taharqa: Just SHUT it there. ACN propaganda on this hv failed, period. Instead of us to look at how we can solve a problem that has been wit us since d 1970s by at least 1st supporting d passage of d PIB bill, sm of u guys just want to politicize everything. Respond directly to d fact that Ribadu himself said some of d figures they usd were not independently verified or just SHUT it. How does dat concern GEJ esp when most of these things happend b4 he took office
Bro, you shouldn't have bothered quoting that old fool by that moniker... He is busy working for his masters. But their propaganda is becoming glaring by the day

Ribadu’s report drama, ploy by Presidency to cover oil sector rot – Malami, SAN

ABUJA—The open disagreement over the report of the Nuhu Ribadu-led committee, which investigated the rot in the Nigerian oil industry, has been described as a premeditated action by the Presidency to rubbish the outcome and prevent the administration from accepting and implementing the recommendations.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, who made the claim in an exclusive interview with Vanguard yesterday, pointed out that the drama over the manner in which the report was written and presented to the government was masterminded by the same government that set it up.

“The purpose of what the government did was simply to divert Nigerians’ attention from the monumental looting by certain well placed individuals and top government agencies so as have justification for not implementing it.

“These elements are well connected and the government does not appear to be in a hurry to touch them given the weight of the evidence in both the Ribadu report and the Subsidy panel against them.

The legal practitioner said it was wrong for the Presidency to set up a committee to probe the infractions in the oil sector only for the same government to openly rubbish the outcome.

According to him, the President should have allowed Ribadu to hand in his report and ask for any other dissenting opinion on the matter, thereafter.

“The drama we saw was so clear that the government had planned to discredit the report turned in by the former EFCC chairman and it does not help this country in any way.

Turning to the political turf, Malami, who is the National Legal Adviser of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, noted that Nigerians should de-emphasise the issue of region and religion in the choice of the next President and focus on the capacity of the person to serve the nation.

According to him, the choice of the next president should be based strictly on the ability of the person to take the country to the next level, the preparedness of the person to take appropriate measures to tackle rising insecurity in the land and check mounting corruption that has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation.

Malami said, “No sectional presidency can salvage this country from its present decay and despondency. What we really need is a man who has the courage and the determination to confront the menace of corruption and insecurity that has stifled the nation’s progress.

The legal practitioner also dismissed as a waste of time and resources the current move to amend the Nigerian Constitution, pointing out that Nigeria’s problem was not caused by the constitution but by the treatment of issues with impunity by both the government and the people.

He said that without a deliberate and sustained effort by the government to tackle corruption and other challenges that have tended to keep the nation down, Nigerian would continue to slip daily even if the constitution was amended daily.

On the type of government that is most suitable for Nigeria given its complexity of religion and culture, Malami suggested that Federalism, which is currently being practiced in the country remains the best but called for serious reformations in the system to serve the people better.

He opined that the cost of governance should be drastically reduced so as to free some funds for the development of the critical areas of the economy and take care of the majority of the citizens who have been cut off from governance and thrown into the abyss of poverty.

“We should continue with Federalism but reduce the cost centres to the barest minimum by making government highly unattractive at all levels. All expenses associated with all tiers of government should be slashed substantially while accountability should be strengthened at all levels.

“We do not really need a full time National Assembly, which has taken a lot of our resources at the moment while the Executive should cut down on several areas of waste and save the money to improve the welfare of the majority of Nigerians who are languishing in squalour.

What I think Okupe means is that since the committee could not reconcile the figures in the report, Government will not indict anybody, company or government agency found wanting.
The excuse of Orosanye has been that Ribadu over reached the mandate of the committee by recommending reprimands and since Ribadu was unyielding the best thing to do is to challenge his figures so that government won't prosecute anyone.
Hope this is not a fresh air of corruption? Nigerians are watching

I weep for my country.. So painful that nobody can be trusted and as a mafia rule, I have always believed that the Ribadu could still stand tall at least not to compromise on a sensitive report as this one but lieu I was wrong. It pains to see that politics in Nigeria has gone so dirty that both the opposition and ruling parties are at dagger's drawn to see how to rubbish the reputation of their perceived opponent. When this subsidy issue came on board, I had no doubt that the presidency met well by appointing an opposition big wig like Ribadu to conduct this assignment on how the petroleum sector could be made more accountable in revenue to FG. The duty of this committee was not to probe but to investigate past transactions, reconcile figures with all the parties and agencies involved and come up with unbiased recommendations. But lieu , RIbadu in his characteristic self of overzealousness didn't not only do a shady job by not carrying every member of his committee along and not verifying his claims but went ahead to leak falsehood to the international press in order to sabotage government.. My question is do we have to play politics with every single thing in this country.. I Smh

GEJ can still be a positive for Nigeria if Nigerians can look at him and be honest with themselves to admit they made a mistake and learn the lessons that can make them conclude "never again". I.e never again , when many talented and proven solutions providers exist, will folks support a total mediocrity based on bias rather than a thorough and comprehensive look at his history as a tried and tested leader able to deliver solutions.

