The Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Mr Babatunde Adepitan has answered the lingering question about the ownership of Aguiyi-Ironsi International Market at Ladipo Market in Mushin, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

He spoke on the ground that some people are confused over the ownership of the market.

Adepitan explained that the land originally belonged to Lagos State government and was meant for the establishment of Mushin General Hospital.

He explained that the state government, observing that the environment as a market place, will not be conducive for the intended hospital, decided to change the original plan.

He said that Lagos State ceded the land to Mushin LGA to be used as a market after payment of certain amount.

Adepitan further explained that the council in private partnership arrangement, entered into an agreement and leased the land to a private company called Paramo Development Ventures Limited owned by the late Alhaji Hassan Olajoku.

“The lease will last for 25 years and since then the council left the development and management of the market to Paramo,” he explained.

P. M.NEWS gathered that the market came into existence in 2001 and was commissioned in 2005 by the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Later, crisis erupted in the market and people, mostly traders became confused over the ownership of the market or who should take charge of the affairs in its management.

However, Alhaji Olajoku was assassinated and his son, Ajibade Hassan Olajoku took over the management of the company. Olajoku confirmed the council’s position and explained that his late father, through Paramo, embarked on the process of developing the market and to build it to international standard.

To achieve the dream, he said Paramo sub-leased shops to some traders in the already existing Ladipo Market on individual basis with conditions.

He explained that the conditions include payment of specific amount for allocation of space to build shop on lease basis that will last between 10 and 12 years. Also the allottees should be paying storage fees to Paramo who will pay to Mushin Local Government.

He regretted that since the market was commissioned, Paramo has not been able to collect the allocation money and the fees to pay to the council.

Adepitan confirmed that Paramo has not been able to pay the council millions of naira accruing to it as part of the agreement because they have not been able to enter the market because of the lingering crisis.

He hoped that the crisis will soon be over and the company will fulfil its obligations to the council. He, therefore, reiterated his earlier submission that the market belongs to Mushin LG who leased it Paramo pending the expiration of the lease agreement.

Olajoku commended the Mushin LGA and Lagos State government for trying to sanitise the market, adding that more needs to be done to get rid of thugs in the market for lasting peace there.

The Director of Operation, Paramo Development Ventures, Mr Nath Umezeokoli, while attesting to the position of Adepitan and Olajokun, explained that the agreement on the market was between Mushin LG and Paramo.

This is part of Yoruba problem, right here in bold. We allow Ibo to name markets. We ceded authority over our land to them long ago. Markets should be named by LG. How can you have a Babaloja over Aguiyi-Ironsi Market? Is Aguiyi-Ironsi a Yoruba name?

How many Fajuyi markets are in East? Do they have an Adekunle market in Iboland?

We slept at the steering too long my brothers and sisters. We need an outcry against this practice.

Crap, there are legall constituted bodies that are meant to collect taxes on behalf of the local Government,if the local government want, they can out source the collection to the man,its there palaver,we all know want people are meant to pay not a kobo more, the babaloja is going to collect more than the law stipulated from the traders,if they are so desperate they should outsource the job to him and pay him his commissions.

Isn't there any clause in their agreement about defaults? They claim to make billions everyday and they can't pay their rents?
And they have the effrontery to challenge the appointment of a babaloja!
This must be a joke.

^^^

Meaning the traders are right / correct for not wanting someone to be imposed on them. Let us allow the traders run their market and pay their tax as stipulated by the law.

This is one of our tremendous lapses! How can we name Yoruba market in Igbo’s name? Our accommodating strength is now working against us all.
We need to wake up now and get thing done. Tinubu should fight for his people if he truly genuine about good governance for SW in a situation where Nigeria fail to work.
Ngige once a governor in the state before coming to ACN and his performance is what earned him senator. If you like vote him and if you don’t- that’s your problem. After all, it is your state.
We owe nobody obligation as to whatever policy we adopt in our land. You too go and do your own in your state and encourage your Governor make your state market friendly so that nobody formulate or find yourself scape coat of apt policy.

Somebody is not telling the truth here. From all indications, LG leased to Paramo to construct the shops, they cudnt and had to lease it to Igbos who can. Now I think the problem lies here: what was the agreement btw Paramo and shop owners (igbos). Bcuz from all indications the shop owners hv nothing to do with the LG aside paying their tax. The terms of agreement shud settle this.

Nobody is more open and nomadic like Ibos. Is not in your gene! If you want taxes the marketers will give you but you don't have any right to impose anybody as their leader. If it is Hausa people now, Yorubas will give them Kwara state.

In their own state? on their own land? the Igbos are renting not owners. They can impose any leader they want. Again I ask you where in Iboland do you have a market named after a Yoruba person or a market headed by a non-indigene?

Thank God the agreement had no term specifying any Babloja or whatever, so that one has gone into the lagoon.
Secondly, their are appropriate laws regulating land leases, which prohibit undue interference. The leases could not have been signed under Yoruba Law, but the land ownership laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. All lands belong to the Federal Government, the original occupancy rights belong to whatever company, the immediate occupancy rights by the extension of the lease agreement, belong to the traders. They have every right to occupy what they paid for, for the time they paid for it without undue interference.

So Lagos ceded the land to Munshin LG which owns the market and Munshin LG leased it to Paramo, who then in turn subleased to shop owners...Se confusion. If that's the case, Munshin cannot impose anyone on them because that wasn't stipulated in their contract and more so they were aware when Paramo was subleasing the place for 25years.

Abi oh, very parochial, narrow minded post.
Did Fashola not also recently name an estate after Emeka Anyaoku?
Does that change the fact that the estate is in Lagos?

https://www.nairaland.com/1252391/fashola-commissions-emeka-anyaoku-housing

BTW, why was the LASG involved in closing the market if it belongs to Mushin LGA?
Is it that the LGA is INCOMPETENT?
What happens when you have an incompetent manager, say of a football team?
Do you still keep him for further loss or do you sack & replace him

What is the role of Mushin residents in voting in/out such incompetence at the LGA level?
