The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has ordered the release of 20 prisoners serving various terms. Three others on death roll also had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
The action was in exercise of the Governor’s powersof Prerogative of Mercy under Section 212 subsection (1) of the 1999 constitution based on the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to a release by the State Commissioner for Information andStrategy, Alhaji YusuphOlaniyonu, the 20 Prisoners whose freedom has been ordered by thegovernor were among those serving sentences of three years imprisonment and above with 12 months left and are adjudged to have good records and good conduct.
The released prisoners include Opeoluwa Bankole, Kehinde Onifade, SaliuRaji, Gabriel Michael Paul, LateefOpeoluwa, AbubakarMuhammed, PopoolaYekini, Waheed Ogunwale, Lukman Osikoya and Afolabi Odunaike.
Others are Sunday Nnao, Sylvester Oboki, Monday Nbom, NurudeenAdeleke, Abubakar Abah, Sunday Isaac, Kehinde Rafiu, Sunkanmi Badejo, Abiodun Adetayo and IdrisAdewuyi.
The three others whose death sentences was commuted to life imprisonment are Sunday Olatunji convicted for murder, Segun Ogunsanya and Michael Ebedinwe, both of whom were convicted for armed robbery.
