The Maryland State Police Department, USA, yesterday confirmed the arrest of the Executive Chairman of Udim Local Government in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Nse Ntuen, for smuggling $82, 000 into the United States without declaring it with the Customs officials both in Nigeria and the US.

Nse Ntuen, was arrested on Friday by operatives of the Maryland State Police Department at the BWI International Airport, Baltimore. According to the Police, he declared only $5,000 before the rest of the money was found in his bag.

He later admitted he truly smuggled the money into the country with the aim to use it as donations at the just-concluded Annual International Convention of the Akwa Ibom Indigenes in the United States and Canada which was held at the Marriot Hotel in Washington, DC on saturday.

He was later released after 5 hours in custody and the money seized.

If a local government chairman can't leave up to expectation by being truthful, you can now understand why these people subject us to rigorous scrutiny. Look at the slowpoke in the pix as if he's advertising a pack of paracetamol.

You would wonder sometimes how a country like Mexico within 20mins drive from a wealthy country could be that poor but that's the effect of corruption on national development and I see no where Nigeria's problem is different. The word is corruption!

What's the monthly allocation of his local government ? How much does he earn and what sort of an elected representative will take scarce resource from a backwater State like Akwa Ibom, to fritter away in the US in the name of donation?

The governor's donation is in the hands of Americans. This is how the governors put the legislatures and lc in their pocket. I'm sure there is one person more in that state that surely needs just a tiny fraction of that money to survive just for today, and will die tomorrow.
