segcymoor: Hello Segcy, Is there any reason why you didn't approach this building like your other projects? I mean finishing with the pillars and concrete slabs before doing the block work? |

Onuokwu:Hmmn. I ve been expecting this question. Bros na money o. frame structure is financial involved |

segcymoor: Please which of these method is cheaper. Is it the pillars and concrete slabs first or this method you are using now. Thank you and well-done |

sako28:Frame structure is technically and financially involved. You may save some money if you set block first |

segcymoor: OK. But ultimately, are there implications for quality differences depending on the type used? |
Re: PILE FOUNDATION FOR TERRACE BUILDING AT LEKKI by segcymoor(m): 1:28pm On Dec 08, 2014 |
Basically there are some structure you can't compromise on frame structure if good results is to be Achieved. Minimum of 3 floor and some in accordance with structural engineer recommendations 1 Like |

smallsmall: I have been following this thread from the sidelines, I usually do not comment much on topic, I rather prefer to just sit back and watch. But it seems your question has not been properly answered. Responding to it, basically the traditional suspended floor of mass concrete usually works on the basic principle of designing the slab to be able to carry its own weight (dead weight) plus live weight (humans/furniture etc) and these loads are transferred to the corresponding beams and then to the columns before finally to the foundation below. However, this type of floor where hollow clay-pots (red bricks) are used is referred to a Ribbed Floor. Like the name implies, basically its a system of constructing several little "T" like beams to form a rib system. These little "T" combined together forms a flat surface "-"at the top and the rib hangs below "|" . Lets take 10 "T"s for example and arrange them in an array thus "TTTTTTTTTT" you can clearly see that the top of the "T"s forms a flat surface, which is the slab and the bottom parts leaves a rib like structure of with voids(empty space) in between them. What you see with the clay-pots is an attempt to fill up those voids so that it can be properly dressed and plastered but the truth is that those bricks are not structural members (ie they do not carry/transmit any loads). As a matter of fact, the floor would still hold. It would even be stronger because these pots are actually imposed loads on the slabs, apart from bearing it own load and the live load, it still has to carry these bricks (though the self weights of these bricks are considered during the design). So logically, it would mean that if these bricks are ignored during construction, it definitely means there would be lesser load for the slab to carry. Why engineers continue to use these bricks rather than leaving it void, its basically because of aesthetics and it is also quite cumbersome in preparing the form-work with the all the ribs. I'm actually finding it difficult to explain this in simple terms, maybe a diagram could suffice 3 Likes

Aventures:Not exactly. Ribbed floors usually span in only one direction (along the shorter span) while Waffle Slab spans in both directions. |
