RIO 2016 OLYMPICS: Come with evidence of bribery
by Our Reporter, June 13, 2016 at 12:01

• Amaju dares accusers
• Directs Green to supervise Dream Team VI

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Melvin Pinnick has challenged anybody with evidence to show that they offered bribe to coaches of the country’s 2016 Olympic Games team to come forward with such documents.

Disclosing this to Sportinglife on telephone over the weekend, Pinnick revealed that he has received a deluge of allegations on the matter of players paying large sums of money to coaches through their agents to get a place in the Dream Team VI squad.

But, Pinnick told Sportinglife that he challenged those who sent such allegations to his phones to step forward with the document and see if he wouldn’t sack the coach, if such a person can substantiate his allegations.
According to Pinnick: “I have directed the NFF technical committee chairman, Chris Green to oversee what is happening in the team’s camp. I pleaded with Green to ensure that only those who justified their places on merit are picked to represent the country at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“Most times, such allegations are difficult to prove. But I can assure anyone with incriminating documents to step forward with them. I will invite such a coach to face his accusers. If the allegations turn out to be true, I will ask the coach to resign or I will immeidately sack him.
“We want the best players at the Rio Olympics. My reason is that the Olympic Games squad is the future of Nigeria’s football, especially at this time when most of our younger players are playing in the big leagues in Europe. We should aim at using the boys going to the Olympics for Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers which draws would be made on June 24,” Pinnick said.

If Otigba had not declared for Nigeria, he will be playing in the Euros now.

We wonder why foreign born players are reluctant to declare for Nigeria. The corruption in the system makes selection based on merit difficult.

Many People worse than Otigba have played for the national team and junior teams since he rejected Hungary. We all know them...

The man was excited about the prospect of playing for Nigeria but our system has betrayed him.

Other foreign based players should take note and not publicly declare for Nigeria, unless they get an invitation. They should not destroy other opportunities.

Is it just playing in Euros or having a chance to make impact. Otigba will hardly get an international medal playing for Hungary. He stands a chance playing for Nigeria.

Otigba just has to keep working hard and his chance will come. Same goes for other youngsters. Without declaring, we would not talk about Otigba getting a call up.

It is not about tropies... How many countries get to win trophies? There are only a few countries that win trophies.. Nigeria has missed the last two nations cup.

International appearances especially the euros and the world cup help players professionally. This would have been a great stage for the young man.

Look at our Olympic team, are those our best players at that level? Would you advice an under 23 talent to declare for Nigeria seeing that he risks losing future opportunities?

Otigba turned down an official invitation for Nigeria. He has not even been capped for a friendly. Do you know how many useless players, Nigeria has capped since then?

The best thing for foreign based players is not to go public so as not to affect future opportunities.

I am not against Otigba's call up. I find it unfair that he has not been called. I hope he gets invited and let our coaches try him in camp. Both the Super Eagles and Olympic coaches. He deserves it and it is wrong he has not been called.

What I am against is telling our young foreign born or raised pros not to declare for Nigeria. Pledging their allegiance puts them in a position of people asking why have they not gotten call ups.

Just like Osede also. They did the right thing declaring. Our coaches and the NFF are wrong not handing them their do call ups to try out with the National teams.

Whatever team a player plays in, he needs medals and trophies. Otigba stands a better chance winning a medal or trophy with us than with Hungary. Not qualifying for the AFCON does not mean that we would not pick up a trophy in the near future.

Do you think, Derrick Osede will declare if he had a shot to play for Spain? Osede was met by representatives of Nigeria which is the only other chance, he has at international football.. Ofcourse, he will declare for Nigeria.

Players are professionals and they have to think of their careers. As much as they might have affection for Nigeria or any country, they must think of their careers. Football is a short career.

No player should stick his neck for Nigeria unless they have a guarantee from the coach that they will be called.,.. Otigba rejected a call from the Hungarian National team because he had probably dreamt as a kid to play for Nigeria. Good patriotic choice but not advisable, from a professional stand-point .

Players usually declare after they had been contacted by the national team coach but Otigba rejected a call-up for Nigeria.

As great as trophies are, the international exposure from a championship like the European championship will put you in the radar of big clubs if you can put in quality performances or even earn you better deals.

We are not begging them. We want those who wants to play for Nigeria. That is the key, they want to play for Nigeria. Just like Iwobi and Leon Balogun.

If Derek Osede had no chance and he wants to play for Nigeria, then he is welcomed. If Derek Osede felt he had a chance Spanish National team and he did not want to play for us, Good luck to him.

Hence he wants to play for us, I urge the NFF to give him a chance.

After Iwobi, Balogun got their chances to play for us, it will be an ill advice to tell our Foreign born and raised players not to declare allegiance if they want to play for us.

If they want to play Euros. They can go. If they want to wear the Super Eagles Jersey with pride, they can declare and wait for their chances.

