@ Funloving,
The problem with people like u is u tend to forget about books after a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree but life is more than that.
Education should be a continuous thing and thatz the thin line between success and failure.
Are u aware these white folks are more concerned about what u can do than those bleeping degrees we Nigerians carry around?

All i am saying here is these degrees are not enough to put someone out of the poverty bracket.
London is the 2nd most expensive city in the world so it aint child's play but its achievable.
One needs to get certified to forge ahead of others cos the competiton out there is fierce.

I know loadz of ACCA certified Nigerians who are making cool dough in UK. These are people that have foresight and they know those degrees can't put them ahead of others and they all decided to add some extra skills to their CVs.

Concerning the contract jobs, as long as u update urself to the demands of the market u can never be out of job.
Its quite challenging but its something i believe most Nigerians can do cos Nigerians are very intelligent but the major problem is laziness.

@ honeycomb,
I think its better u advise ur male friend to cancel his trip back to Nigeria.
Let him save up some money he earns from Royal mail to get certified.
Royal mail's wages cannot get anyone by as the highest salary cannot be more than £10/hr which is kinda low.

Certifications are not necessarily IT/Computer stuffs.
London Underground employs tons of Nigerians who are ready to take their courses and they pay handsomely.
A protection master earns £120-£180 a day with London Underground and their exams aint the most difficult thing to pass.
Most of the exams i have taken here are nothing compared to JAMB in Nigeria so i believe 8 outta 10 Nigerians will get along easily.
End of discussion.

I agree

In the western world, it is about what you can do and not how many degrees you have. I worked with a guy that had no degrees at all and he was a consultant earning over 1000 pounds a day back in 2000. He was just very good at what he did and made himself indispensible.

Do what nobody else is doing. Keep up to date with what is happening in society and trends. Don't bury your head in the sand. As I keep saying, it is a global war for talent and it is only the people that can deliver that will dictate their own terms.

A lot of employers are looking for people that can develop apps using open source, ruby, AJAX etc, or better still can create funky online video ads, you can make a fortune doing that. There is a lot of money going into online advertising. There have been some good threads here on Google Adsense. You even have companies that are looking for Chief Blogging Officers! Other recommended sites are digitalpoint.com and sitepoint.com. Put your thinking caps on. People are even making money within an online virtual community called Second Life (secondlife.com) Believe anything is possible

@ Praetor,
Now you're talking. grin grin

People make loadz of money with brilliant ideas everyday.
A computer whiz-kid from Sweden made over 10 million pounds selling the crazy frog ringtones on the internet which later found its way to TVs.
Crazy Frog ringtone totally dominated all the TV channels and it was fucking annoying.
I am not sure he has a degree in anything. He was just absolutely brilliant.

A few days ago i was reading about a dude who sells socks and gloves in 3 pairs at the price of 2.
The idea is u keep a spare glove/sock in case u lose one out of the two u wear everyday
He has sold more than 10 million items because of this freaky idea.  shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

In a nutshell, one has to really diferentiate himself talent-wise from others to make it in life.
Nigerians in diaspora should think deep and create/invent brilliant ideas and sell it to the world.
Sky is the limit.

We are all living in the times of opportunity.

There is a company that sells mismatched socks (socks of different colours for each foot). They are on course to make $10m this year, ridiculous yes but highly profitable.

Read read read and I don't mean textbooks. Subscribe to business mags, observe and see what people are doing, wearing, saying etc. Opportunity is everywhere.

There is a mobile phone company here called Boost that only targets African Americans. The guy that started it is a white Australian, less than 30 years old and no his father isn't a billionaire. He sold it just the other day for millions of dollars. Why doesn't someone start something like that in the UK?

I don't know about how naijas are in the U.K, but in the U.S i don't think the average naija person is lazy just because he/she is doing menial jobs. What do you do if you are a student and are not allowed to work offcampus, but you do it anyway. or if you live here and don't have valid papers?

Even those IT courses only very few people have a 1000 pounds to invest in those certifications after paying their bills and feeding themselves. don't even compare our plight to Europeans.

Okay you are in the U.S now did you know how many H1-B visas are allocated each year ( the max is 65000) per year so if you are not one of the 65000 you might be on your way home if you stay then you have to do menial jobs on the other hand
The indians, chinese, Nigerians everybody is competing for these 65000 work visas, but on the other hand the U.S government set aside 10, 000 work permit visas for Australians alone. "E3' visa so our journey is different from these white people/europeans/americans.

