Christian Faith in Action
God wants Christians to show true love and treat others fairly irrespective of their status. James 2:8 - If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. The followings are discussed: Avoid Discrimination; Keep the Royal Law, and Work Your Faith.

Avoid Discrimination: James warned Christians in the early Church against treatment of believers based on social prominence which resulted in discrimination. He made it known that favouritism and other wrong practices such as giving special attention and offering seats of honour to the wealthy while the poor were treated in a different way were a grave sin before God (James 2:1-4). Some Christians today may experience similar treatment in a society that values status and recognises people based on their wealth. Churches must not indulge in practices that overvalues things that are less important. Christians are called to treat people fairly especially those who are often rejected by the society. We must conform to Christ's value system as his true representatives in the earth.

The early Church was not rich in wealth but very rich in faith. As a result majority of the wealthy individuals were opposed to the gospel, oppressed and took advantage of the followers of Christ. They rejected Christ's message that preached fair treatment and care for those in need, and chose instead to amass wealth for themselves at the expense of the poor (James 2:5-7). James wanted Christians to know that the rich people they sought to impress had rejected faith they held in high esteem, pointing to hostile attitude the rich held toward the faithful. James wasn't saying that riches made people evil, but they are made evil when they reject God and pursue riches. Therefore Christians must not view the rich as a special class because of their status, but as those in need salvation.

Keep the Royal Law: James reinstated the need to keep the great commandment as the only condition for respecting and treating people fairly (James 2:8 ). This is what he called 'royal law'. It is about loving others as oneself and God with the whole heart. He was referring to what Jesus had described as the greatest commandment (Deut 6:5; Mathew 22:37-40; Mark 12:28-31; Luke 10:25-28). It is not possible to please God without keeping His commandment. We can only keep it when we treat all people fairly, including those who are rejected and despised by the society. God values them and wants us to do so as well because our salvation through Christ's death wasn't linked to wealth or status. God's offer of eternal life is for all people. Believers must not neglect any aspect in keeping God's commandments as disobedience to the commands brings judgement.

Work Your Faith: James makes it known that faith without work is dead and useless. Godly works and actions are required to live by faith in Jesus. Godly actions involve exhibiting characters such as love, mercy and justice which help believers to walk with Jesus. We can demonstrate true faith by participating actively in God's service and saving lives through what we say and do. Those who walked with God and acted by faith were declared righteous individuals in the old testament (James 2:20-26). Faith and good works are required for Christians to live righteously, honour God and experience His salvation. Lesson texts: James 2:1-26.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Pentecost)

Churches that are alive in Christ will strive to grow in the Spirit and power of God. The essence of Pentecost is to reveal that God gives and fills those who are in Christ with His Holy Spirit. Acts 2:39 - For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our Lord shall call. The followings are discussed: Baptism in the Holy Spirit Foretold; Baptism in the Spirit Received, Spirit Baptism for All Believers.

Baptism in the Spirit Foretold: Jesus had told disciples that he would send Holy Spirit who would enable them and his followers to go into the world, preach the gospel with boldness and win souls to the kingdom of God (Acts 1:4-5). He also gave specific instructions concerning when, where and how believers could receive Holy Spirit baptism which they needed to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins, and harvest souls to the kingdom of God. The Holy Spirit baptism would be experienced as described in the Old Testament (Joel 2: 28-29) and would be required for the service that would bring about redemption and salvation.

God sent His Spirit to open our minds to His plan for the eternal life and give the awareness about Christ's future rule (Acts 1:6-8 ). Jesus had said that believers would receive the power when Holy Spirit came upon them. The spiritual power can't be attributed to personal merit; it comes from God and enables believers to do His service. God would also empower believers who have received His Spirit to witness for Him as the One True God and declare the good news of His salvation through Christ to all people.

The Holy Spirit Baptism was received as promised by Jesus and its coincidence with the day of the Pentecost, one of the main harvest feasts (Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacle) prescribed by the Law points to harvest of souls as the firstfruits of spiritual resurrection. Harvest of souls started on the Day of Pentecost with 120 believers who had obeyed Christ's command and gathered for prayer (Acts 2:1-4). The gathering that looked like ordinary setting suddenly changed to a powerful spiritual encounter where the power of God was mightily manifested. The power of God came with three signs - strong wind, fire and speaking in tongues during the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

People who had come from far and near to Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost were surprised by the supernatural event which showed manifestation of the power of Holy Spirit among the believers. The new Pentecost had started with believers who were endued with the power to proclaim the gospel and bring others to the saving faith in Christ (Acts 2:5-13). The Holy Spirit baptism which started on the day of Pentecost reminds Christians of the need to seek the power of Holy Spirit, witness for Christ and preach the kingdom of God.

Spirit Baptism for All Believers: Baptism and the gifts of Holy Spirit to all believers were a fulfilment of the old testament prophecy. Christ's disciples had been hiding to avoid persecution, but when the Spirit had come upon them, they spoke bodly concerning outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days (Acts 2:14-18). It's through the power of Holy Spirit that the gospel can be preached in all places and those who believe and call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Peter declared the need for repentance and to seek forgiveness as the first step to experience spiritual transformation. Thereafter the people would be baptised in water and the Holy Spirit to become the firstfruits of harvest of souls. Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an important part of Christian life and the requirement to faithfully do the service of God and live righteously (Galatians 5:22-26) . Lesson texts: Acts 1:1-8; 2:1-39.

Tame Your Tongue

We must guard our tongues against utterances that could harm or destroy others and use them as an instrument of blessing. Proverbs 12:18 - There is that speaketh like the piercing of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. The followings are discussed: Control Your Speech; Destructive Nature of the Tongue, and Speak and live Wisely.