Without declaring, people can not easily fight for them. Just as there is a cry for Otigba's call up. Just as Coach Siasia was questioned about Osede.

RIO OLYMPICS: NIGERIA TRAIN IN US FOR MONTH, ENGLAND CAMP CANCELLED

Nigeria are to train in the USA for a full month ahead of the Rio Olympics in August as it looks very much like a proposed training camp in Manchester, England, has been cancelled, officials have disclosed.

READ: Nigeria vs Honduras rematch

The Nigeria Olympic team are scheduled to set up training camp in Atlanta, USA, from June 29 to July 29.

They will play three test matches during this training camp.

They face Rio-bound Mexico on July 2, before they battle a local side Charleston Battery FC on July 16 and round up their preparations with a final test game on July 27 against Honduras, who will also feature at the Olympics.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had earlier announced the team will prepare for the Olympics in both Atlanta and Manchester.

Nigeria are grouped with Sweden, Japan and Colombia at the summer games.

NIGERIA TO EXCUSE FOREIGN STARS FROM RIO OLYMPICS CAMP

There are very strong instructions that a majority of foreign pros who will feature for Nigeria at the Rio Olympics could well be excused from the month-long Atlanta training camp.

READ: Nigeria U23s plan Honduras rematch

ALSO READ: Nigeria train in USA, England camp off

The training camp in Atlanta is from June 29 to July 29, when most pros will be busy with pre-season at their various European clubs.

AfricanFootball.com has now scooped that the pros will be expected to feature in the team’s friendly against another Rio-bound team Mexico on July 2 after which they will be allowed to return to their various clubs and are then expected back in time for a final test game against Honduras on July 27.

We first broke the story that coach Samson Siasia has already reached an agreement with Arsenal for Alex Iwobi to join up with the Olympic team after his pre-season with the London Gunners.

Players from the Nigeria league formed the bulk of Siasia’s team who won the U23 AFCON in Senegal in December to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

But it is expected now that overseas-based professionals will dominate the final squad to Brazil.

CHELSEA ACE VICTOR MOSES AXED FOR RIO OLYMPICS?

Chelsea forward Victor Moses could be excluded from Nigeria squad to the Rio Olympics as “a corrective measure” after he opted out of the country’s recent friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg last month, AfricanFootball.com has been informed.

Moses is now one of the over-aged players on Samson Siasia’s provisional list for the summer games, but as reported by this website when he pulled out of the friendly games last month, he incurred the wrath of the NFF, who could now be set to exclude him from the final list of players who will travel to Brazil.

READ: Olympic team fly out from Miami for Rio July 29

“It is as I said before, his withdrawal from those games (against Mali and Luxembourg) made us unhappy and it wasn’t the first time he was doing it,” a top official told AfricanFootball.com

“And now his name is on the Olympic Games list, but I’m not sure he will make it because we need to take some corrective measures for these players to understand the importance of playing for Nigeria.”

Head coach of Nigeria’s U23 team Samson Siasia is yet to make any proclamations on this, and it remains to be seen if he will insist on having the Chelsea winger on his team should he be available for Rio Olympics.

This olympics already looks like a disaster... Siasia should have used the Korean tournament to do some blending... Does he want to pluck players that have never played for him at the last minute? Clubs will not release Success, Iheanacho, Ndidi, Iwobi during preseason.

What a shame!!

We Learnt A Lot From Suwon Tournament – Siasia

Head Coach of the Nigeria U-23 team, Samson Siasia has said his team learnt a lot from the 4 -Nation Suwon Invitational Tournament in Korea Republic, after his boys ended the invitational with a 3-1 defeat of Honduras on Monday.

Speaking at the post match press conference, Siasia said the experience in Korea was overwhelming.

"I’m happy we are not going back home pointless. The most important thing is that team officials and the players have learnt a lot from this tournament which we will take back home to start making our corrections.

"The best thing that has happened to this team is that due to results at this tournament, we have heard Nigerians criticizing us, we thank them for all the negative things they have been saying about us. These have served as motivation for us, we have realized the areas that we need to improve on and those players that we need to inject into the team to make up a very strong team going to the Olympics."

Siasia added: “The biggest problem we are having right now is that we do not defend very well; we create several chances but do not convert them. So, we need to make changes in those areas for us to move ahead from here, we have other games coming up too in America. After making those changes we will see how well the team will look going to the Olympics.

"I don't see any plus right now, I only saw players that are not fit enough, that's the biggest problem we had. The change of weather actually affected the few ones that we trusted to play well, most of them faltered, so that's a problem, and we need to address these things in a hurry."

Coach Siasia disclosed that he has a number of players in mind to fortify the team, but he will not disclose their names now, because he has not been able to confirm if they will be available for the Games.