So please don't come to the conclusion that the average Naija person is lazy just because you see a couple weeds here and there.

Hi,

the visa you talk about (E3) is the investor visa. It's available to everyone but you have to show you have enough money to start a business, have American co-investors, the number of jobs it will generate in the US economy and a track record proving you are a successful entrepreneur in your own country. Apparently $1m minimum.

smiley
Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by zebudaya(m): 11:05pm On Jun 28, 2006
Who is eligible

The E-3 visa is for nationals of the Commonwealth of Australia who wish to enter the US to perform services in a "specialty occupation."

The term "specialty occupation" means an occupation that requires theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge, and attainment of a bachelor's or higher degree in the specific specialty (or its equivalent) as a minimum for entry into the occupation in the United States. The definition is the same as the Immigration and Nationality Act definition of an H-1B specialty occupation.

Spouses of E-3 visa holders are entitled to work authorization.

The US Congress brought good news to many Australians when it announced in early May 2005 that it would designate 10,500 newly created E-3 visas just for Australians.

This removes Australians from the H-1B quota and offers them a visa that is similar, but more flexible. It has some of the elements of an E treaty visa and should be very useful to Australian nationals seeking work in the US.

http://www.workpermit.com/us/investor_e3.htm. You don't have to be an investor! It's not available to everyone, and its only for Australians.

most nigerians do not know what its like leaving in UK until they have come here. am presently in the uk doing my masters, i should b through by sept and by december am back home to naija. Its really difficult getting a decent and befitting job here, even with a masters degree. I have 2friend who did that masters here, a male and female. the girl has hspm and she works in a hospital as an account clerk, but she isnt getting satisfied. Right now she is planning her return as her boy friend has proposed to her. Now my male friend who did his masters here, worked in royal mail and he too was not getting satisfaction. i spoke with him on monday, and u know what he has booked his ticket back to naija to resume his new job with oceanic bank. The way i see life is that where ever you will reach you will reach whether in naija or abroad, but one thing my good people must know is that over here once u don't have their skin colour just forget it. there is no hope.

Excellent!

What can i offer you baby?

Nothing but God's ABAUNDANCE grace in whatever you lay your hands upon(Amen).

This is one of my problem in this forum: Why can't we just report the good, the bad and the Ugly of the Western World?
Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by Akolawole(m): 2:48am On Jun 29, 2006
Quote from JACKAL.
@ Akolawole,
I am kind of surprised u think my comments are juicy.
The problem with Nigerians in the UK is they tend to believe nothing good is achievable.
For your information, i know at least 20 people in my neighbourhood working with Banks and Telecoms company as IT experts and earning more than £1000 a week easily.
Most of 'em are on contracts and to get these jobs are very easy as long as one is certified.
Getting a NI(National Insurance) is easy as long as your visa allows u to work. All she needs to do is to go to a job centre and arrange for an interview and she will get her NI number in about 2 weeks.
Nigerians limit 'emselves to petty jobs because most Nigerians are lazy and they want the easiest way to make Benjy'z.

Master Degree holders filling the shelves in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons are the pessimistic group of Nigerians in the UK. The ones that have been mis-led and mis-guided that a Black Man will never make it to the top of the echelon. I cannot understand why u think getting jobs is very difficult in UK.
There are billions of jobs out there and as long as u are qualified u will get these jobs.

Accomodation is a bit on the high side for everyone living in London but hey, this is Europe just like it is in Nigeria.
People staying in Lagos pay more on rents and earn more compared to their counterparts staying in Kogi State or Zamfara State.
So be prepared to earn less dough if u want to stay outside London.

UK is a land flowing with milk and honey as long as u can work hard to get these certifications.
There are plenty of jobs at the London Underground.
Protection Masters at the London Underground still get paid as much as £120 a day but the lazy Nigerians will rather work at ASDA and Sainsbury because he/she does not want to read and take exams for high paying jobs.

My Advice: Run back to UK before your visa runs out.

Now Jackal, we have carried our Arguments from Sports to here.

1) When did you start living in UK [no offence please]

2) 20 people in Neighbourhood getting bla bla bla: Sweet talk my brother! . Even if you do all those short Courses, references in your CV will mess you up. Hundreds of people are doing it daily. Whats the percentage of people that eventually get the job? Many many Oracle certified people roam the streets daily looking for work via Reed et al.

