Dangote is not the only investor in rice production. There are currently several functioning rice mills in the country, including Ebony, Stallione, etc

Those who are shouting poor people/peasant farmers will be left out seem not to have seen this part of the OP:

In his remarks, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, stated that the Dangote farms and mills were expected to significantly boost small-holder rice production in the regions through a nucleus and out-grower farming model.

This, he said, would directly transform livelihoods in rural Nigeria as the sites selected were rice-growing communities that will be supported by Dangote’s provision of agro-inputs, training and marketing linkages to improve community-farming.

He said employment opportunities for at least 8,000 Nigerians will be created by the massive investment.

As someone rightly suggested the way to go is via COOPERATIVE ventures of small scale farmers who are FOCUSED on growing their farms together with other like-minded people.

I understand that Nigeria's most fertile agricultural lands are in the troubled states. What are the architects and choirs of Transformation Agenda doing about this?

I don't sound to oppose Dangote, do i?
For your information the FG just unveils North-East reconstruction plans, these are part of the transformation agenda,if and only if you will call your boys(fanatics) to order.

Omexonomy: most fertile lands are not thesame as rice paddy. So they may be fertile but not suitable for rice planting.
Don't you think the gej govt should take a wholistic approach to agriculture and food sufficiency, which includes taking proactive measures to improve security in those fertile lands?
Or you think they should be abandoned because their lands are "not suitable for rice planting"?

Maybe you just want to lend a voice albeit unwisely.

The experience of countries that had or are experiencing islamic insurgency has shown that there is no magic solution to it. It is difficult problem and the govt has been battling with it. But that does not mean other sectors or parts of the country should stagnate because of insurgency.

True. But the Nigerian case is not handled with the seriousness it deserves.
This war should be executed as a Nigerian issue, not theorised as a "global phenomenon".

berem: Ifeanyichukwu, why must it be only Dangote monopolizing everything in Nigeria? When will other investors be giving the chance? Don't tell me no other person was interested in the same rice business.

Few years back Dangote met some tomato paste importers and advice then on a joint venture to open a tomato factory in kano giving the abundant raw material rotting away there. They flatly told him it is much cheaper to import than to manufacture locally. Dangote decided to do it alone. If tomorrow he becomes dominant in tomato paste sector, people like you will shout Monopoly! forgetting that most Nigerian business men love the easy way out!

What stop others from investing in rice farming? While other business men see risk including Nigerian business men, dangote sees opportunities. And he's never afraid to take risk. Which single business man will take a loan of $9 billion us dollar to invest in an unstable country like Nigeria? The guy has gut, give him some credit! By the way there are other rice investors in nigeria like olams in Nasarawa and dominion rice in taraba and lots of smaller investors.

Dangote is investing massively in domestic production. His competitors / importers are sleeping or watching. It happened in cement in the last 10 years when importers were sleeping while Dangote was building massive cement plants in Nigeria and other African nations. Fast-forward to 2014. Dangote is reaping the billions of dollars that would have otherwise gone to china for cement importation while the cry babies are crying monopoly.

It is happening as we speak now in petroleum products. Dangote is building a massive refinery in Nigeria while petroleum product marketers / importers are sleeping or watching. Fast forward 5 years when he starts producing, they will be shouting monopoly as if they they have not had refinery licenses since 2001 but did absolutely nothing.

Same thing is happening in rice production, Dangote is building rice mills while existing rice importers are sleeping or watching. One thing worth noticing is all these importers have capital to import billions of dollars worth of rice, petroleum products, fertilizer etc but have absolutely no interest / money for local production thereby employing millions of our teeming unemployed youths.

Dangote as an investor is simply treading where Nigerian businessmen men fear to tread i.e doing the hard work of manufacturing as opposed to buying and selling. They would rather export capital to foreign nations and companies enriching them instead of doing the hard work that would industrialize their own country and employ millions of their citizens.

You wonder why Dangote is worth 25 billion dollars? He positioned himself to collect the billions of dollars that poor Nigerians spend annually importing what hardworking citizens of other nations produce. That is money that was hitherto flowing to nations like China, Thailand etc thereby enriching their citizens. A big part of that money is now flowing to Dangote. Why? He positioned himself to collect that money by investing in his country.

We are a nation of 170 million people. Our people buy things every day (cars, clothes, rice, fish, petrol etc) but that money is flowing to the pockets of the citizens of other nations. Any body that can fill this massive gap of needs will be a billionaire in dollars. Only very few like Dangote have been able to do that in Nigeria while the vast majority just love to consume what others produce. In doing so, money is leaving the consumer's pockets and flowing into the producer's pockets.

This is not true. If cement is cheaper in neighboring countries, there would be massive smuggling of cement into Nigeria from there. Ever wondered why cement is NOT smuggled into Nigeria yet rice IS? In fact, there is no product that Dangote sells that is smuggled into Nigeria? Why? The only time smuggled rice dissapeared from Nigeria was when Dangote was importing rice. His prices drove them out.
