Here we go again, how can someone from another tribe become a member of lagos state assembly without being able to speak their language..? I have many Togolese and Ghanaian friends that speaks fluent yoruba, talkless of my many Igbo friends.
If you opened this thread because an elected candidate might not be able to speak yoruba, you can just ask the mods to close this thread.

If you are not Yoruba and you have these concerns, why not move back to your state?
and if Lagos has more non yorubas in the state, why not rally behind a non yoruba and lets test your theory at the polls?

there are 36 states in Nigeria

The south west if proud of there language . If you are not proud of urs, u should RELOCATE to your state or move to another region that speaks the language u are comfortable with.

no matter how large the numbers of non indigenes are in the SW, (born there or not).YOU are just VISITING.

Gregdcutie: I just got angered now seeing a news on channels tv that whilst the south western governors left pressing issues unresolved to discuss making yoruba the language to be used in teaching in the basic levels of education(like its not already a nuisance as most students in primary and secondary levels of education cant effecively communicate except with yoruba) the lagos state house of assembly has passed a law that henceforth members will on somedays dress in YORUBA TRADITIONAL ATTIRE and conduct house proceedings in YORUBA. And I wondered if they taught of the implications
1. Does it mean that no other tribe can get into the state house of assembly considering the fact that the constitution allows for you to claim indigenship of a particular state after having stayed there for a while which thus allows for active participation in that states politics...#thoughts
Anyways to me and most lagosians that statehouse is just one big joke with the whole members emanating from one party #ACN. They could decide to speak ACN language for all we care. The truth whether you take it or not the yorubas are not half the population of other tribes hn lagos and people will still argue that lagos ownership really can be claimed by any tribe#Fact if Nigeria divides today posterity will judge cause each one of them had a role to play no matter how small....what are your thoughts

My thoughts: rather than venting and ranting like a raccoon with roid rage, you're better off enrolling at an elementary school - to learn how to communicate effectively in English language. I had to get Rosetta Stone to demystify the junk that you wrote up there.

Some of you will end up committing suicide with this unnecessary sense of entitlement in places/people who have absolutely nothing in common with you. If the Yoruba's decide to revive their rich culture/heritage - how does that affect you?

This initiative should be encouraged all over Nigeria!!

The state election is 2015 , bring out your non yoruba candidate and campaign for him. He would probably win. Then have him change the language to anyone you want. are you happy now?

It's never going to be too late, for those who plan ahead. If you can't see the handwriting on the wall that Nigeria is heading towards a place of no-return, then I can't help you, mate. Heaven helps those who help themselves - hence why Yoruba's have started helping "themselves" by laying the foundation for all eventualities.

Anyway, that aside, how many Nigerians can communicate effectively in English language? I dare say less than 1%. And the funniest thing is that, most can't even communicate in their mother-tongue as well. So evidently, no matter how you look at it, cultural imperialism has been a lose-lose situation for African people. However, this initiative would help revive the dying African language/culture - and we as African people need to support it. Truth be told, you can never speak the English language like an Anglo-saxon - but the only ace you have is your language and and it's high time you started perfecting it before you end up like the slaves taken to the new world!

asha 80: Obi Unfolds Measures to Revive Igbo Language
05.28.2010

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, has rolled out comprehensive measures aimed at keeping Igbo Language alive among other languages.

Speaking at the launch of Suwakwa Igbo at the Women Development Centre, Awka, he called on the Igbos to love themselves, their culture and language for their sustenance as a people.

During the ceremony, Obi announced, among others, annual award of N200,000, N250,000, and N100,000 to the three best Igbo students in Secondary Schools in Nigeria.

He also gave cash donations and scholarships (university) to the two best Igbo students in the West African School Certificate Examinations, WASCE – Mr. Kevin Anozie of Holy Child Secondary School, Isuofia and Mr. Chika Echeta of Bishop Onyemelukwe Secondary School Onitsha.

The governor also, during the ceremony, signed into law, a Bill to Enforce the Speaking and Writing of Igbo and Widespread Usage of Igbo Language among Ndigbo in Anambra and Diaspora.
He explained that the law would be enforced and announced the stoppage of giving corporal punishment to students, who speak Igbo in schools in the state.

He also announced that Igbo Language would henceforth be compulsory in all the categories of educational institutions in the state just as English and Mathematics are even as he disclosed that he will send a bill that will make it mandatory for Igbo people to be employed in the state, as a matter of law, must pass Igbo Language.

Obi also announced the building of Chief Ogbalu Igbo Language School at the cost of N50.5 million, for specialised and holiday programmes in Igbo. Alhough he said the money was not in the state budget 2010, but that he would use his contacts to get institutions to help to complete it after having paid mobilization to the contractor.

He named Prof. Pita Ejiofor to chair a five-man committee to work out modalities that will guide the measures to revive the Igbo language.
The leader of Suwakwa Igbo, Prof. Pita Ejiofor thanked the governor for his interest in Igbo cause. Using statistics, proved that Igbo Language is retrogressing and insisted that only Igbos will stop the retrogression.

The President of Ohaneze Worldwide, Amb. Ralph. Uwachue, represented by Dr. Atamuo thanked the governor for his commitment to Igbo cause and the able way he pilots the affairs of the state and asked him to appeal to his brother governors, as the Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum to follow his footstep.

The occasion was chaired by Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe. Over 70 traditional rulers attended, among others from different walks of life

Gregdcutie: so instead of us all making concerted efforts to salvage NIGERIA we all should be saving our tribe. #Fact no tribe will survive this much anticipated revolution so in the end nothing would have been worth saving.
That is a major fallacy. Definitely the major tribes (especially the Yoruba) will survive it if it happens. The only ones I fear for are the smaller tribes and people caught outside their home regions.

However, while Nigeria is still in place ( for the forseeable future it is), It makes sense for the state to pander to its indigenes. The constitutional definition notwithstanding, indigeneship is still viewed on tribal basis and as such it will still be the case.

If you feel aggrieved, you have two options ( besides trying to whip up outrage on Nairaland), sue the state House and get them to reverse their decision OR elect yourself a new leader to kill this off.

Regards.

Don't mind the ibo goat. They even conduct school assembly proceedings using ibo language in South East.

Most official meetings in south east are conducted using ibo language and you dare not object that else, they insult your parents and ask you to go back to your state.

What's there to salvage and who salvages a house built on a shaky foundation, or with structural defects? It's either you demolish the darn thing or vacate it. There's too much innate hatred among the people in that country and trying to salvage it would only continue to stunt the growth, to be honest.

How about renegotiate your co-existence based on the three principles of inter-human relationship: territorial integrity, mutual respect and cultural/social freedom?

I have little patience for circuitous arguments which do little to advance discussions like this.
So here is this deal: reflect on the documents I have attached, to see if you can find the difference between six and half of a dozen.

And who's leading the revolution? That's honestly why I can't stand you lot. Your obsession with Lagos is becoming sickening now. Why are you obsessed with Lagos and Yoruba people? Are you immigrants in Nigeria and don't you have your ancestral lands somewhere in the same cesspit? Why can't you take your obsession and go do whatever the fvck you want there? Yet you wonder why no one likes Igbo's!!
