We all have that friend. The one in the perpetual revolving door of romantic relationships. You can almost perfectly time the stages of their current escapade.

The discovery, which is also known as the “We have so much in common” speech
The “This one is so different than all the others” speech
The “I don’t wanna get ahead of myself, but they could be the one” luncheon,
The first big argument
The “I just found out they also do [fill in the blank]“ phone call
The eventual downward spiral
And the obligatory “Single Again” night on the town

Only to go through it all over again. Maybe you’re that person. Maybe we’re all that person at one point in our lives or another.

If you’re that person, you’ve most likely heard one of your close friends say at some point, “Maybe you should be single for a while.”

Why do people keep suggesting that? What good will that do? You’re not trying to waste any of your precious time alone. You want a relationship, a marriage, kids, a family, a home – and none of that is going to come your way sitting on the couch and watching Netflix every night. So what’s the deal?

This is the deal – You will never thrive in a long-term mutually fulfilling relationship until you know yourself well enough to clearly communicate your needs vs. your wants to your potential life mate and future family members.

In order to do this, you need to know what makes you tick. You need to know exactly what makes you happy and joyous. Know exactly what makes you frustrated vs. angry or enraged. Know what gets under your skin in two seconds flat. You need to know how long of a situation you can honestly endure. So many people aren’t aware of their own temperature gauge. They learn through trial and error – taking innocent bystanders along for the intimate ride of self discovery.

The point is if you are trying to use someone to make your bad life good, you are doing it wrong. You have to be able to feed your own soul before you can be expected to have enough good leftover to feed and nurture someone else’s.

The point is to make a good life even better.
And you haven’t made your life good yet. Which is why you keep searching for your internal peace in someone else. A vicious sure fire method for sabotaging yourself.

Don’t feel bad about it. We all need to become more aware of the continuing behaviors which work against our own best self-interests.

So the next time one of your friends tells you perhaps it’s time to spend some quality time with yourself, maybe they’re not simply full of haterade. Maybe they actually give a damn about you.
