Mrs.Chima:
To think someone has to live a specific location or bornex by a specific parents to be considered cultural or tradition is asinine. I have seen many fresh of the plane Africans whom have rdpped their country only to later adopted white people culture.

Can you blame them? I live in america and I know how americans will shamelessly harass others due to their accent, their skin color, their hair texture, their African name, you name it. If one does not have a thick skin, it will be easy to succumb to pressure just to fit into rascist american society. I don't go knocking people down anymore who choose to become 'americanized' because I know exactly what immigrants especially African immigrants face in the united states.

Blyss: You people are confused. You seem to lack a genuine understanding of what you're culture is, and you call us lost. Humm, how ironic. cheesy

Kobojunkie: How do we define Culture in Nigeria?

At about 1:30 pm today, I walked into the student center at UIC to get me a snack, and I came upon a placard announcing a meeting in Cardinal room, organized by a 100 Igbos USA, INC and Umu Igbo Alliance entitled "Amandigbo". I was sure the words seemed Ibo so I went downstairs to the information desk and was told it was an african meeting. Being the curious person I am, I decided to check it out.

As I approached I saw a lady speaking at the podium, so I stood outside the door rather than walk in to get a good look at what was going on inside.
From the brochure, I learnt that the gathering was an Ibo gathering and the theme was cultural. However, flipping through the pages, I realized that more than 50% of it was filled with pictures of people/families who I have never heard of, and probably never seen too(no stories of them included--seemed more like some show off magazine lol ), and on the last two pages, the name of a bunch of medical practisioners who, again, I have never heard of before. Got me wondering what of culture they were all gathered to talk about, here in the United States. I admit I have not spent much time researching the organizations in question but if any of you have, please feel free to inform us on what it is exactly they each stand for.

We tend to talk a lot about culture in Nigeria, in a seemingly abstract manner by the way. And it seems individuals have their own idea of what culture is and what it applies to. My question is, apart from attires and dances, is culture still alive in Nigeria? If yes, in what form does it exist? What is culture to you?

UIC as in University of Illinois, Chicago? I got my Bachelors over there and I still use their gym almost everyday. Such a small world huh? Who knows, I might have even seen you around. grin

As for me, I can speak my language, I can cook my food, I wear my cultural attires, and I identify with my people. No, I do not follow very tradition, and yes, I've built my own identity.
I am not affiliated with any Nigerian social group or cause. No, I do not want to be affiliated with any Nigerian group or cause.

I've began individualizing myself a few years ago. I'm less cultural than I was 5 years ago. I'm more open-minded about Non-Nigerian groups. I do not seek out any Nigerian affiliated groups. I select which cultural attributes I want to support. As long as I get support from the most important woman in my life (my mother), I do not need to fear social disapproval. Infact, I do not care for any Nigerian social approval. Infact, if i was scorned by any Nigerian social group right now, I'll jump for joy lmao.

Enlightenment 101. Only good results can materialize from having such mindset. My ideologies embody a plethora of singular traditions/norms I have been lucky enough to encounter in my life.

anonymous6: It is your identity to a extent, the customs and traditions, foods, clothing, music, language that you share with another group 75% or 100% of the time. For me even though I was born and raised in America, I have some American mannerism that are inevitable but I understand the language(yoruba), cook the nigerian cuisines, know the history, customs and traditions, listen to the music plus other music(including movies), I wear the clothes in functions like weddings, and etc or sometimes in the house, but since I am in the western world I don't wear that 24/7. Also it can be what community you assimilate to for example even if you are not part of it by heritage(but they are not the majority).

It is basically what a group or community of people practice with each other that are similar in, like Indian culture, Jewish Culture, and etc. Your parents, location, what you assimilate to and etc molds that.

a) There are Nigerians in Nigeria who don't wear cultural attire 24/7

b) There are Nigerians who live in the village who have western mannerisms, and probably don't know much of their cultural history

c) There are yorubas in Nigeria who do not know to speak their own dialect.

d) There are many Nigerians who cannot cook, and they live in Nigeria.

e) There are Nigerians who live in Nigeria but do not watch Nigerian movies, listen to Nigerian music or even attend functions where they are required to dress in tradional attire. So many show up in their shirt and jeans.

Do the people who fall in any one or more of the above still have a cultural identity? Is that culture Nigerian or is that culture foreign even in cases where these people have never left their homeland? Who decides, for instance, in your village or home, what is cultural and what is not?