Control Your Tongue: James tells the teachers of the word of God and those occupying leadership positions in the Church to see themselves as stewards who will one day give account of their deeds and utterances. Just as actions do, words of the mouth can lead people toward or away from God. While the Early Church struggled against heretical teachings of false teachers, James warned the aspiring teachers to beware of teachings that were not in line with the word of God (James 1:3). He calls on those who want to become teachers, and all who want to engage in spiritual leadership to recognise immense responsibilities accompanying roles they will play, and that they would be accountable for what they say. Teachers of the word need to regularly study the Word, seek God in prayer, submit to godly authority and ask for the wisdom to live an accountable life.

James also included all believers in the message, requiring them to watch their tongues. He asserted that a person who is able to control his speech will be able to control virtually everything else and called such person 'perfect' (James 3:2-5). It would easier to control other aspects of one's life if the tongue can be controlled. The tongue is described as a part of the body that can spark tremendous passions or emotions, and has the power to alter lives. Therefore we need the power of Holy Spirit to help us control our tongues and say words that can edify others. Christians are not to speak carelessly, but say words that can save lives.

Destructive Nature of the Tongue: Tongue holds great corrupting power and should be guarded against careless words that can destroy families, friendships and even spark wars between nations. James described tongue as a fire and potent tool in the hand of Satan. It corrupts personalities and pollutes souls to spark anger, nurse grudges and create enmity. People have been able to tame animals and control many things in the environment, but it has been difficult to control tongue (James 3:6-8 ). Tongue remains as dangerous and corrosive as deadly poison. It's destructive power is evident in our society, even in the Church. Some people often talk carelessly, saying things that can breed resentment and destroy relationships with others.

James also talks about those who are expected to praise God but speak evil of fellow human beings. Tongue should be used for the highest purpose which is to exalt God, and not to abuse others. Our words should build up and bring blessings to others (James 3:9-12). When we offer praises and exalt God He sends down blessings. Gossips and other forms of inglorious statements should be removed from our mouths so that our lives can be a blessing and build others up.

Speak and Live Wisely: James speaks about two kinds of wisdom: heavenly and earthly wisdom. Believers are enjoined to choose wisdom that comes from God over the wisdom of this world. While the earthly wisdom harbours sinful attitudes such as envy and selfish ambition, godly wisdom proclaims the truth and leads to eternal life (James 3:13-6). Earthly wisdom has negative characteristics which destroy the society while the wisdom of God produces qualities such as love, godliness, selflessness, mercy and others that help to do good and pursue eternal priorities.

Wisdom that comes from the above has eternal value and exhibits Christ-like behaviour. It makes relationships work and transforms the society. Godly wisdom reflects humility which is part of Christ life. Christ humbled himself by leaving glories of heaven and coming to this world. Humility will make us look at others as Christ sees them and threat them with godly love. We must forgive offences and humbly admit when we are wrong. The Church and entire society will benefit from our contributions when our words are characterized by godly love and selfless service. Lesson text: James 3:1-18.

Don't Live Worldly

Living worldly is not limited to indulgence in immoral activities and pursuits of personal aggrandizements, it involves lifestyle that is against God's purpose for living. James 4:7 - Submit yourself therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you . The followings are discussed: Control Your Desires; Draw Near to God, and Pursue God's Will.

Control Your Desires: People can not be satisfied in the pursuits and desires for personal satisfaction because they are products of lusts and can lead to outward conflicts. God is not pleased with personal or worldly desires which draw people away from Him (James 4:1-3). Christians must understand that improper desires are borne out of wrong motives and draw people away from God. We must evaluate things we want and find out how they can fulfill our lives and influence our relationship with God. The motive is wrong if such desires are meant to replace unique satisfaction of a relationship with God.

James also warns believers to beware of things they love more than God or use to replace God in their lives. He refers to those things as adultery and those who love them as adulterers. Spiritual adultery involves attempts to be committed in a relationship with God while worldly things are embraced for personal satisfaction. Believers can't just serve two masters; they can't claim to love God and things of the world at the same time (James 4:4-6). Love of the world is an enmity of God. We can't be double-minded, claiming to seek satisfaction in God and worldly pleasures. God has promised to satisfy us with good things if our relationship with Him brings about contentment in the family, status, position and material things. Dissatisfaction results in divided heart that create carnal desires. Christians will also be tempted to seek satisfaction in other things but they must depend upon God to meet their needs. God will provide for those who are committed and humbly seek satisfaction in Him. He will ignore those who question His ability to provide for needs and seek fulfillment on their own.

Draw Near to God: James provides seven keys which draw believers close to God and help to find genuine and godly fulfilment in Him (James 4:7-10). First, Christians are required to submit themselves to God, recognizing His sovereignty and authority and choosing to live according to His will. Second, We must resist the devil, and this can be successfully done when we love God with our whole hearts and find contentment in Him. Third, We must draw near to God; He is not far from those who seek and walk in His way. Fourth, Christians are to wash or cleanse their hands of sins. We must surrender our lives to God in order to receive things are good and convenient for living. The fifth key is to purify our hearts, express our affections and loyalties to God. We can't be double-minded and still please God. Sixth, Christians are to grieve over past sins; they must recognize their implications and thus look up to God for forgiveness and a restored relationship. The last key is to humble oneself. Humility leads to submission and help build genuine trust in God.

Believers must also submit to one another if they are truly submitted to God. It would be easier to resolve conflicts and restore faulty relationships if Christians can humble themselves and submit to one another. James also remind people that they can not be perfect in judging others, thus they must leave judgment to God who is capable to make and enforce law with righteousness (James 4:12-12). Christians are called to restore, not condemn someone caught in sin or suffering for sin (Matthew 18:15-17). When we find our fulfilment in God we will seek to restore others.