3) You don't get NI number via Job centre { I guess you came to London few months ago}. With a job offer, you book an appointment with a DSS(Department of Social Security), Appointment alone will take 2-3 weeks then getting the card will take a minimum of yet another 2 weeks.

4) Plenty of MSC holder with British citizenship still struggled around in Britain: It is a fact.
Did you think they(UK) value education so much? NO SIR! Except Specialist courses like Nurses,Doctors,Teachers et al
Take a Stroll around HSBC,Barclays and NAtwest banks, you will be suprised that most of the workers were just GCE 'O' levels holders as compared to Naija where the least would be HND.

5)Protection Masters! : 70% of them are Nigerians. They are not staff of London Undeground, That is not a Skilled work my brother. Nightwatch at Stations that do the maintenance of the rail. Its an agency work and not full-time.
Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by Jackal(m): 10:50am On Jun 29, 2006
@ Akola,
Ya line of arguments is kind of bizzare.

Lemme head-lock your points one by one.

* Oracle certified people roaming the streets are the lazy types i've been talking about.
New computer/software applications come out everyday and so u need to UPGRADE yourself to the demands of the market.
I cannot relax because of an Oracle certificate i had 6 years ago. The computer world is dynamic so u have to be fresh.
Tell your oracle friends roaming the streets to forge ahead and take new courses because what they have now hold is both obsolete and archaic.

** I have been living in the UK since IBB refused to give power to MKO. grin

***Akola, i guess u just came to London because u get NIs through DWP and not DSS.(DSS is now obsolete) grin
A lot of people even use temporaray NI numbers to work which is made up of your DOB(Date of Birth) and some funny letters.
Meanwhile, the card is even useless and its the NI number that counts.
The number comes through the post before the card eventually arrives and u can start working as soon as u have that number which cannot be more than 10 working days depending on the area where u applied.
It normally takes longer time in the London area.

***** It seems u have not been reading my posts on this thread.
I have already stated its not your degree that matters in the UK. It is what u can do.
I am yet to see anyone that holds a current professional certification in IT that roams the streets for jobs.
Some people hold MCSE and CCNA certificates they have had 10 years ago and they expect to get good jobs with it. How's that done?
Its competitive out there so one needs to UPGRADE himself to stand tall among others.
I know a 60 yr old Chartered accountant that still writes exams in the UK to UPGRADE himself every 3 years. Its the way the system works here unlike Nigeria where people romance certificates they have had in 5 decades!!!!!!!!!!!

Protection Master is a skilled job at London Underground. I don't know where u got your theory from.
Nightwatch is quite different from the job of a protection master. Get your facts right.
A protection master is required on site every time work is carried out on the tracks.
They get paid an absolute fortune (they all drive Mercedes/BMWs) and their strenuous labour for the night goes as follows:
1. The track current is automatically turned off at about 1am.
2. The Protection Master places "Current Rail Indicator Device" (CRID) across the tracks.
3. The CRID confirms that the current has been turned off and it is safe to work on the tracks.
4. Protection Master gives the working team the nod to carry out their graft on the tracks, whilst the rest of the PM's shift comprises sitting around, reading The Sun and snoring.

Guess what? U need about £600-£1000 to take courses and exams to be a Protection Master and they take exams every 2-3 years to UPGRADE 'emselves.
A Protection Master earns between £120-£180 a day depending if u work during engineering hours(at nights) or during the day.
Tell your friends to do a re-think and stop roaming the streets with obsolete M.Sc and obsolete certificates they have had for decades. grin grin grin
Blue-collar jobs pay more dough than White-collar jobs. They should leave their Nigerian mentality in Nigeria and adapt quickly to the system in Europe.
Most of these GCE Holders working as cashiers for HSBC and Abbey National banks earn about £12,000-£14,000 per annum(approx. £250 a week)
I still believe UK is a land of opportunity compared to Nigeria. People get paid doing nuthing in the UK.
The railway company in the UK is the perfect job for anyone to idle away his time.
C'mon everybody. Join the railway family and get paid to idle! grin

THE SITUATION IN NIGERIA IS ALMOST THE SAME IN THE UK. I AM A STUDENT IN THE UK, AND I HAVE JUST FINISHED. I UNDERSTAND THAT IN NIGERIA BEFORE U CAN GET A JOB, U MUST KNOW SOMEONE THAT TRUE, I WONT DISPUTE U ON THAT. BUT HERE TOO, AS A GRADUATE, IT'S ALMOST LIKE NAIJA. ITS A BIT HARD TO GET A JOB IN A GRADUATE POSITION HERE, WHERE THEY WOULD PAY YOU A GRADUATE SALARY,

HOWEVER, THERE ARE OTHER MENIAL JOBS THAT WOULD HAPPY TO EMPLOY YOU, IF YOU DONT MIND, BEAR IN MIND THAT THESE JOBS ARE HARDLY ENOUGH TO PAY FOR RENT.

