Wise American go back to your country naa or is it by force to stay in Nigeria after all when you people die of lung cancer and the likes do they put any one in the same coffin with you.

Air pollution causes more cases of lung cancer in Nigeria than actual smoking... I mean check out lagos

foolish law...Lagos is a highly polluted city and somebody wanna tell me its cigarette smoke dats contributing 90% of the pollution? I just feel its witch hunting, cause a lotta industries in lag are responsible for pollution, people moving around with automobiles cause pollution, cooking causes pollution or doesn't a smoker have a right to not be polluted by these industries around? Smoking is less of a harm than having a church in a residential area, I have smokers in my compound and a church across the fence and I would pick the smokers over the church 1million times.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) back in February 2014, signed into law a private bill, which outlawed smoking in public places in the state.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) have now made it clear that with effect from Sunday,17 August, 2014, it will be a punishable offence to be cought smoking in a public place.

”The penalties for first offenders include N10, 000 fine and one to three months imprisonment. Repeat offenders may be fined up to N50, 000 or get up to six months imprisonment.

Smokers, who smoke in the presence of a minor or anyone below the age of 18 years risks a fine of N15,000 or six months imprisonment.

According to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ade Ipaye said: “The Lagos State Government, in assenting to the bills, take cognisance of the dangers posed by public smoking to members of the public who are not smokers”.

“The law prohibits smoking in all of those areas that have been designated as non-smoking areas, including museums, public toilets, libraries, nurseries, day care centres and any facility used for the care of infants.

“Public telephone kiosks, public transportation vehicles, private vehicles where there are more than one person, school buses, restaurants and cinemas, theatres, amusement parks or any other place used by members of the public, conference centres and exhibition halls. Factories and other premises in which more than one person works and areas used as places of work, including the secretariat, are all defined in the law as public places”.

How about a stringent regulations on the sale first? As it now children can wall malams or convenient stores to buy a stick of cigarette. Even super markets sells sticks of cigarettes to anybody in Nigeria.

I like the policy, bit there are more urgents actions to take before getting there.

19naia: Thats some good news for lagos... I hate cigarette smoke.. It has been misery for me living in an apartment tower sharing a building with many other residents, many of whom cannot seem to go without a cigarette burning.. I cannot use my central air-conditioner when its hot because it brings in the neighbors constant cigarette smoke that fills the ventilation systems and the halls of the floor..

Every bus stop i go where people gather, people are always smoking and i have to stand aside away..
I get breathing issues and it depresses my mood when enough of the smoke enters me and its compounds take effect in my body.. It is a Misery and thats what i see in the eyes and health of the people addicted to it.. I used to smoke for many years, over a decade of cigarettes, so Im not just talking without having been there to know.. The cigarette itself makes the people feel like they don't care to live long or well anyway, and they are fooled into thinking its their own decision to think like that ,when in fact its the auto pilot desperation for the smoke that makes people throw away care for life and health for a momentary feeling that passes in minutes and then requires more smoke again and again ad infinitum...

No reason to subject non smokers to a world of air that is filled with the smokers choice ,while no clear breathing air is left over in public for the non smokers' choice.. Its proven non smokers have died of asthma attacks heartlessly induced by smokers who fooled themselves into thinking they don't care to live long or have good health, and so they took innocent bystanders to the grave even before they themselves died of it...

Stop lying, you were never a smoker,

Mathematical:

SMH..dont you see the irony in what you just said?...guess youre bastardized citizen... We nigerians always crave for development, yet when new law are implement that will suit 80% citizens ,we always shout foul like were being denied our right.. regardless of some uncouthly law that need urgent protest..

How's the law against smoking a development? Is that how America develop?

Americans, including the government makes serious money from tobacco even though they know it is a number one killer. We shouldn't emulate them in that sphere at all,it is a good policy, but it somewhat another case of running before walking that we usually see in Nigeria policies making.

i wonder why churches and mosques put speakers outside when in fact, the people being address are in the church.
Lagos need to ban that too
Re: Lagos Prohibits Smoking In Public – Law Now In Effect by joseph1832(m): 10:04am On Aug 19, 2014
If the Lagos state government can do this, I see no reason why they can not ban night vigil in churches. Or could Fashola have forgotten that noise pollution is also a type pollution and it is equally dangerous as smoking?.
