mikeansy:

the political establishment in the democratic party in US and the Labour party in UK supported the War in Iraq because at the time they thought it was in the National Interest to do so!

APC stalwarths put politics over National Interest
Can you post a link to back your claim that the. Democrats supported the Iraq war

All this see no good will take us nowhere, their is no perfect political party anywhere, if not we wouldn't have independents. Let us the few good that we have and build on them. Nigerian democracy can evolve if we help it.

Never knew buhari once lead this country in a democracy

Buhari ENDED a democracy that's my point. You can't say the leader of that party ended democracy in Nigeria and is a political progressive. It's not a matter of see no good. I don't believe these parties are holistically 'bad' but they're not ideological. They're based on tribe and convenience.

If Obama gets booted from the democratic party, he can't join the republicans no matter what. Why? because the parties are based on ideals, and changing parties means you're completely becoming the opposite of who you said you were.

In Nigeria parties aren't based on ideas, they're based on persons, so your party only means those are the people you're allied to. We can't start pretending this is an idealistic or ideal led nation because its not, and if we lie to ourselves we won't understand our strengths or weaknesses.

El Rufai was once PDP, as was a great number of APC members. Rochas Okorocha has belonged to 3 parties in 4 years. In an ideal led system, this could never happen. Nigeria is not a democracy of ideas, it's a democracy of alliance.

@Op, you already got the response you seek, there are no political ideologies among major parties in Nigeria and like someone said, PDP is anything but conservative, and APC is anything but progressive ... How then can you define or determine your position (stand) on non existing platform?

What determines the course or ideology behind a government among the ruling parties is the political will of the elected representatives at various levels, not parties. A comparison of the tenure of Sullivan Chime and his predecessor, Chimaroke Nnamani (PDP), Raji Fashola and Bola Tinubu (ACN) will suffice here.

This is best captured by Adam Smith when he said “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest”.

Except if you guys just refuse to see, i know what to expect from both parties, if you live in an acn state you can expect higher taxes , higher school fees, less Privatisation, some form of state police (lastma and kai), decentralising power and so on compared to pdp states with low tax, lower school fees and so on

I get your drift but to say our parties are tribal is not true. There are well grounded politicians who will never cross carpet, take Fashola for instance, have you heard recent comments by keyamo? You will never find obj in the acn or even gej. So why base our democracy on some fringe members. My point is we are evolving and these parties ideas are getting clearer. Pdp for instance will never allow state police or resources control even decentralising power while acn would not lower taxes or reduce price for education
