dataville: Every government agencies, private sector companies, educational and research institutions. NGOs and international organizations needs to collect data to gain insight into projections for the future.

Use of statistical methods has undergone a dramatic change as computers and IT methods have entered the research environment. Sophisticated analytics sofware (IBM SPSS, SAS, Excel, EViews, State etc) allows professionals to perform complex statistical techniques and draw valid conclusions from reports.

Data analysts on NL, please identify yourselves, share experience, contacts, challenges etc in today's fast evolving data and analytics industry.

Nice thread here but I'd appreciate if people can make constructive statements and not just d tools or apps dey use. Yes we all know a million and one stat package and tools . We don't need u to tell us that or brag bout some packages u just heard of but have no intensive knowledge on. Tell us what u've done with them and how to go bout it. Tell us about d quantitative reasoning behind ur work. How long have u been using dis tools.

It amazes me sum ppl don't even use one package for 2months befofre jumping to another and ask Dem dey say they are perfect on those packages.

I'd appreciate constructive and developmental statements on dis thread. Nice one OP

There is a lot more to data analytics than what most people think.
The data that is used for analysis has to come from a source, source data systems can vary within companies, some companies still use legacy systems that still work well for them.
As a result of this the data gotten from these systems have to be processed well enough (ETL) and stored in a structured manner (Enterprise DWH).
The journey of data no be small one but if planned and mapped out properly, your analytical data will be of the purest form and very much reliable.

Oga easy o
ETL - Extract Transform and Load, this is a written up process that EXTRACTS data from legacy systems, TRANSFORMS them into formats that the end users want and LOADS them into a final storage system (Usually a DWH)

DWH - This is a storage system (Similar to a database) but designed withe the sole purpose of storing historic and operational data in a ogical way where they can be extracted with ease for reporting and analytical purposes, databases do not serve this purpose as they are mainly designed for data storage.

Tried selling this pitch to NIMC and some other companies in Nigeria a few years back but trust all those yeye CEO's and DG's

Depends on what you're working on - different software packages are good for different scenarios.

IMO, start out with the most basic Excel. Excel has more than 200+ functions, get familiar with most of it's concepts because it does come VERY HANDY. Add on with other DBMS such as Access etc AND programming language as well such as basic VBA, and SQL queries with add on with other STATS app software packages. The learning experience doesn't begin in one day.

Nice thread.
Maybe the time has come for people studying Statistics in University to understand they are sitting on a gold mine.
They just have to be more proactive and source practical textbooks online. Ask anyone studying for a MBA at a decent school, and they will tell you that one of the most feared courses is Business Statistics. It is not enough to have the capacity to analyze data, but the practical interpretation and using same to solve business problems as well as scientific problems. In every thing we see, there is a pattern and we can even predict the mad Lagos traffic smiley and other phenomenon we see around us. Obama's victory has been attributed to solid data analysis. Companies can't also cope without good data scientist who understand the business. Pricing of goods and services as in cost management is only done well if organizations use Regression Analysis. I think the time has come for the big data professionals.

Oga Nnaiah, u don reach here again?

There are a lot of Nigerians that are into SAP BW / BI.

There are many tools out there for DATA analyst to use. You just have to find the one suitable for you to perform your job.

For me, i use SAP Business Object, SQL business suite and Excel on my job. But, i will have to say that no matter the tools you use, Microsoft excel is still one of the most powerful and fundamental tools out there for any data analyst.

If you are interested in big data, SAP is providing a 20 days trial to their HANA and Sybase tools

2sexy: Even though Ajenlekoko has dropped something much vital that the original post(OP), It seem LIKE not many people are aware of what BIG DATA is.

If you planning for the future as a data analyst, programmer, coder, statistician, etc you better brace up for the future. If you have the money, get a master degree in big data because there is a huge gap in skills required for this new technology.

So far, only a few universities in the US have managed to incorporate this into their advance study program and currently admit 50 to 80 candidates.

Companies such as Apple, Google, Oracle, Amazon etc are investing hugely into this new trend and Amazon currently have big data service.
Please enlighten us more about the big data master degree. Is the course available in Nigeria? Or how does one go about doing the programme? What are the requirements?

Since Big Data is the future of technology a brand new technology, it has been notice that there is a huge lack of specialist in this field. It was during my research that I found out that only a few university in the US that has just incorporated it into their advance study program.

Nigeria? How many people in Nigeria even know what Big Data is. Actually, this is not my area of specialization but if yours is, I will advice you do more research.

The bottom line is that only a few people are available for this new bride of the future which highly demanding but lacking the needed manpower.

I have degrees in stat/biostat and i want to go into sap bi but i need to find out if it has tools that can analyze complex stat data or that fits stat models (like nlmixed and co.)?

my interest is in the area of analyzing data for clinical trial and data for reliability study, I want to be sure that sap system can do such before delving into it.

@2Sexy,

Big data is not a new thing in the industry and there are many Nigerians out there that are expert in these new fields.

The latest technology in big data mart is the im-memory big data technology and i can count more than 10 Nigerians that i known that are certify and expert in these fields.

Big data or no big data, the essence of all the analytic tools out there is to provide business a better insight into their data and the opportunity to make better business decision. Take it from me, very few companies are actually using the few big data mart tools that we have in the market now.

As a business analyst, from my own personal opinion, to start or to succeed as an analyst, the fundamental knowledge of Excel is very important. But, if you want to learn Big data mart, you dont need to learn theorectical knowledge only at any foreign universities. Most software companies will give you access to their software for free for a limited number of times.

You couldn't have said it any better. This is why I told the dude who wants to become an analyst, start out with Excel, learn the basic fundamentals to advanced application and tools. Excel is VERY HANDY when dealing with real time concepts, I guess to each his own.