Pursue God's Will: Believers must have a proper view of themselves, knowing that no one has control over his or life. Unexpected circumstances can terminate life, cause failure or render a person useless. Therefore there is need to pursue God and stay connected with Him for success in our endeavors. Christians must put the the principle of godly planning in practice. We must consider the will and purpose of God in our plans and decisions. We must recognize the supremacy of God and commit all activities into His hands. It is ungodly and sinful for a person to focus on personal successes which are based on worldly decisions and offer temporary pleasure . Choosing not to know and serve God is a sin and those who are guilty of this are transgressors Lesson texts: James 4:1-17

Cultivate Right Attitude
Right attitude and faith in God help Christians treat others fairly and live to honour God. James 5:8. Be ye also patient; stablish your your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. The followings are discussed: Pursue Justice; Be patient in Suffering, and Depend on God.

Pursue Justice: Some people have wrong attitudes toward wealth that instead of trusting God and appreciating Him for their possession they boast about their wealth and use their status to exploit others (James 5:1-3). God detests this kind of behaviour and will judge those who are guilty of it. It is very wrong to hoard wealth at the expense of the poor and needy. Riches will either corrupt or come to an end one day, but riches that are rooted in God's glory will last to eternity.

James says it is bad to deny a worker full reward of his labour. Employees are to be treated fairly and should not be robbed of fair wages by the employers (James 5: 4-6; Malachi 3:6). Employers must not seek satisfaction that will make their employees struggle in poverty. It is a pity that majority of the wealthy people desire and consume what they don't need while the poor suffer in need. God's judgement is upon this kind of attitude. God expects those diligently serving Him to be generous especially toward the poor. Christians can show love and extend generosity to others through compassionate ministry which aim is to gather funds and aids and distribute them to the needy. Those who invest their resources to benefit others are blessed; they will receive what seems to have been lost in many folds (Proverbs 11:24). We are to cultivate Christ-like attitude and avoid taking advantage of the poor.

Be Patient in Suffering: James encourages believers to be patient in anticipation of Christ's return. Hope of Christ's return should motivate Christians to be patient and endure in the face of struggles, knowing that his return is imminent (James 5:10-12). Christ may tarry he will surely return. Believers are to look up to Jesus, keep eyes on eternity and do away with attitudes that can bring destruction.

Those who are pursuing the world will make life difficult for the persons who faithfully follow God, and may frustrate them to the extent of denying faith and rejecting God. Job experienced similar problem but he didn't renounce his faith in God. He patiently endured difficulty and would respond with the word of hope and assurance that God would restore him. In the end God rewarded Job for his faithfulness (James 5:10-12). Job experience reminds us that lasting joy and happiness are not laid in temporal things. God will see us through disappointments of life if our perseverance and patience are rooted in the right attitude of trust and faith in Him.

Depend on God: One of the requirements to depend on God and expect spiritual victory from life challenges is prayer. Christians are not encouraged to face challenges alone. We need the support of members who can help us grow in faith and receive strength through the power of Holy Spirit ( James 5:13-16). Christians must say prayer of faith and believe that their requests will be granted when they depend upon God and seek His will (James 5:17-20). Elijah offered the prayer of faith which made it impossible for rain to fall in Israel for 3 years and 6 months. He demonstrated that God would answer prayer of the faithful to bring Glory and honour two His name. God also granted his prayer when he prayed for the rain. God honours genuine faith and will give grace to those walking with Him and relating with others with the right attitude. Lesson text: James 5:1-20

Samuel, Example of Integrity

Christians are to lead lives of integrity in spite of the moral decadence in the society and corruption in high places. 1 Samuel 12:23: Moreover as for me (Samuel), God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the and right way . The followings are discussed: Samuel's Testimony of Integrity; Samuel Calls Israel to faithfulness, and God's Faithfulness affirmed.

Samuel declared boldly to the people of Israel that he had lived a life integrity since he became the spiritual and national leader. He was devoted to the work of God and committed in service to the land. He treated people fairly and lived above reproach (1 Samuel 12:1-5). Believers must learn from Samuel's testimony of integrity to stay upright and keep faith through difficult circumstances. Christians are expected to guard against whatever can damage their witness for Christ.

Samuel Called Israel to Faithfulness: Samuel reminded the people of God's faithfulness throughout their history. God saved them from slavery, gave them victory over enemies and settled them as a nation even though, they were not faithful. In spite of their rebellious acts God delivered them repeatedly from the enemies. They ignored Samuel's warning and often lost their trust in God but God remained faithful to them. God overlooked their rebellious demand and gave them Saul as the king in recognition of His ultimate authority. Great importance is attached to leadership position and those in the position of authority must recognise God-given authority and know that they will answer to God (1Samuel 12:6-13). Samuel cautioned the people about rebellious acts and told them curses of disobedience and blessings that would follow obedience to God ( 1 Samuel 12:14-15).

God's Faithfulness Affirmed: Samuel's prayer for the people and the land of Israel was answered by great display of the power of God. The people were gripped with fear and their eyes were opened to their sinful rebellion (1 Samuel 12:16-19). Samuel asked them to stop pursuing worldly things that led to idolatry and turn to turn to God and serve Him with all their heart. God would still forgive and show love to the people despite their shortcomings (12: 20-25) . He had chosen the people and established them as a nation through which His plan would be made known to all people.

Samuel revealed that failure in discharge of leadership responsibility is an act of sinfulness. He said he would sin against God if he ceased to pray for the people. He dedicated his time to meeting needs of the people and building a nation that God would keep and bless. God will bless those who are committed in a relationship with Him. Lesson text: 1 Samuel 12:1-25).

Disobedience to God Brings Judgement

God gave his commands to guide and bring our desires into conformity with His will. He chose Saul to be a king but rejected him when he had morally and spiritually failed in discharge of his duty. 1 Samuel 15:22 - And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. The followings are discussed: God Rejects Saul as the King; Saul Grievous Disobedience, and Obedience is better than sacrifice.

God Rejects Saul as the King: Saul sought and received divine help through numerous battles since he was made the king but it got to a time he replaced obedience to godly instruction with arrogance. His son, Jonathan provoked war against the Philistine whose army was as sand compared to Israel's army which was so small in size. The people were gripped with fear and trembled as a result of their poor preparation to fight the battle ( 1 Samuel 13:1-7).

