kennethik: Uses of left hand is a habit formed by children while growing up, the only way to correct it is always
Be watchful in all they use the hands to do,like eating, waving maybe writing as case maybe.it's not hereditary or genetic inheritance, just correct the child anytime He or she makes an attempt of using the left hand.

You're wrong. It is genetic. my father was born lefty but was forced to change by his mother. I too to, his son, was born lefty. By this time my father knew better not to change me. i will not be surprised if any of my children will be born lefty. I will embrace it. Stop spreading false information. Left-handedness is genetic right from the bible times. Read about the Benjamites

I don't think it can be corrected. My younger brother is left handed, there was nothing my mum and my Grandmum didn'tdo to make him stop instead he learnt to use both right and left but he's more comfortable using left than right

There's nothing wrong with a child being a Lefty.

As far I'm concerned all the Left-Handed people

I have come across are very very smart and self willed.

Changing a child's left hand orientation to the right

only happens in Nigeria/Africa. Why? Superstition and

Ignorance. Simply cos the parents dont want the child

giving or receiving things from elders with their left hand.

Re: Left-handedness In Children; Can It Be Corrected? by Adewummy007: 9:29am On Apr 03, 2013
Ʊ can correct it by a technique called CIMT. But it can affect the speech of the child. There is no problem in left dominance. The only thing research talk about left handed is that they live less than their actual age if they re right handed but its still debatable. The other disadvantages re environmental factors because most things in nigeria are made in a right hand way such as desk attached to chair e.t.c. Advantages are left handed people are on several occasion brilliant. In conclusion allow the child to grow normally.

fresh_dude: just remember that nobody had ever being the president in either lineages of Barack Obama's parents. #just saying.

this has more to do with nurture. But natural characteristics are generic, which is the op was saying about her kid using his left hand despite such is not known in the parents' family, but i think there must have been some cases the op doesn't know about.

@op, there's nothing to be corrected, unless you want to confuse the kid. He uses his hands the way it comes with him naturally, please don't distort it.

I used to be a natural lefty, but mine was distorted. Now i do both hands, and must say i handle some simple things quite awkwardly. Was later adviced by a specialist to maintain using my natural left hand for handling things that has more to do with skills, epecially when it has to do with precision. The distortion now affects my handwriting, cus i use my right for writing now,and must say i have a bad one.

PrettyCindy:

I get your point. I wasnt so sure before but from what i have read from the general public (nairaland), i am cool now and have even given up the idea of attempting to change him (if he eventually turns out to be full blown lefty).

I wanted to advise but saw this post and I am glad.
But you need to put on the virtue of temperance as the Bible stated it,especially if you don't want anyone to spoil your day in NL.
Also do research about lefties on your own(google can help).
I did same research for my son and left him to it. I even went personally to his school to tell the teachers not to try forcing him to write with his right because they wanted him to use both hands if I approved.
Last December,I personally harrassed an elder(older than me) because he scolded my son for eating with his left.I noticed the boy suddenly stopped eating,I enquired and found out.I shr-edded the hell outta the man.
Academically, the guy is ontop of his class(consistently),at a cumulative of 93% and above every term.
And who said they know only creativity? My boy scores 100% in Math and Quantitative Aptitude.
You are blessed pretty one,so cherish the boy.
Cheers!

I think lefthandedness is one of the physiological variation in humans just like tongue rolling, so nothing is wrong with it as not many people can roll their tongue and this doesnt make them witch or wizard

Re: Left-handedness In Children; Can It Be Corrected? by Nobody: 9:34am On Apr 03, 2013
Forcing a person to use the right hand when their lefties violates a person`s freedom of choice. Forcing a child is child abuse. There is absolutely no reason why your left-handed child should be at any disadvantage at school or home sad. I am left-handed and it has never caused me any problems!
Lefthandedness is not "bad." I think it's time we all mature/evolve and let go of these superstitions that were set up to keep people further divided. It takes time and effort. I was taught that it was "bad" manners to shake hands with people with the left hand. I'm sure there are other "rules of conduct" based in negative superstition. I think it comes down to fear. Many people fear what they do not understand or what is rare, and so they demonize it. It's pretty archaic, and can be damaging to a lefthanded child's self-esteem.

