Why Has Gov Akpabio Abandoned The Ibaka Deep Seaport Project? by jazzydee: 4:48pm On Nov 24, 2013
Gov.Akpabio has tried in providing Basic infrastructures within his state by tarring 1200 km of roads in the state within the 6.5 yrs hes been at the helms and is still tarring even more roads as we speak, He has built an excellent e-library, A nice stadium under construction,The ibom tropicana, the ibom airport and many other laudable projects in the state. While his strides in infrastructural development is to be commendable,But the one project which was his brain-child that is capable of changing the financial and economic future of the entire state and region seems to have been abandoned.

Gov. Akpabio has Abandoned The Ibaka Deep seaport project. This is not good for the state and may end up to be the biggest loss for the state during his administration.
Has the gov. lost the anger that drove him to commence the transformation of the state?

If you have any interest on this project what do you think of Akpabio's lack of enthusiasm on this project?

Less than two years to the May 2015 delivery date of the proposed Ibaka deep seaport project, the project has remained a mirage as both the federal and state governments are yet to commence construction work on the project site.

When BusinessDay visited the proposed port site at Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, recently, it was discovered that no concrete job has been done on the port site as the waterfront was solely dominated by fishermen and other businessmen whose main business centres on buying and selling of seafood.

Specifically, no structure was found on ground to show that port project would soon commence at the site. Also, the only road leading to the port site, which is the Mbo-Ibaka road, is currently in a very bad condition. The dualisaton of Mbo-Ibaka road, which the Akwa Ibom State government promised to embark on for ease of cargo movement and to cater for the number of trucks that would be lifting imported cargoes from the port to the importers’ warehouses in other parts of the country, is yet to kick off.

“How can we have a port here when the only road leading to the port site in Ibaka is in a bad condition?” asked Eric Nwachi, an Ibaka-based fisherman, saying the government needs to commence construction on the road to make it accessible for the indigenes of Ibaka community before it can start to talk about the deep seaport project.

However, it was also discovered that a new jetty was built at the proposed port site at Ibaka to enable small craft and ferry boats to berth at the Ibaka waterfront. This is contrary to the view of Idris Umar, minister of transport, and the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), who at different fora told Nigerians that work was ongoing at the Ibaka port project which the Akwa Ibom State government promised to deliver in 2015.

Ibaka deep seaport is a project conceived over three years back by the Akwa Ibom State government to be built in partnership with the NPA. The 15-18 metres draught port was to be situated on a 129-km stretch of land at Ibaka to not only serve the southern parts of the county but also service countries in the Gulf of Guinea, such as Cameroun.

If indeed he has abandoned this project which an not certain, It will be a real shame because of all the project that he has done, this in my mind is the most strategic.

but the article the op quoted is compelling and very recent.

instead of concentration on building a stadium he should have built the seaport which will contribute more to the economy of the state than the stadium.

Am from that area. Akwa Ibom state government should not abandon that project cause it is capable of putting the state as a commercial center servicing the west Africa countries as well as central Africa

Dont come here to display your st/upitidy, hate, and biterness for Godswill Akpabio.
You think your silly write-up here can discredit his high rated performance in Akwaibom?
You stink man.
Bitternes and hate will destroy you o. Was it this your useless post that made him want to build it? Learn to appreciate people for the good they have done.
Akpabios performance is beyond any other governor.
Iadvice you to change your post content and plead with the Governor to remember his promise.

Unbelievable, You fit the definition of brainless sycophant. My post dose not discredit the governor but it question his allocation of scarce resources b/w the stadium and the seaport both are good but which will serve the state better?

I know such critical thinking exercise is beyond your ken, so my advise is for you to concentrate on threads that discuss tonto dike and the likes.

cashkid is back: is the project financed by d akwa ibom state or d federal govt

the project is supposed to be financed by private investor 60%, FG and AKS sharing 40%.
But the state government is suppose to drive the push for finding the private investor and also to get all the other parts working for the progress of the project.
But so far it seems the governor is not as involved in the project as he was 2-3 yrs ago. The question is WHY?

@ emmydeep you are 'too much?' so because your governor performs? so well people must go on their knees to beg him to execute a project which he proposed and for which he might have signed out some few billions of naira. You don't insult people the way you do. All are entitled to air their views. Even in this forum you read peoples' post about God, Jesus. How much more of a mere mortal. Let his performances speak and not the CRUSADE we have on our media.

As a supporter of Gov. Akpabio and one that likes the good thing he is doing in the state. i would like to say that on this issue the governor seems to have dropped the ball.

This project shoild be given #1 priority as he did 2yrs ago, but his enthusiasm seems to be weaning on the project. I know it will be impossible for him to complete a project of that magnitude in just 18months left for his administration. but he should at least begin the construction on that site before he leaves office and also designate that seaport as a priority project for the state such that whoever succeeds him as governor will complete it as a priority project for the state.

Just like akpabio completed the airport that was started by Gov. Attah's Administration.
