Work on the long-awaited second Niger bridge has commenced. Wolfgang Goetsch, Managing Director of Julius Berger stated this at the 43rd annual general meeting of the company in Abuja.

Goetsch also said the Federal Government had given Julius Berger a letter of intent, which would enable it to do preliminary work such as, soil testing and engineering design.

According to him, the bridge is to be built under the private public partnership arrangement.

Goetsch said: “A consortium that included a company from South Africa participated in the bidding for the project. In January 2013, our group became the preferred bidder. We are excited because it will be the first of its kind in Nigeria”.

He also said mobilization to site for the construction of the 125-kilometre Lagos-Sagamu road will begin in 10 days.

Five lanes are expected to be added to the road. The Build, Operate and Transfer, BOT, arrangement the Federal Government had with Bi-Courtney Highways Services Limited, had been terminated.

At the annual general meeting, Julius Berger declared a profit before tax of N12.34 billion, for the 2012 financial year, as against N9.93 billion recorded in the previous year.

Profit after tax stood at N8.02 billion, as against N4.41 billion, while the company approved an increased dividend of N2.50, resulting in a total gross dividend payment of N3 billion.

This is a marked improvement over that of 2011 fiscal year, which was N2.40 per share. Retired Air Vice Marshal Nura Imam, chairman of the company, said the performance in 2012 increased by 17.7 percent from 2011.

“This commendable achievement is attributable to a number of factors, including the handover of large-scale projects such as the Admiralty Alexander link bridge in Lagos, the Escravos Gas-to-liquids plant, as well as the completion of a major segment of the Lagos-Badagry expressway and several projects in Akwa Ibom State,” he said.

Hope they would be able to complete it and it would not turn out to be an abandoned project if GEJ is thrown out of Aso Rock to Otuoke? One major problem of change in baton is the successor neglecting the agreement made by his predecessor in order to rubbish his antecedents.

I will strongly advise the federal government to try and deliver this project in record time to encourage other investors to engage government in other ppp infrastructure developments. Ultimately, it will accelerate development and send a positive signal to investors to see nigeria as viable investment corridor.

The title is misleading, the only thing JB did is receive a letter of intent from the gov for winning the Bid. They said they are now doing soil sampling and have just started the engineering drawings /design of the bridge. So Nigerian journalism, tell me how they can start construction of the bridge when they haven't even finished the engineering design construction document? The bridge is months, if not years away from construction.

Misleading titles just to get your website views is pretty low.

Are we going to be paying toll on this too? YES/NO.

We need to know, as that will determine whether or not we rejoice at this development. undecided
Re: Julius Berger Begins Work On Second Niger Bridge by EkoIle1: 4:12pm On Jun 25, 2013
Why is this not a direct contract award with money on the table for JB to build the bridge from start to finish and get it over with? Why is this based on a common letter of intent and tolling on behalf of JB to recoup construction cost?

Basically, JB is building this bridge and not the FG.

What's wrong with their local and National leaders back east? They don't have enough power or influence to make the FG put money on the table and straight award the contract with firm completion date minus tolling and if they must toll, at least redirect the collected tolls to the region for maintenance and other construction activities?

All that aside gan sef, the real joke is the looming capital flight and fleecing of the potential end users of the bridge via decades of tolling with zero returns to the region.

With so much noise regarding this bridge and after years of begging, there's still no serious intentions on the part of the FG and the SE leaders to get this taken care of pain free and on time..

GEJ is Janging SE all over again...

You are going to be tolled because JB is funding the bridge and not the FG hence JB tolling you for decades to recoup their money..

Why do I feel that the relentless criticism and constant comparison between GEJ and BRF actually spurred the FG to start the SNB? It is a curious thought.
