Shitface:

After the late bishop passed on, prayers were made and three people selected to become bishop of the diocese.
All of this people were completely ignored and through whatever means, Okpaleke was appointed as bishop. A priest who has never worked in Aharia.
Remember, even in the appointment of a Pope, procedures are observed.
This caused the outrage of the people, who saw it as an insult on all the priest in the entire Diocese.
The people were those who protested.
People are bending information and painting the entire diocese black.
GOD IS WATCHING.

Read your scripture again, St. Paul wrote: "All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose". In spiritual matters where we pray and believe the Spirit moves and motivates actions, nothing happens by chance. They happen the way God wants it. Our is to resign and see where God is leading. People of Ahiara diocese should accept God's choice for them. The church won't make any change to accomodate their petulance. If that happens a bad precedence of ethnic and tribal rivalry will be set in the church. In church, there is neither Greek nor Jews but a people baptised into a common faith. People should learn that it is all these primodal instincts Christianity came to set them free from. When the Son of man set you free, Jesus said you shall be free indeed. Note the word 'indeed'. That's true freedom.

Imagine discriminating against a priest just because he is
not an indigene even though he is igbo.

What a shame.

Have you been fortunate to read that allegorical short piece but priceless novel by George Orwell title ANIMAL FARM? Anybody who is able to understand that novel will surely have insight into the world of mankind.

TO BE HONEST WITH ANYBODY THAT CARES TO HEAR. IF BIAFRA SHOULD BY CHANCE STAND ON ITS OWN, THE WORST OF DISCRIMINATION IS WHAT WILL BE EXPERIENCED IN THAT COUNTRY OF OSU OUT-CAST. PEOPLE LIVING IN SELF DECEPTION.

Let me suggest that the Priest should just port to another church if they truly want to protest and protect the interest of our Mbaise people. After all, the entire church can move to Anglican, Methodist, etc or form a new church with the population of their members. They should abandon the church for the Bishop and Pope.
We are talking about local content isnt it?

In rural churches the indigenous language does matter a lot. My personal view is that the origin of the Priest doesn't matter but since this is a rural area he needs to be able to communicate with the natives. There is also this complaint of not allowing Mbaise born Priests head Awka area which can be eased off by just appointing an Mbaise to preside over Awka to promote unity.

Catholic is universal is not about speaking a dialect or local language of Mbaise. Ethnic and Tribalism plus religious bigotry is the trade mark of Easterners even in the house of God.

Mechie eze ure gi this poor old animal. Where has it been recorded that an Mbaise snake was not accepted to head a church in any part of Anambra? The current VC of UNIZIK is an Mbaise man even when we have millions of over qualified people already. I think this has to do with exposure and metropolitan and insecurity and complex.

100% of Imo state residents are all Imolites, whereas convserse is the case in Anambra where there's diversity of people from different states and culture. It is equally an insecurity issue because Mbaise people and Imo state at large felt intimidated moreso when the oldest and only Roman Catholic Cardinal is an Anambran- Cardinal Arinze, and they felt it is a connection thingy but it isn't because Pope Benedit appointed Dr. Okpalaeke on merit and not favoritism. Anambra, Onitsha precisely is the headquarters of both Catholic and Anglican because that was the first place the missions berthed in the entire eastern region. It is common for the area to host more qualified persons to head the church than other places, hence the appointment from the area.

Well the current Pope Francis had laid the matter to rest as the Anambra born Dr. Okpalaeke has been endorsed as the Bishop of Mbaise and nothing can change that or Mbaise people risk the Papal consequences. Nuff daid.

I don't understand the way some of our Igbo brothers always try to bring Tribal sentiments into every issue, first it was one of our brothers asking why Igbo churches have "lower patronage" of non igbo speaking members in thier church in contrast to the Yoruba churches in the other thread to why they have no high ranking service chief in the millitary and other security forces to this story.

I just hope the republic of biafra if eventually granted wont be characterised by too much tribal bigotry.

As for the priest, it is a shame that they have also been affected by the low self esteem affecting some people in the country, the Catholic church is a universal church and as such, any priest can be appointed as the ordinary of a diocese not minding the diocese or tribe. The Church has outgrown tribal sentiments and that is why an Argentine(Pope Francis) can become the Bishop of Rome.
Even in Nigeria here, it is not so uncommon for the holy see to appoint somebody from another diocese to be bishop of another diocese.
That is why Bishop John Ayah from Ogoja diocese, Cross river is bishop of Uyo diocese.
Bishop Callistus Etokudoh from Akwa Ibom is bishop of Port harcout
Archbishop Augustine Akobeze, a igbo man is Archibishop of Benin Archidiocese
Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama(CBCN President) from taraba is Archbishop of Jos.
Very Rev fr John Keane, a white man is Administrator of Bauchi Diocese.
Francis Cardinal Arinze from Onitsha Archdiocese, Anambra is a bishop in Italy
Bishop Michael Olatunji Fagun from Ondo diocese is Emeritus bishop of Ekiti Diocese.
Bishop Francis Alonge from Ekiti Diocese is Emeritus bishop of Ondo Diocese.
Bishop Senan O'Donnell, a white man is Emeritus Bishop of Maiduguri.
Bishop Timothy J. Caroll, a white man is Emeritus Bishop of Kotongora Vicariate.

Even their very own John Cardinal Onaiyekan from Ahiara diocese, Imo state is Cardinal in Abuja and no case of insubordination has been reported.
Bishop Okpaleke should and won't be an exception in the universal Church.

The priest involved should forward their apology letters to Rome as directed by the Pope for the good of the Church in Ahiarra and the world as a whole.

Our Igbo brothers and friends should try work on themselves and overcome the tribalistic nature of some of them, that is when they can truly achieve greatness in Nigeria or in Biafra.

You are getting things wrong here. The "homily" is useless if the language used is not popular among the worshippers. In Owerri, Benin, Enugu, Akure, Uyo, Yenagoa etc it is normal for anyone to preside over as they are cosmopolitan and not rural. Can Okpaleke even understand Mbaise? That's my own view though but beyond that there is underground politics involved in this whole brouhaha.

2ndly Igbo Churches do not have low patronage. The truth is that Yorubas and Edos started the Pentecostal Church scam earlier than Igbos but today Igbos have founded faster growing Churches with better welfare.

Try not to use the language as an excuse because it is invalid.

Missionaries led the church in Nigeria for several years and to the best of my knowledge, there was never a protest as regards them not connecting to the people because of language barrier.

Very Rev Fr Keane, Administrator of Bauchi diocese that include Bauchi and Gombe states, two states that should be have complained of language barrier.

Bishop Ayah by your judgement should not have headed Uyo since he is from Ogoja, a community where the use of Efik is very limited even though Ibibio is the language spoken in Uyo.

The Church is a body and the priests should know that they are part of this body. Staging a public protest is a clear case of insubordination. Don't try using language to justify it.
