touch_me_hard: [size=14pt]I've been in this kind of situation before, working where I'm well paid and all that, yet i didn't like what I was doing and the job satisfaction was less than 20%. Since you are still young, I will advise you to follow your heart, but make sure you use your head while following your heart. Instead of starting allover again, you may build up on something similar to healthcare delivery, like someone suggested, in Sports, physiotherapy, health administration or health insurance.
But if you are totally not interested in anything healthcare related, just go for what you really want. You are too young to have an unfulfilled career life. It could cause depression for you.

if there is money, do what you like

I think You shuld follow your heart. Medicine is great but petr engineering is greater in terms of opportunities. Also being that you don't have a passion for medicine,so pls do go for what you want. Thank God you are still very young and so an additional 4 or 5yrs in pursuit of ur happiness is not a waste of time @ all but a brave move, So pls go for it!

gbosaa: I thought he said it wasnt about the pay,i think he should follow his heart..Not everyone is cut out for doctors job..I know a guy who got distinction in physiology and biochemistry in his 2nd MBBS exam, started clinicals but stopped after smelling dettols and izals and seeing lots of sick people in the clinics. He just decided medicine wasnt for him.
He switched over to physics and started from 2nd year.

Forget all the tripe about "I dont have a passion for" In this days people just do what can pay the bills

If your passion is playing Video games would you make a career out of it.

Most of the times we all just endure and get it done to pay the bills.

I know one girl who was very brilliant got into one of the best schools in US for Petroleum Engineering later she dropped out that she didnt have a passion for it, went to study sociology, graduated with a perfect GPA yet cant get a job while all her engineering colleagues were copping 60k-70k jobs she is getting 25-30k offers.

With student loans hanging and bills to pay she is now telling me she should have listened to me and stuck with the Engineering

If you claim its all about passion, Can you do your present job if you are not getting paid for it?

I need to know a few things before I can make a suggestion:

1- who sponsored you through medical school
2- who is going sponsor you through 5 years engineering course
3- what about all the specialties in medicine: prosthetic medicine (no blood here), orthopaedic (bone and blood)
radiology (no blood), psychiatry, public health they're so many and if you're abroad...
4- what do you want from engineering salary

Bros,it seems you're a rich kid. Get your folks to send you abroad and go specialise and start making good money!
Engineering etc = zombie around.
Make progress and build on your foundation (medicine which you spent a minimum of 6 years to study)

annoymous: I'm a 25 yr old medical doctor who recently concluded the compulsory one year NYSC. I am not particularly happy with medicine and I think I only became a doctor due to family/environmental pressure. I have a fairly nicely paying job so it ain't about the pay.

I'm going for a Masters in Public Health this fall in a highly reputed university and am now thinking of starting over. write the SAT, and go back for a first degree in petroleum engineering.

I want a job I'll be happy doing for the rest of my life. better late than never, I guess. what are your thoughts? thanks a mil

OP do what makes you happy. Don't be miserable for the rest of your life. Have no regrets. Nah you get your own life.

Per the uncertainty of getting a job in the P.E field, you will never know until you get there. If you stand out, you will make it. Where there is a will, there is a way.

P.S what is your own definition of success? As far as I'm concerned, the most successful people are those who do what they want to do and enjoy doing it.

Plus one. You can have passion for anything, once you don't have any need for money.
Passion doesn't pay bills grin

All those one na small pikin yarn , Say follow your passion. Would passion pay bills?

If your passion is to learn Latin then you go spend $50,000 learning Latin or Library science, or Music/Dance or Romance languages

Better find the careers that are lucrative and tailor yourself towards, if you follow passion and lead your life into a dead end career na you sabi that one

My broda, pls gø̲̣̣̥ for d pet engineering. Since u re writing SAT, I guess it should be in d USA. Medicine and Engineering are two parallel line. †ђξ former involves a lot of reading while d latter involves calculations. Most people are gifted in either ways. Embassy won't give u visa if u want to gø̲̣̣̥ for a new degree dats y u chose MPH I guess. Its a nice decision. Ride on. See u in US

@ anonymous,
You're 25yrs, still young, you have a whole life ahead of you. The last thing you want is to be in a career that is depressing you.

Let me tell you something about healthcare, if its not from your heart. . . . . . . . . RUN AWAY FROM IT!!
It's hectic, if you thought medical school was rough, try a life of a doctor. I can't narrate here how life as a doctor could be( I don't wanna discourage young medics) but you can only do it if its from your heart.

At 25 it's not late to start afresh IF YOU HAVE TO!!
A career you don't like can reduce your lifespan and send you to an early grave. It's like marrying someone you don't like. Hell will seem better.

So think well if you really need to start afresh, and if you do, it's not too late to start afresh. I've seen people in their mid 40s starting afresh. Not kidding.

I wish I was 25 grin

I no know book:

When will stop schooling? It is now time for you to go make the money. If you no longer like being a doctor, go into entrepreneurship. People waste a lot of time in school these days, and by the time the realized it, time has gone by. Life is too short to be wasted on an unending academic pursuit. Mind you, I'm not saying that education is not good, it is very good and important. You have done your bit already by educating yourself, now go make the money.