With GEJ, a very corrupt system played on our many biases (ethnic/religious/sectional et al) to sneak in their corruption-friendly candidate across the finish line. Many fell for it.

To be honest, the 2011 elections made me re-evaluate my opinion about Nigerians and their much vaunted "intelligence'. What happened in Nigeria, i.e many going to vote for an abject mediocrity out of bias, is not even happening any more in West African Nations we love to look down on and feel superior to. If anything, I think Nigerians are probably amongst the least politically sophisticated people in West Africa currently. Until we begin learning from mistakes, then nothing will change.

There was no genuine intention to do a clean out. NEITI has been shouting itself hoarse for the last couple of years about what was happening in the NNPC but the same Govt that funds it and knows the NEITI is backed by a law just collect the reports, smile, say welldone give a speech and turn the other way. The rot is so deep rooted. NEITI has been using independent auditors and the likes and has been presenting its report to the Govt but NADA.....they do not want any change in the system. Okukpe and co can say what they like....they have been bleeping us all these years.....on our time and our money......we have been enjoying it....if we didnt we would have revolted against the bleeping. Abeg second bass jooooo

taharqa: SHUT yr mouth you eediot. Virtually ALL of the bad practices and infractures the incomplete report indicatd happend way b4 GEJ became President. GEJ didnt cause d problem, he is rectifying them. If this report had not been so shamelessly politicizd, the focus wud hv been in putting pressure on d NA to pass d PIB bill which d President has sent to them (we all were essentially insulting d President, demanding he shld quickly send d bill to d NA which he has since done) cos MOST of d recommendatns of d committee are already in d very critical PIB bill dat wud completely turn-around d opaque oil industry and make it more open.....on dis issue of unverified data, it was Ribadu himself that wrote d govt that d committee did not verify d data it usd to come to SOME of its findings and then askd d govt to verify d figures demselves; so eida the govt takes its time to verify d data as Ribadu suggestd Or d govt sends d report back to d committee to complete its work COS there is no way govt can legally use d findings of a committee that admittd on its report that its figures hv not been verified/reconcild to retrieve monies from Oil companies even if we know sm of dem are still owing us. It is just as simple as that; there's no need been overtly Emotional about this

Just look at this chap! What good has Jonathan done? My friend, things are difficult in this country.

He pointed out the fourth paragraph signed by Ribadu and the secretary, Olasupo Shasore (SAN), which said the content of the report was not verified, as against the terms of reference of the committee that mandated it to consult with stakeholders and verify all claims.

from Day one, Ribadus assistant oransanye starts to frustrate the report bynot even attending for once a meeting in six month, and was given a role in NNPC board to kill the availability of those facts, the question is 'whoplanted oransanye,a shameless old fool in that commitee? What ribadu did was just to provide Nigerians with a sketch of whats going on and we are gratefull to him, as for why he signs,it was put to him to sign that it was not verified because they employ him,but he leaked the report, thankS to ribadu

How is that a credit to Ribadu's CV?
There's no how you can carry out an investigation of such magnitude without the involvement of professional Auditors and Consultants. In every audit, the keyword is "Investigation", "Verification" and "Reconciliation" of accounts and then "Recommendation" From what we hear, Ribadu only did the investigations and recommendations, leaving out the verification and reconciliation of accounts.
Ribadu went there to score cheap "Political Goals". If not, why should he leak the report to the media even before submitting it to the one that engaged his services.

I completely agree with ua comments. I wish Nigerians can for once see reason
to trust the view of their leaders.Only when they leave office we begin to
appreciate their effort.
I see a lot of sense in what Okupe has said.
Why pass over an unverified claim to govt? So that people will start counting the
number of committees GEJ has set up on one issue. Ribadu would have said his work
was not finished. He would have called what he sent in an interim report.
He should be allowed to continue from where he stopped.
