Boko Haram Can’t Stand Cameroon But Operate In Nigeria Without Fear – US by Gooci(m): 9:47am On Sep 05, 2014
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has said that Boko Haram was operating in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria unabated and had shown that it could operate not only in the area, but also in Kano, Abuja and elsewhere. Speaking on Thursday during the Third Session of the Regional Security Working Group of the Nigeria-United States Bi-national Commission, in Abuja, the envoy said the frequency and scope of Boko Haram’s terror attacks had grown more acute since August 2013, when the commission last met, according to report from The Punch Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the United States was troubled by the capture of Bama, Borno State, noting that the conflict had affected the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people in the Lake Chad region.

Cameroon’s military, she added, is increasingly forced to fight Boko Haram within its borders and “they flee back into Nigeria without fear.” She said, “Since we last met in August 2013, the frequency and scope of Boko Haram’s terror attacks have grown more acute and constitute a serious threat to this country’s overall security. “Boko Haram has shown that it can operate not only in the Northeast, but in Kano, in Abuja, and elsewhere. We are very troubled by the apparent capture of Bama and the prospects for an attack on and in Maiduguri, which would impose a tremendous toll on the civilian population. This is a sober reality check for all of us. We are past time for denial and pride.” According to her, despite the collective efforts against the insurgency, the situation on the ground is worsening. “Cameroon’s military is increasingly forced to fight Boko Haram within its borders and they flee back into Nigeria without fear.

The Chibok schoolgirls and others remain hostages, enduring horrible and tragic suffering. “Abubakar Shekau’s bold announcement that Boko Haram is now governing a “caliphate” only adds to the perception that the security situation is steadily worsening. All of these developments are deeply disturbing, and increasingly dangerous with each passing day,” she stated. The diplomat said that in order to combat the insecurity in Nigeria, President Barrack Obama launched a major security initiative to support Nigeria and the region under the Security Governance Initiative at the recent U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington. She explained that the partnership would help both sides to work together to identify the problem and design the solution.
“The United States is close to announcing the launch of a major border security program under our Global Security Contingency Fund, which will include Nigeria and its neighbors Cameroon, Chad, and Niger,” the envoy stated. Thomas-Greenfield said that her country had continued to provide technical training to military and police forces engaged in the fight against Boko Haram, adding that the US was providing advanced training to a Nigerian infantry battalion. She said, “The United States is especially concerned about the more than 700,000 internally displaced persons and reports that those numbers continue to increase. We are deeply troubled by the risks to their personal security and their economic livelihoods as well as the implications on food security. “We are concerned about their ability as citizens to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections. The fabric of too many communities is coming unwoven under the unrelenting pressure of this threat.”

I think the reason why Cameroon can deal with them easily is because they have little or no sympathizers there. But in Nigeria, you can't tell who and who is sabotaging efforts against them. It's usually hard to deal with enemies from within.

Well said. How can you effectively defeat boko haram when they have sympathizers aplenty in Northern Nigeria? A soldier friend of mine on sick leave from Borno State confided in me that many of their instructors at Jaji are boko haram members. Even among the top echelon of the armed forces are boko haram members who for various reasons collaborate among themselves to sabotage the war effort. The US knows this but would rather gloss over it.
May I ask the US why it took them a decade to kill Osama? Wasn'tit because that among other reasons he was provided protection by the locals in Afghanistan?

What the US are trying to say is that the Cameroon solider are better or stronger than our soldiers I don't blame our soldiers for their in ability to defeat BH I blame FG for not willing to give them more sophisticated weapons.
Enemies form within are more difficult to deal with because they know all you secret they know everything about you
The people who are sponsoring BH are people who are very powerful even the president is scared of those people and most of the Northern leaders are not even helping matters they are sabotaging effort to defeat BH.

Osama wasn't operating from some forest right inside the U.S soil unlike Boko Haram right inside Nigeria territory, drives in a convoy and based inside a known hide out in some forest.

