waternogetenemy: Freedom of expression is not absolute, the world over. If u must talk, talk peace and not indoctrinate or incite rebellion/terrorism against the state.

Then freedom of speech is allowed only when you shower praises to the president and his cronies’ right? You forgot that criticism is of bad things/policies of the president, ruler, or government. With your assumed meaning of freedom of speech, the nation will never change.

The problem the African rulers mostly Nigeria have is that they see their Opposition counterparts as enemies instead of co national builders. Anyone who criticizes you is your best teacher and motivator, not all those misleading praise singers who dump you when you have wronged everyone during your reign.

Chasing your oppositions and critics around, shows that you are not sure of your capability in handling the issues in your front. If GEJ after all his human right promises would descend so low in chasing around his critics means that the military regime should not be blamed for human right abuse.

lastmessenger: lets tell the truth nobody will arrest an innocent man and detain him in a democratic setting.i red the report with an informed mind.the truth is this: the main aim of the report is to discredit Gej

So he has been hiding under his bed while texting Sahara reporters to release the reports of his detention just to discredit your gej? Why we have so many dregs and cretin like you in Nigeria is beyond me!

This confirms that these are the people masterminding kidnaps because this is not different from kidnap. Tell them to ask Abacha and his croonies what they achieved through this...Nothing

The rights of Nigerians MUST be respected and the government must be responsible and accountable instead of trying to intimidate innocent intelligent citizens.

If anything do the bro...

and what is the measuring yardstick for rebellion/terrorism
and to say terrorism?

This is wrong in all ramifications. very very wrong.
Jonathan is just like any average nigerian, we Nigerians installed him there as is it paramount that someone must lead us.
He cannot use that post to threaten or intimidate us.

Jonathan must go.

PointB: Let me digress a little.
They say Mr. Okio is an intellectual and the oppressor is the President, perhaps that's why his case has been given voice by our Resident Hypocrite, and his gangs.

When Nigerians were rounded up in the street, sent to detention camps for several months, unceremoniously and wickedly dumped by the foot of the bridge in the dead of the night, these same hypocrites claimed it was just and fair, and that the victims were destitute and derange, because their benefactor - Fashola was the aggressor in chief.

Perhaps since I don't know Mr. Okio from Adam, I could be justified in saying he is a destitute, even deranged, and is currently being rehabilitated in a Federal Rehabilitation center. I could say it with the same ferocity as the hypocrites who defended the deportation saga.

Those who come to equity must learn to come with clean hands.
am sorry ... i dont think you are a fool but you sure think like one

This act ought to be condemned completely otherwise it would become a bad precedence for many more such acts to follow. Every government needs critics to help ensure a balance in actions carried out. It is only a sign of a very desperate, unintelligent and weak leader to use threats, force or detention intimidation to silence its critics.

PointB and his cohorts if you really have a sincere vision for the democray in Nigeria, this act ought to be condemned

nairaman66:

GEJ's boot lickers are everywhere.. Even on NL!

I'm sorry, is nairaland reserved for those who lick the boots of the opposition? Apparently, no one is capable of objectivity anymore. And the poster you quoted made a valid point - one can not commit libel/slander or deliberately instigate rebellion and hide behind the freedom of expression right. One could be charged with treason for the latter. Now, I don't know the content of the material that was published, so I'm not presuming anything but it should be pointed out that even within the law, there are limitations to how freely one can express one's self especially if the expression violates another's rIghts or reputation, national security, public order, public health or morals.

Mr. Okio should take legal action against the authorities for wrongful arrest if he has committed no offence. If a reporter could reach him, I'm sure a lawyer can too. I'm curious to know how they would spin this- our government is audaciously creative with these things, after all a 13yr old boy was jailed for attempted murder because he hauled a pure water sachet at Obasanjo's motorcade. The fact that the incident was considered attempted murder and not vandalism or- if considered extreme - battery or assault, is ridiculous. The courts, just like the police, think they can just intimidate and bully the masses because we are ignorant of our rights and the workings of the legal system. Apparently, there is no room for criticm or protest in our version of democracy but it has to be said that the GEJ administration has been lenient enough to desist from 'harassing' the lot of us that have made "GEJ sucks!" our daily mantra. Not only do we poInt out hIs short comIngs as a leader but, as publIcly as we can, we launch personal Insults and rIdIcule hIs persona and the hammer hasn't dropped. I wonder what Mr. Okio really did wrong.