AS U EXPLAIN UR SITUATION, I THINK COMING TO THE UK WOULD BE A BIT COOL. TRY TO GET A JOB IN THE UK QUICK AND THEN SAVE ENOUGH AND THEN START UR OWN COMPANY IN NAIJA, THAT IS THE ANWSER, OH,

MAY GOD HELP U, JUST PRAY TO GOD, AND HE WONT LET U DOWN, HOPE U A CHRISTAIN SHA,

By God's grace, i will leave Ibadan for London next week, I will like to meet you somewhere in Liverpool Street. We will start with those tall buildings of multinationals companies, count the number of blacks(Not only Nigerians) that worked there(beside Cleaners or Security).

You will be the first Nairalander that i will meet. I am very serious o.

Can you confirm this please

1) According to your profile, you are 21 years old. That is born in 1985.

2) You claimed to leave Naija during MKO/Abiola wahala i.e 1993/1994 when you are 8 years old.

3) You were in Yankee for 9-11 months on Study

4) You currently work as a System Engineer for a London telecommunication company.

5) You are advocating "Lazy" Nigerians to join London Underground as Protection masters.

6) Whats your UK Immigration status[ sorry, i have to go that far grin]

7) What is the first two letters of your NI number?. Mine start with "PX"

Then i will respond to your last post word by word, statement by statement.

nobody is asking the girl if she's happy here in uk or if she can cope with the stress as in working like buffalo and earning like ant, if you are not happy here in uk you can stay in nigeria and pray so hard that God will even know you are seruious about it and you will get a job why are we all thinking as if there is no space at all for employment in naija to be serious things are not that hard some of us are saying this because we aere stuck here

Now you want his NI number and want to know his Immigration Status. Damn bro but isn't that a little TMI? It is possible for him to be making all that money, and he might just choose to hang around people that share his ideals and are in his economic scale. Why are you doubting him so much? You think he is singing?

@Jackal
I am a bit confused though, do you work for the London Underground or are you with a Telecommunication Firm. You are so pro London Underground, that is why i asked. But i do not think Nigerians are Lazy. Many times the lack documents that they need to work and that can make life unbearable.

@Praetor
I live in the US, i was just asking how you came over the pond. Thanks for your explanation.

Are u an immigration officer?
Why do u need ma NI number?

Anyways, the 1st 2 letters of ma NI start with JT. Satisfied?
Luckily my immigration status has changed from a green passport to red passport.
Don't ask me how i did it.

Did u say ur NI number starts with PX?
I will put ur NI application in the UK sometime around 1999-2001(early).
Am i correct?

Cheers. grin

@ Old Glory,
I have identified the factor of lack of proper documents to work earlier in ma posts.
There are still some Nigerians that have got proper documents but won't work for their sins.

I was just advocating for 'em to migrate to the railway companies cos u can actually get paid for doing nuthing at London Underground.
Nigerians here complain that they work 3 odd jobs and they cannot make ends meet.
Why not go to where u can actually get paid handsomely without breaking a sweat?
U feel me?

Akola told me u guys have been arguing on this topic since the last 24 hours.
I cannot help but laugh with all y'all comments.

London can be very difficult but can Akola tell us where things are easy anywhere in the world?
We are not in the biblical days when people were having manna for free.
Everyone has to sweat to make cheddarz.

I think i quite agree with 95% of ur comments. It is not as difficult as some people make it to be and its not as rosy as some of us think as well.

The only thing i question in ur comment is u saying an average Nigerian is lazy.
An average Nigerian aint lazy in the UK. There are still some latent traces of racism in the country and black men have not been given the full opportunity to excel in their chosen fields.

Most people squirm when you ask them about any immigration issue. I understand why people react that way, but i think Akola went to far to ask Jackal for his SSN #. I think those are fighting words if you ask me. But in the UK i guess the mix letters and numbers so he asked just for the letters in the NI number. But that is a private issue and i think he knows better.

