Hillary Clinton Resigns As US Secretary Of State by Orpelin: 6:07pm On Feb 01, 2013
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is leaving office with a slap at critics of the Obama administration's handling of the September attack on a US diplomatic mission in Libya. She told The Associated Press that critics of the administration's handling of the attack don't live in an "evidence-based world" and their refusal to "accept the facts" is unfortunate and regrettable for the political system.
Today, former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry will be sworn in as Clinton's successor.
In her last one-on-one interview before she steps down on
Friday, Clinton told the AP that the attack in Benghazi was the
low point of her time as America's top diplomat. But she
suggested that the furor over the assault would not affect
whether she runs for president in 2016.
Although she insisted that she has not decided what her future holds, she said she "absolutely" still plans to make a difference on issues she cares about in speeches and in a sequel to her 2003 memoir, "Living History," that will focus largely on her years as secretary of state.
Clinton spoke to the AP Thursday in her outer office on the
seventh floor of the State Department less than 24 hours before she walks out for a final time as boss. She was relaxed but clearly perturbed by allegations from Republican lawmakers and commentators that the administration had intentionally misled the public about whether the attack was a protest gone awry or a terrorist attack, or intentionally withheld additional security for diplomatic personnel in Libya knowing that an attack could happen.
An independent panel she convened to look into the incident
was scathing in its criticism of the State Department and singled out four officials for serious management and leadership failures. But it also determined that there was no
guarantee that extra personnel could have prevented the deaths of the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans. Clinton herself was not blamed, although she has said she accepted responsibility for the situation.
Clinton faced a barrage of hostile questions about Benghazi
from Republican lawmakers when she testified before Congress recently in appearances that were delayed from December because of illness. Afterward, some lawmakers continued to accuse her and the administration of withholding evidence.
Clinton said she refused to be discouraged by the fact that
critics "are never going to accept the facts and the limitations
of the facts." Because of that, she said, the partisan divide should not dissuade anyone with a cause from getting involved in politics and she hinted strongly that a divisive atmosphere would not stop her in any future endeavour.

Hillary Clinton: A long journey
By Kim Ghattas BBC State Department Correspondent.

Over the decades, Hillary Clinton has gone from student
activist to globetrotting stateswoman. On her last day as US
secretary of state, has her journey ended or is there more to
come?
She's been on the world stage since Bill Clinton became the
"comeback kid" and she became first lady in 1992.
Americans have named her the most admired woman in the world 17 years in a row in a Gallup poll.
After travelling almost a million miles around the globe, she
leaves her job as secretary of state with close to 70% approval ratings - higher than any outgoing secretary of state measured since 1948, with the exception of Colin Powell.
President Barack Obama has described her as one of the country's finest secretaries of state.
Although many have always admired her, she has had many
detractors and her approval ratings have occasionally plummeted over the course of her career.
Clinton, the first lady, was seen by her conservative opponents as uncompromising, confrontational and deeply polarising. They hated her and everything she stood for, and she hated them back, calling them a vast right-wing conspiracy.
"As first lady she was unapologetically political," says Jason
Horowitz, a Washington Post reporter who covered Clinton's 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination.
She was the first wife of an American president since Eleanor
Roosevelt who played a prominent role in policy-making. She had her own office in the West Wing, a degree and a career, and critics accused her of trying to be co-president. Her efforts at healthcare reform faced a groundswell of opposition and failed.
When she decided to run for president, "a lot of people thought she did not stand for what America was supposed to stand for", says Horowitz.
"But I don't think there was one underlying thing all those people felt about her. There are these empty vessels that people pour into. She's one of those people that people project on to."

That was a smart political move. She is eyeing the next presidential election and needs time to prepare and mobilise ground support.
Also, serving for another term in Obamas cabinet might spell doom for her presidential ambition if Obama does not do well in his second term;she would be labelled as a product of a failed administration who has nothing new to offer.

As a secretary of state, she has had to travel so much under tight schedules and being a woman that she is,she needs some time to recuperate and also look after her family, the fear of Monica is the beginning of wisdom.

First paragraph is a succinct and extremely valid analysis. It summarises this incident perfectly.

2nd paragraph? What are we saying here? Which family? Bill who is always busy making appearances at $1m per lecture/speech? Or Chelsea who is busy nacking her husband?

If she can't handle the pressure of tight schedules, how exactly does she expect to succeed as POTUS? Contradictory statement man. Let's scrap the 2nd paragraph and we're good to go.

In Nigeria my country, when you are accused as a fraud, instead of being reprimanded in prison, you will become a close friend of the government of the day, thereby taking away juicy favors in contract awards and political appointment. Bode George is a case study here.
