Fed Govt owes Lagos N51b

Posted by: Okwy Iroegbu-Chikezie Posted date: January 02, 2013

The Federal Government owes Lagos State over N51 billion for roads constructed and certified on behalf of the Federal Government in some parts of the state.

The state Commissioner for Works & Infrastructure Dr Femi Hamzat made this known during an interview with The Nation in Lagos.

He listed some of the roads as Funsho Williams and several others at the Central Business District (CBD).

He urged the Federal Government to expedite the payment since the projects have been certified okay by its engineers.

Hamzat frowned at the blocking of the proposed $600million loan from the World Bank by the Federal Government, saying that it smacks more of a political move than economical, especially as the state has been able to prove its mettle in upgrading its infrastructure and services to Lagosians.

He said the achievement proves that the state government has used its funds in the best interest of its people.

Asked what the state would do if the Federal Government does not okay the World Bank loan, Hamzat said the state would deploy its ‘plan B’ to go ahead with its provision of infrastructure and social services to the people.

He, however, said there was no reason the loan request should not be granted.

He stressed that there is nothing wrong with the proposed borrowing as far as it is put into good use and serviced.

He added that the state has awarded the contract for the construction of Isheri Osun Bridge in the Jakande Estate, Isolo axis of the state to reduce the traffic snarl in the area, which is not only time consuming, but also affects the people.

Is this news meant to publicise FG's refusal to grant them go ahead for the loan? They should use the plan B or even C, so long as it doesn't involve borrowing.

Is it not wrong for Lagos State to go press on this without any rancour abt the acct balancing ? I think ACN leadership is becoming unethical by the day.

What is wrong with you people. I guess you would prefer it if Fashola left federal roads in Lagos to rot regardless of whether the Federal Government fixes them or not. That is what many governors do. If a federal road is bad they leave it alone. Some have even gone as far to create billboards on federal roads saying "This Road Belongs to the Federal Government." But Fashola decided to repair them and ask for a refund. What is wrong with that?

Every political topic that makes front page. 70 percent is boko haram and 25 percent is on Lagos. It means either Lagos state has the largest concentration of capital project implementation or it's all media campaigne. However with the level of topics related to atacking and denigrating Fashola showing the interest of PDP to capture Lagos state by sets of corrupt leaders and ex leaders,i think Lagos is simply ENVIABLE. You haters and Pdp sympathizers should hug transformer or jump inside niger. Best still encourage your failed government to emulate the enviable performance of Fashola. Your continuous anti fashola/lagos campaigne wnt change the minds of lagosians.

The impact of Lagos state on development would have been felt more,if FG contributed its quota to the development. Even at that,Lagos state remains the pride of Africa.

Which yeye document! Is it the roads we pass and pay toll for passing. So when FG pays them the money will they stop collecting tolls on the road. Afterall, its our stolen tax monies they used in constructing the road and tolling us on top.

Thank you jare. Ethnicity has blinded many people here in 9ja making them a victim of an unfounded hatred. Good is bad in their eyes. Instead of praising and appreciating good thing, they condemn it just because their state government had failf WOEFULLY

The man said ''the road had been certified ok by the FG''.... U sabi read at all......

How many of those roads are tolled? , Is it wrong to toll a road?, Remember the LASG provided an alternative route for those who cannot afford to pay the toll ....

Why are these PDP puppets so gullible?

FG does not contribute its quota,yet it has;
1)Upgraded the ports in lagos, while abandoning ports in other parts of the country.
2)Ensured that lagos have the second highest federal allocation in the country.
3)it has consistently paid lagos its allocation without fail(at least under GEJ)
4)It has always favoured the movement of foreign investments to lagos,at the detriments of other states.
5)it has ensured that the bulk of Nigeria's power is available to lagos to aid industries and companies.
6)it has signed various MOUs with lagos state govt to ensure smooth interplay between both parties and to aid trade and investments.
7)The FG is about to start oil-drilling in lagos next year, which would massively increase lagos revenues.
Infact, the FG(under GEJ) has favoured lagos state at the detriment of other viable states.

And the same FG couldn't guarantee LASG's $600m (N90bn) World Bank loan which the LASG never even defaulted in its obligations in the first tranche?

I wonder what the FG does with all its income when it can't fix its roads and as a responsive state government that realizes the economic importance of certain roads, the LASG has decided to fix them and what has the FG done in return? Fold its arms, do nothing as usual but budget money for energy saving light bulbs which were never bought and now mobile phones which will never be delivered.

Instead of distributing bulbs, can't you build micro power plants and instead of giving phones to farmers, can't you buy and lease equipment and land to them at low rates.

This shows a government that thinks slowly like it has admitted but after all the time spent thinking, they still reach absurd conclusions which they smear the face of Nigerians with.

We, the Yoruba people have been advocating for regional autonomy which will give us the license to judiciously utilize our resources for our common good and not contribute to a centre which does nothing with all the funds it gets

whatever the SW bar lagos (which is Nigeria's economic capital)contributes to the centre is almost insignificant when compared to the SS and even the SE.
If anyone needs Autonomy to move forward, then it should be the SS/SE.

BRF constructs roads in Lagos State.
GEJ pays the bills.
Nairalanders (sorry, BRF apologists on NL) insults and curses GEJ for not performing and praises BRF to high heavens. My people, whatever happened to "He who pays the piper dictates the tune".

My people, you see its all a vicious cycle. The FG is working whether you like it or not, whether you know it or not, there are a lot of things going on under the scene which you may obviously not be aware of. So please, when you talk, be careful, because you actually do not know what percentage is being paid for by different parties.
