Oliseh picks U23 stars win or lose in Congo

Nigeria U23 star Oghenekaro (left)
by Samm Audu
Win or lose in Congo on Sunday, several Nigeria U23 stars are already part of the plans of new Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, AfricanFootball.com has yet again scooped.
The U23 stars include Italy-based Stanley Amuzie, FC Taraba skipper Usman Mohammed, Oghenekaro Etebo from Warri Wolves and Enyimba midfielder Kingsley Sokari.
Left-back Amuzie, who only recently moved to Italian Serie A side Sampdoria, posted an eye-catching performance when the U23s beat Congo 2-1 in Port Harcourt earlier this month.
He was solid in defence and showed class going forward to join the attack.
"Even before Amuzie was mentioned to him, Oliseh already has the player on his list," said a top source.
Usman Mohammed, Etebo and Sokari will most certainly be called to a training camp for home-based stars later in August.
And should they then impress, they will be on the squad for a 2017 AFCON qualifier in Tanzania.
“The home-based Eagles camp in August will afford the players from the league to prove they are good enough for the main Super Eagles squad. Those who prove this will be on the flight to Tanzania,” a top team official revealed only to AfricanFootball.com

U23 CAF Championship: SA vs Zimbabwe set for Harry Gwala

Owen da Gama coach of SA U23 team with his players
The return leg of the Olympic Games qualifier between South Africa U-23 and their Zimbabwean counterparts will take place at Harry Gwala Stadium, Pietermaritzburg, on Saturday 1 August and kick-off at 20h15.
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw at Rufaro Stadium earlier this month, although Owen da Gama’s charges felt hard done by the Zambian officials’ handling of the match after awarding the hosts a dubious penalty towards the end of the game with South Africa leading 1-0.
Keagan Dolly had given South Africa a 67th minute lead with a calm finish, but with the visitors heading for victory, Zimbabwe received a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Walter Musona on the 83rd minute to restore parity between the two sides.
Still, da Gama’s side will start as favourites to qualify for the eight-nation tournament in Senegal at the end of the year in which the three African teams that will go to Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be decided.
“We are not going to take anything for granted in the return leg. Yes, we have done half the job but we need to complete the task on Saturday evening,” said da Gama.
As part of their preparations for the Zimbabwe return game, South Africa will play Rwanda in a friendly match at UJ Stadium on Tuesday at 19h00 before leaving for KZN to intensify their preparations.

Siasia: Arsenal’s Iwobi Ripe For Eagles

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Nigeria U-23s coach Samson Siasia has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to speed up action on Arsenal FC of England youngster Alex Iwobi to enable him to be capped for the Super Eagles.
Siasia said for Arsene Wenger to feature the young forward in the Emirate Cup means that Iwobi, who is related to former Nigeria captain Austin Okocha, is good and ripe to get a look-in by the senior national team coaches.
Iwobi who has played for England at Under-16 and Under-19 levels, wants to switch nationality and play for Nigeria, where his father hails from, but there is some paper work to be done before he becomes eligible to play for the 2013 African champions.
“We should cap him now to prevent England from snatching him from us. I wish he was eligible to play for the Under-23s, I would have drafted him to play for my team,” Siasia, whom Iwobi had trained under earlier, told comple tesportsnigeria.com.
“Iwobi has come of age and I think now is the time to cap him for Super Eagles. He is a good player that will be a future great in Nigeria football. NFF should speed up action and get him cleared to feature for Nigeria.”

2015 CAF U23 Championship Qualifiers:
Abiodun Akande out of Congo Clash

Shooting Stars goalkeeper Akande

Shooting Stars goalkeeper Abiodun Akande has been ruled out of Nigeria’s second leg CAF U23 Championship qualifier against Congo.
The goalkeeper just recovered from an ankle injury which saw him miss the first leg which Nigeria won 2-1 in Port Harcourt.
"I won't play the game against Congo this weekend because I just get back to fitness from the ankle injury which made me miss the first leg,” he told AfricanFootball.com
"I talked with the coach and I was asked to stay away and get to full fitness for the All Africa Games camping. That since I am just returning to action, it will be better not to go for the second leg.
“It is painful that I will miss both legs against Congo, God knows best. I am solidly behind my team to beat Congo."
Akande is back training with 3SC and may man the post in the next game away at El Kanemi Warriors on Sunday.