Culture is the way of life,(day to day) way of living and doing things by people in certain geographical area.... Unfortunately, our collective culture in Nigeria as of last night, remains LAWLESSNESS!

LAWLESSNESS everywhere! Lawlessness, the culture of my people!!

Nigerians never experience the painful strokes of the long arm of the law.

Some, just some of those that have never traveled of of Nigeria will not easily believe that those countries that function within the ambit of the law do enjoy the benefit of lawfulness from generation to generation.

This wishful thinking and i don't wanna die mindset many of us have outta there will not anything.....Not good comes easy!

China didn't get it right with soft hand, blood flew and still flowing,,,,,,,,,,Capital punishment will settle it all!

If our merciful God can outline strict COMMANDMENTS in the holy Bible, and servicing them since the day of Adam and Even till date, who is man to ever think that he can easily govern any society without effective LAWS?

Bad that you cannot describe it in words, then are you suggesting that in order to be cultural, every individual has to REMAIN in the very village he/she was born in, or hails from in order to know of this culture you speak of? Are you also suggesting that those who attended the meet this weekend, were there to waste their time given that they were gathered to discuss their 'culture' in a land thousands of miles away from their homeland?

If culture in Nigeria is limited by geographical location of the individual, why is it that even here in the united states, there are people of indian, pakistanic, Japanese, mexican, Ethiopian, chinese, etc, decent who are considered still immersed on their culture? Does this anomaly only apply to Nigerian cultures?

Culture is learned behavior, if you're after a basic sociological definition; Village drunks learned drunkenness as a result of oyibo cultural influence.

Anyway the question you asked was eventually going to lead to an attempt to denigrate Nigerian cultures and we Nigerians would fight back so i thought i would save everyone the long winded journey to an Fun of offensive picture posting by starting the ball rolling.

Kobojunkie:

So are these people still culturally Nigerians? Cause it seems Culture stops at the door for many of us, if we define it by the way we dress, eat, mannerisms, etc. Most folks don't wear their Aso Ebi when they are at home or at work. Matter of fact, that is majorly limited to cultural events and church, on thanksgiving days and what nots.

To be honest, I'm not sure how to answer the bolded question.

practicing what is specific and traditional to your people could make you cultural. But it seems like you're asking about the frequency. How frequent do we indulge to practice this "culture"?

I mean, even Nigerians at home do not always wear Aso ebi at home or work. So why should the Nigerians in diaspora be called cultural-less simply because they folow the same routine?

Cooking on a specific day of every year from generation to generation might be culture to a family. Culture is what is we practice and what we're expected to practice.

When you say culture has to do with the way we dress, eat, our mannerisms, are you saying even on a part-time basis? Cause when I think of our mannerisms, I think more of our habits . . what we do on a regular basis. If this "CULTURE" is not regular but more on occasion, then does it really have anything to do with our mannerisms, what we eat, how we dress? Cause those have a lot to do with our regular habits and choices.
For instance, like your cooking example, in America, many eat turkey only one thanksgiving. I am not sure I would go as far as to say it has much to do with culture, and there are millions who chose to skip the turkey entirely on that day.

Kobojunkie: What is Culture to you? Is Culture about the way you eat? What is it? How do you define it in your own life? Is it in the way you breath? Or is, like the African Americans mostly assume, in the way you dress, and wear your hair? What is it?

A lot of Organizations that pretend to stand for Cultural Representation tend to do so by having people dressed in certain attires. Is that what Culture now is about? Dressing up in huge headscarves and wrapper? Wearing Aso Ebi and the lot? Is that what your cultural identity is about? And this question is not just for those in the diaspora.

Culture is what differentiates life in one group from life in another group, that's my definition of culture

Culture are those cummulative factors that stand me and those of my ilk apart from others who do not share the same perceptions. Those factors were shaped from time immemorial by our forbears and passed on either by oral tradition or participant observation. In definitive terms culture sets people apart from others and covers the whole gamut of how we think, what we believe, our practises and beliefs.

I hope I have contributed to your term paper @ OP. Next time, askk us nicely to help you develop any research assignment that your lecturer has given you.

Yea, that's what I'm saying. Geographical locations can break up a specific group into smaller groups, due to maybe, the climate or ecosystem. So...I guess that geographical location may apply also. But definitely culture has to do more with groups in my opinion.
