Omarbah:
The cultural differences, Dialas being most animists, the fact that their region is more fertile that the other parts of Senegal and also the presence of the other groups coming from the North to farm on their land pose problems.
I think the Diolas truly feel marginalized and ostracized by the other groups. Wolofs and Fulbe have at least something in common, Islam.
The resistance is not intense though I must admit.

That thing is a scam, Casamance people are complaining about mines killing people. Those mines were installed by the MFDC rebels, yet it's the Senegalese army who removes them and face criticism. In 30 years old of pseudo war independentists never succeeded to occupy one village. They hide in the bush instead. Casamance would be the most beautiful and developed part of Senegal if it wasn't for that rebellion. Wolof and Fulbe have a lot more in common than Islam, Wolof culture comes from Fulbe, but yet they are the most open minded people in the country.
MFDC rebels have to realize that Casamance will never be independent.

The thing is we (Wolofs) are the majority, 46% of the population. We had the greatest kingdoms, our music is the best, we dress better and our food is the best! We poppin cheesy

That's why in Sereer villages they prefer cooking thieb or wolof couscous instead of their sereer couscous. In Fulani village people who can afford it eat Wolof rice, it's so much better than latchiri haako ahaha! We the best!

What does it take for a foreigner to marry from a fulani family??

Is it only the flogging and Islam??
Re: Meet The Most Beautiful People On Earth- The Fulanis by Takamba: 8:07pm On Aug 27, 2014
Omarbah:
there we go, it's like seneweb.com. Mbalax which is pretty much what Senegalese music is, has Serer origins. As for the kingdoms, I think it's debatable. Let's start with Takrur which flourished at the same time as the Empire of Ghana and gave its name to pretty every single west African going to Arab lands. The Imamate of Futa Toro was one of the most well organized and disciplined in the history of this continent. And it is truly a blueprint for a future Islamic state if there is one to rise on this part of the continent.
Faidherbe had much praise for the organizing skills of the Fulbe.
I love Wolofs, I ain't got no problem with them. But they should be comfortable with others speaking a different language. Just because Mande, Diola and Serer willingly accept Wolof and let go of theirs doesn't mean Fulbe have to do it.

Oh, I go to seneweb everyday and there aren't ethnic problems there, the lone problems are coming from trolls trying to pass themselves as Peuls.
Mbalakh music is an adaptation of Cuban salsa mixed to Senegalese rythms (Wolof, serer, Fula and others).
The problem is there wasn't only Fula living in Tekrour, Wolof (the ancestors of what will become wolof people) and serer lived in Futa before and serer left for the south.
As a Guinean you cannot have any problem with Wolof or Fulas or any other ethnic group in Senegal because beyond our different cultures all Senegalese are one. There is not ethnicism in Senegal (I can't say the same for Guinea).
Ndiadiane our first Wolof king had a Tukuloor mother, yet he also had a Fulani wife named Oufa and their son became the ancestor of the Fulani aristocracy in Jolof kingdom. Ndiadiane Wolof wifes bore the Wolof kings. In Jolof Wolof and Fula came from one ancestor Ndiadiane who was mixed race. We are brothers, and nobody can separate brothers.

To be honest with you. Typically speaking Fulanis don't marry outside of their group (well I guess it varies if you are a Muslim). Fulanis have married into Hausa, Mande, Yoruba, Wolof and Serer groups and more recently Tuareg. But typically speaking, the act is frowned upon. Most Fulani want to remain rimbe and not have their offspring become Rimaybe.

Is it Wolof?

In Wolof chei (we write it Thiey or thieye) is an exclamation. I don't know the exact equivalent but we use it as we use khalass. It is used to mark resignation, deception etc

Way is word that we use in almost all sentences. It is to encourage, just like the French will use allez or the Brits go.
More than it it is the tone used to say the way that can change the meaning. Way can also mark anger or deception.

Cheggal, I have no idea sad

well Fulas of Guinea tend to consider Senegal as their second homeland. When he is frustrated and sick of GUINEA, first destination is Senegal. Even the Almamys of Futa Jallon do it. And today Cellou Dalein , the leader of the Guinea opposition is there half of the time. So much so that other Guineans accuse him of investing his wealth in Senegal.
I love Senegal. Their women have a reputation for knowing how to take care of someone. wink

No not a movement but it's to show the Toucouleur mentality. When a Toucs get appointed to a special position immediately he fires all the staff and hires Toucouleurs. All tribes do it but it is more common with the Toucouleurs, they do it even more than the Fula. Just like the thing Macky Sall is doing right now.

