You lack moral right to complain about impunity

The Presidency has responded to comments attributed to a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, castigating Mr president for an alleged brutal crackdown on the opposition in the country.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, Mr. Jonathan described Mr. Buhari’s statement as uncharitable and unwarranted.

“President Jonathan has never at any time ordered that any Nigerian should be kidnapped or that anyone should be crated and forcefully transported in violation of decent norms of governance. “We therefore urge General Buhari to tarry a while, ponder over his own antecedents and do a reality check as to whether he has the moral right to be so carelessly sanctimonious.” In 1984, fugitive politician and former minister of transport, Alhaji Umaru Dikko, was abducted, crated and about to be forcefully returned to Nigeria from the UK as “diplomatic bag” allegedly to come and face charges of corruption when Buhari was military head of state.

The baggage was eventually opened by British authorities. The Buhari government denied any involvement in the saga, but that did not stop a face-off between UK and Nigeria, leading to a recall of high commissioners and a break in diplomatic relations for years. The full text of Abati’s statement: “We have noted with much surprise and regret, the statement issued by General Muhammadu Buhari today in which he made some wild and totally unsustainable allegations against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

“Although he tries very hard to deny it in the statement titled “Pull Nigeria Back From the Brink”, there can be no doubt that General Buhari has sadly moved away from the patriotic and statesmanlike position he recently adopted on national security, which President Jonathan publicly commended, and has now reverted to unbridled political partisanship. “There can be no other explanation or justification for the completely unwarranted and very uncharitable assault on the conduct and integrity of President Jonathan which the statement he issued today represents. “General Buhari’s main grouse which clearly motivated his ill-considered statement appears to be what he called “the gale of impeachments or the utilisation of desperate tactics to suffocate the opposition and turn Nigeria into a one-party state”.

“It is most unfortunate that instead of working to put their house in order and resolve the leadership crises and internal contradictions that have plunged their party into a downward spiral, General Buhari and his opposition allies have resorted to blaming a blameless President for their woes. “The processes for impeaching an elected Governor are clearly stipulated in the National Constitution which Nigeria has operated since 1999.

The President of Nigeria is not assigned any role in that process and President Jonathan has certainly not played any role in the recent impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa or in the impeachment drama currently being played out in Nasarawa State. “For the record, President remains fully committed to upholding the letters, principles and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution as he has sworn, and defending the rule of law and integrity of the democratic process with all his might. “General Buhari talks about anarchy. He needs to be reminded that President Jonathan from his humble beginnings as a Deputy Governor in Bayelsa state to date, has never in his acts, or utterances, recommended or promoted violence as a tool of political negotiation.

“Contrary to whatever General Buhari and his new friends may imagine, President Jonathan fully respects the rights, powers, authority and independence of elected representatives of the people, including the members of the state assemblies who have concluded or initiated impeachment proceedings against their state governors on grounds which they consider justifiable.

The General was a brave soldier that hated corruption with every cell in his body and did anything to curb the menace of corruption regardless of whether the thief runs to hide under Queen Elizabeth's skirts. This is exactly what Nigeria needs right now, an anti-corruption czar that doesn't care whose ox is gored in the pursuit of transparency and accountability regardless of powers-that-be home and abroad.

The moment you ignore the law as a leader for the sake of punishing your enemy or enemies because they are no longer in terms you, you are no longer a leader, that makes you a tyrant or a dictator, from you post its clear that Buhari is a typical tyrant that can go to the extreme just to pay back, he reminds me of Gadaffi and Hitler..........

Lets hear word. The whole world has at one point had its share of military rule brutality. That the whites called the blacks monkeys and sold blacks as slaves, using them to develop thier countries have not stopped the blacks from going to seek greener pastures on the white man land or having relations with them. This is 2014 and not 1984, Things have changed...if you are still living in the 1984 mentality then you are on your own. Good morning!

Buhari has no respect for the law. He has no clue what democracy entails.

Has anyone imagined how an egocentric violence-oriented extremist like buhari can work with the legislature and judiciary under a democratic dispensation?

Its almost impossible having Buhari at the helm of affairs without corresponding anarchy.

But he could work as the chairman of PTF and approve funds for your sister to travel abroad to for medical atrention? Those who oppose Buhari are criminals just scared of being hunted by the anti corruption tsunami that will befall them.

Therefore you agree GEJ is not a leader but a tyrant, a despot and a dictator going by your explanation as his attempts at punishing his enemies/the opposition and innocent Nigerians campaigning for the release of the kidnapped girls gets worse by the day, not to mention the Azazi debacle.

The General acted as a soldier in power that was forced to resort to extreme tactics to recover a corrupt official that ran to London and was being shielded by diplomatic laws which the military government does not recognize. This is an act which underlined the sovereignty of our country, unlike today where foreign boots are welcomed with open arms. Shame!

Those who get overly emotional at the mention of Buhari are the real enemies of Nigeria. Its absurd to keep harping on the viability of an old military hag over the teeming population of very capable young and enterprising Nigerians.

Your Buhari should identify a capable and younger Nigerian and support him. It cannot be him alone.... he's got lots of baggages.

The points remains that Buhari is the wrong(est) person to voice out on brutal crackdown on the opposition or enemies, lets face reality what has the President done that is brutal? why didnt you blame the President for the impeachment of the PDP HOA speaker in Ebonyi state yesterday? Nyako before his impeachment vehemently said that the President had no hand in his impeachment, Leadership Newspaper carried it ( an anti Jonathan Newspaper) in the papers of today Al Makura has also said that the the President has nothing to do with impeachment move.APC should fix their internal problems and stop ranting trash...you inclusive

Same old rubbish and poo. Buhari's clamp down was mainly and anti corruption crusade which forces were scared off and decided to remove him by another coup. What happened after then, we had one of the worst corrupt government in Nigeria, unfortunately Jonathan's government seems to have taken the place of Babaginda's position in terms of corruption. Jonathans government is also taking the place of Obj in terms of civilian dictatorship, with the shutting down of airports against opposition, mis-use of military to intimidate opposition, unlawful detention of opposition, malicious suspension of opposition anad lots more, unlawful militarisation of state in the name of elections. We are having a civilian dictator in the 20th century. Shame on you and supporters of impunity.
