In a recent development, a statement credited to the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has it that the striking university teachers are hell-bent on continuing with the 4-month industrial action pending when their "tier 1" demands are met by the Federal Government.
ASUU has insisted not to call off the strike insofar as the Federal government is not yet ready to come to terms with the demands tabled by the union.

ASUU's Demands

1, That the FGN slash the jumbo salaries of politicians and public officials by 50% and reinvest the total sum in boosting the infrastructure in the universities

2, That a 5% tax be levied on annual salaries of Federal civil servants, and to be invested in infrastructure in the universities

3, That the universities be granted autonomy

4, That the FGN honour the provisions of the agreement it entered into with the union in 2009

5, Free tertiary education and re-introduction of students' bursary
