African Development Bank Report Is Political - Presidency by Nobody: 11:05am On Aug 12, 2013
In what has become a norm with the Goodluck Jonathan administration to discountenance local and international independent assessments that appear unfavourable to the government, the Presidency on Saturday claimed that the African Development Bank (AfDB)’s report on Nigeria’s poverty reduction efforts was false.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, said the report was “devoid of truth and political.”

The AfDB, in its annual report titled African Economic Outlook, said poverty has worsened since 1996 and through 11 years of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rule.

“The proportion of people (Nigerians) living below the national poverty line has worsened from 65.5 per cent in 1996 to 69.0 per cent in 2010,” the report said.

The PDP has ruled Nigeria since 1999, 11 of the 15 years covered by the AfDB report.

The report follows others by other regional and global organisations including the World Bank that were also denounced by the Jonathan administration.

The World Bank had stated in its ‘Nigeria Economic Report’ released in May that “Poverty rates remain high in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. These rates declined between 2003-2004 and 2009- 2010, although not nearly as fast as would be expected from the pace of economic growth in the country,” the World Bank said in May, 2013.”

“While the officially reported growth rates of GDP well exceed population growth in the country, the pace of poverty reduction does not, this implies that the number of poor Nigerians living below the poverty line has grown measurably,” the report stated.

The AfDB in its report also faulted efforts by the Nigerian government led by President Goodluck Jonathan to fight poverty .

“Nigeria’s prospect of halving poverty by 2015 seems weak,” the report stated.

While questioning the AfDB report, Mr. Abati said that it was inconceivable that AfDB’s report came barely a month after the United Nations gave an award to Nigeria for its efforts at reducing poverty significantly in the country.

He recalled that the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), a UN body, at its 38th Session in Rome in late June gave an award to Nigeria as one of the nations that made significant progress in reducing hunger.

The Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, represented President Goodluck Jonathan in receiving the award on behalf of the government, he stated. Mr. Adesina presented the award to the president during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Mr. Abati said that such a negative report from the AfDB some weeks after the FAO award was “suspicious and laced with falsehood and political’’.

I don't know why this administration feels the need to respond to every single report, as if this is what they were elected to do.

The ADB report clearly covers a fifteen-year period from 1996-2010. To label such a report as "political" smacks of daftness induced by paranoia.

GEJ should stop wasting precious time lashing out at real or perceived enemies and focus on issues of governance.

Deliver on your mandate like you promised Nigerians, or get out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat.

Anytime the @ss of this president is busted, he tells his people it's the work of the opposition and not sitting tight by finding a solution to issues they criticize him for.

He blames any write-up that doesn't support his slow nature on the opposition.
Castigates any statistical data that shows he's incompetent.
Shifts the blame of epileptic power supply on low rainfall in winter and damages from storm in summer...

This government is pathologically averse to criticism and redolent of political puerility. As usual, discountenance local and independent assessments that appear 'Unfavorable'. Engage in empty bravado and point fingers of blame at imaginary enemies instead of outlining the steps taken by government to help Nigerians escape the dungeons of poverty. Are these two reports political as well?

Fools. They think the report was written by Lai Mohammed or El Rufai?
Do they think that the writers have the scruples of an alley cat like Abati?
Everyone everywhere knows this government is a joke.

Well, denial is the first stage of insanity, while acceptance is the last.

I don't know why Dr. Abati is saying otherwise. Is poverty not evident in the country? People are hungry and can hardly feed and this stupid doctor is saying something else. PDP is a failure and APC is already a failure on arrival. We are at a crossroad and we need God's mercy.

What do you expect of and from a government which is afraid even of its own shadow?
Even though this report points to a 15 year window, recall that the PDP has held sway for 14 of those years
GEJ reminds one of Macbeth
Written by Shakespeare between 1603-1607 it is still yet one of the darkest and most powerful tragedies written by man
This man got the presidency by been wily and crafty
The corrosive psychological and political effects produced when deception is chosen as a way to fulfil the ambition for power is now plain for us all to see
You might agree or disagree with my viewpoint, yet without vision the leader[s] will run a country aground
Even the good book says the blind leader will only lead those following into a ditch angry
Read the transformation agenda and tell me if vision inspires you and strikes at your heart
Obasanjo, as much as I loathe his overbearing corrupt nature was right, You can help someone to get a job,but you CANNOT help that person to do his job

Shameless hypocrites. If the report had said otherwise, it wouldave been one of the "transformations" or "giant strides" of the admin.

I bet the report was influenced by APC and the ADB is their affiliate.

For real, anyone who refuses to use his or her brain and decides to campaign for GEJ in 2015 is an ENEMY of Nigeria. This man MUST go!!! This is 2013, time is going. When exactly is Nigeria going to catch up with hitherto contemporaries on the development scale like India and South Africa? The gap is fast widening & people are suffering while the polithiefcians at the top are getting fatter!

This has to stop. Countries like Ghana there have reached a stage where someone with Jonathan's pedigree dare not open his mouth and says he want to contest for the presidency as he can be rest assured that only his immediate family members wil vote for him. its a shame that this man won elections in NIGERIA in 2011 and is also been touted by some to win in 2015. It's absurd really. After Jonathan won in 2011, I was willing to give him a little benefit of doubt that OK o, this man with ZERO record of achievements may actually miraculously surprise us in the presidency but the moment I saw his ministerial list, I lost hope. This man is just INCOMPETENT and is INCAPABLE of leading Nigeria. he coud not do wonders in the smallest and richest state in Nigeria yet we voted him in! Now he's borrowing money that our children probably won't finish paying and yet we are seeing nothing done with the borrowed money. Oh, he has 10 or is it 13 aircraft in his personal fleet....forgot about that.lol. Anyway, Obasanjo deliberately chose him and Yaradua so the old Abeokuta he-goat must be smiling now that yes, Nigerians who said he was incompetent and did not deserve a 3rd term will now know what incompetence and non-performance truly means. I'm sure if Abati and the ministers undergo the simplest lie detector test, he'll echo this widely and even globally acclaimed fact about Jonathan's incompetence.

2015, THIS MAN MUST GO!
