aval pilots – Commander Murtala Daba and Lt. Adeyemi Sowole – tried in vain to land the helicopter which crashed on Saturday at Okoroba community in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.

Governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Patrick Yakowa; the former National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi, and two of their aides died alongside the two pilots.

Eyewitnesses said the pilots appeared to have sighted a space at the swampy mangrove, few metres to the  crash site, and made some efforts to land the ill-fated helicopter.

In an unclear circumstance, the helicopter was said to have attempted going up again but in the process, its blades hit one of the palm trees surrounding the area and it came crashing.

It was learnt that Yakowa’s mobile telephone was intact as it kept ringing after the crash.

“When we brought the body out, we started hearing sounds of phone ringing from the left side of his pocket.

We later discovered that calls were coming to the telephone and it could be from concerned persons but no one answered,” a security source, who pleaded anonymity, said.

When The PUNCH visited the site, wrecked and burnt parts of the chopper were found littering the area.

The swampy mangrove filled with tall trees and vegetation is located few kilometers to the Okoroba community, off the Ogbia Nembe waterways.

The personal effects of the deceased had been removed from the scene and their charred remains evacuated by security operatives and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency.

An eyewitness, who identified  himself as Anthony Marcus, told The PUNCH that a farmer close to the area saw the helicopter as it crashed.

Marcus, who led our correspondent to the crash site, said the farmer raised the alarm that attracted other villagers to the difficult terrain

“When we got there, there was smoke everywhere. But we saw the legs of Kaduna State Governor. The legs were not burnt and part of his traditional attire was intact. We knew him through his attire. But other bodies were burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

He added, “I was at the burial ceremony when the chopper took off.  It didn’t take off normally and it was flying very low.”

But it was learnt that some top military officers recovered the black boxes of the helicopter to determine the real cause of the tragedy.

It was also learnt that the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Ogbia, waterside Saturday night shortly after the rescue team located the site and moved to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, under the cover of darkness.

Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State
and former National Security Adviser
Andrew Owoye Azazi apparently died in
a helicopter that crashed today in Bayelsa
State, a reliable source has told
SaharaReporters.
Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi, a
retired military general who served as
chief security adviser to President
Goodluck Jonathan, were among
passengers in the ill-fated helicopter.
Nigeria's National Emergency
Management Authority (NEMA) had
earlier indicated that the agency had
activated a search for a crashed
helicopter.
Our sources had earlier disclosed that
the crashed chopper was carrying “some
major political figures.” As at the time
of going to press, Saharareporters was
unable to confirm the identity of any other
passengers in the ill-fated chopper.
Governor Yakowa and Mr. Azazi were
among many political figures who
reportedly attended the burial of the
father of senior presidential aide Oronto
Douglas. The funeral event took place in
the Nembe area of Bayelsa State earlier
today. SaharaReporters learnt that the
crashed helicopter was one of several
helicopters that some well-connected
people to the funeral.
The crash comes on the heels of a plane
crash on October 25, 2012 that has left
Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State
brain-damaged. Mr. Suntai was moved
to a hospital in Germany where he
remains in poor shape, unable to
recognize his visitors or to speak.

A Chinese baby born with a rare facial deformity that makes it appear like he is wearing a mask is being prepared for corrective surgery.

Zhao Huikang suffers from a severe form of macrostomia, a condition that leaves sufferers with an abnormally wide mouth, the Shanghai Daily reports.

Photographs of Zhao show his mouth appearing to stretch up to the middle of his face.

Zhao was born to a poor family in a rural area of the Hunan province. Family members encouraged his mother Yi Zilian to abandon him but she refused.

"The only thing I could do is to give him more love and more care and try our best to make him live a normal life," she said.

Zhao's deformity appeared so severe doctors were reluctant to let his mother see him after it was born, according to reports.

A Shanghai hospital has decided to provide free surgery to the boy to correct the deformity but Dr Ren Tianping said he may need many procedures over time as he grows up.

"Since he can't chew, the boy also suffers malnutrition," Dr Tianping said.

"Our surgery will ensure he can eat."

The procedures will repair the facial bones, muscles and surface tissue but doctors are still unsure whether the surgery will be successful.
