Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, said at the weekend that he his seriously considering the option of taking a shot at the Presidency, following pressure from indigenes of the state. Okorocha, who stated this while fielding questions from journalists in Owerri, equally boasted that he was sure to record victory for All Progressives Congress, APC, if he is given the party’s ticket ahead of the 2015 general elections. The Governor described the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as an embodiment of unprogressive minds who have taken the country several years backward because of poverty of vision. “I am considering taking a shot at the Presidency because the pressure is too high and I believe I have the capacity to transform our country for the better”, Okorocha said. He gave a graphic account of monies accruing to some states from the federation account in the past three years said that “only N179 billion had so far accrued to Imo State”. Continuing, Okorocha described it as “a sharp contrast to the intimidating and unbelievable figures that accrued to such states as Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta and Lagos States”, adding that over 60 to 70 percent of the federal allocation to Imo, went into recurrent expenditure. After brandishing what he called “the score card” of his administration, insisted that he had through effective and judicious use of the lean resources, salvaged the state from stagnation. He denied allegations that his administration has no respect for rule of law and to due process in the award of contracts and pleaded with Imo people to shun unwarranted criticism against his administration. OGOJA – FIVE persons, a man and two of his children and two others were confirmed dead on Friday in the village of Uchenyim , Wanikade, North Ukelle in northern Cross River State after eating the meat of a dog. Reports from the area said the dog was fond of eating the eggs laid by native chicken in the Odareko-Uchenyim village and one of the villagers allegedly laced the eggs laid by his chicken with gamalin 20 insecticide and as expected, “the dog ate the eggs and fell ill and when it was about to die the owner quickly killed and prepared it into a delicacy which he, his family consumed and some neigbours consumed ” Ugbem Onawo, a villager narrated to Vanguard. The man and his two children and the two others who died, according to the report also ate the intestines of the dog where incidentally the poison from the gamalin 20 is lodged leading to their taking ill and dying . “After the man shared the intestines among his children and the two neighbours and they ate death came calling and they all died though at different times ”. Our source said Onawo said they were rushed to the local health centre for medical attention but were confirmed dead on arrival at the health centre. “A feeling of grieve has descended on the entire village and people are deeply saddened by what took place as such a tragedy has not befallen them before” Hon Frank Ugbem, the councilor representing Wanikade Ward at the Yala Local Government Area legislature said the tragedy is painful and that he has sent a delegation to console the bereaved families. He said all the dead have been buried in accordance within the tradition of the Ukelle people. |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said Nigerians must hold President Goodluck Jonathan personally responsible if the Ebola Virus Disease spreads more than it has done in the country, after he failed to stop a rally in his support in Port Harcourt on Saturday, despite warning from individuals and groups. In a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said never before has a President of a country sabotaged his own Administration’s policy and endangered the lives of his compatriots as President Jonathan has done over the issue of Ebola. It said the same President who declared a national emergency on Ebola and advised against large gatherings to prevent the spread of the virus was the first to flout his own advice by his failure to stop the rally by the so-called Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) in Port Harcourt, a few days after the virus was detected in the city and at a tiEme that contact tracing was going on to find all those who may have had contact with the medical doctor victim of the disease. ”On the altar of political desperation, President Jonathan put the lives of Nigerians in danger. In order to realize his ambition for re-election, President Jonathan has shown he is ready to sacrifice as many lives of Nigerians as possible. There goes the President’s statement that his political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. This President simply says what he doesn’t mean. ”As we said in our statement of Aug. 28th 2014 calling on President Jonathan to halt the TAN rallies, especially the one in Port Harcourt, could anyone guarantee that none of those who have had contact with the medical doctor who died of the disease will attend the rally? That is why we are calling on Nigerians to hold the President responsible if Ebola spreads more than it has in the country,” APC said. The party said shortly after it made the call for a halt to the TAN rallies, others, including the NBA and Prof. Itse Sagay, in a clearly patriotic duty, issued similar calls. ”In fact, the APC in Rivers described such a rally most appropriately as a ‘firing squad against the people’. But because he will rather be re-elected than give a damn over the safety of the same people who voted him into office, because he will rather transmogrify than transform, President Jonathan ignored all the calls and allowed the rally to hold. This is an unprecedented act of political desperation,” it said. APC said for those who might try to spin the issue by saying the President has no control over the organizers of the rally, they should be asked who the rallies will benefit, whose top officials, including Secretary to the Government Anyim Pius Anyim, have been attending the rallies and what is the source of the funding of the gatherings. ”The TAN rallies are government-sanctioned. The TAN rallies are the Jonathan Administration’s cunning way of beating the INEC ban on campaigns for next year’s general elections. The TAN rallies highlight the impunity of the Jonathan Administration. President Jonathan is the sole beneficiary. He can stop the rallies today, if only he wants to put the nation’s interest above his own personal interest,” the party said. |

The planned ‘Operation Light Up Bayelsa’ programme may be affected by the continued vandalism of electricity facilities by miscreants in the predominantly riverine state as well as the refusal of residents to pay for their electricity consumption. ‘Light Up Bayelsa’ was initiated by the Governor Seriake Dickson’s administration as part of its drive to industrialise and diversify the economy of the state. Dickson last week said his administration had awarded a number of contracts to connect the eight local government areas with electricity, adding that projects meant to enhance the standard of living of the people would not be left abandoned. He said: “Our policy is not to abandon any project. No project that will make life more meaningful to our people will be abandoned. For the light in Sagbama, work is going on at the sub-station. We awarded that contract. Already, the investment we have made is to take light to Ofoni community, because we are connecting all the areas in Bayelsa.” According to him, communities such as Ogbogoro, Akaba, Ogu, Ayama,Famgbe in Yenagoa, communities in the axis of Kolokuma-Opokuma to Trofani in Sagbama, as well as Amassoma, Southern Ijaw, Ogbia local government areas are benefitting from the on-going power projects across the state. He explained that contract has also been awarded to resuscitate the power sub-station at Angiama in Southern as part of the initiatives geared towards linking up the entire state to the national grid and make life more meaningful to the people of the state. Though the governor admitted that Ekeremor, Nembe, and Brass local government areas were yet to be connected to power as they are far flung, he however, assured that in due course, they would all benefit from the scheme. He added that by next year, electricity would be extended to all the local government areas. |

Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, yesterday said it would sanction all officers involved in the unfortunate violent attack on men and officials of the Lagos State Transport Management Agency, LASTMA, few days ago. NCS in a statement by its Public Relations Office, Wale Adeniyi, noted that investigation was on to ascertain whether the men said to be wearing Customs uniform were actually its officials. Adeniyi pointed out that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against such officers if confirmed that they were officials of the Service. According to Adeniyi, “While sympathizing with the LASTMA officials who suffered injuries or embarrassment as a result of the avoidable incidence, the Service wishes to condemn in strong terms, the attack on officials of agencies, especially government agencies discharging their legitimate functions. ”It is worrisome to us that the barbaric action was said to have been perpetrated by officers wearing customs uniform in official vehicle. This act is not permissible under our laws and therefore will not be tolerated. We believe that efforts geared towards ensuring sanity on our roads will reduce accidents and impact positively on trade facilitation. |