Sat is secondary school level, not sure why he needs sat when he claims to have a medical degree.

Of course, could be the usual nl tales by moonlight where some touts claim all sorts of things.

Don't be too quick to jump to that conclusion.
The guy most likely studied in Naija, and does not know much about the requirements to study an undergraduate degree in the States. Also sounds like he is just thinking about it and hasn't done anything in that direction.

Milito: My Brother I understand how you feel. A lot of people at one time or the other have been in your shoes and have come out of this kind of situation better focused and more equipped for life.

Instead of going out-rightly for another degree in Pet Engineering which will cost u a lot in respect of time, energy, finance & your emotions sef. Just try and do a MSc in a field that relates to Medicine but not to the core.

You may consider MSc. Occupational Health and Safety. After doing that coupled wt some other professional courses in Health, Safety and Environment, you may still find yourself in the Petroleum industry or any other industry/manufacturing organisation.

Going back to do another Bachelor's degree after studying medicine for so many years is going to stress u out especially if u are in Nigeria. I pray it should not go and break u sef sad . Doing it abroad may be less stressful.
Ds is very good advise here.
@poster I know how u feel, cos I feel the same way.I jst finished service too and am soo not into d whole clinic thing, infact,by 300 level I knew I dint wna practise.I also know a lot of doctors with like minds but who are worried about what other ppl think and so dy jst stick with it. I am goin for an MSC occ health, safety n evironment this sept. Dts my way of leaving d clinic behind yet doin sometin I like and profitable at d same time. Why go ahead with mph if u dnt really care about medicine to d point of starting and Engineering course from beginning? I would advise u not to waste ur money, rather look for. An msc more inclined to what you like/want,consider this option well before starting afresh.
All in all, don't let what ppl will say deter you from making yourself happy.

He needs SAT for entrance into an undergraduate program, which is petroleum engineering, he stated above. In between, a good grade in SAT can get him full scholarship.

He probably want the SAT because of the scholarship gain. His parents may probably not support his pet eng. degree, hence an avenue of looking for solution to paying the tuition

Ok, passion doesn't pay the bills. But at least you should love what you're doing. How will you perform or do a great job if you don't like what you're doing?

He said he doesn't like the course, I think there's nothing wrong in starting all over again. If he should go fully into that field, because of money and he doesn't love what he's doing, I'm sorry man, he might commit a big murder.

For your friend, you said she's a brillant gal, but she hate pet engr. Don't you think she might graduate with poor results and with that she will regret for studying the course? And that might her affect her big time.

Since, she opted out by herself and changed her course of study, I guess she will be happy with that. Even if she's earning a lil pay for now, that doesn't mean that's how things will be for life.

I want you to know that what really matter in life is happiness. Not all the time, money. Yes, money is important and it's used in supporting life.

What we see from the outside is usually not what it is when one gets to the inside. I am concerned that you've been way too long on the inside to know how medicine works, you should have fallen in love or developed love for medicine through the many years of perseverance and study - or could it be you bought your way through medical school and now afraid of defending your cert?
If NO, then go find out how you could love the course you spent a good number of your years on earth studying, don't use other people's story as a basis for switching. It may not work for you, and if it happens, I can only think of one word in the end - FRUSTRATION.

If the solution involves thinking you have to go back to secondary school level after getting a degree in medicine, then its either the med school he attended is questionable, or its just a case of nlers and their devious habit of using other people's stories online.

If you don't go after your passion you will forever regret your life. Better to do it at 25 then 45 like one doctor I know in the States that left medicine to start export business.

The urge for personal gratification will always haunt you until you live your passion.
Life is about being happy not about making money when you are happy with what you do everything else falls into place.
Be yourself never imitate. Trust what your spirit is telling you and let go of the fear or discouragement. God gave us intuition (gut feeling) to lead you to your destiny!

That is the prob which getting into school too young. When did you get into school. 15 Nuffin wrong which studying engineering but my guy don't u think it's too late U're confused. U knw what I've noticed? There is nuffin u cannot build a passion for. Following ur heart won't pay ur bills.Ok now you're 25 yrs just like me. And even if ur parents have all the money in the world, whatever "dreams" or "passions" you want to follow, YOU MUST FUND IT YOURSELF. If you can do dat then no wahala.

PS: I studied engineering to but some days are not just rosy at all. Besides please find out the average starting salary of engineers in Lagos to Doctors. You will be shocked. Some young engineers collect as low as 40k in this same lagos because they are fresh graduates. Can u persevere And by the time u cme back to Naija u may find it difficult because by then u might be like 29yrs. Plss check the ages specified for most recruitment now. Some specify as low as 24yrs. Recruiters want young sharp entry level engineers and not a 30yr old entry level engineer. And most pple always talk of the success stories of those who followed their "dreams" what abt the more numerous pple who ended up worse off

All in all nothing is certain.

I'm happy for you. You've made the right decision at a relatively young age.

It's understandable how we can succumb to family/external factors when choosing careers. But keep in mind that whatever decision you make, you're the one that's stuck with it for the rest of your life...long after your parents are gone!