Saul couldn't have led Israel's army to battle and won without obedience to specific instructions from Samuel. The prophet gave the instruction which required Saul to trust him and place his faith in God. The people were intimidated by the presence of Philistine army and Saul could no longer wait until the time Samuel would come back. He took the matter into his hands and offered sacrifice to seek God's favour, which was Samuel's role. Upon his arrival Samuel confronted Saul for his misdeed which was rooted in disobedience to God's command (1 Samuel 13:8-14).

Offering of sacrifice to God was to be done by the prophet, and not the king. We often find it difficult to wait on God and can even be tempted to stop putting trust in God and search for our own solutions. At such times we should desire to honour God and think less of our fears. Though Saul admitted his disobedience, he couldn't escape consequences of his action. God called the people out of nations and demanded their obedience to Him over any other consideration.

Saul's Grievous Disobedience: Saul failed in another test of obedience to divine decree which was to affirm sovereignty of God in Israel. God assured the people of victory over the enemies but gave the instructions (1 Samuel 15:1-8 ). Saul couldn't heed the warning and failed to follow God's command the second time. Obedience to God while seeking divine direction is crucial for victory in a battle. Christians don't fight against nations as Israel did in the Old Testament, our battles are spiritual and involve struggle against temptation and all manners of evils. Therefore we should depend fully on God for victory.

Saul's disobedience and wrong choice brought serious consequence that led to inglorious end of reign as the king. Samuel was so sorrowful as God regretted having made Saul king (1 Samuel 15:7-11).

Obedience is Better than Sacrifice: Samuel confronted Saul over his disobedience and refusal to take responsibility for his actions, especially when he thought the victory was by his wisdom and disregarded God's instruction. He reviewed how God made and empowered him to be a king, his disobedience to God's command brought an end to his reign (1 Samuel 15: 12-21). Christian must take obedience to God's word seriously in the face of temptation and try to guard right relationship with God which guarantees victory. Temptation may come in a subtle way and present good intention, we must follow the way of God to understand its influence and overcome.

God expects obedience of His people as they serve Him. God detests and will punish people for the sin of disobedience to His commands (1 Samuel 15:22-29). God's rejection of Saul shows that consequences of disobedience are sorrowful. Disobedience to God's authority leads to judgement and sad end. We must approach God with humility and seek His way which is the best for our lives. Lesson texts: 1 Samuel 13:1-23; 15:1-35.

Samuel Anoints David King

Our decisions and choices have temporary and lasting effects. God helps His people to live by His wisdom and make right choices that offer good rewards over time. 1 Samuel 16:13 - Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the mist of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. The followings are discussed: God Directs Samuel; God Chooses David, and God Positions David.

God Directs Samuel: Samuel mourned and parted ways with Saul following his rejection by God. Saul was rejected as a result of his disobedience and failure to repent. After the severed relationship Samuel parted company with the disgraced and disobedient king 15:34-35). We could experience a strained relationship when people close to us choose to reject God. Christians should neither harbour resentment nor reject them. We can feel the pain but must not allow it to weigh us down. It is our responsibility to pray for their restoration.

God instructed Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint a new king for Israel. God will change persons for disobedience as He carries out His plan. Samuel was afraid of Saul, thinking of possible attack if he discovered his move to anoint a new king (1 Samuel 16: 1-5). Samuel sought God for the direction through the challenges instead of relying on his own. Rather than pursue our ways through difficult circumstances we should turn to God for the direction. Samuel did as God instructed and began the process of anointing a new king. The instructions came after the other and required stepwise obedience. Samuel did as instructed until the scene was set to anoint a new king.

God Chooses David: Samuel might have thought God would consider physical status in anointing a new king as in the case of Saul. He was to be careful in his judgement of the man that would be anointed, and shouldn't consider physical appearance but the character (1 Samuel 16:6-11). Likewise, we should be careful in choosing people to fill positions in the service of God. Our choice should conform with criteria God looks at to choose people for His service. These are based on the spiritual condition of the heart. People can be impressed with qualification, position or status of an individual, Only God knows the true character of a person.

All sons of Jesse had passed before Samuel except David that wasn't invited. David might have been considered by his father as unlikely candidate to rule the nation but he was God's choice. Samuel didn't hesitate to anoint David as instructed by God (1 Samuel 16:12-13). Immediately David was anointed the Spirit of God came upon him and was prepared for special purpose.

God Positions David: The Spirit of God had left Saul, giving him over to evil spirits to possess and torment. This represented divine judgement for his rebellion (1 Samuel 16: 14-20). Saul's problem was compounded by his disobedience and unrepentant heart. He suffered emotional distress which came as a spiritual battle under demonic influence. Saul's emotional instability doesn't indicate all emotional problems are demonic in origin. However, David had been equipped with musical skills Saul needed to bring relieve to his troubled soul and mind. God hand was upon David as he was equipped to meet Saul's needs. God equips people with natural abilities that can open doors of opportunities for individuals.

David related with Saul with humility in spite of his anointing to succeed him. Saul was so impressed by the character of David that he appointed him to be his amour bearer. He trusted and made David a person that would protect him in times of danger and comfort him when he was being tormented by the spirits. David wasn't curious to succeed Saul, rather he set his eyes upon God for the guidance to emerge king. Lesson texts: 1 Samuel 15:34 through 16:23.

Life in the Early Church
The Early Church depended fully on God and the members related with love and unity which made it possible for Church to be filled with the power of Holy Spirit which enabled them to overcome opposition and spread the good news. Acts 2:42 - They continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of the bread, and in prayer. The followings are discussed: Dynamics of a Healthy Church;Prayerful and Spirit-Filled Community, and Power Demonstrated through the Apostles.

