adaobi123: I hate physics.welcome aunty ada.. Just tell us what u like.. This z a general science thread here's a chemistry question water has a considerably higher boiling point and lower vapor pressure than other molecules of similar or larger molar mass. For example, dinitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), etc. all have lower boiling points and higher vapor pressures than water at the same temperature. How might this be explained? |

Re: SCIENCE GURUS LODGE by Nobody: 5:03pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
I_am_Sylva: Okay. Its something to do with the intermolecular forces in between each water molecule. I think they more forces on h2o than in methane and n2 etc. Abeg correct me if I'm wrong. Also h2o has hydrogen bonds too. |

Re: SCIENCE GURUS LODGE by Nobody: 5:18pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
I_am_Sylva: I would've spoilt this question if I was asked some years back! But make i still try sha Because water forms a stronger hydrogen bonding. Water has two proton donors and two lone pair orbitals which act as acceptors for hydrogen bonds. This means each molecule can form four hydrogen bonds in a tetrahedral liquid. methane on the other hand has no slightly positive or negative parts, so there are no strong molecular attraction. This causes the weak bond and the low boiling point |

My own question! Explain what you understand by the term 'Earth Fault'. |

Mikebis: Can any1 dffrentiate btw law of gravity and aerodynamicswell to the best of my knowledge, gravity deals with air resistance while Aerodynamics deals with the way air moves around things. |
Re: SCIENCE GURUS LODGE by IamSylva(m): 5:30pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
speedyboi: My own question!earth fault is a phenomena that occurs when electricity travels outside an intended path and tries to get to the ground by the shortest route. |
Re: SCIENCE GURUS LODGE by Nobody: 5:35pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
I_am_Sylva: You have the idea. But can you just say it in simple 'practical' term? I didn't ask you to define it. |

What has here turned into? |
Re: SCIENCE GURUS LODGE by IamSylva(m): 5:59pm On Oct 22, 2013 |
speedyboi:close adaobi123:a bit close lemme explain extensively Water molecules are polar due to the polarity of covalent bonds between oxygen and hydrogen atoms, and the bent shape of molecules. Hydrogen and oxygen atoms have different electronegativities (H = 2.2; O = 3.5). The difference between their electronegativities (1.3) creates a strong displacement of charge making oxygen atoms strongly negative, leaving hydrogen atoms strongly positive. The position of hydrogen atoms on one side of thewater moleculemakes that side strongly positive, while the oxygen side is strongly negative. Polar molecules attract each other electrostatically. In case of water, that attraction is strong enough to be called "hydrogen bonding" reserved for polar molecules that contain hydrogen bonded to a small, highly electronegative atom like F, O, or N. Hydrogen bonding holds water molecules strongly to one another preventing their evaporation. This in turn lowers water's vapor pressure (less molecules evaporate), and raises water's boiling point (more energy is required to separate molecules from each other). By contrast, nitrogen (N2) and methane(CH4) molecules are nonpolar in nature, and attract one another primarily with weak London forces due to fluctuating dipoles caused by momentary fluctuations of electron clouds around atoms. In those substances, molecules are not attracted to each other strongly, so they can evaporate easily. This in turn gives those substances very high vapor pressure and very low boiling points. |
