Nigeria looked beautiful back then and every thing seemed so structured. Many times, I wish the British never left or that they stayed a bit longer like the dutch in south Africa. Yes south asfrivans suffered apartheid but look at them now. If the British stayed a bit longer, we would have ended up like south Africa. Things would be better for us right now. But seems like now, Nigeria of the past is better than the Nigeria of the present 1 Like |

Numismatic: Looking at these pictures, i can only ask "Nigeria what happened to thee"..wonderful architecture and landscapes, wonder what nigeria would have looked like if the colonial masters had stayed a little longer..imagine deporting Ghanaians..now we flog their country in search of greener pasture..Pity.. Ghana is better than Nigeria because they implemented SAP properly. Nigeria on the other hand was playing with SAP....and STILL continuing our serious resource dependent ways.(Dutch disease). If Nigeria is to be a better nation economically speaking...we have to stop relying on oil. Oil reliance is not good for any country. Ten years from now, twenty years from now, you will see: oil will bring us ruin… Oil is the Devil's excrement....Juan Pablo Perez Alfonso, founding father of OPEC,and former Venezuelan petroleum minister. Economists have long known about “Dutch disease,” which happens when a country becomes so dependent on exporting natural resources that its currency soars in value and, as a result, its domestic manufacturing gets crushed as cheap imports flood in and exports become too expensive. What the PISA team is revealing is a related disease: societies that get addicted to their natural resources seem to develop parents and young people who lose some of the instincts, habits and incentives for doing homework and honing skills. |

Yes south asfrivans suffered apartheid but look at them now. If the British stayed a bit longer, we would have ended up like south Africa. Things would be better for us right now. But seems like now, Nigeria of the past is better than the Nigeria of the present South Africa was a British creation, and a British colony. The Afrikanners (descendants of the Dutch...and also French, German and even Malaysian and Black Africans!)..were already independent from the Dutch by the 19th century....and they have been in the country since the 17th century. As for South Africa's development....that was because the whites focused heavily on industrial and technical development.Unfortunately, thanks to racism, they did not extend technical and scientific education to the mass of the Black South African population (that is why most of our African brethren who are natives of South Africa are unemployed) during the Apartheid era. Nigeria's underdevelopment is due to our resource dependency.Because we have oil, we just use the oil money to import and import...and import. The imports stifle our local industries (even our biscuit manufacturers HAVE to compete with foreign imports).Whereas, South Africa does not have oil, it does have diamonds and platinum(but both are very expensive to mine...especially diamonds)..so it was forced to fall back on industrial development. Another thing...South Africa has very limited arable land....so they were forced to use science and technology to develop their agriculture.(Nigeria has too much arable land....so we don't feel the need to develop it...meaning we continue using ancient, labor intensive, farming methods...and just import the difference with our oil money. Of course...South Africa is a net exporter of food, while Nigeria is a net importer). 3 Likes 1 Share |

iamord: Actually we are not inferior....especially as the academic performances of Nigerians abroad shows otherwise(Nigerian children in the UK do better at the A-levels than Caribbean kids for example). The problem is that we are so blessed with resources, that we prefer to take the easy way to ''economic development'' by selling said resources, and sharing the money, which we then use to import and import and award contracts. Countries like China, South Korea and Japan that used to be behind African countries (Fact: China's per capita GDP in 1973 was behind that of Sierra Leone) are countries that have limited natural resources. So, they have to rely on industrial products, which forces them to develop their education systems well into problem solving educaiton systems. As a result , Asians do better on the educaiton scales than Africans and even Europeans and the US!. The reason being that education and industrial development are the only means of survival for these people. Whereas in Africa we really do not ''need'' education as desperately as resource poor Asian and European(and even the US) does....we can just sell our oil/diamonds/copper/tin/etc....and use the money to import the things that we can manufacture. As a result , we have become so resource dependent...and by extension, ''intellectually dull'' because we refuse to use our education as it should be used. And that is why, as a Southerner and an indigene of an oil producing state, I do not support resource control. Not because it is wrong, but because it is not good for our intellectual development....and by extension our self sufficiency as a nation(I would say the same if I were a Hausa Northerner...and against Hausa opposition to resource control). Oil is not good for development...intellectual or industrial and ultimately economic. 2 Likes |