Dynamics of a Healthy Church: The followers acted according to Christ's instruction requiring them to stay in Jerusalem until the outpouring and empowerment by the Holy Spirit. They finally received the promised spirit and steadfastly practised spiritual disciplines - learning God's word, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer which helped them grow in faith and increase in numbers (Acts 2:42-47). Numerous signs and wonders were performed by the power of God in early Church that there was great awe among Believers and non believers. The early Christians were so united, they shared possessions and spent time together in worship and meeting needs of one another. Christians are charged to spread the good news and lead people to God.

The early Church experienced wonderful blessing and growth in spite of the persecution. The believers didn't allow the problems to dislodge and stop them. Rather, they prayed for the boldness and power to be more united, to overcome difficulties and do the work of God (Acts 4:32 -37). In love and unity believers powerfully testified to resurrection of Christ.

Prayerful and Spirit-Filled Community: Christ's followers must understand that opposition against the plan of God is to affirm His sovereignty. It has been stated that Jesus would overcome and bring God's salvation to all people (Psalm 2:1-2). The disciples asked God to give them the power and boldness to witness for Christ and perform miracles of healing and deliverance (Acts 4:23-30). God responded to their prayer by sending out His Spirit to fill and enable Christ's followers proclaim the gospel to the world.

Power Demonstrated through the Apostles: Powerful Signs and wonders of healing accompanied the work of the apostles. Through prayer and laying of hand the sick and those being tormented by evil spirits were healed (Acts 5:12-16). God has been using Christ's followers to perform miracles as they preach His word. Those who were moved by the signs and wonders and surrendered their lives to God were added to the Church. Manifestation of the power of God doesn't guarantee that people would put their faith in God, but it stirs faith of those who believe. Lesson texts: Acts 2:42-47; 4:23-37; 5:12-16.

Preaching, Power and Perseverance
The Early Church possessed and treasured all that was needed to build upon Christ and spread the truth about God's provision for salvation and redemption of mankind without fear. Acts 5:32: We are his (Jesus) witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. The followings are discussed: Lame Man Healed; Christ Preached; Power of God Exhibited, and Persecuted but Persevering in Church.

Lame Man Healed: The works of apostles about preaching and witnessing for Christ were backed with power and divine authority. Miraculous signs and wonders followed proclamation of gospel as foretold by Jesus. One of these is healing of a man that was lame for many years. News of his healing was widely spread and many were surprised, knowing he was healed in the name Jesus (Acts 3:1-11). The man jumped and shouted of joy over the miraculous healing that caused bystanders to tremble and watch with amazement. Peter's action exhibited the gift and work of Holy Spirit in believers. The Holy Spirit empowers followers of Christ to proclaim the gospel, heal and deliver people from bondages of the devil.

Manifestation of the presence and work of God gives believers boldness to spread the good news. Peter used the opportunity of the healing to speak and call people unto Jesus, the Messiah and God's offer for restoration and salvation (Acts 3:12-21). He declared that God had glorified Jesus for making miracles possible in the name of Jesus. He referred to Jesus as the Holy One and the Just who had been sacrificed for sins of the world. Peter also declared that Jesus' crucifixion was according to the plan of God as indicated in the Old Testament. He therefore called on people, including those who crucified Jesus to repent and turn to God so that they could be ushered into the presence of God to receive forgiveness and enjoy times of refreshing.

Power of God Exhibited: The power of God was displayed by the way unfaithful followers were judged. Ananias and his wife, Sapphira thought they could deceive Holy Spirit by telling lies about their action. God's judgement for their hypocrisy was so severe but it passed a message and sent great fear to the people (Acts 5:1-6). God hates and His judgement on sin is so severe. Therefore people should turn to God from their sinful ways.

God's judgement leads to respect. Evidence of God's judgement on sins will make people fear and find it necessary to turn from sin. Sometimes people can be filled with pride and may not consider the need to confess sin and seek forgiveness. In such a situation sins will harden hearts and prevent Holy Spirit from entering and transforming lives (Acts 5:17-32; Hebrews 3:12&13). Some people can deceive others but God can't be fooled.

Persecuted but Persevering: The religious leaders and others were angry over activities of the apostles and Christ's followers that they arrested and jailed the apostles. While in the prison God sent an angel to release them, thus making them to continue preaching the message of new life through Jesus (Acts 5:17-32). The priests and Sanhedrin called for a meeting where the apostles were to be taken out of the prison and brought before them, unknowing that God's angel had released them to continue spreading the good news. Then they received the report that the apostles were inside the temple teaching people. The apostles declared to the religious rulers the need to obey God rather than apologize and stop preaching. Christian can engage in civil disobedience to rules that are against obedience to God.

The Sanhedrin had wanted the apostles to be put to death and their followers disbanded. But one of the Pharisees, Gamaliel stood against such rash action and advised religious rulers to allow the movement to continue, stating that it would fail if it was human effort, but if it was from God nothing could stop it (Act 5:33-42). They heeded the counsel, but beat the apostles and warned them to stop preaching in the name Jesus. The apostles found it worthy to obey God, suffer for Christ's sake (Mathew 5:10-12) and persevere in faithful service of the Lord. Lesson texts: Acts 3:1-26; 5:1-11, 17-42.

Living and Dying for Christ
Good character, righteous living, the power of Holy Spirit and steadfast faith are required to hold onto Christ from the time of one's salvation to death. Acts 6:8 - Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. The followings are discussed: Empowered to Save; Falsely Accused, and First Christian Martyr.

Empowered to Serve: The Early Church was growing larger as new members were being added. It got to a time when spiritual leaders and facilities were no longer adequate to meet needs of the people. Seemly uneven distribution of aid resulted in complaints by the Grecian believers against Hebrew believers (Acts 6:1-7). The apostles offered sensible solution to the controversy by asking the followers to appoint men of impeccable character that would oversee and make provision for physical and spiritual needs. The seven men chosen were prayed for and assigned leadership roles. The roles of deacons in churches today should be same as the chosen leaders of the early Church. Deacons are expected to be spirit-filled believers, support pastors and use their God-given talent to advance the cause of gospel.

