Catfish is the new term for getting fooled online by someone pretending to be someone they are not, thanks to the popular TV show “Catfish”. Basically, someone hijacks random photos of a good-looking individual and pretends to be that person. Guys generally grab a shirtless six-pack model and girls use attractive, but yet believable females. The photo is just the beginning. People create an entire life story for these fake profiles. They strike up fake friendships online, create multiple accounts (nairanland, twitter, facebook, bbm, badoo etc.) for their false identity, and some go as far as getting into relationships for years with people.
With more and more people socializing and connecting online the greater the risk of getting Catfished. Lucky for you I have put together a fool-proof plan on how not to get Catfished.

1. If It Sounds Too Good To be True, It Probably Is :-

Most normal guys do not use shirtless photos showing off their six-pack for their profile photo. Let’s be honest, not many guys have six-pack abs. It is a little tougher for guys to pick up on the photo clues since girls do tend to post more “cute n nude” self-photos.

2. Video Chat :-

If the other person isn’t willing to video chat it should be a huge red flag. Anyone can find a batch of photos of the same person, but if they aren’t willing to hop on a program like Skype and video chat in real time, you have a reason to be suspicious.

3. Become a Stalker :-

Yees o google search has an awesome feature that will search the entire internet looking for any and all matches of the photo you upload. Chances are if you’re getting Catfished, your Catfisher has stolen the photos from someone else on the internet..e.g treysongz, jason momoh (drogo in game of thrones)

4. Don’t Wait to Meet

Some of these relationships have lasted years before the truth is uncovered. Do not waste years talking with someone who isn’t real. Insist that you meet early on in the relationship. If the other person fumbles around and comes up with every excuse in the book, your red flag should be raising.

5. Scope Out Their Activity Online :-

Do they ever post new photos online? Pictures with family? Friends? On Vacation? Or do they just stick to their same photo album filled with shirtless six-pack photos or model-like headshots? Run baby run ! Pay attention to their updates and how they interact with others. You can generally get a good feel of how genuine someone is by their interactions with others.

6. . Profiles with low amounts of friends/followers :-

While some people don’t have thousands of twitter followers, most people have more than 10. If their profile or profiles on various social media accounts have very low friends and followers, this is a red flag. It doesn’t take much to connect your e-mail account with Twitter or Facebook and find 100+ people to connect with. These people can’t do that because they need to make fake friends or else their cover will be blown...

7. LOVE Is Not In The Air.:-

If the person you are conversing with starts to tell you how much they love you, that they can’t live without you, or that you two are soul mates AND they have never met you in person, RUN for the hills.

8. 10. Don’t Get Involved With Random People On The Internet :-

Save yourself the trouble and just don’t get involved with random people on the internet. If you don’t have any mutual friends, any sort of group that connects the two of you (work, church, school, local organization), or some sort of event you both were at but didn’t meet, be very cautious....!!!!