The Nigeria U-23 finished third at the 4 -Nation Tournament after beating Honduras 3-1 in their last game on Monday. Honduras went ahead in the 17th minute through Alberth Elis while the Dream Team came into the game in the second half, scoring the equalizer in the 61st minute through captain Azubuike Okechukwu. Godwin Saviour increased the tally in the 69 minute from the penalty spot and in the 87th minute, Saturday Keigho made it three with a beauty of a goal with a shot taken from the Nigerian half of the pitch.

Thank you my brother. See people confuse these things. If you do not want to declare for Nigeria then go and rot. Alaba is wasting away at the Euros now, I watched the match and apart from a strike that hit the bar he was poor. Agbonlahor where is he now? Ross Barkley nko? He didn't even make it to the Euros. Then there is Ayozie Perez. See the thing about Nigeria is that once you get noticed you will be invited even when you are no longer in blistering form. Otigba is good, but I would say that we have only played two international games with thesame coach who is a local coach. I doubt if he had time to watch him play so he will get his chance

Clubs will not release these players prior to the final preparations stages. Preseasons for some clubs start in July, so they always want their players to come to the preaseason healthy, most times it's these clubs that prevent coaches from inviting these players for the first part of the preparation.

Nigeria did not reject Alaba. He chose to play for Austria when they gave him the chance. He did not come for trials in Nigeria but sent an agent who told him we were not taking a foreign based player to the U17. That is not enough to dump Nigeria for Austria. He chose to play for Austria because he grew up there.

We wish him the best because he loves Nigeria and Nigerians. We would never reject a son who wants to play for us.

Are you saying if we drop a player from the National team as Coach Manu Garba dropped Simon Moses, we are rejecting him.

Alaba was not rejected. He was always welcomed but that level were carrying home based players.

When Coach Keshi chose to drop some foreign based players for he AFCON we won to carry home based players, was he rejecting our Foreign based players?

Exactly. Not selected for the national team doesn't equal rejection. If that is the case, then every player that has ever been dropped could be said to be "rejected".

A player shouldn't automatically be considered for the National team simply because they have dual nationality. It would have been unfair for Alaba to have been selected for the U-17 if the same same policy of not using foreign based professionals is applied to other Nigerians. Doing otherwise would suggest that all a player needs to be selected for the national team is to be eligible to play for some other western country. Playing that card will do the National team no good!

Ade Azeez

Nigerian-born Ade Azeez has signed a two-year deal with Scottish Premier League side Patrick Thistle, the club have announced.

The 22-year-old striker last played for AFC Wimbledon, but failed to get his contract renewed at the club and now becomes Patrick Thistle’s first signing of the summer.

According to a statement on their website, Thistle announced: “With the days ticking down until the pre-season schedule for the 2016/17 campaign gets underway, manager Alan Archibald has been working hard to add more players to his squad for the season ahead.

“This afternoon we are pleased to announce that he has managed to secure the signature of Ade Azeez, or Adebayo Linford Kazim Azeez to give him his full name.

“The 22-year-old attacker, who has signed a two year contract, will officially join the club on July 1st, following the expiry of his contract with AFC Wimbledon. All at Firhill welcome Ade to the club and look forward to watching him in action over the coming seasons.”

Azeez played 77 times for Wimbledon and scored 13 goals and has also represented England at youth and junior levels.

Akpeyi will be Nigeria No.1 goalkeeper in Rio - official

Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi

South Africa-based Daniel Akpeyi will be on Nigeria squad to the Rio Olympics as one of the over-aged players and he will top-choice goalkeeper ahead of Emmanuel Daniel in Brazil.

Akpeyi, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, is a late inclusion to Nigeria’s provisional list as one of several over-aged players and he is now set to be selected as one of the three over-aged players in the squad.

The 29-year-old was initially not in contention for a place in the squad, as Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia had listed only outfield players as possible over-aged for the Games, but appears to have had a change of heart.

“Dan (Akpeyi) was not on the list before but coach (Siasia) realises he needs an experienced goalkeeper in the squad especially after the Korea tournament,” a source within the team informed.

“He (Akpeyi) is not new to coach and that’s why he has been selected and I can tell you that he will make the team except any last minute change like his club refusing to release him, which we don’t think will happen,” the source informed further.

Akpeyi is expected to resume for pre-season on July 6 with his club and while he will not be with the ‘Dream Team’ all through a training camp in US later this month, he is however expected to join them in time for the Games in Brazil.

The goalkeeper has previously worked with Siasia and was a member of the silver-winning FIFA U20 World Cup class of 2005 and was also part of Nigeria’s Olympic squad in 2008 also coached by Siasia.

The latest being the ill-fated 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt, of which Siasia was the Super Eagles coach on an interim capacity and Akpeyi was in goal in the return leg in Alexandria.

I doubt if he had time to watch him play so he will get his chance
and who says Ayozie Perez of Newcastle has a Nigerian root

I heard it not too long ago. Infact it was a commentator during a certain Newcastle game that said it, but I won't bet my head on it