The work of the first deacons didn't end in meeting physical needs, the men were effective in other areas of the ministry. Stephen was dignified by great wonders and miracles done through him (Acts 6:8 ). He was full of faith and enabled by the power of Holy Spirit to boldly proclaim gospel and perform miracles. God is willing and will release His Spirit for believers to minister and confirm his word with miracles (Mark 16:17-20).

Falsely Accused: Stephen's ministry was challenged in the synagogue as he was presenting Jesus and giving the accounts of persecution of the Old testament prophets. Some Jewish people felt guilty of his presentation that they wanted him dead (Acts 6:9-10). They alleged that Stephen contravened the law of Moses, said Jesus would change the custom and therefore should be put to death (Acts 6:11-15; Leviticus 24:16). Stephen was unruffled by the Council's decision over the false charge against him. There was peace within him as his face appeared as the face of an angel. God will uphold those who rely on Him in the times of trouble (Luke 12:11-12; 1 Peter 2:20-23; Mathew 5:10-11).

First Christian Martyr: Stephen presented a defence which gave the account of Israel's attitude towards the prophets, including the ones that foretold the coming of the Messiah (Acts 7:51-54). They were so troubled by Stephen's word and ground their teeth in rage. Stephen made it known that the people were not better than heathen gentiles for rejecting the prophets and Jesus as the Messiah. Stephen testified to presence of Christ and the glory of God as he was being dragged out to be killed (Acts 7:55-60). He asked Jesus to receive his spirit and that Lord should forgive his murderers. It was recorded that Saul who was later converted and named Paul was part of the Council that approved Stephen's execution.

From Persecutor to Preacher
Just as Christ transformed Saul from wicked to godly person, God can transform and make the worst criminal His beloved child. Acts 9: 15 - The Lord said unto him (Ananias), Go thy way: for he ( Paul) is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. The followings are discussed: Life-transforming Encounter with Christ; Commissioned by Christ, and Preaching and Persecuted for Christ.

Life-Transforming Encounter with Christ: If God could save Saul and use him to fulfil His purpose, He can save those we might have considered impossible to be saved. Saul had continued to deliver the murderous task since execution of Stephen and couldn't be stopped from pursuing, arresting and taking christian in bondages to the presence of religious leaders for persecution (Acts 9:1-2). He was very active in the efforts to persecute Christians and stop the gospel from spreading when the risen Jesus confronted him.

As Saul was going in the company of those assigned with him for persecution of Christians, he saw powerful light and heard a voice from heaven asking for the reason he was persecuting the Church (Acts 9:3-9); immediately he knew it was an encounter with the Lord. Jesus could have smitten and destroyed him but he showed mercy and saved him. The merciful and loving God wants sinners to be saved and useful for His service. Jesus identifies with the sufferings of his followers in the course of spreading the gospel just as he identified with and saved sinners while on earth. The Lord meets and uses people for His service based on their knowledge and understanding of His work.

Commissioned by Christ: The Lord had told Saul where he should go and who to meet for his sight to be restored. Meanwhile, the Lord instructed Ananias to meet and pray for Saul so that his sight could be restored, and to be endued with Holy Spirit for the task ahead (Acts 9:10-16). Ananias was frightened, knowing Saul could arrest and torture him, but Jesus had told him that he had chosen Saul to carry out his mission. Ananias obeyed God's command and went ahead to lay hands on the man that would become one of greatest missionaries in Church history. His obedience made it possible for Saul to receive both physical and spiritual healing (Acts 9:17-19). God used Ananias to restore Saul's sight and help him receive the baptism of Holy Spirit.

Preaching and Persecuted for Christ: Saul demonstrated the sincerity of his decision to serve Christ by preaching boldly in synagogues where enemies of the Early Church had gathered against Christians (Acts 9:20-25). Members of synagogues were surprised and troubled to see Paul's zeal and pursuit of his newfound faith in Christ. Paul justified his teachings that Jesus is the Messiah with Old Testament prophesies. Only Old Testament was available for early Christians to know and hold unto the truth about God's plan to send the Messiah and renew the covenant. Saul's knowledge and understanding of the Old testament helped in his writing and presentation of messages of the New Testament.

The religious leaders made attempts to kill Saul and stop his ministry in Damascus and Jerusalem but he was saved by the believers. Saul couldn't be stopped from preaching the gospel (Acts 9:26-30). He went to places proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah. He preached the gospel in Damascus, Jerusalem and Arabia and then returned to Tarsus (Turkey), his hometown. Saul was dedicated to preaching and sharing the good news anywhere he went following his conversion. Lesson texts: Acts 9:1-31.

The Church Prevails
The Church has continued to grow and the word of God is increasingly spreading in spite of the war the devil is wagging against the gospel. Acts 12:24 - The word of God grew and multiplied . The followings are discussed. Delivered by Unified Prayer; Surprised by Answered Prayer, and Arrogance Judged; the Church Expands.

Delivered by Unified Prayer: Matters that require divine intervention should be taken to God with a strong belief that He will solve the problems. Acts 12 narrated what Peter passed through in the prison and how God delivered him. Herod Agrippa sent him to the prison with the intention of killing him in the public to please the Jew religious leaders and their followers as he did to James, the brother of John (Acts 12:1-4). He was so determined in getting rid of Peter that he assigned 16 soldiers to watch over him; four soldiers were to guard him on six-hour shifts.