Activist Demands Release Of Abducted Sylva Associate
Posted: October 28, 2013 - 14:04

By Ola Doifie
A social and political activist, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, has demanded the immediate release of Sir Tonye Okio, a loyalist of former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva. Okio was abducted in Abuja Saturday morning by men of the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) of the Nigeria Police, and taken to Yenagoa where he is being detained over his alleged comments on Facebook, considered unfavourable to the powers that be.

Buokoribo said he was expressing his personal views and not those of any social or political affiliation, including Sylva whom he serves as Media Adviser. In the statement released in Yenagoa to journalists on Monday, Buokoribo described the abduction of Okio and his continued detention as illegal, unfair and unsympathetic. He pointedly accused the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Seriake Dickson, of being the mastermind of what he described as grand impunity.

The activist disclosed that:

1) On Saturday, 26 October, about 15 men, including plain-clothes Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) officials and those attached to the Police Mobile Force (otherwise known as kill-and-go Police), invaded the Abuja residence of Tonye Okio with three vehicles (one Prado Jeep and two Police Escort vans) and forcefully seized him. Thereafter they took his iPAD and the mobile phones of himself and his younger sister;

2) After getting their target, he was taken to the headquarters of the Abuja Command of the Nigeria Police. He stayed with his abductors who claimed they were trying to arrange a flight to take him to Yenagoa via Port Harcourt International Airport. When the flight arrangement failed, the police decided to take Tonye by road. They left Abuja about 4:00 pm Saturday and arrived Yenagoa about 1:00 am on Sunday, 27 October. He was taken straight to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nigeria Police where he is being detained illegally;

3) The Police authorities claim that Tonye Okio will be charged for allegedly writing on his Facebook page recently that an unnamed South-South Governor was recently caught in the U.S. with 5 million USD. Tonye denies the charge;

4) Since his detention, Sir Okio has been denied access to visitors. Police sources say they have been given stern instructions by the Bayelsa State Police Commissioner, Mr Hillary Opara, to deny that Tonye Okio is at the State CID;

5) In addition to the regular police that man the gates of the State CID, the surroundings have been taken over by Mobile Police men, numbering about 10, apparently because of the high value detainee;

6) If Dickson believes he is the said governor alleged to have issues of money laundering in the U.S., he should know what to do as a lawyer. Using the police to harass, intimidate and blackmail a political opponent is indecent. Besides, this action amounts to a privatisation of the Nigeria Police;

7) Sir Tonye Okio served as Governor's Special Representative in Abuja to former Governor Sylva. He is also the Publicity Secretary of the New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) in Bayelsa State. He is a well-known critic of President Goodluck Jonathan over his misgovernance of Nigeria, even though he is from the Ogbia axis of Bayelsa State like Mr President. It is therefore impossible not to read political meanings to his ordeal.

Further Comments on Tonye Okio Following Attached Police Letter

Shall we tell Mr Seriake Dickson and his men of the Nigeria Police that the offence of sedition does not exist under Nigerian laws? The courts expunged it in the second republic following the celebrated case of Arthur Nwankwo versus the State.
What manner of lawyer is Mr Dickson that he does not even know this elementary fact? The people of Bayelsa State are really in trouble with characters like this at the helm of affairs.

This is one of Tonye's Post. I can't see anything bad about it.

*****REVEALED: BOKO HARAM BEHIND ASUU STRIKE

When President Jonathan said there were Boko Haram members in his government, Nigerians were shocked . But come to talk of it; what is the main aim of Boko Haram? Their main ideology is to eliminate western education . Now the Boko Haram members in the government are hardening the heart of the president not to implement the 2009 agreement which they duly signed with ASUU for the strike to be called off thereby killing the highest level western Education in Nigeria.
Is this not Boko Haram at work?

JUST AS GOD HARDENED THE HEART OF PHAROH SO HAS THE BOKO HARAM MEMBERS IN THE PRESIDENCY (KNOWN TO PRESIDENT JONATHAN) HARDENED THE HEART OF PRESIDENT JONATHAN NOT TO ATTEND TO THE DEMANDS OF ASUU WITH AN ULTIMATE AIM TO KILL UNIVERSITY EDUCATION (WESTERN EDUCATION)****

FULL OF TRUTH.

We continue to make the same mistakes from over 50 years ago.. we all have the power to change our destiny but we lazily leave it in the hands of insecure, greedy, tribalistic buffoons just as we are doing presently.. 50 years from now our children will say the same about roger