Osama was in hidding for years and once they knew where he was, they went straight after him and got him, Boko Haram now has a territory inside Nigeria and flying their flag.

When you lot shut up supporting an inept and incompetent leadership who still believe that the insurgency was all about him becoming a president. Those who called Chibok kidnapping a hoax for many weeks until the whole world was flabbergasted with their ineptness.
They spent time chasing shadows of blackmailing some leaders of the opposition and calling them names, instead of facing the real enemy.
They budget billions year after year on defence but Boko Haram still out guns their military and keeps them on the run.
Jonathan incompetent and playing politics with this problem from the outset gave Boko Haram the chance, time and confidence to grow out of control.

Well, let just agree that the Bokoboys are not after Cameroon yet, It's naija they have issues with. Because of this fact it's then logical to conclude that we don't know if Cameroon has what it takes to deal with Bokoharam.

Where was he hiding? in Jupiter or Pluto? Why did it take them 10 years to discover his hiding place with all their millitary might? The point I'm trying to make is that internal terrorism and of course enemies from within are much more difficult to deal with than the one the US is facing in Afghanistan. Tamil Tigres operated for decades in well known and defined areas but the Sri Lankan govt couldn't beat them, ETA, Long Brigade, IRA did same in Spain, Italy and the Britain respectively so just shut the f up and find out reasons why tge war has prolonged.
I'm not a soldier nor millitary strategist but having lived in the north for years I know what I'm talking about.

With all their millitary might you won't expect that the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon would be bombed and destroyed. OP - don't be so fast to conclude that BH has only succeeded in compromising the Nigerian Armed Forces. Read this about cameroon.

http://www.africa-confidential.com/article-preview/id/5742/Biya%27s_answer_to_Boko_Haram

As further details emerge about Boko Haram's 27 July attempt to capture Amadou Ali, one of President Paul Biya's top ministers and confidants, questions remain about the adequacy of the government's response. The attack – part of a broad offensive by the jihadist insurgents in Cameroon – saw a force of 200 militants driving into the country to seize Deputy Prime Minister Amadou Ali, who was visiting Kolofata, his home town. They killed three before escaping with Ali's wife and other hostages. A major detachment of troops, supported by an armoured vehicle, was mysteriously recalled from Kolofata three days before the attack, Africa Confidential has learned from a source in Yaoundé. Despite calling immediately for help, Ali later complained, the special anti-terrorist unit, the Brigade d'intervention rapide, did not respond and the Boko Haram column was free to escape across the border to Nigeria. Although the attack lasted some four hours, troops only arrived 90 minutes after Boko Haram had left, we hear.

Nigeria must not allow or sign any bilateral defence agreement that could jeopardize our sovereignty with the United States. The US has been longing to set up military base across strategic positions south of the Sahara to further their quest of setting up military bases across the world in the name of fight against global terrorism. Their refusal to share intelligence with the Nigerian military on movements and supplies of arms to Boko Haram terrorist is a clear indication that they want security to deteriorate in the north east, so as to warrant the need for the US to set up military bases in the country. That has been their major aim.
The day the United States set up a Military Base in this country that would be the end of Nigeria. That must never happen! If they say Cameroonian army is better than the Nigerian Army because of our stubbornness to them fine. That's their business. But one thing we must not forget is this: An enemy within is more deadlier than an enemy outside.
(In other news, we hear that Boko Haram have taken over bama. It's not true. Fighting is still on going in the town however the terrorists are no where near overuning it let alone controlling it.)
More grease to the Nigerian Army.

Serious indictment of the government of the day. The same man who came out to tell us his government is littered with boko haram apologists but can't flush them out.

Big indictment of GEJ yet some tribal bigots will come out and shout GEJ till whenever they want. These people rather see people from their region rule even if there is no peace or the man is not able to handle the business of the country than to see someone from another region rule and better the life of the citizenry.