NFF call off chartered flight for Dream Team

Cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have called off a plan for a chartered flight to ferry the country’s team to a crucial CAF U23 Championship qualifier in Congo this weekend.
Nigeria won the first leg in Port Harcourt 2-1 and face a daunting task in the return leg in Pointe Noire on Sunday.
NFF president Amaju Pinnick told AfricanFootball.com the Dream Team VI will now get to Congo on a regular flight.
"We had plans for a chartered flight, but not in the sense of we paying for a plan. For example if we were to spend $60, 000 to airlift the team normally, we were expecting that our friends in the aviation industry would help us by asking us to pay same amount for the entire team," Pinnick explained.
"You know we are in difficult times when it comes to finances. But we are doing everything possible to ensure that the team arrive early enough in Congo for the game.
"We are leaving nothing to chance. Even without the chartered flight we would make sure the team lack nothing and are in the best shape going into the game in Congo."
The overall winners of this match will advance to the CAF U23 Championship in Senegal, which will be the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Alloy: U-23 Eagles To Win In Congo

–Banks On Nigeria’s Record In Congo
By James Agberebi:
Ahead of this weekend’s African U-23 Championship qualifier against Congo, U-23 Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu, has stated that Nigeria’s impressive record in Congo will be to his side’s advantage.
“We know them very well, this is not the first time we will be facing them right at their back yard, we’ve faced them on several occasions and secured wins,” Agu, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, told comple tesportsnigeria.com.
“I remember the Super Eagles went there and got victory against their senior team last year. So, it is not a terrain we don’t know.”
He stated further: “Preparations are going on fine, we are working very hard and looking forward to the game.
“It is not about just home advantage, it’s about 11 against 11 and the team that wants it more, the team with determination and focus. That is what we are going to show in Congo and by the grace of God, we are going to come out victorious.”
In the first leg that was played in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria won 2-1 with Junior Ajayi grabbing both goals, while Moise Nkounkou scored for Congo.

Dele Alli in Spurs squad against MLS All-Stars

Dele Alli in action for Spurs.
Dele Alli has been included on Tottenham Hotspur squad for Wednesday’s clash against MLS All-Stars in Colorado.
Alli, whose father is Nigerian, was signed by Spurs during the January transfer window and loaned back to his League One club MK Dons.
Speculations were rife whether the highly rated midfielder will go another loan spell in the coming season or be part of Spurs first-team plans.
Alli scored his first goal for Spurs against Brentford last week.
The MLS All-Stars will parade top stars like Brazil’s Kaka, Steven Gerrard and David Villa, but Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins was from the team following a groin injury which has now sidelined him for more than four weeks.
Former Chelsea and Manchester City star Frank Lampard has also been replaced on the squad due to injury.

Zimbabwe U-23 coach walks out

Zimbabwe national team Celebrate.
Zimbabwe U-23 coach Callisto Pasuwa has walked out on the team ahead of their crucial CAF U-23 Championships qualifier against South Africa.
The Herald reports that Pasuwa has abandoned the team after losing patience with the Zimbabwe Football Association, who have allegedly failed to pay him for his services – despite receiving more than $1 050 000 financial assistance from FIFA this year alone.
Pasuwa did not attend Zimbabwe’s training session at Greendale Sport Club on Tuesday, where the U-23 players are preparing for the return leg of their final round qualifier against South Africa.
The match is scheduled for the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night. The first leg in Harare earlier this month ended 1-1.
Pasuwa’s assistant Nation Dube and goalkeeper coach Tembo Chuma have taken charge of the team in his absence.
According to the Herald, Dube and Chuma are under strict instructions not to speak to the media, but Pasuwa's manager Gibson Mahachi said the coach decided to stay at home because he "has not received a cent" for his services to the national teams and was "fed up with the false promises that have been made by the association”.
"I think he is fed up. I mean, this guy is a family man besides knowing him as we do as a coach. He has been doing everything in his powers to make sure that the national teams succeed," said Mahachi.
"He has the results to show for it, for that matter. But what does he get in return? Not even a cent. Just promises which are not being fulfilled.”
The CAF U-23 tourney will also serve as qualifiers for next year’s Olympic Games in Brazil.

