This here is one very small giant step.

By Austin Ogwuda Asaba—
Delta State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU,
with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to develop a centre of
excellence for kidney transplant and treatment of kidney related diseases in the state. Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who signed on behalf of Delta State University
Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, in Texas, as he led a delegation of DELSUTH officials to the
centre, stated that the objective of the MoU was to establish a partnership that
promotes joint initiatives in the fields of nephrology and kidney transplantation
between the parties. He noted that it would take between 14 and 16 months to set up the fields of nephrology and kidney transplantation of internationally acceptable standards at DELSUTH. Specifically, the governor said this required improvement of the Dialysis centre, Laboratory, Radiology and Theatre departments of DELSUTH into centers of excellence. To achieve this, Governor Uduaghan disclosed that the state government would, in the next 10 months, enhance the infrastructure and equipment at DELSUTH as well as the capacity of the personnel. He said the personnel at DELSUTH would be sent to UTSMC for specialization and refresher courses to enable them cope with the new facilities and discharge their duties efficiently. Dr. Uduaghan noted that the overall objective was to make the facilities for nephrology and kidney transplant available and at a cheaper rate for the people.

I have some layman questions.

Are the kidney donors going to be willing donors, or unwilling ones ?

For the unwilling donors, how will they be re-educated to understand the importance of giving up their internal organs ?

This man can do no wrong by ♍ƺ again.
I always say that even if its one center, we need specialist centres for kidney and heart related ailments and that foreign consultants can even be gotten until nigerians are able to carry out this procedure effectively.
When operational, the cost of kidney transplant can't be as high as travelling abroad.

Am I to answer or should I wait for Uduaghan's response?

This is a good idea because alot of people are dying of kidney failure due to the inability to travel to abroad for the transplant. KUDOS TO YOU SIR ! ! !

If put in place it will go a long way in assuaging the sufferings and expenses of patients of failed kidneys.

Kidney failure is becoming rather common in our clime lately and just a fews hospitals have the dialysis machine, and it costs as much as N25000 for a session, imagine a patient has to undergo two sessions a week.

Watched a documentary and heard it costs just about $40 (N6500) in war torn Syria. Yet Nigerian hospitals charge four times over in a relatively peaceful country.

Its good Uduaghan has taken this good step and we can only pray he brings it to reality.

Nigerian administrators are wasteful & have no common sense. Kidney transplant is performed in UCH, Ibadan. Is it not economical & rational to liaise with UCH to train medical personnel in Delta State? Perhaps another channel to transfer funds abroad.