The members of Jerusalem Church didn't allow the killing of James to stop them from praying earnestly for the freedom of Peter even though it was glaring that the king was determined to kill him. With resilient faith they so much believed in the saving power of God. They had prayed for days but the prayer was answered the night before Herod wanted him executed (Acts 12:5-12). God sent an angel who took Peter out of the prison and made the soldiers unaware of what was happening. Peter thought he was dreaming until the angel led him to the street of Jerusalem and left him to go alone. God is still at work and will answer earnest prayer of the righteous. Christians today must follow the example of the early Christians to keep on trusting God and believe He will answer prayer.

Surprised by Answered Prayer: The believers were so surprised by the way God answered their prayer. Rhoda recognized Peter's voice and was so excited that she went to tell others about his arrival. While others doubted and couldn't believe her faith did not waver (Acts 12:13-15). They said Rhoda must have seen Peter's angel, thinking he had been killed. This kind of belief was according to tradition; it wasn't established in the Bible. God used Peter's miraculous release to strengthen the early Christians who had grappled with life-threatened challenges from enemies of the gospel. Whatever the challenges Christians are to depend fully on God. He is able to deal with the evil and see us through difficult circumstances.

The Christians testified to God's faithfulness for answering their prayer when they saw Peter waiting at the door. They were full of joy and celebration for answered prayer. Peter didn't see his release as a miracle that should be taken for granted. He was cautious of his stay in the house of the believers and movement through the city of Jerusalem so that he would not be easily pursued and arrested again by the enemies (Acts 12:16-18). Christians must not abuse God's saving grace as they walk through dangers and remain persistent in sharing faith with others.

Arrogance Judged; the Church Expands: God has several ways of dealing with people and getting rid of enemies of His people. Saul was a persecutor of the people of God before Christ met, saved and used him for God's work. The King gave the order for execution of soldiers who guarded Peter but were not aware of his release (Acts 12:19-23). While settling a political dispute Herod couldn't caution the people who were hailing and praising him as a god until an angel of God struck him down. It was recorded that maggots were coming out his body before he died of severe pains. It is sinful for anyone to claim God's authority. God is sovereign and will judge any person claiming His glory.

God empowered the early Church and blessed early Christians for their unwavering faith despite various attacks. Christ had stated that he would build his Church and the gate of hell will never prevail against it. Enemies of the gospel might be trying all they could to stop the Church and greatly increased their evils close to Christ's return but they would not succeed. All that is expected of the Church is to be alive in Christ and active in spreading gospel to save lives. The Church will continue to prevail as we spread the gospel. Lesson text: Acts 12:1-24.

Psalms of Thanksgiving
We owe God thanksgivings and praises for his goodness, love, mercy, grace and provisions in our lives. Psalm 118:1 - O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: because his mercy endureth forever. The followings are discussed: Thankful for God's forgiveness, Thankful for God's Compassion, and Thankful for God's Enduring Mercy.

Thankful for God's Forgiveness: The Psalmist recognized the ups and downs that characterized his life because of his sinful condition but later on appreciated God for forgiving and restoring his life after repentance. He understood that harbouring and living in sin would result in painful and sorrowful lifestyle (Psalm 32:1-5).

The Psalmist points out that God answers prayer of someone who has repented of sin, turned to God and living in obedience. God answers prayer of a person that has unhindered access to Him. Such person will approach God with confidence knowing that He would secure his life and provide for needs (Psalm 32:6-11). God wants peace of mind and good things for those who turn from their rebellious attitudes to life of righteousness and obedience.

Thankful for God's Compassion: The Psalmist appreciated God for responding to his situation. God met his needs and delivered him from troubles that could have caused moral failure and spiritual death (Psalm 116: 1-11). He could have fallen for his limitations and deception of people, but was saved as a result of moving closer to God and experience of His faithfulness.

Psalmist asked a question about how to repay God for His benefits. Old Testament people would offer different types of sacrifices and offerings to express gratitude to God for His goodness. They would even pay vows publicly to show their joy and disclose what God had done (Psalm 116:12-19). The Psalmist noted that whatever happens, even if it is something painful should not destroy relationship with God and the joy of serving Him. Christians have learned to present themselves as a living sacrifice to God from the time Christ's sacrificial death had replaced burnt offerings.

Thankful for God's Enduring Mercy: Here the Psalmist appreciated God concerning proofs of His mercy. He revealed that God will uphold and see a person who depends upon Him through storms of life, even if such storms come as crises from a national leader (Psalm 118:1-21). The Psalmist also appreciated God for the promised Messiah that would come in His name. The One that would reveal His way and bring His salvation to the world. We should continue to appreciate God for His goodness in the past, the present and future provisions. Lesson texts: Psalm 32:1-211; Psalm 116:1-19; Psalm 118:1-29

Psalms of Praise
We magnify for what he has been doing in our lives and express his sovereignty as the One that fills the heaven and earth through Praise. Psalm 66:8 - O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be known. The followings are discussed: Praise God for His sovereignty; Praise God for Answered Prayer, and Praise God for His work.

Praise God for His Sovereignty: The way God set up the universe and make the system work in a remarkable order is far beyond what man can easily draw conclusion. A solution leading to another problem will always be arrived at as we try to investigate the work of God. The power to make or cause something to happen belongs to God. When Psalmist considered God sovereignty he was just praising Him for His mighty work and perfect character (Psalm 33: 1-9). The Psalmist opens our hearts to the creative power of God, and to recognize Him as the Source of everything in existence. Modern discoveries and inventions point to creative power behind existing things and systems that work. Man is the brain behind technological advancement just as God is the power moving the universe.

God will give us the power to understand and overcome the work of evil as we move closer to Him in trust and obedience. Whether as a nation or individuals God want people to recognize and draw close to Him because He that sees the hearts and know what people think. The power of God still work for believers today to triumph over evil just as it worked for children of Israel and gave them victories in numerous battles (Psalm 33:10-22). Circumstances that will threaten our faith will surely come but we shall overcome by relying on God.