ireke: I didn't take time to go through the thread to see if this has been mentioned but studies show that forcing children to be right handed tend to take away from their "smartness". SO be careful with forcing your children to conform to your mental image. just google the effect of forcing a child to be right handed
I just don't get where you people generates these lame theories about correction making them slow or clumsy from, its all nonsense.
The last child of my parents who is 15yrs old now started using his left hand to do everything as a child and we were able to correct it,today he uses his right hand to do everything except playing football which he does with his left leg.
He is exceptionally brilliant and one of the best SS2 students at Command Day Second. Sch,Ojo.
I personally can't stand the sight of a child written or eating with his/her left hand,my younger sister's daughter who is two years old is also making use of her left hands instead of write and we are working on making her use her right hand especially to eat and write.
If the OP feels she can dedicated her time to watch the child all the time and caution him whenever he makes use of his left then I see no reason she should be called names or bring up theories that are irrelevant, correcting the child will not in anyway make him clumsy or slow as you people here insinuates.
My close friend was born lefty but he uses his right hand to do everything including writing because the parents corrected it when he was a child and today he feels happy using his right hand instead of left.

What is wrong with being a southpaw? My immediate younger brother is a southpaw but a teacher tried to 'correct' him while he was in nursery school. We didn't know till we started noticing him behaving 'odd'. He couldn't hold anything firm any longer. His food splattered on the floor all the time and he started losing his psychometric skills. My parents were confused till a specialist told them that it was because they were trying to 'reprogram' the boy's brain. My father was livid when he discovered that it was the teacher's doing. He saw my brother as a replica of his father (my grandfather was a southpaw too). They changed the boy's school mid-session.

Please let the boy be. That is the normal way his brain works. Read Ben Carson's book, Gifted Hands, for more understanding of how the brain functions (at least from a layman's perspective)
Re: Left-handedness In Children; Can It Be Corrected? by eforce: 9:42am On Apr 03, 2013
Correcting left handedness in children can lead to insanity, like seriously, the brain would completely shut down in the process of trying to switch from the right side to the left side to power the right hand.

PrettyCindy: Hello everyone, people around me have been saying that my 1 year old son is a 'lefty'. Though i have keenly observed that he does practically everything from picking up objects to waving goodbye with his left hand.

I don't believe he is a 'lefty' because i feel its because he sees me and others use our right hand alot which to him may be left when he is facing opposite me or anyone.
Besides no one uses left hand in my family and am certain its same in his birth father too so i keep wondering where he got it from.

I do not like it and want to correct and stop it.

Someone said that it cannot be corrected because he was born that way. I totally disagree.

If anyone of you has experienced such in your kid and was able to correct it, how did you do it?

I can't believe there are people that think like this, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being a "lefty"
Trying to "correct" your son can slow down his mental growth, as his brain is more aligned to the left ( there are articles on this issue on the internet, invest some time, so ur selfishness won't ruin your child)

Erm Mr, you don't know better than the people that conducted research on this issue, the fact that your 15 year old child is performing well @ school doesn't mean you didn't slow down his mental growth, who knows he could have been einstein level if you had allowed him use his left.

My daughter is Lefty, I bless God for her, she is 2yrs 6 months today. I graciously watch her whenever she does things(write, pick up things etc) with her left hand . I love it, very facinating... I believe I was force from left to right hand cos I write my zero in clockwise mode despite the fact that I am righty. Normal righty writes zero anti- clockwise (try it now!). People normally make jest of me when they see me write zero. It was when my daughter starter using left that everything becomes crystal clear to me. I have started learning how to use my left to perform some task too, so that my daughter will feel comfortable using her left hand.

PrettyCindy: You people keep mentioning Barrack Obama. I no fit laugh abeg. So if he is a lefty nko? Abegi......

I didnt say its a problem because it is not. Its a habit learnt from toddler years. I will make efforts and teach him how to use his right hand like Kenneth said.
I disagree with the bolded. On one hand, if its a habit, he will definately change, on the other hand, if its inborn, then, he wont change it. Trying to change him will cause him psychological problem in learning. I sometimes read a book on psychology talking about the use of right and left hand. (its been a long time though) i cant really remember it but it said something like if what is controlling the use of the hands is located at the left side of the brain, then the person would be left-handed, trying to change him/her will cause the child to be slow in learning but if it is located at the right side and the child chooses to use his left hand, you can change him/her, it wont affect his/her learning process.
If my sister sees a lefty walking, she will definately know cos they prefer walking and bending to the left.
