonathan last week and
advised the President to offer amnesty to the
sect members.
Jonathan was reported to have agreed to set
up a committee that would work out the
amnesty terms for the sect after a meeting
with security chiefs.
But the leader of the sect was quoted on
Thursday by the AFP news agency as rejecting
the offer on behalf of the group.
He was quoted as saying in a recorded audio
message in Hausa, "Surprisingly, the Nigerian
government is talking about granting amnesty.
What wrong have we done? On the contrary, it
is we that should grant you (a) pardon."
But it was gathered that in spite of the sect's
rejection of the amnesty, the government
would go ahead with its decision to set up the
committee.
It was also gathered that apart from the
Northern Elders' Forum, other northern groups
such as the Arewa Consultative Forum and the
Northern Governors' Forum are expected to
join in the peace moves.
Confirming this, a member of the NEF, Prof.
Ango Abdullahi, told one of our correspondents
that the forum was prepared to play any role
given to it in order to ensure peace.
Asked if the NEF would take up the challenge
of reaching out to Shekau, he said, "It depends
on how the committee is formulated. I think the
government is working very hard to set up this
committee, they have not finished.
"I know members of the committee will do this.
The northern elders and other groups will join
the main committee; there may be sub-
committees which will be given various roles
with the sole objective of ending the crisis.
"I don't see our group being singled out; we will
be called to make our contributions like every
other group."
Meanwhile, the Jamaatu Nasril Islam on Friday
appealed to the Federal Government not to be
distracted from its amnesty plan for the
insurgent group, Boko Haram.
Its Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, said in
Kaduna at a news briefing that the government
should ignore those bent on distracting it from
pursuing the path of peace and reconciliation.
He condemned the negative campaign launched
by the President of the Christian Association
of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, against the
amnesty plan, saying it was divisive and selfish.
"We appeal to the Federal Government to
proceed with its plans for amnesty as a potent
way of restoring peace to Nigeria without
minding any distractive tendencies," he said.
The JNI secretary general described the Boko
Haram insurgency as "an accident beyond
religion, which affects every Nigerian directly
or indirectly and upon which no passing of buck
can be logical."
He said the attack by the insurgents had killed
more Muslims than Christians and had
disrupted the livelihood of millions of others.
Aliyu listed some high profile casualties of the
insurgents as the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of
Fika, the Emir of Kano and hundreds of Muslim
clerics, adding that the CAN president's
comments were misplaced.
He appealed to well meaning Nigerians to
support the government to restore peace and
normalcy to areas affected by the insurgency.
He called on Muslims not to be provoked by the
smear campaign and to pray continuously for
peace and tranquillity in the country.

PoliticsDangote To Open $8bn Oil Refinery by zizman(op): 7:01am On Apr 13, 2013
Another chapter will this year be opened in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, when business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote kicks off his plan to establish a refinery in the country.

The federal government had, in 2011, granted approval to 19 multinationals for the setting up of private refineries in the country, but none of them has come on stream due to the regulation of the price of fuel in the country.

Though details of where the refinery will be sited and its capacity were yet to be made known, work on the refinery, which will cost $8 billion, will begin this year.

At a breakfast meeting with some senior editors to mark his 57th birthday in Lagos, Alhaji Dangote said work will start on the refinery once his company secured the final approval from the federal government.

While acknowledging the fact that only a mad businessman would consider establishing a refinery in Nigeria under the present uncertain business terrain of subsidising the downstream sector of the petroleum industry, Dangote pleaded with the government to allow market forces to determine the price of fuel to allow the private sector play a significant role in the industry.

"We are all aware that the federal government had issued 19 licences to the private sector to establish refineries in the country, but how many of them have come on stream? There is uncertainty in the sector and only a mad businessman will put up a refinery now, but we are set to do that," he said.

Alhaji Dangote urged the federal government to put in place critical infrastructure in all sectors of the economy to kick-start its rapid development.

He said that with the country's population expected to hit 200 million by 2015, there were no serious plans to take care of the huge population.

He also called on the government to diversify the economy by intensifying reforms in agriculture.