Praise God for Answered Prayer: Psalm lead us to the mood of praise even if answer to prayer is yet to be received. The essence of doing this is to elevate God and make His desire a reality. If we are able to achieve this God will be pleased to answer our prayers (Psalm 66:1-12). Psalmist make us to understand that God will visit and solve problems of individuals as He intervened and solved problems confronting His chosen nation. Because God judges individual and nation's sins believers must not relent in the effort to call people to repentance and lead them to God's presence where there is forgiveness and mercy, and where problems can be solved through divine guidance ( Psalm 66:13-20).

Praise God for His Work: Psalmist praised God for he is willing to meet spiritual needs and redeem those putting trust in Him from destruction. He made reference to God's love, patience and forgiveness as what motivate God to withhold punishment for our sins and draw Himself closer to us (Psalm 103:1-12). Christians must not loose sight of the benefits of serving and appreciating the work of God. Psalmist also made it known that we become children of God when He has forgiven us our sins, and when we are connected with His eternal purpose, having His love in our hearts and acknowledging His works. Psalms 33:1-22; 66:1-20; 103:1-22.

Wisdom Psalms
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and someone that lives by the Word of God is a wise person. Psalm 128:1 - Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that worketh in his ways. The followings are discussed: Choose righteousness; Avoid Sinful Living, and Establish God Centered Home.

Choose Righteousness: The psalmist describes three levels of participation in sin which seems to be attractive and offer personal satisfaction; but they are set as a trap and lead to spiritual danger. Righteous living is all about keeping God's word in ones heart and meditating on it day and night (Psalm 1:1-3). Christians can become righteous by prayerfully and faithfully studying God's word and obeying what it says. Psalmist describes those who are righteously following God as a tree planted by the river side and which bears fruits in season. This points to God's care and promise for those who make the word of God foundation of their lives and build upon it.

A different experience was described for those who are wicked and separated from God. It is stated that they are like chaff that would be blown away by wind. In order words they are not desirable in God's presence and all their accomplishments will be temporarily (Psalm 1:4-6). The wicked are preserved to the day of judgment when they shall be eternally separated from God and the righteous. God knows the way of the righteous but the way of the wicked shall perish.

Avoid Sinful Living: Psalm 36 also makes it known that those serving God are fundamentally different from those who reject him. While the righteous seek God's truth and wisdom for living the ungodly dishonor God, make sin part of their lives and believe their own standard of moral living is sufficient for a perfect living (Psalm 36:1-4). Willpower and moral discernment are not adequate to defeat sin and make ungodly person live righteously. Likewise, willpower and moral discernment can not make believers overcome sin and grow in the relationship with God. We should depend on God to overcome sin and experience His faithfulness.

The Psalmist talks about God love for all people irrespective of their spiritual condition. He declares that those who reject God would eventually be treated differently (Psalm 36: 5-12). God's love and blessings are promised for those who have personal knowledge of God and follow His way, but those who reject God would face destruction.

Establish God-Centered Home: Homes are expected to be built on God and children trained the way of God because the first family was instituted by God. Whatever comes from the family good or bad flows into the society and will have influence on the nation. Psalmist observes that happenings in the nation can be traced to family responsibilities and calls on the people to trust God and do good (Psalm 127:1-5).

Heads of families are encouraged to commit their works to God through prayer and depend on Him for success and peace in the homes. Children are the blessings to a family and must be taught that they belong to God, and must be useful for His cause. There must be unity in the family and members must fear God to experience the blessings of fruitfulness, multiplication and peaceful living (Psalm 128: 1-6). These psalms highlight the basic principles for living as wise people. Lesson texts: Psalm 1:1-6; 36:1-12; 128: 1-6.

Covenant Psalms
God's word is to be passed down to generations for the people to keep on referencing God, know about His purpose and appreciate His work. Psalm 78:5 - He (God) established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children. The followings are discussed: Serve God Only; celebrate God's Faithfulness, and Teach Truth to Succeeding Generations.

Serve God Only: At various occasions God warned His people to not leave Him and follow after worship of idols. God's warning sometimes came as a plead to the people to flee sinful acts because such acts would corrupt them morally and spiritually, destroy individuals, families and even the nation (Psalm 81:8-12). The warning was to help the people reject the path of destruction and do what would make them receive God's blessing and experience divine intervention.

On the call to return to Him, God implores His people to follow and walk in His ways as obedience to this would bring blessings and lead to victory over the enemies (Psalm 81:13-16). Because God's warning hold true today people are enjoined to seek the Lord while He may be found and call upon Him while He is near (Isaiah 55:6-7). God shows mercy and forgives sins but will judge those who continue in disobedience.

Celebrate God's Faithfulness: God is faithful to His plan for establishment of a New Covenant through the root of David. The Psalmist celebrated God's faithfulness for the New Covenant that would be fulfilled and which would make it easier for the people to experience true love and mercy of God Psalm 89:1-18). It is obvious that Davidic Covenant through David seed for all generations has been fulfilled through Jesus Christ. God is to be feared and referenced for being truthful to His covenant, and for His power to show mercy and do justice. God should be praised for His power over the creation and love for His people.

Teach Truth to Succeeding Generations: Verses 1 to 3 of Psalm 78 implores people to listen to teachings and meditate on the word of God. Teachings may be presented in parables and often make idea clearer even if it is hidden below the surface. Jesus often made unknown or hidden things known through teachings in parables using ordinary things people could readily see around and understand.

People are encouraged to pass God's word and command down to generations by teaching children. God's wonderful deeds and testimonies from those He has used to declare His work must be made known to the next generation. In order to achieve this Christians must teach their children the scripture and show them how to trust and obey God (Psalm 78:4-8 ). The scripture reveals the love and power of God, and teaches people the ways of God. Each family and the entire church must be actively involved in teaching the next generation to know and serve God. The scripture reminds us of fulfillment of God's covenant, work of Christ on earth and God's plan for the future.
Lesson texts: Psalm 78:1-8; 81:8-16: 89:1-18.