Guineans claim they fear giving power to a Fula for that reason. I thought Macky had more Serer and Wolof in his government?
I know his current prime minister is Serer and the previous was Maninka if I am not mistaken.

I think Aminata Toure (the previous PM) is Wolof. The situation in Guinea and Senegal are not the same but Macky is giving all the strategic positions to either his people or his wife's relatives. All these guys in the government the likes of Abdou Lo etc are Toucouleurs, even if they have Wolof surnames.

I see what you mean. Well if he does not included people from all background, he sure won't get reelected in 2017.
Guinea is in really bad shape. There is so much tension and rivalry between Fulans and Maninkas. I know Senegal will avoid it,
your politicians are more responsible.

Things got worse when Mbagnick Ndiaye (a Sereer) was thanking the First Lady because it was because of her that he and Mactar Ba were appointed in the government. It created a big debate and Mbagnick Ndiaye later apologized, but it cleared the questions on who was really taking the decisions. Now to be appointed you have to befriend or carry the bags of the First Lady, or be Toucouleur or Sereer grin.
People say that Macky Sall won't do a second term not because of ethnic thing but because the guy is not working, he is just gaining weight.

what a shame, at this point, I don't know who can replace. Maybe Tanor Dieng. He seems to be a good statesman.
Not Idy though, his thirst for power is scary.

Oh not Tanor, he was just a lucky boy, people have seen what he has done under Diouf administration. He is having right now problem with his party and is struggling to keep his place of leader.
Me too I'm not feeling Idy, he looks tortuous.
At this point I really don't know undecided
We should maybe try a woman.

then Aissata Tall Sall, I love her. She has a lot of energy.

Khalifa is very popular now, but only in Dakar. Mais comme on dit qui gagne Dakar gagne le Senegal.
Oh yes, I like Aissata, she really challenged Tanor for the presidency of the Socialist Party and if Khalifa Sall and the Socialist leaders didn't separate themselves from her she would won. Now during the elections for Podor mayor, Racine Sy corrupted one judge and stole the victory for the mayor elections from her. She is really a strong woman. All these politicians are sexist.
Aminata Toure would be another good choice. Too bad Macky Sall played her.

How so? Wasn't Mimi fired because APR lost the elections?
I followed the episode with Racine Sy. I do think everything will be done to weaken Aissata. It's tough to make
it in a vastly Muslim countries with strongly entrenched Sufi orders.

Macky made her competing for the elections on purpose, so he would have an excuse to fire her. He knew that she wouldn't win. Losing local elections is not enough to fire a prime minister, he just wanted to replace her.
During the Podor elections I heard some disrespectful words like "tell Aissata that she is just a blacksmith daughter, a woman like her cannot compete with a Torodo like Racine".
I have no idea about her background, it was just what we were hearing from her (low class) opponents.
It's not a Sufi problem, because Aissata has been Podor's mayor for a long time. It is true that she won in extremis (by 6 votes), but she really won, Racine Sy, supported by Macky Sall really stole the victory from her.
It is one of Macky's tactics, to avoid the influence of the opposition.
He did the same thing in Saint Louis by stealing the victory from Ahmed Fall and giving it to his brother in law who is now the mayor.

shocked oh wow, I thought she was of the Torodo caste. I guess I was mislead by her light skinned complexion. Knowing what she did for Podor, I think it's a shame to her treated that way.
I have a question Rox, how do Senegalese feel about the Sufi orders and rising power?

Lol castes do not depend on complexion. El Hadj Omar was light skinned too and Abdul Kader Kane was dark skinned according to descriptions.

You mean the brotherhoods? They are very powerful and almost every Senegalese belongs to one. The Murids are getting particularly more and more powerful.
Touba is now the second city in the country in term of economy and population.

These religious institutions are important sister. They build a second layer of protection for the society. This way if the state fails, the morale
decline won't reach the society and devour it. This is why I believe Senegal is still culturally rich. You are greeted with Salamec or Nanga Def instead of "what's up" or Bonjour.
We are not going to finish this without me asking, what business opportunities do you see there? I know real estate is a big thing but what else would you suggest? smiley
