It's not really about blaming anyone.
The Executives-in-charge seem not to be operating with any priority list.

YourHealthlabs: Federal government should employ the fashola approach, overhaul!.

Statistically, NMA has gone on strike 103 times in 30 years, JOHESU has gone on strike just twice in resistance to the oppression of it's members in the health sector by doctors after exercising great restraint and patience. Who is more humane?

They want FG to give them special plate numbers, special road routes, siren blaring escorts and police orderlies.
I trust our Nurses, they will rise to the occasion.

For the records, all doctors who are consultants do not go on strike. That is the service they render for reaching the peak of their career.

If they like they should permanently withdraw their services

You speak from your anus. While I don't support the doctors strike, I find it totally unreasonable asking what doctors have achieved. So whose fault is it that they fly people to India? The doctors? Or the system that has failed its own people

Dear Nairalanders, pls permit me to use a few bad words here as I type this;I really wish not to. These doctors are not only stupid, they are selfish, retarded, evil and devilish. Infact, they are bastards of the highest order. For people who claim to be members of a noble career,to come out and tell us they are going on strike and putting the lives of millions of Nigerians at risk, because of a trivial issue of "who and who should be regarded as consultants",is totally unacceptable. How does it affect their jobs,or their salaries? Since when did politics become part of the medical profession? In developed countries and some developing countries, you never get to hear of doctors going on strike under such flimsy excuses. Unions in different parts of the world, help to develop their nations, collectively but in Nigeria,it is something different. They think about how to actualize their selfish interests first, before thinking about service to the Nation. ASUU,PENGASSAN,NMA,NUPENG,etc, all tow the same line;how would the Nation ever move forward. Nigeria is dying fast and in the nearest future,we might become an example of "a state that was".

Where in any part of the world this Doctors make such ridiculous demand, may be they think they are most important in the society, should police go on strike for one day or Solidiers then we know who's more important.

Is this why the Doctors are going on strike? No wonder Nigerians fully hope on God in this country. If God keeps you healthy just thank him because if not, you are dead. PH.D holders in all professions are addressed as doctors so why would people in other medical profession not be addressed as such? Meanwhile Nigerians just addresses any male health professional as a Dr and female as nurse just the way all detergent is OMO.

Yo, Bar.

As a doctor, the reasons why patients are transferred abroad are numerous. Here are a few

1. Our hospitals are not well equipped, especially with diagnostic equipment.

2.Poor preventive health practice, especially in the lifestyle diseases (our public health focuses too much on malaria and diarrhoea. I think it is time we focused more on hypertension, diabetes and obesity....preventing them, that is.

3.You cannot run a proper hospital in Nigeria without good water and electricity supply. I have been working in private care since 2008. And to be honest, all the private hospitals I have worked in have to supply their own power, and water.

4.We don't have enough medical people....especially doctors. and nurses. More crucially , we don't have enough specialists.

5.Medical students train with limited equipment , and so on.

I guess the solution is funding....which means that hospitals would have to find money. As an example of how deficient funding is in Nigerian hospitals, OAUTH spent 60bn naira last year. Meanwhile Massachusetts General in Boston USA spent $750MILLION for research.

One more thing about foreign hospitals. Many patients now go to India as you pointed out. While India is good , they still have a large number of poorly equipped hospitals , especially in the rural areas.

Why in God's name should people who are supossed to be very passionate so concerned about themselves. Check out the pay of all medics and para medics you'll find out that we are blessed.

@bolded
Beats immagination. and that is good enough reason for lots of patients to lose their lives??

1.Well, most Nigerian doctors can treat malaria (at least I have treated hundreds of malaria patients successfully over the last eight years!)

2.I would blame the govt somewhat....for not increasing funding for healthcare AND healthcare training, and for not being like the Cubans in focusing more on preventive healthcare.....especially concerning lifestyle based illnesses. (like hypertension...we need to focus more on prevention). Of course my blame goes to the Ministry of Health.

(Seriously, we may have to increase fees charged in hospitals, if we want to see improvements in healthcare...there are too many of us in this country....and the money isn't enough)

3.I agree that the reasons for the strike are a bit strange (and that is as far as I would go, as I am a member of NMA!)...but, at the same time, I would say, going slightly off tangent...that the problem in health care is that most people seem to think that teamwork is over-rated. And I'll leave it at that!

Bar, the man

Few weeks ago, I was on call , and I was called to the bedside of a diabetic man with diabetic ketoacidosis. (Google for it). I immediately placed him on intravenous fluids, and wrote out orders for his drug treatment. Now my aim in treating this patient was to rehydrate him and to control his blood sugar...which I did. We also investigated him for infectious disease. He recovered and was sent home with some advice on drug compliance ( the cause of his ketoacidiosis was that he stopped taking his anti-diabetic drugs several weeks earlier)

Now that is beyond just 'first aid.'' We not only got his blood sugar under control, we also got him preppped for life when he is discharged.

Now , that isn't just first aid!
(P.S--He is one of many cases of diabetic ketoacidiosis/hyperglycemic emergencies that I have seen over the last two years working in a busy private hospital in urban setting here in Nigeria).
