The Nigerian use of "take"

• "take tea"
• "take alcohol"
• "take cold water"

"To take" tea is an antiquated British short form of "partake". Outside of Nigeria, you will only ever hear it used in such a way among stuffy old British bluebloods. The usage for beverages other than tea, is uniquely Nigerian.

Instead, use:
• "drink tea"
• "drink alcohol"
• "drink cold water"

Ironically, "I don't take X with my Y." is perfectly acceptable universally.

Alcohol makes you drunk, not high. ("Highs" are for stimulant drugs. Alcohol is a depressant, or a "downer".)

MissMeiya: Nairaland spelling and grammatical errors:

Incorrect word: "trend"
As in: "don't derail this trend!"
Correct word: "thread"

Incorrect word: "thread"
As in: "thread carefully"
Correct word: "tread"

Those are the ones I notice most often.
That's the trend on most threads.

Re: 10 Words Nigerians Commonly Misspell by Sobrit(m): 9:56pm On Sep 16, 2014
The topic as used is one of the demonstrations of our unpatriotism. Why would the op say commonly misspelt words by Nigerians. Are Nigerians the only people that misspell those words?. Nigerians are the most unpatriotic set u people i have seen. Google any thing bad online, u will see all sorts of things written by Nigerians about their own country and leaders.
Nigeria is not really as bad as we paint it.

How about using advice (noun) and advise (verb) interchangeably. I have seen countless threads that start off with the sentence "Please advice me".
Re: 10 Words Nigerians Commonly Misspell by millionaireman: 10:07pm On Sep 16, 2014
Author Kperogi made mistakes also. First mistake: Those words are not commonly misspelt by Nigerians. Only a few Nigerians who use those words misspell a few of them. Kperogi must have believed he was lecturing kids in the nursery school. Second mistake: Goodluck is a name chosen by two parents for their child. The way the parents chose to write the COMBINATION OF GOOD & LUCK FOR A NAME MUST NOT CONFORM TO HOW THE ENGLISH USE AND WRITE THE TWO WORDS. A PERSON's name can be anything the parents chose to give their offspring. Let Kperogi study names of many Americans. Some of the names are funny, at times meaningless, however, at times were derived from English words.

Nice write up. Meanwhile, the attention of the "antoni-general" has just been drawn to this. Expect charges to be pressed.