Similarly players and officials of the U-23 National Team will fly out of Nigeria today for their crucial second leg in pursuit of a 2016 Olympic Games ticket.
Siasia’s wards won 2-1 against Congo’sRed Devilsin Port Harcourt and have no illusions as to the fact that plenty odds will be put in their strides by the hosts in notorious Pointe Noire.

Siasia to Dream Team: Go for the kill against Congo

Head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia has said his wards will be going for an outright win against Congo in Sunday’s 2016 men’s Olympic football qualifier.
Nigeria’s Dream Team VI beat Congo 2-1 in the first leg 2-1 in Port Harcourt on July 19 and will progress to the next round of qualifying if they avoid defeat in Pointe-Noire on August 2.
Despite having a lead to protect at Stade Municipal, Siasia will not be adopting a cautious approach on Sunday.
“We will play with intelligence but the mind-set will not be playing not to lose but playing to win instead. We will be going for an outright win,” Siasia told supersport.com.
Nigeria dominated the first leg but managed a slim win and the Nigeria trainer hopes his charges are more clinical in the return fixture.
“We had so many chances in the first leg while (Congo) had maybe two or three in the entire game. It’s a pity that we did not take our chances. We had chances to score lots of goals. (In the second leg), we would not want to make the same mistakes again.
“We have been working very hard in training this week to improve our goal scoring in front of goal and hopefully, the result will be better this time,” he said.
Siasia has reinforced his squad with Enyimba midfielder, Kingsley Sokari who missed out on the first leg.
The winner of the tie will qualify for the 2015 CAF U-23 championship in Senegal. It will take place between November 28 and December 12 and will comprise eight countries.
The tournament acts as qualification to the 2016 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament for the CAF, with the top three teams qualifying.

Dream Team will survive Congo challenges – Siasia

Dream Team VI head coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed confidence that his boys will emerge from challenges posed by the Congolese U-23 team with flying colours.
The Nigerians will engage the East Africans in a potentially explosive African U-23 championship final qualifying match in their Pointe Noire fortress on Sunday, supersport.com.
A slim 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Port Harcourt means a battle is at hand in the Congo Brazzaville enclave reputed for all manner of antics against visiting teams.
However, Siasia remained hopeful as he announced just before the team’s departure on Thursday that he relishes big games.
“I love big games and I’m not shy to say so and this is with every sense of modesty.
“Pointe Noire is another tough session, but I look forward to it.
“It will not be easy although nothing good in life comes easy, but we will give it our very best shot and return from Pointe Noire with victory,” supersport.com quoted the former Super Eagles manager as saying on NFF website, www.thenff.com.

Chil we are following. We have not and there will be no reason for us to do that because our boys will definitely produce the desired result. The list I expect from our team is a draw come sunday. I expect Siasia and his boys to contain their opponents in the first 20 minutes on Sunday because I see them planning to cause an upset in the game by scoring an early goal just to unsettle us or go back to defend for the rest of the game. I expect our boys to play the game of their lives, but sure victory is ours.

“Le Roy should be afraid of us”

Nigeria men’s U23 coach, Samson Siasia has warned his Congolese counterpart, Claude Le Roy to be afraid and worried ahead of the U23 qualifier this weekend.
Both men have been involved in a war of words since before the first leg in Port Harcourt two weeks ago, with Siasia saying he wasn’t scared of the experienced Congo coach, and the Frenchman accusing Siasia of disrespect in his response.
And ahead of the return leg in Pointe Noire this weekend, Siasia has reignited the media war, by saying Le Roy cannot intimidate him and warned the Frenchman to be worried.
“They can’t intimidate us with all the overseas based players they have, in fact, I think he should be worried.
“They had two chances at goal here (in the first leg) and they managed to score one and he (Le Roy) said they were the better team. I think he should be worried and he should be afraid we are coming to Congo.
“They came over here and beat the Super Eagles so we can go over there and beat them. We know our game plan and I hear they have six overseas-based players but that is not going to scare us.
“We just have to be focused on our game plan and do what we have to do and we will get what we want,” Siasia posited.