I think Nigerians and Immigrants in the (US and EU) are mostly hardworking. I know they are a few Lazy people, but i think your statement is too broad.

Protection masters are not Employees of London Underground. They came to undergrounds around 12 midnight, will not start work until the last train, finishes work before first train in the morning.

Most of them are from agencies and they dont check status before you go for their course/jobs. wink

1) Dont forget this lady is not a JJC in Uk.

2) HSMP has nothing to do with shortage occupations in fact from May 2006, it will be given to any applicant who graduated from UK University at Masters degree level irrespective of the course studied.

But for applicants from Naija and other countries, they need to meet the work experience standard and few other things. But British high commision may still mess up.

1) not everyone can afford those stated exams.
2) People get stuck in those menial jobs mostly because, they need to get on with something, to pay bills and also to send money back home.
3) not everyone has relatives or LOYAL friends who can accomodate them before proper stability.

and finally, if u were lucky to have been accomodated by relatives as soon as u enter the uk, or had the opportunity of which your education was sponsored, just thank your GOD, not everyone has that PRIVILEGE, and it's quite UNFAIR for the UNLUCKY ones to be refered to as being LAZY or WITH NO VISION OR ASPIRATION to futher their study .

Thanks my sister.

Let Jackal answer my questions first, disprove the protection masters/London Underground then i will make my final comments.

Thank God we are able to stay in that UK small, we would have been Mumu on a thread like this.

If there is one set of people that are hardworking, haba! Nigerians is No1 anyday.

@ Akolawole,

I am fast losing the appetitie to comment further on this topic as you're diverting the line of the argument.
Lemme clarify some points once and for all.

Protection Masters are employees of the London Underground indirectly.

The London Underground is an arm of TfL(Transport for London) which gives maintenance contracts to railway companies like suretrack, metronet and metroline etc.
It is these railway companies that employ protection masters, track engineers, train cleaners so its a sort of link.

U cannot work for these railway companies without passing a medical examination conducted by the office of the London Underground even if u pass the written examinations. The London Underground do an eye test and ear test for all prospective employees before u can qualify to work on the tracks.
For your information, since the 7/7 bombings they now run a comprehensive security check before employing in case 'em terrorist cells wanna sneak in.

The Protection Masters all carry the London Underground ID on em anytime they have to work on the Underground so they work indirectly for the LUL.
Got it? tongue

I am surprised U are arguing a bit off-topic.

All i am saying is if anyone can take the courses and pass the exams you're guaranteed at least a pay package of £120 a day.
These courses do not require a degree or even GCE. Just walk in and take the exams and if u pass u'll get employed.

A lot of Nigerians are already enjoying this opportunity so i just don't like when people complain out of ignorance that UK is so haaaaaaaaard!!!!!!!!
Best believe it, life is what u make it. Why would anyone complain that UK is so difficult to survive with an opportunity like this?

The author of this thread can also enjoy this privilege and join the railway family.
I doubt if she will remember Nigeria when her salary starts netting £600 per week without too much stress.
Blue-collar jobs pay more so tell your Oracle certified pals still roaming the streets to do the math.

The statement "Nigerians are lazy" does not necessarily mean all Nigerians are lazy.
If 6 out of 10 Nigerians u meet on the streets are lazy then u can statistically conclude that Nigerians are lazy.
I put the other 4 hard-working Nigerians(Akola, Old Glory, Praetor and Hucarson) as the people that have criticised this statement on this thread.

Furthermore, Nigerians in the UK are quite different from the Nigerians based in the US.
All the Nigerians that are qualified to work in the States do have one or two jobs and they all work unlike in the UK.

UK is a place where different scams go down everyday and Nigerians take advantage of this loopholes to make money so majority of 'em don't work.
Ever heard of a place called Thamesmead in South-East London?
Its like FESTAC kind of setting and its inhabitated mostly by Nigerian youths.
None of these peopz(especially the guys)work 365 days of the year because they all live on one scam or the other to survive year-in year out.
Each of these dudes own posh cars, smart flats and accrue at least £30,000-£50,000 per annum on fraudulent scams.

75% of the Nigerians living in the UK cannot provide a genuine proof of income.
Is that what u call hard work? I am having a laugh.  grin grin grin grin grin grin
If you're looking for the most hard-working people in the world please look towards the eastern European bloc(Polish,Czechs,Serbs,Romanians)