‘Siasia allowed Yahaya to return to Spurs’

Babawo Mohammed, the intermediary that handles the affairs of Musa Yahaya, has rubbished reports that said the Tottenham Hotspur trainee dropped himself from the Dream Team VI squad ahead of their trip to Pointe-Noire.
While with the Olympic Team, Yahaya put his career at the White Hart Lane outfit at risk by failing to return to London despite the commencement of pre-season training.
Now, the Jos-based agent has stressed that the attacking midfielder’s departure from the Nigeria U-23s camp had the blessing of coach Samson Siasia.
”Musa Yahaya did not run away from camp, he asked for permission and the coach granted him to leave,” said Babawo Mohammed to news24.
”Siasia authorised him to go to the embassy and submit his visa application to England. I repeat he did not run away.
”He is in England now training with Tottenham Hotspur’s Under 18 and Under 19 teams.”
All things being equal, the Mutunchi Academy product will pen a professional deal with Spurs in the first week of January next year after attaining the age of majority.

Olaitan joins FC Twente on loan

Olympiakos forward Michael Olaitan will spend the 2015-16 season on loan at FC Twente, the two clubs have announced.
The 22-year-old is a product of Mighty Jets and has previously spent time on loan at Ergotelis, where he featured 12 times with a goal to his credit, Goal reports.
“After discussions with my family, I have consciously chosen this club. Dutch football suits me, but also the way FC Twente play,” Goal quoted the former Flying Eagles midfielder as saying on the club’s official website.
Twente’s technical director, Ted van Leeuwen, who is a big fan of the skillful Nigerian, also expressed his delight at Olaitan’s acquisition.
“I followed Michael for four years, because I think he is a great striker,” he told club’s website.
“Very versatile, very disciplined and cool. I find it extraordinary that we have managed to bring this talent to Enschede.
“Although he’s still only 22 years old, he already has the necessary experience and his personality fits very well in our dressing room. His career again just needs a little push,” he concluded.
Olaitan has been handed jersey No. 99.

operation crush Congo Siasia rings 3 changes

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia is set to ring at least three changes to his starting XI in Sunday’s crunch CAF U23 Championship in Congo with Turkey-based forward Umar Aminu expected to now start.
Aminu saw only seven minutes of action in the first leg match in Port Harcourt, but still showed class as Dream Team VI pressed for more goals in a game they won 2-1 in Port Harcourt a fortnight ago.
Enyimba winger Daniel Etor is now likely to give way to the Osmanlispor ace.
Skipper Azubuike Okechukwu could also lose his place in the first team to Kingsley Sokari, who did not feature in the first encounter because he arrived late to training camp on account of a proposed switch to Tunisian club Esperance.
This change in midfield is to allow FC Taraba skipper Usman Mohammed to fully express himself after a subdued performance in the first leg caused by the need for him to always track back to help out Okechukwu in defence.
Supreme FC of Abuja defender Sincere Seth has recovered from a thigh injury and will take his place at rightback after Atanda Sodiq filled in for him in the Port Harcourt match.
Abia Warriors central defender Erhun Obanor could also lose his place to Warri Wolves ace Semiu Laide, who was drafted to the squad after the first leg.
Siasia is also toying with the idea of lining up striker Junior Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi from the first whistle, but it is left to be seen if he will eventually settle for this arrangement.
A training ground injury caused Awoniyi not to start the first match.
However, Portugal-based Shehu Abdullahi will not feature for Nigeria in Sunday’s CAF U23 Championship qualifier in Congo because he was not granted an entry visa, AfricanFootball.com has specially gathered.
“Shehu was originally on the squad for Congo, but it was later discovered that he was not given a visa to Congo and so he could not travel with the squad again,” a top source informed AfricanFootball.com.
“He has since left Abuja for Sokoto to visit his family.”
Shehu’s availability was initially in doubt because of a thigh injury he suffered in a pre-season game in Portugal last week, but his club later cleared him for the Congo match.
The former Kano Pillars star arrived Nigeria on Tuesday and was to have played as cover at right fullback.
On Wednesday, he also featured in a test game against Amakson Academy, which the Dream Team VI won 3-0.

Saviour shuns Anderlecht, Club Brugge for KV Oostende

Flying Eagles and U23 star Godwin Saviour has opted for Belgian top-flight club KV Oostende ahead of Anderlecht and Club Brugge.
Saviour’s transfer is now pending a routine medical early next month.
The Belgian club announced Friday the highly-rated forward from FC Sports of Jos has agreed a three-year contract with a year’s option beginning with an initial year-long loan deal.
The player’s agent further confirmed to AfricanFootball.com they are getting set to fly out to Belgium for a medical soon.
Oostende already have another Nigeria striker, Joseph Akpala, on their books.
Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Genk as well as Gent were among the clubs who tabled offers for the exciting youngster.
Saviour was considered ahead of Gent star Moses Simon at the recent FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand, where he scored twice and provided an assist.
He has also been capped by Nigeria at U17 level and he is currently with the country’s U23 team for a CAF Championship qualifier in Congo.
Last season, Oostende finished 10th in the 16-team Jupiler League.
They got off to a flying start in the new season when they won 3-1 at KV Mechelen and welcome Westerlo in their second game of the campaign today.

Dream Team lands in Pointe-Noire

The U-23 National Team, Dream Team, Friday afternoon landed in the economic capital of Congo, Pointe-Noire.
The Nigerian delegation led by the Chairman of NFF Technical and Development Committee, Felix Anyansi-Agwu landed at the Augustino Nero International Airport, Pointe-Noire at about 12.25pm local time (same time with Nigeria) on board an Ethiopian Airline flight.
On arrival, the Nigerian delegation were received by the Consul-General of the Embassy of Nigeria, Brazzaville, Mr. Adamu Shuaibu Hamza, accompanied by Mr. Adebayo Iyaomiye and the president of the Nigeria community in Pointe-Noire, Mr Ezenwabasili Egbuna.
With the assistance of the Embassy officials took the team to Hotel De Fez where they are accommodated .
The Nigerian community in Congo were seen wearing T-shirts they have produced specially for the ‘battle’
Nigeria is currently on the edge of securing a place for the continental event after failing to utilise home advantage two weeks ago, when they could only narrowly beat Congo 2-1 in Port Harcourt.
Meanwhile, Junior Ajayi is hoping for a repeat of his heroics on Sunday in their quest to reach the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The Dream team won the first leg 2-1 in Port Harcourt on July 19 but Ajayi who scored both goals on the day says it was not a good result.
“It was not a good result because an away goal counts for two. However, we managed to win so there is something to defend in the second leg,” the attacker told supersport.com.
On his brace, the forward said he felt relieved as the pressure kept building after a stoic first half performance by the visitors.
“I felt relieved after scoring because the first half ended goalless and the pressure was building.
“Every striker wants to score goals so I was very happy to have scored two in the first leg,” he said.
He rounded off by voicing his sentiments on the second leg which comes up on Sunday at the Stade Monumental, Pointe-Noire.
“I know we will crush Congo in the second leg because they will play differently (as opposed to how they played in the first leg). In the first leg, they concentrated on defending and stopping us from playing.
“They have to score so they will come out and attack against us. That will give us the space to attack them and play our normal game. They have an experienced coach-one of the best on the continent (Claude Leroy) but I am sure we will crush Congo,” he said.

2015 CAF U23 Championship Qualifiers Egypt U23
Egypt to cruise past Uganda in Kampala

Egypt U-23 attacking midfielder Mahmoud Kahraba
Egypt will be expected to make light work of Uganda in the return leg of their 2015 CAF U-23 Championship final qualifying tie in Kampala on Saturday.
The Junior Pharaohs crushed their counterparts 4-0 in Alexandria a fortnight ago thanks to a brace from Mahmoud Kahraba and a goal apiece from Mohamed Salem and Ramadan Sobhy.
A win might not be out of the Uganda Kobs reach, but it is highly unlikely that they will put five past the well disciplined North Africans, who are one game away from booking their sport in the CAF Under-23 tournament in Senegal.
The top three teams at the competition will subsequently book their place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
Egypt reached the quarter-finals in London three years ago. Having ended second in their group to eventual runners-up Brazil, the African giants would go on to suffer a 3-0 defeat to Japan in the last eight.
Uganda Kobs and El Merreikh goalkeeper Salim Jamal joined up with his teammates late on Friday, as both teams finalized their preparations for this weekend's clash.
Jamal will be hoping for a better showing on home soil having let in four goals two weeks ago.
The game will kick-off at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in the Ugandan capital at 15h00 CAT.
